Southfork is a great place to eat whether with just one person or group setting. The menu is very basic like burgers and such but whatever they make is delicious! They do have a full bar which is very nice and convenient (not for my pocket and wallet) but aside from those positives, the negative would be the cramped feeling. I think they could space the area out a bit more and the place does seem slightly understaffed at times. Food is great though and I always come back for those thin fries!
If you are looking for something somewhat nice for a dinner date that would work for a decent price, this is it. Definitely a drive away since it is past Walmart but this place is highly suggested and one of the normal packed spots on any of the Parents Weekends.
For such a strange location (stuck in between a hardware store and a dollar store in a strip mall), this place consistently has great food for the Pullman-Moscow area. A lot of the menu is pretty standard gastropub fare: local beer, wings, burgers, etc, but there are some surprises. The Bangkok burger is pretty tasty; the spicy/sweet chutney is really addictive. The Mac n' Cheese made with local Cougar Gold cheese is another popular one that people tend to rave about.
But today I came in and tried two of the new specials: poutine and lamb sliders. It's surprisingly hard to find poutine anywhere around here, and South Fork makes it with Cougar Gold cheese curds and mushroom gravy. The lamb sliders (4) come topped with caramelized onions, tzatziki, and that same spicy/sweet chutney I mentioned earlier. Both were really, really good and hopefully will stay on the menu for a long time.
Also worth mentioning: this place is quite cheap. You could easily drop as much money on similarly portioned meals at any of the various Americanized Chinese or Mexican places scattered around town, but why? Poutine, guys.
4 Stars for Pullman, but a 3 Star Overall
Nice feel and vibe, esp for a strip mall location.
The good:
Service: Â Fast and friendly
Beer Selection: Â Good range of options, mix of well known and lesser known with focus on Washington beers
The Bangkok Burger: Â well cooked and give them credit for an inventive spin on a burger. Â The tomato chutney and curry mayo were a nice compliment to the burger.
The not so good:
The fries: there were a ton of them, thin-cut and well cooked, but way, WAY over-salted. Â Could only eat about a third of them before the salt and seasoning were just overwhelming. I'll give them a break and assume it was a 1-time, over zealous food-prepper issue. Â
Will definitely go back.
I absolutely love Southfork. Their food is fantastic, my favorite being their scotch eggs appetizer. The hardboiled eggs are perfectly cooked, moist and not rubbery, surrounded by juicy sausage and an outside layer of crispy, flavorful breading. It's paired with a tasty honey mustard sauce that adds just the right amount of sweet. Their ribs are also great, so tender you can pull them apart with your fork, though a little dry for my taste. Their cobbler with rotating fillings are always a great way to end a meal.
The service is also fantastic. Last time we went, one appetizer took about 20 minutes to get out, so they provided it, and a soup to tide us over in the meantime, for free. All the waitresses we've had were attentive and very polite.
YUMM-O in my TUMM-O. Ew. Why did I refer to my stomach as my TUMM-O? For the record, no one else is allowed to do that. Ever.
But back to good ol' South Fork. YUMM-O. It's consistently good. Order their fish tacos and ditch your fears of keeping your womanly figure and order the dang fries! Oh. The fries! I'm a big fan of thin, crispy seasoned-fries and these fit the bill. So good.
I also really like their veggie bean burger. It's just good and that's the end of my explanation.
This is my favorite restaurant in Pullman. It can get crowded on the weekends and on special days (Homecoming, Moms' Weekend, etc.) but on a regular day the pace is good - you won't be the only ones in there but you won't wait 30 minutes for a table either.
It's a laid-back place with very friendly and attentive staff. We were there tonight and had two separate waiters ask to refill our drinks for us! Service at the end of the meal (getting the check and paying) is the smoothest of any place I've been.
The food is really good for Pullman. It's good, solid casual dining food. You can get any of the burgers made with beef, a chicken patty, or a veggie patty, and a lot of the other entrees are suitable for or can be made suitable for vegetarians easily. A word of warning - the lentil chili is *not* vegetarian. I think they have recently begun mentioning this on the menu, but we were in for a surprise the first time we had it!
The only complaint I have is that there's so much food ordered that it doesn't make sense to get an appetizer and a main meal, unless you plan on taking some home with you, which I often do. You can also call ahead and make an order to be picked up.
Love this place. Started coming as I was moving into town visiting about once a month. The hosts greeting you at the door are great. Old school lunch boxes filled with toys for my kids...very cool. Excellent selection of beers, each of eight meals I've tried so far are excellent. Now that I live here, I still  find myself here three times a week. Favorites off the appetizers are the dragon tails and wings. Other favorites are the buffalo chicken salad and chicken gyro.
