Interesting place across the street from Taps Fish House and Brewery in the Dos Lagos shopping center in Corona. Menu looked great, unfortunately everyone's food was subpar in general and just very poor for a gastropub. Pastrami sandwich was chewy and dry, goat cheese/onion flatbread had raw dough taste and the caramelized onions tasted like water. Shepherds pie was bland, the poutine explosion was a bit much and wasn't really enjoyed.
The tap list was surprisingly good with a good dose of California beers: Karl Strauss, Port, Lost Abbey, Alesmith, Bootleggers, Packinghouse, Manzanita, Weins..and then a handful of German and Belgian stuff. Also had GI Sophie Paradisi on which was a surprise. Sampler flights available.
Service was quick but a little too much with the fanfare/entertainment portion that grew annoying. Clean atmosphere that has a semi steam-punk feel but not thoroughly drawn out.
Interesting place, the only problem is the food was a major letdown to the point where I'm actually shocked they have not fired the chef or at least taught him how to use salt and make things like bread, pizza, and caramelized onions.
Value is low because for similar money I could go to The Salted Pig in Riverside, which is an actual gastropub.
We will NEVER come back!! After attending an outdoor concert at Dos Lagos tonight, we went to have a drink and some food. We waited for 10 minutes before we had any acknowledgment. Once our drink orders were taken, it took 20 min to get the drinks. We ordered a salad, margherita flat bread and shepard's pie. The salad and flat bread arrived after 25 minutes and the shepard's pie arrived after an additional 20 minutes. It took 3 requests and 45 minutes to get requested glasses of water and we were told we had to wait for clean glasses. There 127 varieties of bottled beer on the menu and the waitress told us none of the 127 bottled beers were available because they only get deliveries once a month. She stated that since July 4th they have not had availability of bottled beer and suggested ordering draft beer. We tried to order a glass of wine and we were told that was not available. Very slow service. Food was quality was ok but the lack of customer service negatively impacted the entire experience.
Review Source:OMG don't go to this awful place. Â The menu is ridiculous and does not describe what you are getting. We ordered Duck fat fries with house made curry ketchup.Turned out to be regular fries with ketchup with a tsp of curry powder! Then I ordered what I though was a duck breast which turned out to be a pile of fries covered in gravy, sweaty cheese with maybe an ounce of shredded duck for $12.
They also serve English beers ice cold. I fail to understand how the waiter did not warn me of what I was ordering. It was just awful!
The decor was very steam puckish and worked well but there were no patrons. Now I understand why!!
Went here today for the first time and was kinda excited to try something new. First off , the waitress was super friendly and nice! No complaints at all with the service! However, they were out of 3 different types of beers I wanted which was surprising since it was a Friday afternoon! I would assume they would have all there beers stocked up for the weekend..Disappointing! The flatbread pizza I ordered was good as well as the a.m burger my bf got, but a little on the pricey side. Not a variety of good choices. Overall experience was good, not too sure if it would be my first choice to go back.
Review Source:I've come here twice, now, and both visits were enjoyably similar. Mari, as friendly and attentive (not to mention attractive) as servers get, tended to my party's needs each time; patiently fielding any questions then taking our orders, and following up, often while juggling other tables. She seemed knowledgeable about both the beer (I ordered a flight of 4 + 1 individual draft on each outing), and food menus (had "California Sunrise" brunch 1st time, 1/3 of "Mad Dog Burger" and pulled pork sandwich 2nd time). I look forward to a future 3rd meal & drink!
I don't get others' complaints on the long wait; It's a gastropub, not fast food, so 15-20 minutes isn't an unreasonable length to me. The brunch was simple, yet surprisingly satisfying. The 24 oz burger we split was tasty and the thickest patty I've ever eaten! The pulled pork was filled more thinly, but equally scrumptious and sweetly spicy!
