I get the reason the pizza snobs don't like pizza around Austin. Look, this isn't Chicago or Italy, it's Texas. Other than Gino's Italian Restaurant in Round Rock, this is by far the best pizza in the area. I tried another place just down the road that another reviewer mentioned and it was just ok. Southern's Pizza is good, it's not Giordano's, but if you can find pizza like that anywhere in Austin, please share!
The atmosphere is great and the owners treat their customers like friends. This is my family's new favorite place for take out and soon to be a weekly eat out location.
Yeah for Pepsi (I am a pepsiaholic). The pizza was tasty enough. Â I did enjoy the crust. Â What kills it for me; CANNED mushrooms. Â This was a the deal breaker for me. Â I might go back, but I will certainly inquire about he freshness of the veggies and not assume the are not out of a can.
Review Source:We love this place! We go every Thursday night and the owners are fantastic. They know our order by heart. We bring the kids and enjoy the family, sports atmosphere.
I have read the previous reviews and have recommended the place to some people. What I have learned is: If you like greasy, soggy, "New York style", clog your arteries style pizza, then this place isn't for you.
I am an avid runner and we splurge here once a week. However, there is no grease on the pan and we order fresh ingredients on our pizza.
The beer is cold and you can get sandwiches, salads, and wings as well. Not to mention, the biggest wine pour ever!
The only pizza I eat are the ones I make at home or here at Southern's.
This is the kind of place people look for in a home town. It is comfortable, pleasant, and the food is good.
It's where everybody knows your name :) Southern's is our Cheers!
I read some of the reviews and I'm thinking "...did I eat at the same place?" Â We were in the mood for pizza and unfortunately Pizzaria Rialto is closed on Mondays/Tuesdays so we went to Southern's Pizza.
I will say that the staff there are really nice which is what got them the 2 stars but seriously, it was one of the most tasteless pizza's I've ever eaten. Â The only thing on it that had any flavor were the onions - the tomato sauce, the cheese, the meats, nothing...
We brought home the remaining part of it and tossed it out this morning as we'd both had some major gastric distress (trying to be gentle in the morning dear readers) afterwards which we're guessing was probably from the dough.
If you want great pizza just continue down 183 to Rialto but, if you're looking for a fun sports bar to relax, socialize this is your place.
Service is kinda meh here but OMWow, the pizza is amazing. I don't know what they put in those cheesesticks but it's seriously akin to crack it's so addictive! It's pretty small inside so if you have a large group you should definitely call ahead but it's SOOOO worth it! They also have a patio, I haven't tested it out since it's been 187 degrees everyday this summer but it looks pretty nice. Oh, and parking can be a challenge, if you have multiple parties I recommend car pooling!
Review Source:Hello! Pizza Snob here. If you've read my other reviews, you know what to expect. I'm very critical of pizza joints because pizza making is my passion. I make my own and mine is great. Ask anyone who's had it. I like good pizza. I LOVE GREAT pizza.
So, I see this place is rated 4.5 stars. REALLY? FOUR and a HALF??? Wow! This place is going kick some serious pizza boo-tay, right?. At that high of a rating, it'll just "knock it out of the park" (pardon the sports pun - the place is a sports bar, get it?), right? Man! So I suggested it to Brandon from http://Pizzahunt.net when he came over to work on making his Little Black Egg pizza oven. Again... 4.5 stars??? Unbelievable! Turns out... it IS unbelievable. Completely. It's NOT 4.5 stars...
Honestly, I am firmly convinced that people in the Austin area have no idea what "good pizza" is. Reading reviews on places like this convinced me of that over the years. People in this area think Austin's Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa Murphy's, or Gatti's is "good pizza". I'm sorry, folks... the stuff is junk. Very low quality ingredients, from the bland, highly processed crust, to the cheap, acidic, tomatoes, to the very poor quality processed cheese. They use the cheapest stuff they can to make a buck. It's commodity, not quality. If you've read my reviews before, you know how I feel about people who turn what should be good food into a commodity. Quality goes out the window.
This place falls in line with that category. It's just... Not. Good. At. All. They are no better than any of the local/national garbage chains throwing out high numbers of crappy pies just to make a buck.
We watched them make the pie. I wish we hadn't. I witnessed them taking a really flat skin of dough off of a stack of other really flat skins from a plastic bag. I got nervous... that's NOT a good sign. Seriously? I asked the old guy running the place a question about how much did it cost them per skin to buy them. He immediately said they "made" those skins from scratch "in the back". Really? Never heard of that before. I'm not sure if I actually believe that or not. Usually, they're pre-made by someone in a factory... yuck.
