My husband and I were staying at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda. We were quite surprised at how delicious the food was. My husband had the fresh fried oysters and fish and chips. I don't like seafood, but after tasting the fish I might try again. We have learned its the place the locals go to that you find good people, excellent food, and a place like home.
Review Source:We were here on 3/13/13. So at first this review was going to get a 5 stars, even for a "dive bar"! Friendly staff as we walked in and the specials that were written on the wall looked good! We read the reviews on yelp and decided to eat here after having a couple of beers. My father in-law thought his frozen fried oysters were ok, my mother-in-law thought her shrimp Louise salad was great (it was huge, especially for the "small"!) Â and her and I thought her bowl and I thought my cup of "special" smoked salmon chowder were yummy. My fish and chips (that I got because of all the great reviews) was pretty good for frozen store bought fish and the onion rings that I got for an extra cost were pretty good. Now on to my hubby's "special". So the special on the sign was BBQ ribs, coleslaw, potato salad, and beans for $9.95, great deal!....so the waitress told us, then she asked my hubby what kind of dressing he wanted for his salad since it was "included" with the special...even better deal!! The ribs were fall off the bone (but with not much flavor) and the beans were cold out of the can pork and beans, and the potato salad was nonexistent (yeah, as in never got it).....but the blue cheese dressing on the salad he said was great! So when we got the bill I was a little disappointed when we were charged extra for a dinner salad for a salad that my hubby wasn't even going to get (and didn't even get the potato salad that was on the menu!!!) and we were charged $4.95 for the chowder advertised for $3.95 and $3.95 for the chowder advertised for $2.95. My husband didn't want me to say something, even though I thought I should tell them to change their sign....overall good food and nice people (the owner or manager said Hi an thank you as we left) but funny how a whole $3 can leave such a bad taste in your mouth...if you are that desperate to charge tourists an extra $3 at a local bar I'd almost rather pay the ridiculous prices at the pelican.
Review Source:If you are interested in checking out the local culture of the Oregon Coast, this is the place to be. Â It is really small and has limited seating, and the service is incredibly slow if the staff doesn't already know your name. Â I ordered a local beer, which was great and not too expensive. Â However, I also ordered the local clam chowder and fish and chips. Â I was not blown away by either, which was really unfortunate. Â My clam chowder had lots of the fatty parts of the bacon in it and not too much clam in it. Â Additionally, every other spoonful of the chowder I had was cold. Â Ick! Â the fish and chips had really good dipping sauce, and I tried the Joe's fries (potato wedges), which were decent but not the best ever. Â It took an incredibly long time to find seating, and the food was so-so. Â Overall, it's probably a better place to hang out and grab a beer than to go for dinner.
Review Source:I travel the country year round and lately have landed in Pacific City for a few months. I walked in this place and was instantly at home. Good mix of tourists and locals, super friendly staff and some kick ass food! Â Prices are beyond reasonable and portions are ample. Â I would highly recommend visiting this great bar and meeting some of the friendliest people on the west coast. And by the way, their ribeye steak dinner, for the price, cannot be beaten anywhere, period.
Review Source:Thank you, Yelp, for bringing me to this awesome dive. Â Without you, I would not have strayed from the 101 to visit this cute little town.
Our server was fantastic - friendly and salty and with great recommendations for local brews. Â And, I loved watching all the locals, who all seemed to know each other quite well.
Of course we had the fish and chips. Â Locally caught, and dropped at the bar just the night before. Â The fish is made with a beer batter using hefeweizen, and coated with panko. Â Golden and crispy on the outside, fresh, plump and juicy fish on the inside. Â Plainly fresh, the fillets are not fishy at all and are still firm.
We also tried the chowder. Â It was okay. Â I mean, pretty good, with big chunks of clam, but nothing unexpected.
I don't recall which beers we tried, but the local porter is smooth and relatively light for such a dark beer, and I had an excellent IPA, as well.
I would totally stop here again if ever in the area.