Neither the fries nor popcorn tasted as good as their descriptions sounded, though; the former were dry with a sprinkle of melted cheese and the latter (also dry--where's the "bacon/duck fat"?) had a thin layer of crumbled bacon and a sprinkle of rosemary needles on top. The fries are only saved by the delicious curry ketchup they come with. Good attempt to jazz up two normally common side-order staples, though.
At $12 for fries & $24 for the big burger, I'd say each was $4-5 overpriced; ditto for the brunch. While $5 for four 5 oz beers is fair, $9 per regular glass is a bit high, but I've only docked 1 star, because you're paying for the hip decor (antique/industrial, or steampunk), stellar service and variety of imported/domestic true microbrews.
We couldn't have said it better than Jeff S. Â We wanted this place to do well, as it's one of the few non chain restaurants in the area, but it doesn't deliver, and it's a shame. Â We have gone there twice now, and were disappointed the first time, but thought we'd give it another chance....we were even more disappointed the second time around. The menu SOUNDS great, but EVERYTHING we had was lacking. Â In flavor and in content. Â I too ordered the Triple Shred- HUGE disappointment. Â Sounded great on paper, but when it arrived- it was tiny, with barely ANY meat in it. Â In hind sight, I think there may have been only pastrami in it, and at that, maybe 2 pieces. Â It was supposed to have corned beef AND brisket. It was also supposed to have saurkraut in it- if it was there it was unnoticeable. One would have expected a sandwich for $14 to be a thick, barely fit in your mouth sandwich. Â It was a joke. My husband ordered the Duck Poutine. Â It was listed under the plate section. Â We expected it to be a meal given that it was listed under that section. We expected large pieces of duck over the fries. It ended up being a plate of gravy fries. There was barely ANY duck meat in the gravy. Â Again, ridiculous. Â This plate should be listed under appetizers, as gravy fries, for a portion of the price, and then it would make sense.
Management: you have a great concept, there are no gastro pubs in the area, and people want to like your establishment. Make the food what it should be. Â Please!
decided to try it again. The waitress had a great attitude and super friendly.
The service was slow though. She mentioned she was waiting on the bartender to pour my flight of beers(10mins). At one point we thought they completely forgot about us.
The food was not the same as the last time we went.(the mac and cheese was made different) My girlfriend ordered the same sandwich as last time and it didnt have the same ingrediants.
I wont be back here for food. However I will visit this for a beer before or after dinner somewhere else
First off the place looks awesome! the ambiance is very cool, trendy, lots of detail in the decor. Â The food not so awesome. Â We went with a party of 6 people so we ordered alot to try. Â First off we ordered the fried garbanzo beans, what a waste of 5 bucks. Â They taste like a burnt piece of fried flour and they should of came with some type of dipping sauce, def not anyones favorite. Â We also ordered the poutine, which i have gotten at other places and is amazing. Â Came with duck breast a gravy and cheese. Â The duck was dry, they forgot to put the gravy on which is kind of the whole idea so we had to ask for them and the fries were just frozen fries you would get at a fast food joint. We ordered the mac and cheese which was ok, has i think rosemary on it which is a little different. Â We ordered the flat bread with filet migon and red peppers. Â again this was not anything to write home about. Â The filet was also kind of dry and didnt have much flavor all around. Â Then we ordered the big burger whichh feeds four people. This thing is huge! we cut it in fours and nobody finished it . Â
The pattie is almost not edible. Â Its just a big piece of beef in your mouth, you cant even eat the bread tomato and onion in one bite so its pointless in my mind. Â I can say nobody really enjoyed it except taking pictures of the thing and posting the biggest burger they have ever seen. Â It costs 24 bucks. Â Lastly we got dessert. some type of ice cream with toffee bits with a shot of baileys on it. Â It was ok, again def nothing to brag about, i almost didnt like the taste of alcohol with the ice cream, i wanted dessert not a shot of liquor. Â Probably wont ever go back again.
