Quality soup made in house! Ended up having lunch here on a chilly cloudy afternoon in downtown Spokane and was positively surprised.
Ordered the soup sampler  which consists of three bowls of soup and a thick slice of their Beer bread for $8. Oh it was worth it!
All soups were satisfying, fresh, and delicious. The broccoli cheddar was perfect and the succotash was surprisingly hearty with finely chopped vegetables in broth. Beer cheese soup was spicy and creamy showcasing a mix of flavors I haven't tried before.
Try the Moose Drool beer! You will not be disappointed! Friendly staff, too!
Fantastic soup. Very pleasantly surprised. Here from Phoenix for a few days and dropped in to check it out for dinner and a drink. Veronica was super awesome at helping me pick a delicious soup and beer pairing! Will definitely come back for another bowl before I leave town. I highly suggest doing a slice of the home made beer bread to go with your soup.
Review Source:Just happened upon Soulful Soups by accident. Â I was in town with family for a wedding and as we were running errands we found this cute, well decorated, and immaculate little place and decided to give it a try. Â I had the Chicken Artichoke soup w/a turkey sandwich, my uncle had the Beef Burgundy soup and the same sandwich, and my aunt had the chipotle sweet potato soup and a salad. Â We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Â The woman that served us was very friendly and helpful offering us samples of the soups before we ordered. Â I wish we had a place locally like this. Â I recommend if you are in the area and would definitely visit again!
Review Source:You won't forget the beer cheese soup (a juxtaposition of flavors that I did not know existed. Ignorance is NOT BLISS). I could have been eating this stuff for years. If only I knew...
This is one thick, gooey, and rich soup. Every bite is like an explosion of cheddar, cream, and a tangy finish. It is literally food bliss.
The beer bread is just the right combo of moist and hearty.
Dipping the bread in the beer cheese soup (whoever thought of putting these two things together should be sainted!) was like taking a swim in paradise.
These are not exaggerations.
Oh beer cheese soup how I will forever long for thee...
Most amazing Monday we have had in a long time!! Half price drinks...OKAY! A mix of music from 90's to now...OKAY! And a very busy yet friendly bartender! Small space, but once your in there you don't notice at all!! The décor is modern and welcoming...and by 10pm this place was packed! Great selection of liquor also!!! Dying to try the food next time!!!
Review Source:Best soup in downtown Spokane. Â Hands down. Â The selection can be a bit limited in the summertime, but they make up for it in the fall/winter when they offer 6-8 soups each day. Â The soups aren't just your standard fare either - Moroccan lentil, spicy mac and cheese, chicken artichoke, and so many more! Â You could have different soup every day for a couple of weeks at least. Â And the staff encourages you to try samples in order to find one you like.
And then there's the beer bread. Â Warm and sweet, it makes up for any regrets you might have had about going out on a limb and trying a new soup outside your comfort zone. Â It's always hot and fresh. Try and and you'll be hooked.
The cost of a small soup and beer bread slice is around $8, which seems a bit high to me (even for the best soup in Spokane). Â But once you try the beer bread, you won't really care that the price is too high. Â you'll pay it and go back for more.
Price is a bit high for soup (6.75 for a large)
It isn't that large.
Students get a free beer bread though, which is pretty good (esp since I don't like beer that much)
I love their walnut cranberry salad. It comes with this sweet raspberry (I think) dressing, and lots and lots of feta. Today it did not come with that much lettuce though, kinda sad about that because I had a lot of feta and cranberry to eat!
The soup we ordered was the garlic potato soup. It was very thick and creamy, but their 4 other choices were tomato based. I think they should have more selection for those of us who don't like beans/tomatoes. Their choices were tomato soup, chili, taco soup (which is  basically like a chili), and a chicken rice soup (tomato based). Therefore I was left with the garlic potato (love garlic so not a big deal.)
Price ~ $15 but they do have combo specials.
It's a good time when you show up after your social dance with nowhere to continue the dance itch and stop in what I had always assumed was another downtown bar.
We walked in and I really enjoyed the attractive bartender guy waiting to verify or legal drinking status near the front tables. You don't get many attractive male service so I was tickled pink. We choose a table towards the bar and server took a while to tend to us but once he did, he was great.
Drinks were good, yes but let me tell you about the place. It's moonlight-y and not in the sleazy neon sign way but the cozy second date night way where you want to be more intimate way.
I kept hearing about/seeing their beer bread and it looked really good.
Go here for your next date and enjoy a different atmosphere than the other downtown Spokane bars. For a place with Soulful in its title, this is a nice surprise for any age of a patron.
I've only been into SS&S a few times for lunch over the last year or so, but now that I work in downtown Spokane I know I will be frequenting the place quite a bit more.
5 stars in my book can be attributed to:
-Great tasting (and good variety) soups everyday.