They proceeded to "sauce" and "cheese" the pie, and shove it in the nice classic deck oven... which seemed to be a lot of overkill for the amount of "passion" they seemed to have in their pies (which was not a whole lot).
The crust is flavorless - except for the large BURNT nuggets of cornmeal on the bottom of the crust - and stiff as a board on the base, for about an 1/8th of an inch. Then it instantly turns gummy - but still bland - for the next 3/4 inch. Here's a tip for the owners... use Semolina to dust your (really warped and curved) wooden peel. The Semolina will burn, but most of it will stick to the stone in the deck oven, and NOT to the bottom of the crust and get lodged in people's teeth).
The sauce is acidic, runny, and peppery (not in a good way). The cheese is completely devoid of any amount of flavor. We got a pepperoni pie, and the pepperoni is about the only thing tolerable on the pie. Â
This place is to be avoided if you actually know what a good pizza is supposed to taste like... you know, if you're looking for the kind of place with quality ingredients and lots of love and artistic expression baked into the pie. This place is not that place.
I won't bore you with more details... bottom line is the bottom line...
Two stars is generous... only because I enjoyed our conversation with the old guy who runs the place.
Go down the road a little bit to Pizzeria Rialto.
Pizza is pretty good - the personal pizza filled me up and it has a great taste of homemade pizza. Staff is very friendly and outgoing.
The place is neat and organized and has playing of space to accommodate small groups. They have 3 TVs and they are all on different sports channels of course.....LOL
This place is much better than your chain places - these place family owned and operated.
I will return most definitely.
Wow! Sooo delicious! They've got some cool decor with a few Dukes of Hazard signed photos on the wall. We got the chicken garlic special with black olives instead of artichoke hearts and it was amazing.
The crust: oh the crust! Takes 3 days to make it I guess and maybe that's what gives it such an original texture- crispy on the bottom but soft on top.
The people were nice, ranch dressing homemade & a handfull of beers are available on tap.
Will deffinately return for sure!
My friend knows how much I miss Round Table Pizza. Â There aren't as many gourmet options as RTP has, and I haven't tried the one I saw on the menu (garlic chicken) but the all meat pizza was excellent. The crisp but not cracker-thin crust satisfied both of us. I don't usually like crisp crusts because they are way too thin, but as another reviewer mentioned, this is a delicious crust with a crisp crunch to it. Prices are good, we enjoy watching football games there and it is comfortable, fun, and has clean ladies restroom.
Review Source:This place is awesome!! Â My husband and I went here this past Saturday to watch the UT football game. Â There are plenty of HDTVs with every game on. Â We ordered a sausage pizza which was so good! Â The crust was especially good. Â We also got a pitcher of Dos XX to go with. Â We are happy to see they have it on draft because Chili's took out their draft Dos XXs. Â The beer was ice cold and cheap! Â The environment is great for anyone.
Review Source:This pizza is pretty good but could easilly be improved. The crust is really nice. It's crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside while remaining thin. It's also a little sour... all in all delicious.
Sauce is nice, perhaps could use more, but no biggie.
Cheese is a little weak. Not sure if it's simply that there should be more or if it's the mix.
All in all, a very good pizza...
Garlic bread was awesome. But you get that much butter, it should be.
Dropped in for lunch today after reading about this place in the local paper. Â I was intrigued by the crust that claims to be crunchy but not thin. Â Upon arrival I was surprised to find it was a sports bar with Satellite HDTV's and not your typical walk-in/out pizza place. Â So I looked at the menu, and decided on the specialty pizza, "Roasted garlic chicken w/ Alfredo white sauce:" Â It also has onions, artichokes, mushrooms, and diced tomatoes. Â
On first bite I thought, "Hmm...where have I tasted this kind of pizza before?" Â The toppings were definitely familiar, but the crust was unique. Â I was expecting the semi thick crust to have just a tiny crunch, but surprised it has a really thin crust crunch. Â Does that make sense? Â Overall, an excellent pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised that the garlic did stand out amongst all the other toppings.
I will definitely be back to try my own custom combination pizza.
Also, good to note this place is up in Leander on 183 in a tiny strip mall south of and across the street from Lowes. Â If you live north of McNeil you should not pass this place up. Â If you live south of McNeil, I suggest making a weekend trip to try it out first and then you decide. Â For sure worth it if you love pizza.
We went here the other afternoon for some pizza. Â This place serves California style pizza. Â We ordered our pie and sat down. We didn't have to wait too long. Â The crust was thin and crisp. Not too thin. It was good.
The place has sports theme. Yet it is suitable to bring the family for a nice causal meal.
I can see this fast becoming a great hang-out.