I am a local, living within a mile of this place, so I really want it to do well. But there are a few problems. I actually really like the vibe, and the staff has been very good on the two occasions I've been in. I have not experienced any of the behavior that others have posted about here, so maybe things have been improved by management in response to that. The beer is good, and all the employees seem to have knowledge enough to answer basic questions. Is it overpriced? Probably, yeah.
But the biggest problem is the food. Granted, I've only had a few things, but I am still shaking my head at what I got for the money I spent. As others have said, the menu sounds really good, but the reality is quite different. I orderd the Triple Shred, which was supposed to have pastrami, corned beef and brisket, with saurkraut and spicy mustard. What I got was a tiny roll with some pastrami. When I think of this kind of sandwhich, and over the course of my life I've had MANY, is that it should be piled high with meat. Not here. Maybe 3-4 ounces if that. Really, it was an outrageous insult to the notion of a meat sandwhich. Not a trace of kraut. But the absolute worst part- $14. Yep- I stupidly paid that amount of money. It gets a little worse. It did not come with fries. So I shellded out $6 for a basket of fries that was nothing short of totally ordinary. This place will fail if they do not handle the kitchen situation. I take no pleasure in saying that. What I am most suprised about as I write this is that there has been NO response from management on this site. Are they even listening?
Damn!!! I wanted so bad for this place To be good but.... NOPE.   3 tries like any fair person would do right?  Our $54 lunch for 2 consisted of olives, two salads, two beers and tea. The food was not good.  Sorry to complicate it but hey.... This is a Bizarre attempt at gastropub nosh.  The wedge salad dressing was gravy? It was awful. Over three visits weve tried 8 diffferent things, all were mediocre. The beer? "Sorry out of that"  Next beer? OMG rotten  bad keg? Oxidized? I don't know. Just flat out baaaad !  Next beer delirium was good : ).  Decent sellection but leaning to heavy on unproven locals and Odd imports. The Service? young pretentious staff.. (Btw/ young doesnt = pretentious, it just does here) The bartender was an annoying "one upper" know it all who needs a lesson in knowing it all.  Bottom line?  GOOD LUCK   Hope that 401k is solid  cause if you know food n beer, then steer clear. Cause fake it till you make it ain't gonna save it
Review Source:I wanted to go to this place once just to see what it was like (right across from TAPS fish house and brewery). Â I ordered the "Duck Fat Fries" and the "Mustache Burger" with a pint of Packinghouse Cream Stout. Â I was given my pint and was slowly sipping on it while I waited for my food. Â I asked for the fries to come out first before the burger and waited 20 minutes for it. Â The burger came another 20 minutes later. Â The fries did not really impress me, but they had a decent flavor. Â The burger had a horseradish cream sauce that had a lot of punch that I started sweating after a few bites. Â Service was so-so while waiting 40-45 minutes for a burger (I am normally patient especially if its busy, but I was the 5th person there).
Decor was decent, but simple and on the small side. Â They do have 30 beers on tap, plus they have a happy hour between 5-7 pm on select cocktails and appetizers too. Â I might go back, although I will try TAPS and Citrus City Grille nearby.
in Dos Lagos. Reasonable prices.
Very nice & clean place to have a easy drink or bring a group of friends.
They make a great effort to offer unique food items, as any gastropub should.
Large beer and cocktail selection.
The waiters are friendly and helpful.
greet apps and desserts. food is improving.
Only downside i'd have to say is that they are still working on the dinner items, but the server even told me they are making efforts to improve their dinner entrees.
its a great local place and is open late.
We moved out to Corona from Anaheim Hills and have missed the gastro pubs and non-chain establishments. We were excited when we heard about the Steam Haus. We decided to ditch the kid with grandma and have a night out starting here.
I was a little wary when we walked in at 7:00pm on a Friday night and it was pretty empty- maybe two other small parties. Â Everything from the bar to the candles on the table were steam punk inspired. A little is great, but I felt like Tim Burton and Disney got together to design a bar. But what the heck, why not try it out - who cares what it looks like if the food and beer are good.