-Always vegetarian and vegan choices. Just as importantly- easily color coded and labeled accordingly.
-Beer Bread. Enough said.
-Friendly disposition (even better that they're proud Griz fans in the center of Coug/Zag/Eagle country!)
-Eclectic music choice.
-A real lunch for under $10 bucks.
Looking forward to the next time!
I have to say, this place in itself redeems Spokane in my books. They have a wonderful selection of beer and whiskey, as well as some delicious soups. Plus, when I ordered a thai-style coconut soup and mentioned that my preference is "the spicier, the better" the stunningly gorgeous bartender (yes, all these reviews here are spot on) went the extra mile and brought over a nice array of hot sauces to add to my soup in case I wanted to add a bit of zing. Well, a few shades of red darker and I was in spicy soup heaven.
I am certainly going to make an effort to return here while I am in town, and this will be on my regular list of spots when I happen to return.
Gluten Free Options: Yes, though it'll pretty much just be the soup - but the soup is tasty!
Bathroom: Non-gendered single occupancy.
This place came up as being independent, having gluten free options and a full bar -- all of which grant major points in my book. Â While the menu options were a little more limited than I thought they would be -- literally three soups served with bread -- the soup was very tasty and filling even without the bread. Â The bartender is very personable, and she was very helpful in furthering my education in all things bourbon. Â Until whatever passed for a DJ came in and started blaring tinny tunes with awkward breaks, the music was good - and that is the only reason I've scored this place at four stars instead of five. Â
The decor is beautiful, and high ceilings add a sense of space to this versatile little bar and soup eatery. Â Food presentation is lovely, and if I lived in Spokane, this would be a regular haunt of mine. As it is, I want to fold it up in my pocket and take it back home with me.
If we're going strictly on Soup, I'd give this place a solid 5 stars. But, we're not. Sorry to say, but I think the revamped Soulful Soups is just not working. It used to be super airy and light and bright in there. Now, it's like a cave. Not my idea of a great lunch spot. Now, my going out days are behind me, so I can't speak to the atmosphere at night when I believe the Spirits becomes more relevant, but still. I'm torn. I love the food, but the atmosphere is killing me!
Review Source:I found myself in the "beautiful" city of Spokane. Let's just say it was a nice get away from L.A......So I stumbled into Soulful Soups.
Right off the bat I met Rachel who was tending the bar. It was "ladies" night (thursday) and luckily I was with my lady which meant I drank for half price.
The atmosphere is very chill. You can actually have a conversation with the person next to you. The lighting is dim and intimate.
Didn't have the soup, but the drinks were poured well and Rachel was very friendly and talkative. Made us feel like regulars and since we're so used to the L.A. snobbyness, she was a breath of fresh air.
I recommend this place for a quiet evening out and if I ever find myself in Spokane again, I'll have to stop by again.....
I have deleted my previous review of Soulful. This is one example of where the owners actually care, which I have found is extremely rare in this town. Â Unlike Catacombs, when they got negative feedback they put it to good use. Â Thanks guys!
That said, I think the new Soulful is much better than the old. Â Although I have never been there for late-night (I hate going out) it is one block away from my office, so I love it for lunch. Â The beer bread is still awesome and I love the new color-coding system, as well as a greater variety. Â Not to mention the Love Cupcakes! Â Locally made & amazing, the addition of the cupcakes is the cherry on the Soulful sundae.
I love this place! If you call in the morning, they can tell you which options are gluten free! They are open until 2pm or until they sell out so go early. Great soup, cute place. Just heard they changed owners, so i'm not sure if this is alll still correct. I hope they still have gluten free choices. that place was yummy.
Review Source:I had been meaning to stop in and try this place for a while but because they are only open for limited hours it was difficult to get there. Â However, finally made it there and was not disappointed. Â I had a chili type soup (cant remember the actual name) that was delicious and the combo came with salad and bread. Â The salad wasn't your plain green salad..they added candied walnuts and dried cranberries with a raspberry vinaigrette and also offered a different salad too in case you wanted to switch it up. Â The bread was very delicious. Â Way too much food for one sitting but nicely priced if you are looking for a large meal. Â I would recommend it and will be going back again to try something else.
Review Source:Save your money, go to Safeway and buy some Safeway Select Tomato Bisque.
The people are nice but I've been there on three separate occasions and always left wishing I would've gone to Safeway instead. The seating is so close to the front door that just when you start to warm up with the soup someone comes in and the cold blast hits. I won't be back, even if they offer the same fuel discount as Safeway.
Great place for lunch! They usually offer 3 all natural and home made soup selections each day with various topping options. You can make a meal out of your soup by adding a salad and bread. Their home made beer bread is amazing! Although you order from the counter it is not unusual for a friendly staff member to check up on you during your meal. Their business hours are limited to lunch and they are located in the middle of downtown Spokane.
