I went to Starting Gate Saloon with some trepidation since many of the previous  reviews mention terrible service. I was there with a group of seven guys and I thought-----OH NO!!!!
Well the service by Casey was perfect.
Also the report on great pizza was correct. I ordered a thin crust well done with cheese pepperoni and Italian sausage and it came deliciously as ordered. Cheeseburgers, hamburgers, Reuben's, bean soup, etc.----all seven were very happy!
The beer was reasonable and cold.
I would go back in a New York minute.
Walked up here this past Friday with my fiance, as we had a long week and the only cure was pizza and a pitcher.
I love me some dive bars so we figured why the hell not.
The food was okay- your standard frozen bar fare thrown in a deep fryer and thrown in a basket.
We ordered a pizza- it was decent, nothing special but it satisfied the pizza craving. Â The beer was cold.
I would give this place a 3, but our server disappeared for 45 minutes once we got our food. I love chit chatting with my hubby to be, but we felt like d*cks sitting in a 4 person booth taking up prime real estate when people are wandering around looking for a place to sit.
I'm glad we went but I think we'll frequent other bars in the area for pizza and a pitcher.
Why yes I will write a review. Â I had been through here before with a good friend when we stopped in for a beer. Â At the time it was during the day and on the weekend so no one was really there. Â We split a pitcher and some jalapeno poppers. Â Nothing special but we had heard mixed reviews so figured we'd try it again sometime. Â Fast forward to about 9 months later and here we are. Â We went back for a second try to get a pizza and some bur (beer).
We started out with some cheese fries and jalapeno poppers. Â When I asked the waitress if the cheese on the cheese fries was melted or nacho style cheese she about had a mental breakdown. Â I immediately regretted asking and after a moment of her silence and eye squinting she spoke up with the answer. Â After that I was worried any sudden questions would throw her into a panic. Â So we hung out and after our food came she disappeared. Â After what felt like a half an hour she sprung up out of nowhere and asked if we needed anything. Â Seeing as our apps (appetizers) had long been demolished and our 2nd pitcher had already arrived. Â It had to be time for pizza, so we put in our order and added some breadsticks. Â All the while watching our waitress write everything down frantically. Â I can't imagine her having much experience because not only did she disappear for long, long moments at a time but she also seemed overwhelmed by everything that was going on. Â
Our pizza came and 2 slices in, out come the breadsticks. Â Great. Â It's really hard for me to write a bad review or a low scoring one. Â Because in all honesty an older woman, my guess was the owner, came out and checked on tables periodically. Â So the sympathy card gets played and although this 3 stars is a very low one. Â I genuinely feel bad for the owners. Â They have prime real estate, ok food and sub par service. Â It needs to be updated and fast. Â I can't imagine bagged fried food would keep you in business for long, in this day and age.