Review Source:I think its funny how some people complain about the prices. This place is VERY reasonably priced compared to bigger cities (I lived in Seattle for the last 3 years). The Prime Rib Dip is heavenly. I've had everything on the menu (go figure, not many options living in Pullman now) and have only been disappointed once with this bland pesto pasta dish. The fries are bomb too, and so is the tartar sauce. Again, decent price, good service, and great food.
Review Source:One of my favorite restaurants in pullman bc of the ambiance, and it's a little classier than most, although it's very casual. This time we went with the pulled pork sandwich and their special for the day, the seared tuna tostada. The pulled pork was very juicy, very delicious, and came with a side of salad. I didn't enjoy the seared tuna tostada as much, it was slices of tuna on pieces of chips, topped with a horseraddish-like mayo/sauce. Not a huge fan. Should have stuck with the tried and true roast beef dipped sandwich!
Review Source:Service, atmosphere, taste - all great! Â I had the fish and chips and a couple of beers & was SO satisfied. Â It definitely did not taste like your typical flash frozen, out-of-a-bag pub fare - it was perfectly cooked & tasted fresh. Â The server/bartender was awesome & the prices were reasonable! Â Definitely plan to be a repeat customer.
Review Source:Excellent Food! Lots of seating-great atmosphere and drinks!
I ordered the Lettuce cups and a cup of the tomato/basil soup-which was perfect for a meal. Breadsticks are $1.50 EACH.. yes each.. none are served with the soup.
Soup is very tasty. Lettuce cups were tasty and instead of just regular lettuce leaves were served with butter lettuce-
Made a second visit and ordered the pulled pork sandwich-served w.coleslaw and a side salad. Salad had real black olives in it, big pieces of tomato and the honey mustard dressing was good and thick.
Service was very friendly and accomodating-when we mentioned that we were unaware of the $1.50 per breadstick charge they removed it from the bill which was GOOD CUSTOMER service. If in the area.. STOP-easy to find-part of a strip shopping center-near a Rite Aid and A dollar Store.
Food is served quick -so if you are in a hurry or on a short lunch-stop here!!
Homemade desserts-had the rhubarb-strawberry cobbler-excellent w. ice cream!
Came here for lunch with a group of 13 people. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Food was quick for so many people but the restaurant wasn't terribly busy either.
The food was great! My husband and I both ordered the fish & chips and I couldn't finish it there was so much food. Will definitely go back!
This place is overpriced for some okay food. I came here with a family and wanted to order something that wasn't expensive. I am glad I went with the soup of the day, it was monday, so I went with the Tomato Basil Soup. The soup was amazing! It was cheesy, hot, perfect for the rainy weather that day. You definitely get your moneys worth. Not only do they give you soup, but a very large portion of salad (recommend you order the lemon honey dressing, tastes yummy) and a piece of bread with crackers. My friend had ordered the mac and cheese, it was basically pasta with some cheese sauce (not real mac and cheese). Total letdown.
Review Source:Southfork us definitely my favorite restaurant in Pullman! Â The servers and staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive, all the food I've had there has been super delicious, and the atmosphere is great! Â Even on busy nights, the food and staff are consistently awesome!
Review Source:Tucked next to an Ace Hardware, who knew? We've been a few times now, everything has been really delicious, although most recently I had the southwestern salad and it was terrible. But maybe it was just an off day since I've loved everything else so far. The sliders with tomato chutney & tzatziki- wow! Very flavorful. Also the buffalo chicken sandwich was juicey & sauced well. Fiance had the primerib dip sandwich and it was yummy, I also really enjoy the skinny seasoned fried that came with. The bar is really cute, flat screen tvs & a really neat drink menu. Lots of PacNw beers like Black Butte, Rogue etc & interesting mixed drinks. Good food & atmosphere, probably my favorite place to eat in Pullman so far. Oh, the mac and cheese with Cougar Gold cheese is not to be missed *must have*.
Review Source:You know, I like this place. The food's pretty decent, for a bar, and the bartender, john, is nice.
I'm a fan of their chicken wings (not the price, though during happy hour, they are $3 cheaper).
The homemade ginger beer they make is really good as well.
I'm a fan of their chicken sandwich. Good price, decent sandwich, and the fries are always crispy and never greasy.
My boyfriend and I have become regulars of this awesome little restaraunt. Our regular little date night spot. Every time we go to Southfork, we always receive impecable service- friendly, but not overly so, and always attentive. Even to the point of setting my empty wine glass at the end of the table, and thirty seconds later there was someone asking if I needed another. There was just enough service to feel like they honestly cared about our dining experience, without leaving a trace of annoyance.