We sat down to look at the menu and beer list and the waitress seemed a little peeved that we didn't know what we wanted from the bar 30 seconds after we got the list. They have an extensive list of beers from craft and micro brews- promising! Figured we'd try something new but wanted a tiny sip before ordering a full glass. ( Don't you hate when you try something new and are horribly disappointed when you're stuck with an entire glass of a beer you dont like?) We were notified that they have a new policy that any taste is $1 or we could order a flight for $4 for 4 tastes. We've NEVER been asked to pay for a sip of beer when we plan to order a few glasses.
That stacked with a small menu ( nothing looked that appetizing) and empty bar told us to pack up and get out before we were further disappointed.
Management: You're saving pennies but costing yourself dollars. We left and spent $70+ across the street at Taps.
Awesome atmosphere.....love the decor. The staff are great...always able to help with their wide range of alcohol choices. Food is super yummy. Duck fat fries....how can I say no? Only reason I say 5 stars instead of 4 is because they recently reduced the selection of on tap beers and the beers can be a bit pricey. But I think you really get what you pay for....good brews always cost a bit more
Review Source:Steam Haus collaborated with the Dos Lagos management office for a breakfast with Santa event last month. I've attended these breakfasts in previous years with much success. This year was quite the opposite. In the days leading up to the event at Steam Haus, the flyer indicated that I could purchase my tickets in advance. I entered into Steam Haus on Tuesday afternoon and inquired about purchasing tickets. The bartender had no clue. He asked the manager and she informed me that they do no sell tickets in advance nor do they take reservations for this event. They told me to walk over to the Dos Lagos management office. Once I got there, the receptionist informed me that Steam Haus should be selling tickets in advance or at least taking reservations. I gave up and decided just to show up on Saturday morning for the breakfast.
On Saturday morning, we showed up (2 adults, 2 children) and were immediately asked if we had tickets or reservations. The hostess was rude and condescending but allowed us entry. Once we were seated, the place was freezing. Our food took forever and cold. The fried chicken and waffles were bland and cold. The staff were bland and cold. This was so no worth the $15 per adult and $11 per child. Lame.
A friend arranged for five of us to meet here for a mini reunion as I'm visiting from New York. It's was a bit quiet at 7:30 pm when we arrived, and we were the only party there.
First, let's start off with the service. Ashley (or Ashlee, Ashleigh, Ashlie?) was fantastic. She knows her beer and provided  great recommendations when I told her I wanted on tap, and in the Belgian style. I also described the profile of the beers I usually enjoy and she recommended the Rince Cochon. Spot on! She clearly knew her stuff, and read me well.
While we labored over the extensive menu, she never showed signs of irritation, just upbeat nature, and helpful in her recommendations. When water ran low, she appeared (out of nowhere sometimes!) and refilled it with a smile. She checked back often enough to make sure we had all our needs met, but not so frequently where it became too intrusive. And at the end, she volunteered to split our checks. Seriously, she went way above and beyond what I call good service!
Second, let's talk food. If you're looking for standard fare, don't come here. Seriously, don't bother. There's a million other burger joints, fish taco joints, name-your-fusion joints...heck go to Yard House!
I really liked what I saw on the menu, from a shepherd's pie served in an acorn squash to "The Big Fancy," a grilled cheese with Fontina, Havarti, Bacon, and slices of Granny Smith Apple, I think there's a nice change from the usual chains spread across the suburbia of the IE.
I eventually selected (with the help of Ashley) on the AM burger, which was a burger sandwiched between two Belgian waffles. It had a raspberry onion jam and a fried egg in it as well. Again, a bit of a play on the burger, but not so radically differently. Lots of places adding fried egg now to burgers for those of us who appreciate it. Definitely inventive, and I enjoyed the richness of the caramelized onions with a slight tangy-ness from the raspberries (maybe from the framboise?). The slight tangy flavor cut through the richness of the waffles, bacon, and the burger. The butter lettuce provided a pleasant departure from the usual iceberg. I think it may have been interesting to use arugula, with it's peppery flavor providing more dimension to the burger. I liked it. Fresh, quality beef, with great produce.