Stopped in Pacific City to check out the sand dunes. It was dinner time so wandered into this place. DEFINITELY felt like a locals place, with a very comfortable vibe. There's all kinds of interesting signs covering the walls. They've got Rogue Dead Guy Ale on tap. Basic pub food at approachable prices. Had the fish n chips. The price at $9.95 is fantastic, although being right ON THE OCEAN I'd have preferred to pay a bit more to get something fresh, rather than what seemed to be generic frozen fried fish. Still, you get to choose from a variety of french fry types (including waffle cut and jo jo's). And at least they didn't charge us a lot for the fish and chips. (Maybe we just had an "off night" for the fish n chips, as the other reviewers loved them. Tasted just a step above Gorton's to me. Oh well). Service is SUPER friendly. Bar tender was adorable, and wait staff was pleasant, too. But I think one should stick to basic pub food here. The burgers looked tasty and I'd have had less high expectations for those. All in all a pleasant place to relax with a beer. Also the type of place where you can easily strike up a conversation with the other patrons, should you wish. There is pinball and some video poker games in the back, too. The tables and chairs are of mixed styles, which is fun. Some tables even have large comfortable high-backed wheeled office chairs.
Review Source:Some people don't put out on the first date, I don't give hand out 5 stars on the first meal; but sportsman's makes it hard to stick to that rule.
I liked everything about this place, and I'm pretty sure if I lived in the neighborhood, I'd be going here all the time. The atmosphere is fun, the service was great, and the food was exceptional - in particular, batter and fried stuff is of a quality you don't run into very often. The onion rings, fish and chips, steak chips, and criss-cross fries were perfect - the only thing that could've made them better would've been some sort of fancier dip, bleu cheese or aoili or something, but they don't even need it because they're so good on their own.
The swiss dip sandwich was excellent, the burger and fish'n'chips my friends ordered looked delicious... I really really want to go back to this place again, and the next time I'm in the area, I will go out of my way to do so.
We go to the Sportsman at least twice a year while on vacation in Pacific City. Great food! Especially the fish and chips! The staff is great and someone is always winning video lottery. The Sportsman is a fun place to go with friends, eat some great food and maybe get a little crunk.
Review Source:Sporty's is the local hangout of Pacific City. It's a great dive bar for the coast and is fairly notorious throughout Oregon. The food is good and cheap, I recommend the burgers, burritos, and Club. They serve a mean cocktail and have a fairly good selection of local microbrews on tap (also if you are looking for a Pabst or Hamms they also have those in a can). The dinner crowd usually comes in about 4pm through 6pm and then the younger crowd comes in about 8pm. There is a juke box, slot machines, a pinball machine, 2 pool tables and several TV's. The staff is very friendly and if you come more than twice they will remember what your favorite drink is. Breakfast is also served on the weekends and is the best your going to find in Pacific City.
Review Source:An awesome local Pub.
Their grub is also local, freshest fish and chips this boy has ever had.
A full bar, with lots of beers, a tendency for strong drinks, and a smile with every one. The staff is sweet, and the local cast of characters are precious.
Lots of good fresh local items, oysters, scallops, clams and of course the incredible fish and chips. Their French onion soup took me by surprise. It was delish!
No view, but no view prices either, and a little innocent eavesdropping on the fishermen and their awesome stories makes for a great bit of entertainment.
With two margaritas and my meaI was out of there for less than $20.
Will be back for SURE!
So, we tried the Pelican brewpub and there was about a 30min wait and no bar seating.
Pacific City has a rather limited list of choices and the Sportsman's is only about 2 blocks away, next to the Shell station (the only gas station in town).
From the outside it looks like a nice sportsbar and it boasts having some food as well as a handful of microbrews on tap.
Inside, the place looks like your traditional, local, coast bar.
The place and the staff seems to have been there forever.
A couple of pool tables, jukebox, recliners and video poker round out the charm. Â Two TVs.. one with the news and another with drag racing tell it all!
The food.. Â I must say, it was excellent! Â We shared some fish and chips, which were apparently dory caught the day before and was breaded and fried by the bartender herself.. Â The side of fries and coldslaw were both very good as well.
A couple of pints and fish and chips came to under $20 with tip and we lerf full and happy..
The Sportsman's Pub-N-Grub is a must if you are in Pacific City!
