Apparently i wrote in the tip, not review. Long story short, echoing the prices too high! My steak was an overdone new york strip, not a medium well marbled ribeye. :( very disappointed. I felt like my server should've gone back to verify with the chef! My sides were delicious but small portions. The casual dressed staff and paper lined linen begs for lower prices. They did have sports on, but not the USA mens soccer game we were looking for. Second time eating there in 3 years, not returning.
Review Source:Only came in here because of a $50 voucher from Sedona Summit resort. Â Potentially fun atmosphere, decent burger, but the pizza was terrible - the dough was barely cooked in the center. Â It's just not that hard to cook a pizza folks... Â Then to top it off, they gave our party of 3 a mandatory 20% tip, because we were using a voucher. Â So for the three of us the total was $76.47. Â Yep - two burgers and a lame pizza. Â Shocking.
Review Source:We arrived after 1 pm on a weekday. Â Sparsely populated dining room. Â Our waitress was fast, attentive and helpful. Â I had the pork chop with the corn on the cob and southwestern cole slaw sides - the food was excellent & came quickly. I especially loved that the cole slaw had a true "bite" to it. Â My husband had the Caesar salad with flank steak - loved it. My brother had the Philly steak and onion rings - equally good. Â We were just very impressed by the food. Â Like many other reviews, my only criticism is that it is a bit pricey. It would be nice if they had a different lunch and dinner menu to be able to lower the lunch prices a bit.
Review Source:We were drawn here by a $25 voucher that came with a LivingSocial coupon for the Sedona Summit (also a DRI property). A good lunch, if a bit pricey (not a major concern under the circumstances, but I think I would have winced just a bit had I been paying full boat).
Excellent bleu cheese burger....ordered medium rare, and served exactly that way, for which I was grateful. Overdone burgers are a bane of the restaurant industry, IMO. My lady wife's buffalo chicken sandwich was a bit - well, overpowering, in the quantity and intensity of the applied sauce.
Very nice server - attentive and efficient, one of those people to whom it was easy to warm immediately (an older Hispanic fellow, if S&S management is reading this - didn't catch his name). The other server was kind enough to approach and ask if we didn't want the overly-loud TV sports broadcast soundtrack killed and music substituted, given that we were the only clients in the place at the time. Why, yes! Quite thoughtful of him.
A respectable place to lunch while perusing Tlaquepaque.
One note: Since Diamond Resorts took over, they have apparently decided to rename the place to Steak and Sticks. This is reflected on their menus and business cards and on the 20% coupons the resort gives out, but the signs have yet to be updated as of this review.
Ok, the main reason we go here when we are in Sedona is that we are always staying at Los Abrigados, so it's an easy stumble from the room. Â Over Thanksgiving weekend, the place was super busy, but in the past we've typically been the only people there during the lunch hour or the between hours. The burgers and sandwiches are enormous and delicious. The tap selection is small, but our first visit there they had HopNotch on tap which made my husband super happy. Our boys love playing pool, and there's no charge to play while you're there, so it's really a fun place to hang out. Â There's outdoor seating if the weather is nice, lots of TVs for watching whatever game you choose, and there's free wifi, although it's not very strong (which is true for most of the resort) and overall it's worth the visit.
I ate here this past week with 2 other dining companions. Â The place seemed cavernous but mostly empty when we ate there. Â As a matter of a fact we had to wait quite a few minutes at the hostess station before someone appeared to seat us. Â It was around 12:30 too, so not outside of lunch time.
For my entree I ordered a Waldorf salad with chicken which the waitress warned would be sweet. Â Boy, she was not kidding as my salad was overly sweet and absolutely drenched in dressing. Â In retrospect I should ordered the Cobb salad like one of my companions did.
The bottom line for me is that I would not come back here. Â The food wasn't too great and the whole place felt sort of weird.
As with all restaurants, what you want out of your dining experience will determine whether you like this place. Priced like a steakhouse, outfitted like a sports bar.
I was there to watch a non-local sporting event and they were happy to set me up near one of the 20 or so TVs and tune in my game. One star for that.
They are part of the Los Abrigados resort, and while I agree they are not what you would expect for "resort dining", they are the kind of place I like. The meals are overpriced, as many have stated here, but the resort makes available as many 20% off coupons as you want, which brings pricing back inline. You could argue a good place that people wanted to eat in wouldn't need to give out coupons, but I was appreciative. One star for that.
I was there for 2.5 hours watching a game, and expected that I may get some attitude from the waitress. I was not disappointed. She was cold as ice taking my order "I'll start with just a beer.". Later, she didn't like my observation that there are no small appetizers (they are meals - plate of nachos, that kind of thing), but I spied the sides and asked for a side of mixed vegetables (I am a vegetarian). It was small and delicious. Then I had the wood fired pizza and it was also well above average. Two stars for the food, minus one for the cold waitress.