We shared the bacon popcorn. More trendy than anything (I've seen bacon popcorn too many times now), but the bacon didn't overpower the popcorn. Further, it was surprisingly light despite having bacon all over it.
We did order the flat bread with gruyere, pears, and bsalmic reduction. I think the chef tried a little too hard buy soaking the pears in wine. I think fresh, crisp pears can stand on their own against the gruyere without being soaked in the wine. Also, the flat bread could've been more inviting by being baked longer in the oven.
Third, let's talk about beer selection. Lots of variety, and if you enjoy beer and don't want to haul out to Los Angeles, then this provides a good alternative. Fans of craft beer will like the options available. They even carry some of Dogfish Head's limited edition bottles!
Even on a quiet night like tonight, the kitchen needs to pick up the pace. Our group wanted to have a slow dinner (we ended up chatting for three hours) so the wait didn't bother us that much. But I can imagine a packed Friday night being quite problematic if the kitchen can't keep pace by turning out the food. Again, I go back to Ashley who kept us updated about the progress of the kitchen.
Finally, I find the prices reasonable. Main entrees ranged from $10-14, with the exception of their large burger that serves 4 at $24. WIth many gastropubs pushing toward the $20 range, Steam Haus is offering a reasonable price for their creations, recognizing their location. I want to come back to try their duck poutine. Sounds tasty, and who can say no to poutine?! Give this place a try if you're open minded about different combinations of flavors, and have some moments to spare while the kitchen sorts itself out.
Wow....I really wanted to like this place, as it is right next to  the movie theater and RA, one of my favorite sushi/tempura places during Happy Hour. Unfortunately, there are many issues here that they seem to not be addressing if you read the YELP reviews for the last few months.  It appears management/owner are just ignoring all that is being said about them.  In DENIAL?
.
I got there at 1:45 p.m. just in time for their $16 non-alcoholic brunch menu,  For that amount I got eggs Benedict, potatoes and a glass of orange juice. The eggs were overcooked, as was the ham underneath which was actually BLACK on some areas.  The potatoes with gravy were super yummy and the highlight of the meal.  At $9.95 it would be tolerable, but at $16 it is a jumbo rip-off.  If you think that is bad, how about $8 for a side of Mac 'N Cheese, or even worse:  $24 for a monster 1-pound burger!
I was greeted nicely by a young and friendly hostess who seated me with the menus. But after looking around and only seeing 2 other people in the entire place I knew I was looking at  a bear trap in the waiting.
Two more people came in and went to the bar, but by this time the hostess, and waiter/bar tender had gone into the kitchen for a gab fest, leaving the poor guys at the bar wondering what was going on and if they would ever get service. Â When they did come out, many of the beer choices they wanted were not available, further adding to their plight. At this time, the hostess left, leaving one guy to handle everything in the front of the house.....Hmmm.
I was thinking of going back again to try a few of their other food items, but after reading the other reviews here, I changed my mind in a hurry.  PLEASE bring back the high end burger place that used to be at this location.  Who wants to visit a place that is just so-so at best with inattentive staff and a cook  who appears not to know what he is doing and surely has no pride of presentation, as my Hollandaise sauce on my eggs was just slopped on and was spilling over the edge of the plate. Â
That tells me immediately there is NO quality control and no real caring by the chef, manager and waiter.....any of whom could have cleaned up my plate before serving it to me. Â And, what's with the super cheapo utensils that feel like they will collapse if pressed on too hard.....With the prices they are charging at this place, they surely can afford much better for the few customers who are coming in. Â There is NO reason any new place should ever have a 2 rating IF they have their act together.
