We were here on an Alaska cruise in May.  Sourdough was the friendliest bar we visited.  Good place to spend a drippy day.

Old school lounge full of blue collar locals.  Beer price was high, but they had an AC/DC pinball machine that kept us their longer than otherwise.

I wish I could stand cigarette smoke. I really do. If it didn't make me gasp and wheeze and reach for an inhaler, this would be a great bar. It is a great bar. If you smoke. It's got an awesome ambiance, really a local place, except for when there is a tour ship in town. Luckily, I know locals, and they took me here. Gotta love em. If you are visiting friends in KTN, or heck, if you get off a boat, visit. Drinks are good, not as expensive as some other places, and the ambiance is local. Good enough.

    Cruises to Alaska = Fun.
    Drinks on cruises = Expensive.
Port Cities in AK = cheaper drinks and funner atmosphere.

Yeah, those are pretty much your answers for Alaskan cruises.  Drinks on board can be a little pricey so when we docked in Ketchikan I (sort of) kiddingly said we should go to a bar.  10:00 a.m. may not be the prime time for a drink, but my friend enthusiastically agreed.  It was cold, rainy and we needed a distraction.  After asking a local they recommended Sourdough.  He explained there were pictures covering the walls of damaged ships.  Sort of a wall of shame, and he said we should see him and his boat.  So of course, we had to.

The bar is pretty no-frills but the locals and the bartenders were awesome.  Cheap, strong pours of the good stuff and not so good stuff.  We ordered two Long Islands and our bartender accidentally made too big of a pour and decided to go ahead and just make us 3.  Score.

With drinks in hand we migrated to the pool tables and for a whopping 50 cents you can play a game (or 4).  They also had an electronic console where you were a Polar Bear but instead of hitting pins you hit Penguins.  I thought it was funny.

Bar service was quick and friendly and after a few drinks we decided to brave the weather and head back to the ship.  Fun times were had by all.  Thanks Sourdough!

Ketichikan, a charming fishing town known for its salmon and natural beauty, is a pretty remarkable place altogether, and there's a lot to see and do; take a drive through the Tongass Rainforest and go kayaking, for one. But when a totally awesome local suggests you stop at his favorite bar and have an AK amber beer, you've just got to do that as well.

The Sourdough is a tiny, dimly lit bar tucked into a corner of storefronts surrounding the pier. The atmosphere is pretty no-frills and low-key, and I could easily see coming here on a regular basis if I lived in the area. It's a bit like a VFW hall--or, to use a Boston reference, the JJ Foley's in Forest Hills, but with a humorous maritime twist. The walls are littered with photographs of ships that have drydocked over the years, as well as one hilarious picture of two, smiling Alaskans with their arms crossed, standing beneath a banner that reads, "Greenpeace: Kiss My Ax." As one can imagine, the clash of the logging industry and environmentalists can get pretty serious.

If you're in Ketchikan, there's a wealth of amazing outdoor sporting activity to engage in, and breathtaking natural beauty to behold, but don't forget to stop at a Sourdough, get out of the rain for a minute, and kick back a few.