Dinner came and went and it was only the 6th inning, and I had spied a PBR special ($2) at the bar (I have a soft spot for PBR). I had a second round, and in the 7th a 3rd. I capped the night off with a 15 yr Dalwhinnie, which was terrific. One star for a bar that knows how to price PBR as well as respectable single malts.
I thought about dropping half a star for the springs that were sticking into my behind in the cushioned seat in the booth they sat me in, but I moved a butt-width to the right and solved the problem to my satisfaction. Also, the 4 drunk girls (part of a wedding party) that came in were highly entertaining, as was the door host who spent the entire night standing at their table shamelessly flirting with them. To the extent that noone was there to welcome new guests (it is a wait to be seated establishment). People were wandering into the restaurant after who knows how long waiting out front? Some people would take a half a star away for that, but I would be more inclined to add. Entertainment value. :-)
I think this restaurant is an embarrassment to the Los Abrigados resort. It should be closed, renamed and reinvented. What is "Stakes and Sticks" supposed to signify anyway? Â A sports bar, really? Â Even a $30 lobster dinner can't fill this place up. It's just not working. Â It is out of character with the area and with the resort. Â The lobster was good though.
I also found out that in Arizona it is not allowed to open a bottle of wine that a customer brings to a restaurant. I think you can openly carry a gun here, but not enjoy your own bottle of wine in a restaurant.
Came here on a Monday night and it was pretty much empty, but it was happy hour!
The drinks prices were very reasonable (for Sedona) and bartender and lingering servers were very hospitable. It was a fun place to hang out. They have three pool tables, two backgammon high top tables, and a chess table. We played everything and very much enjoyed ourselves. We also had a not too special dinner of salad and Pizza. You can't mess up those to items, right! The Pizza was hand made in there wood fire pizza oven, very good. We also had an adult dessert, chocolate martini. The drinks were the stand out, but the food wasn't too bad either. If you are looking for a sports bar type..ish atmosphere, it's a good place.
I can't believe this place is in a resort. The food is terrible. We spent New Years here and our bill totaled over $100 for three people. The food doesn't look or sound like it belongs in a resort! It's like mismatched sides on a menu. Our waitress was trying to rush us out too because she said she had to work the morning shift so she wanted to get out. At the end she took our card, brought it back and left. We stayed a little longer at our table finishing our drinks and then left, Horrible! Oh and if you have children that are still in diapers beware of these bathrooms. They do not have changing tables! I had to change my baby on the bathroom sink because I didn't want to put him on the floor. I can't believe this place has been opened for as long as it has!
Review Source:It is Sedona....but that doesn't give you the right to over charge for so-so food. Come on! Four Peaks bar offers much better food for better prices!! The place is nicely decorated and if you want to save 20% here is the trick!
Going outside there is an information place with 2 persons on each side of an arch. Search for Jason or the guy who will offer you a free night at the Diamond Resort (or something like that) and he will give you the 20% off for this place.
I had the french onion soup which tasted good and my friend had the bbq pulled pork sandwich which was nothing special.
I'd give a whole star to the service, really nice, polite and friendly people who deserve their tip, but again... $$ for food items should be reconsidered.
I went to watch the Suns game and this place was the only place open after 9 that was close by. The atmosphere was awful and the bartender was the most unfriendly person alive. Im not sure if everyone feels the way I do, but if your going to bartend you should let people know your name, this way I don't have to say "Hey you, can I get another?" I am giving this 2 stars because he put the suns game on for us.
unless you really need a drink look else where.
I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because the ambiance & decor are good :)
If you want to watch a game & you just need a tv this is a great place to go!
I gave this place 2 chances. The first I had soup & salad. The soup was sweet potato, it was bland. The salad was garlic ceasar & that was garlicky to the max, but it did say that in the name so I can't really hold that against them, lol.
The second time I ordered 2 pizzas. They were, sadly, the worst pizzas I've had in a long while :( They come in 1 size, 10 inch. I got 2 for our little group. 1 was pepperoni with jalapenos & extra sauce. They forgot the jalapenos & it not only had no extra sauce, it had nearly NO sauce at all. What it did have was TONS of salty cheese. The second pizza was a bbq chicken. They forgot the bbq & replaced it with, once again, TONS of salty cheese. I also ordered chocolate covered bacon,,,, because it's chocolate covered bacon & how could I not try that, right? Turns out it's they do not use the thick, crunchy, good bacon... it tasted like barely cooked bacon covered in thick dry chocolate... the grease just explodes in your mouth..Mmmmm!! I say that sarcastically, lol! Add a couple of bottles of water & some soft drinks to this last order & it ran me approx $50. Worst money I've ever spent!