As for the wine and beer selection, there is nothing extravagent about it, though there are more than enough choices to satisfy anyone's thirst. The happy hour red blend I sampled was lovely (and $3 a glass!).
The last dish I had was the gyro, full of fresh ingredients (tomato, cucumber, red onion, hummus, and a special sauce on a pita. Delicious, light and fresh. Although I must say, the homemade pasta salad I chose as a side was phenomenal. At first glance, it is definetly a southwest influence with black beans and corn plentiful within the dish. WOW! That bowl of pasta salad was to die for. Completely took my mind off of the already scrumptious gyro. Just try it, trust me, you'll love it.
The only slightly low point came in the form of my boyfriend's entree. He ordered fish and chips featuring ale battered cod, homemade tartar, and homemade coleslaw- all of which I sampled myself, and were very, very good... With the exception of two of the three fish pieces. The one on top was larger and perfectly cooked, while the two under were slightly thinner, and obviously over cooked. Those two pieces were rubbery and nearly impossible to cut. It is important to mention that this is the first time we have had any issue with our food, after sampling most of the menu. We love this restaraunt, but they can't fix what isn't mentioned.
The menu is eclectic and full of freshness mixed with comfort food... and at very fair prices. Also featuring many local products made, grown or raised in Pullman. A simple, delicious and easy way to support local economy.
Though this restaraunt isn't necessarily cozy for some, I personally love the decor. It has a slightly modern feel mixed with rich colors. Perfect mix for Pullman.
If I had any minor complaints, it would be a more visible sign (they're tucked away in a corner, and most times you wouldn't notice it was there if you didn't already know), and also when you walk in, it's hard to know if you are supposed to seat yourself or wait to be seated... It's not clearly stated. One could feel akward standing there for two minutes not having a clue what's going on lol.
All in all, my favorite place in town, and more than worth checking out!
Dad's Weekend at WSU so the town is crowded;,so are the restaurants. I decided, however, this was the time to test the reviews of Southfork Public House.
We had a 15 minute wait which was just right. The ambiance is not about the decor and that's a fact. The restaurant is cubist and square, stark and essentially bare. The ambiance IS ABOUT the clientele. Students with parents this day.
With a name like Southfork I expected a ranch theme (ie Dallas) or a fishing theme (ie Southfork of the Salmon or Cleaewater Rivers). Disappointment!
The service was swift and constant as the waiter, Scott, saw to our wants and needs. We ordered the Buff Wings fir an appetizer. Great taste; not enough dipping sauce without asking for more. I ordered the Prime Rib Dip, daughter ordered the Southfork Salad, her boyfriend ordered the Buff Chicken Burger. The portions were large with a substantial mound of fries with the sandwiches.
Having just has stomach surgery two months ago, I'm not able to eat more than a few ounces each meal. Still, my taste buds are sharp. The Prime Rib Dip was tasty and the fries seasoned just right. Evan enjoyed his burger, and Kathleen and I shared each other's meal. We brought three boxes home.
Good food and reasonable prices. We'll try the dessert next time. It is worth coming back, but will have to share with the other places we like.
My husband and I have stopped in a few times since our first takeout experience. I had to update because we've been happy with every eat-in trip to Southfork. We usually go during happy hour for deals on beer and sit at the tall tables near the bar so that we can catch whatever game is on. The service has been wonderful and a waitress even gave us a heads up about the Palouse Falls Brewing Company
We usually order and share the clams and they are incredible. As Western Washingtonians, we didn't have high hopes for seafood so far inland but my husband and I have both agreed that it is the best plate of clams we have ever gotten anywhere. We've also gotten the pulled pork (fabulous), the fish tacos (good but not spectacular), the spring rolls (my husband liked it but I wasn't a fan), and the shoestring fries (we have delightful dreams about these fries!). I look forward to exploring the rest of the menu!
3 stars: 'A-OK.'
My wife and I liked this place, but both independently decided it didn't make enough of an impression to warrant going regularly.
It definitely seems to be scratching an itch in Pullman, because the place was hopping and there were lots of WSU-athletic department type folks present.
The food was standard pub fare, served promptly and a bit under-seasoned. We had the Cougar Gold Mac and Cheese (good, but not as good as Nectar's cougar gold mac), and the Bangers and Mash. I wish I could compare it to Rico's, but I can't remember the last time I had food there.
The service was great - both hosts and our server were very pleasant.
The atmosphere is also good - there's nothing like it in Pullman.
In the end we thought of it as an independent Applebees-type restaurant (comparable to Sangria in Moscow). We were glad we went, but it didn't wow us.