Corona is not my usual scene but one night I decided to get outside of my urban element to my friend's hometown to hang out with some of her friends. We started off at Steam Haus and I was a little impressed that this gastropub went beyond the scope of Heineken and Bud Light. Â My nose was a little far up in the air with my pretentious "LA cool" but then I realized that the world doesn't evolve around la la land and that other cities are current to crafty beer too. Ain't that sumtin?
After I let go of my self-absorbed beer snobby ways, I ordered the same favorite beer I find tucked between the high-rises of downtown LA; a Triple Karmeliet. The bartender service was fast and friendly and, after we close out our tab, we sit down at one of the tables in the bar area and order a few light bites. I was already a little full and only tried the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto after my friend and her friends all complained about how "off" it tasted. I give it a try with an open mind and after the first bite my taste buds were thrown off by the combination of flavors and "off" soon turned into "awful". I find asparagus wrapped in prosciutto a simple dish and a little hard to screw up, but I have no idea what the chef was thinking. I want to say there was maybe a fusion balsamic drizzled onto the plate for added flavoring but whatever it was did not work. The prosciutto was tough and dry too. Â Simply put, it was nasty.
If I didn't try their food, I probably would have given this place a 4 stars for atmosphere and selection of beer in a suburban setting of a strip mall, but I must weigh in all factors knocking off a star for the quality of food.
After dining across the way at Taps one night, my friend and I decided to stop by Steam Haus to see if anything had changed or improved since my last visit in September. Around 8 pm on a Sunday, there were approximately 4 people in the restaurant. We walked in and a guy wearing a beanie who was sitting at a barstool facing towards the front door nodded his head and said "sup". I confusedly half-smiled and got a seat at the bar. Turns out that guy works there in some capacity and started talking loudly to the bartender about how we brushed him off before he could get us menus. It appears that this establishment has given up on the costumes (or uniforms of any kind). So when the bartender finally came up to us, after at least 10 minutes, I asked her for a draft list. Her response? "It'll be a few minutes." So we left.
I can't imagine coming back to Steam Haus. It really needs to get its act together. And really, any new restaurant needs to at least pretend to make customer service a priority. It makes the huge difference between having customers and having customers walk out after really strange, rude interactions with your poorly trained staff.
Started to get excited about a Gastropub in Corona....WTF... is it true. So a few nights ago take a drive and glance at the menu, it looks good. The staff super friendly, servers aren't really knowledgeable about beers but hey I know what I like to drink.
So we order the following and that's when the wheels fall off the cart:
Charturie plate, what a mess.. the smoked meat and duck looked like scrapes. The cheese was almost lost in the mess of meat. It was ugly to look at and tasted worse then that. I asked if they have any bread to serve with it, and the waiter looks at me like I'm crazy. Some stale rolls come but I know its going to be bad. Olives tasted mush. Next poutine fries, soggy, mushy, drenched and covered with a sloppy gravy.
The meatball appetizer, one large meatball with a terrible tomato sauce, the meatball was burned and in the middle filled with rice that was flavorless.
My suggestion is GET A CHEF, before you open a Gastropub and charge people to eat their.
We went here late at night for a friends birthday. They easily accomodated for us, and we were a large party of about 20. The service was great and the place had a really cool vibe...Although, It was pretty empty on a Saturday night.
Like the previous yelpers mentioned, the food here is a bit lacking. I got to try quite a few things off the menu, my favorite items probably being the poutine and the giant meatball. It is a bit pricier for a gastropub.
What wasn't so great was that a lot of the things on the menu were not available. No duck. No pulled pork. And that is what a lot of people were interested in getting from our party.
Although I didn't have a bad experience here per say, it just wasn't great. Maybe if they were better prepared with their food selection, I'd say it's a great place to go to hang out, especially if you have a big group.
Funny to see a Gastropub all the way out in Corona, in the sticks!
After golfing across the street at the crappy Dos Lagos, my friends and I wanted to grab a nice brewski. There were other restaurants in the shopping center that offered places to sit and drink but we wanted to try the new Steam Haus.