Even if you staying at the resort, I highly recommend either going a little further out to an outside restaurant OR stock your rooms fridge with some food :)
Food is solid but nothing special. I felt it was a little overpriced for the quality. I had a bleu burger with sweet potato fries which was good but nothing to rave about. Our server was nice and friendly so no complaints there. Ambience lacked. The restaurant was mostly empty and had lots of TVs. With so many great restaurants in Sedona (including Oak Creek Grill which is only a few hundred yards away) there's no reason to go to Stakes & Sticks unless it's to play billiards or watch horse races.
Review Source:Checked out Stakes in order to watch the Bulls v Hawks game. Â There isn't much to choose from in Sedona when it comes to sports bars. Â Some folks probably opt for the Open Range, but I was less than thrilled w/ a meal I had there and going back isn't on my list. Â We checked Stakes out the night before the game when cruising the shops next door and decided to give it whirl.
The hubbie loved our waiter. Â Sadly, I don't remember his name, but he was very attentive and extremely generous w/ french fries. Â The food was okay. Â Definitely not the place to get my wing cravings satiated, nothing like Native New Yorker, Vine or Zipps, but they were decent. Â The fries were yummy and we liked the thin crust pizza. Â It was lobster night, so a lot of older locals were there partaking of the lobster.
It is very non-sports bar because they are trying to cater the offtrack racing crowd and it looks like a hotel dining room. Â That was one annoying thing, our table was right under a TV w/ one of the racetracks on it so we had several betters hovering over us during their races.
If in Sedona and needing to see a sporting event we would return. Â We Phoenicians are soooo spoiled w/ our plethora of sport bar options.
Mediocre at best, the mac and cheese had crushed chezits for a topping. The fries werent worth the calories and rosemary brick cooked chicken that sounded so good was fairly bland with greasy skin. Its only saving grace was the wedge of lemon it came with so i could add some flavor to it.
Review Source:My family and I came here for Christmas dinner. Â There was a prix fixe menu, so I can only give my review of that experience.
Located in the Los Abrigados Resort & Spa, Stakes & Sticks is supposed to be one of the upscale restaurants in the Sedona area. Â While the restaurant atmosphere certainly gives the impression of a higher end restaurant, its food did not meet my expectations. Â The presentation was average at best. The food was not particularly exceptional in any way, and the dessert I ordered, a gingerbread brulee, was sandy and disappointing. Â I expected it to be served similar to a creme brulee in a ramekin with a torched crispy top, however instead it was a saggy, sliced piece of sandy mush.
All that being said, Stakes & Sticks is a pretty good restaurant for groups, and the prices are quite reasonable. Â Also, it was conveniently located next to the outdoor Christmas light display, Red Rock Fantasy.
You don't go to Sedona to tour sports bars. That being said, we were in town camping for 5 days, and here was a football game that Wifey and I couldn't miss. We had heard from several sources that this was the place to find it on TV, and it was our best option. OK... There's nothing really "wrong" with this place- Food was OK, service was OK... But, My Wife put is best when she said she thought she was watching the game in a library!!!! The atmosphere, well, quite frankly, sucked beyond belief! There were a hand full of people in there, very subdued and reserved, and this place was no fun at all! If it ever comes to trying to catch a game again in Sedona, we'll go anywhere else but here.
Review Source:We ended up heading to the bar here at the end of the Christmas lights tour, because we needed somewhere to sit down and write our thoughts on the card. Â Doing so with the help of a beer made a nice difference. Â It turns out we ended up sampling dinner here too, since Oak Creek Brewery had closed early. Â Good thing this happened, since we sampled more brews and some of the food.
Overall, it was a really comfortable place to be, and kind of an amusing cross-section of Sedona. Â You had your people in ski jackets ordering top shelf drinks, families of tourists in jeans, young couples, and a handful of locals. Â Combine that with pictures of celebrities on the walls, some southwestern knick knacks, and a nice layout for being, well, a sports bar on top of all that. Â
We had service at the bar, since it was fairly dead, and it worked out well. Â The bartender was a student an NAU in Flagstaff, and was not only very friendly, but had spot on recommendations for the beers and food. Â It's typical bar food, but it was tasty bar food. Â Had a fairly good chicken sandwich and don't pass up the spinach artichoke dip (or something similar -- very worth it). Â Beer selection was limited mostly to one brewery out of Portland [0], but Portland does know how to brew some beers, so I didn't mind. Â
Overall, I prefer Oak Creek, but I'd definitely go back to this place anytime as well.
[0] It kills me that I don't remember the name, but it was an organic brewery.
If you are looking for a place to watch some sports, bet on the ponies and imbibe in some drinks...This is the place.
They have a decent wine and beer selection that is reasonably priced. Typical bar food, nachos, burgers, pizzas & salads.
Their house salad is surprisingly good with a basil dressing and mixed baby greens. Also, their pizzas are wood-fired.
