My family and I visited New Glarus over the 4th of July. Found this place while walking through town.
Tried the Spotted Cow and the Totally Naked (locally brewed beers). They were fantastic. Food was excellent, cheese sticks are to die for.
Even though we are FIB's, we were treated well, service was quick and friendly. Looking forward to going back.
I'm going to apologize to whoever will read this review in advance because I am about to get long-winded.
The service was super slow, but other than that our bar tender was friendly enough and he made some good suggestions. Great Selection of New Glarus Taps and decent bar food. Sriracha Chicken Bites were the appetizer of the month and they were different.
I have a problem with tourist towns who are annoyed by tourists. I am in no way that annoying tourist who expects to be waited on hand and foot, but gatdammit if I choose to attend your establishment at least act like you want us there until we catch a buzz and don't notice.
Came to New Glarus to visit the brewery and to celebrate a friend's bday weekend. Walked into this place at around 11:30PM, sat down and weren't even acknowledged until about 20-25 mins later and it wasn't busy. I don't know if they are necessarily used to "coloreds" up that way, but I felt like I was on display at the zoo. We played a couple songs on the juke box and whoever was running it kept fast forwarding them (after we paid) and some delightful man near the front of the bar occasionally yelled out "Nigger Nigger Nigger".
We moved to the back to play pool and it's pretty cool back there. They have a bunch of puzzles, books, board games.
Right before close as we were finishing the last of our drinks the bartender comes back to ask us to close out our tab (which we were doing anyway) because the owner is on his way and he is a "super crazy" dude and he is going to get mad that the bar is still open. Kinda made us feel like if we were still there when he came he was going to whoop our asses or something. I'm from Humboldt Park so that shit didn't scare me and I told him so, but he kept stressing it.
All in all, we probably should have left, but where were we really going to go. It was too early to sit in the hotel.
I really loved New Glarus and would go back, but they dropped the ball on customer service at several establishments we went to that weekend.
I am piggy-backing off this following review since I visited the Sportsman's along with this person and party...

...I liked New Glarus as well but I feel like even it didn't have the brewery that the small town friendliness just wasn't there. Â I enjoy small towns and have visited many of them but this was a first where you weren't receiving and reciprocating hello's and I usually don't mind that since I'm from the rush of the city. Â The Sportsman's was nothing pretty inside since along the walls, every available space, was used as storage for beverages and snacks or whatever else they wanted to stockpile. Â I really wish we would have had a couple beers and left but there weren't many options due to the time and town itself. Â The changing of our music left me feeling a little disrespected but the culprits ignorance spoke loudly and though I could play the music a million times over those locals were gonna wake up still dumb, deaf and blind for the rest of their lives. Â The Sportsman's B&G was not a solid establishment.
Interesting local bar. Definitely filled with locals who gave us tourists weird looks like "How the hell did you know this place exists?" My friends and I came here for some lunch around 1pm on a Friday and it was super busy. Apparently, some bus tour came through town and everyone and their mom decided to stop here. So needless to say, it took a while to get our food. The waiter/bartender took everyone's order except my friend's boyfriend and when he came to bring a drink he had forgotten to bring on his previous trip, we reminded him that we had one more person who needed to order.
Since we requested separate checks, the waitress only brought one plate to our table and had no idea anyone else had ordered anything. I guess they don't place tickets by table. Anyway, the food was pretty good for being bar food and it was cheap, so I'll give them that. Also, beer was relatively cheap and you can buy cases of New Glarus beer there cheaper than at the brewery, so I would recommend doing that.
The next day we came back for a little snack and we sat in the back of the bar. This area had a "library" with a bunch of random books and puzzles and I think there might have been a pool table. I shared some of my friend's nachos and they were deeelicious. They had a TON of cheese, but I don't mind that one bit. My boyfriend had some fried cheese curds that were apparently good, but I wasn't feeling well enough to try one.