1-star for having 1 out of 5 dishes be worth eating at all.
I was all excited to try Southfork, as the wifey and I were just in town briefly and it was snowy and late. Ordered up some tasty sounding grub listed conveniently on their website. Things were coming up Evan!
However, sadness lurked beneath!
The menu described things beautifully, so expectations were high.
We ordered:
- Local bean, a bean salad supposedly with asparagus, but had only cucumber instead! What?! That's like swapping a BMW for a Kia. Geez.
- Salad spring rolls, meh, and fell apart immediately.
- Mac & Cheese, listed as 'adult' mac & cheese, but that must have been for really bland adults raised on the cheapest industrial mac & cheese ever. Even Kraft Premium is better than this. Also, "scallions" does not mean one piece of scallion in the entire order.
- Bangers & Mash, the only good thing on the menu, which is telling as they don't make their own sausage.
Overall, this place was full of sadness and was also really slow, despite there being nobody there. I had to wait a long time for take out even though they said 15 mins.
I'd like to upgrade my review from several months ago. Wait staff is still wonderful and ready for banter. Burgers are still on untoasted white buns but other menu items are outstanding. The longer they're open the better the get. Try there full rack of ribs. It'll feed two people. Add an appetizer like the lamb slider or the scotch egg and you won't leave there hungry!
Could really use some coat racks (if you're listening).
Pub food is pub food no matter where you go. But some pub food is better than others... and Southfork does a terrific job with their pub food.
Fresh fish in the fish and chips, creative plays on jalapeño poppers (called scorpion tails) and a great beer selection.
The service is great, attentive and friendly. Â They atmosphere is fun and energetic.
Overall Southfork gets my stamp of approval!
The first time I went here it was with a large group of grad students and faculty for a department event. Â The appetizers we had were really tasty, and they did a good job serving a large group.
The next time I went in on a football weekend by myself. Â It was quite crowded, a bit noisy, and it took a while to get my food. Â However, the chicken wings and pea salad that I had were really good, and everyone working there was really friendly and helpful even though they were incredibly busy.
Still drooling over my Rueben. The meat was great, swirled rye bread was great to look at and eat! The side salad dressing was very good as well (I think it was the honey-lime).
This restaurant is very good in comparison to the other restaurants Pullman has to offer, which is not many. Went on a slower afternoon after classes and sat in the bar. My only complaint is that the sandwich was under-sauced! I couldn't taste the mustard or ti dressing at all, and had to ask for more. BUT...disclaimer. I am obsessed with mustard and should probably not be considered a normal person on the subject.
Also, try the cobbler! Warm, gooey, fruity deliciousness covered in cold ferdinands vanilla ice cream? Yes please. Perfect to split!
Update: 1 April 2010
Really, guys? Â Five stars? Â REALLY? Â You have never had anything better than this? Â Really? Â Woohoo?
Update: 25 March 2010
We tried this place again and we are becoming regulars here, if only for the setting and the drinks.
This time we tried the Scorpion Tails as an appetizer. Â They were okay, decent flavor and a bit on the spicy side if only for the cheese and chipotle dipping sauce. Â The jalapeno chiles taste more like bell peppers with most of their spice pulled off. Â It's a tasty treat, but as an appetizer, it kills whatever taste buds you came in with. Â I tried the Mac & Cheese, thinking a restaurant of this quality would do something fancy with it. Â They didn't, unless you consider green onions and bacon flakes fancy. Â I couldn't taste neither the bacon nor the onion, but again, my taste buds were burned out after the Scorpion Tails. Â The pasta in the Mac & Cheese was overcooked. Â Something as easy as boiling pasta should never be done incorrectly. Â
The drinks are the saving grace at this place. Â Although I didn't try any, sticking to only beer, which the "Crimson" was as disappointing as where it comes from, the mixed drinks seemed to make everyone else at the table fairly happy. Â And funnier I should add.
Southfork is a nice place to sit with friends. Â The service is great, and they never complain about staying a long time, even after they're closed. Â That's one thing they having going for them. Â I imagine the food can only get better, and the drinks will keep us coming back.
I was satisfied with my experience at this recently opened Pullman eatery. The food was excellent. Order the Fish & Chips--the fish tastes fresh and for only $10, you get your money's worth! The breading was crispy but not overdone, crunchy, and had flecks of fine cornmeal to add some flair. The french fries are tasty, if you like the petite variety. They arrive seasoned. The Reuben sandwich was pleasant. Aside from the bread being a pumpernickel hoagie roll, I found it be yummy.
Nice place; just what Pullman needed.