Nachos are very cheesy and also good.
Having lived in Sedona for 15 years my family and I decided to try steaks and sticks again since we had not been since their remodel into a "celebrity grill". I was sorely disappointed. This is definetly your place if you are looking to watch a game and have a beer, but NOT a good place for dinner. My dad ordered a vegetarian sandwich that was served ice cold, my one year old got the greasiest bland pizza I have ever seen, and my onion soup was tepid at best.
Service was good and our waitress, sherry, did her best to be accomodating but food just didn't make the bar.
Here in beautiful Sedona, where the rich, red soil soaks the canyon walls in brilliant hues, like a vibrant water color painting of blended earth tones from a southwestern desert palette, and where people come from all over the world to get a glimpse of this spiritual, heavenly beauty of natural wonder, an example of one of God's finest earthly creations, where artists settle to get the natural inspirations from the vivid colors from burnt sienna to yellow ochre from the carved open cliffs that reach upward in majestic beauty to the sky, and blend with the whispy brush strokes of vibrant yet muted colors against angel hair clouds that subdue a golden sunset in the endless sky at dusk.........
is a sports bar with referee stripe clad waiters serving in front of large flat screen TVs?
Huh?
The full name of this restaurant, which is one of several in an adobe styled modern resort in the Tlaquepaque Village mall in Sedona, the spiritual capital of the Southwest where people die in old Indian steam huts trying to cleanse their souls of modern day influences in search of a deeper meaning of life, is....
Stakes & Sticks Sports Bar & Celebrity Grill.
We sat in front of a 60 inch flat screen showing a college football game between Eastern Carolina and Virginia Tech, bookended on either side with 42 inch plasma TVs of NHL hockey games, as we pondered between Salmon sliders and New York steak. That s the sports part of the place. Above us was a signed plaque from the captain of the 1973 Notre Dame Football team, who won the national championship. I guess that is the celebrity part of the place.
Actually, we ordered an appetizer of Prime Rib Quesadillas ($7.95) which were excellent, served with a trio of sour cream, salsa and guacamole dips, with grilled onions inside 3 stuffed flour tortilla wedges.
The special  tonight was grilled, large, bacon wrapped scallops ($19.95) served with rice and crisply cooked fresh vegetables. A 10 oz New York strip steak ($23.95) and a Grilled Salmon ($19.95) were offered with a choice of 2 sides, which included market vegetables, portobello mushroom, 1 pound baked potato, wild rice, or garlic mashed potatoes.
Service was decent albeit young, because the place was pretty empty on a Thursday night in early November.
One beer, mixed drink, and one wine took the total bill for 3 to $100 before tip. Not bad for a resort dinner.
Much cheaper than paying $9k and fasting for 36 hours and sweating out death in a tarped, heated tent.
Located about one mile from downtown Sedona, Stakes & Sticks was originally known as "On the Rocks."
Nonetheless, the food is good. I recommend the calamari and chicken fingers as appetizers.
As entrees, their Canyon Western Burger, Vortex Burger, pizza, and Smoked BBQ Baby Back Ribs are good options.
Appetizers range from about $7 to $10. Their entrees range from about $8 to $23.
That's 3.5 stars, shading to 4. Â This used to be called Steaks & Sticks but now it's called Stakes & Sticks. Â The Stakes part refers to opportunities for gambling. Â When we first had dinner here 6 or 8 years ago it was an attractive steakhouse replete w/ dark wood and a quiet elegance. Â Two years ago it was still like that. Â In the interim a companion restaurant/sports bar and breakfast place called On the Rocks has been turned into a couple of "premium suites" and its functions and ambiance have been absorbed by Steaks & Sticks and its name has been changed to reflect that. Â I had a memorably disappointing breakfast at On the Rocks two years ago and the breakfast cooks showed a similar lack of skill w/ eggs a couple of days ago. Â The only saving grace on both occasions was the same engaging and charming Central American waiter.
Tonight's dinner was much better than their breakfasts. Â Mondays and Tuesdays they have a prime rib special and that's what I had. Â Alan had a grouper sandwich and onion soup to start. Â I had a house salad, which was good. Â The onion soup was exceptional, one of the best I can remember, the flavor rich and concentrated. Â We ordered extra vegetables, asparagus and brocolini. Â The prime rib was rare/medium rare as ordered and had just a bit of a crispy crust and very little fat. Â It came w/ either a 16 oz (!) baked potato or garlic mashed. Â I opted for the latter, which were deliciously authentic, lumpy, full of garlic and w/ skins. Â Just like I would make them. Â Service was attentive and Alan's diet Coke was refilled 3 times w/o request. Â I don't like the change in atmosphere. Â I prefer not to eat surrounded by television sets. Â Only at McCovey's is that OK. Â Although the food and service were good, I can't say we'll go back when we're next here.