Overall, they have good food. Just try to catch them when they're not so busy. And you'll likely have to go up to the bar if you want something because no one is going to come and find you.
Didn't eat anything but came here on a recommendation from one of the NG employees when we were looking for an older Thumbprint beer. Â And to my surprise, they surely sold beer and quite a bit of it! Â Besides the usual suspects, we found some leftover Uff-Da and a bottle of the Unplugged Abt. Â 6 packs were around $7.99. Â Patrons were pretty helpful, the barmaid was playing dice with the customers, which is what I saw at the Glarner Stube earlier. Â Good place to go to look for the hard to find NG stuff.
Review Source:Spent part of Saturday evening here after attempting to visit the Glarner Stube (which was too busy to get into). Â Upon reflection, I like Sportsman's better than the Stube...
Sportsman's is hard to describe. Â It's a long and narrow place - brightly lit with low suspended ceilings, and a ton of clutter. Â There's a book collection in the "middle" section of the bar that would rival most small town libraries. Â There's a great jukebox sitting alongside what looks like someone's "catch-all table." Â The crowd was friendly and their music choices were excellent if not shocking... I did a double-take when an older farmer-type (complete with overalls) played Lady Gaga and Florence and the Machine...
If you're looking for a great selection of New Glarus taps, Sportsman's has you covered. Â There were 6-8 NG taps, all of which were $3.50 - a steal. Â Other taps were $2.25 - total bargain.
We sampled one of the pizzas, which was quite tasty. Â Crust wasn't homemade, nor was the sauce, but it worked. Â I'd get another one in a heartbeat.
Service was friendly and attentive as well - Peggy kept our glasses full, and was plenty fun to chat with. Â The cook was also a cool guy - in between making meals, he'd come out and chat with folks and assist with filling drink orders. Â
It seems like a great neighborhood bar/restaurant. Â Character, charm, some quirkiness, good value, and great service. Â What more could you ask for? Â We'll be back!
Sportsman's Bar & Grill = WIN
Food = 3.75 stars
Service = 4.5 stars
Value = 5 stars
MISC = 4 stars
Me likey.
Oh - here's a tip for you procrastinators... they sell carry-outs here until midnight, and the prices rival those of Copp's. Â WIN.
Great spot. Local dive bar with lots of TVs. They serve all the New Glarus brews and, their brats come from the meat shop next door. I had the footlong pork brat with sauerkraut and it rocked! The brat was dense, juicy and flavorful, the kraut had bacon in it, S.U.'s  cole slaw had horseradish in it (a plus) and the fries came out hot and perfectly fried. They had good mustard and the beer was great. What's not to like???
The joint screams local and I'd eat here again in a heartbeat.
Food OK but we ordered a grilled chicken we asked about the mayonayse as it was sitting out but they said it was OK put on sandwich and it was warm and then they said it had only been out since 11:30 and it was 4 and they didn't offer to replace it and charged us for it. The atmosphere in the bar don,t fit in with the area. I wouldn't recommend this place the cook was waitress I think were the owners were rude to us. Don,t go try the other eating places in the area.
Review Source:Okay, well if you want a greasy burger this is your place in New Glarus. Â I wouldn't knock the place for having greasy bar food, cause it's a dive. Â They don't try to hide that fact either, so no sense in complaining about the nature of the food or menu. Â If you go here expect to see 6 variations of cheeseburgers and a few fried chicken and fish sandwiches. Â They do carry nearly all of NG Brewings beers, which I guess should be obvious, but it's damn good too. Â The fried cheese curds are purdy darn good though.
Review Source:Love this place. This is the only bar that stays open 365 days out of the year. Fred has been running this place for probably a good 25 years, or longer, not quite sure. They have a great selection of beers. Sportsman serves food til about closing time. Their pizza is alright. They have potato wedges that I seem to enjoy. They have a beautiful selection of the local New Glarus Brewery beers available. If youre ever stranded in New Glarus on Christmas day and the relatives are driving you bonkers, go to Sportsman's youll love it.