First of all, the service was cool. The place has a pretty cool vibe to it. The place was a bit pricey though. After looking over their Oktoberfest menu, I wanted to order from it. Unfortunately after consulting with the waitress, two of the items I wanted off the special menu were sold out. I went back to their traditional menu and order a couple of items off the list. I think I spent about $20-25 just for two items and a soda (one of the items was the Brussels Sprouts). Ouch.
Lots of parking, a lot of beers on tap and outdoor seating.
I was really looking forward to coming to this place because we need more culture and good food out here in the IE. Alas I was very disappointed by The Steam Haus Gastropub.
First, the staff. They were great. We were seated promptly and given a choice as to where to sit. Our waitress was great. My only complaint about the staff was the manager or owner? When he spotted my unhappiness with my dish (and I know he did) he choose to avoid asking me how it was, did I like it, nothing. "You smell something, Rabbit?" " *sniff *sniff, fear".
Beer. I just want to say that the beer selection is decent. However the drinks are very expensive. Because of my taste in beer (which tends to be on the pricier side) this wasn't altogether a shock. But here's the deal, if you claim to be a "gastropub" you need to add the alcohol percentage and the size serving 8oz, 12oz etc... to the beer menu. At least this will give craft beer drinkers a better idea of what they are paying such a ridiculous price for. Just a note, if you're a hop-head I think they have two IPA's. Enough about the beer.
The menu. It looks spectacular, however it's anything but. I feel like the owner purchased an expensive menu from a possibly good chef (I have no idea, just thinking out loud here) and either 1, he doesn't want to let it go because of the price he paid, or 2, took one look at how much the ingredients would be and choose to go with sub par ingredients, or 3, the chefs just have no idea how to execute it. Who knows, but the food was terrible in my opinion. I mean when the fries don't even come out well, geez there's an issue and I honestly don't have the time right now to rip into everything I ate, but I wouldn't have anything good to say. Did I mention that the menu is expensive as well? I couldn't even be mad I just had to be thankful that I don't have to eat it all and I just make it a point not to go back.
I feel like this place is trying to insert itself in the gourmet burger craft beer arena purely because of the trend right now. Unfortunately they are no where near executing this to the people who are consistently frequenting these types of establishments. I can always tell an imitator from true passion for good food and beer. They may get away with this for a while. Possibly for people just looking for something new in the Riverside/Corona area and have very bland meat and potato taste buds. However, without some changes you're not going to have the crowd that frequents these places though.
Good Luck, and BTW be open to peoples opinion.
My boyfriend and I Â were excited about the idea of a Steam Punk Themed restaurant and decided to give it a go this evening for an early dinner. Â Augh...
Even in with the warm weather, the place was like walking into a meat locker so we asked to sit on the patio. Â But the drunk girl sitting out there was so loud.and obnoxious we went inside. Â
My boyfriend was impressed with the beer selection, but we both struggled with the menu. Â We are both foodies, and I could not wrap my brain around some of the combinations of flavors they were trying to pile into one dish. Â Rather than not being able to decide because it all sounded good, it was "What looks the least like something I wont send back?"
A burger with a fried egg and some jam on a waffle just sounded gross. Â I settled for a flat-bread, which in actually wasn't bad. The boyfriend ordered the wedge salad. Â It was just odd and he hated it. Â I tasted it, and again the flavors were confusing, bacon, blue cheese, some kind of stewed tomato's and an overpowering vinaigrette type dressing.
I was more than surprised when I went to cut my food and a squeal came from the plate. Â PLASTIC... like the dollar store plastic plates... Are you kidding me?
The whole idea of Steam Punk is overkill. Â Lots of brass, moving parts, layers of everything tubes and pipes, copper and black. Â The funkier the better. There were a few pieces here and there but they were hidden on a back wall rather than showcased.Overall it was lacking in what one would expect for a Steam Punk theme restaurant. Â Probably the coolest thing was the Charlie Chaplin Movie showing on the big screen.
The potential is there, but the menu needs an overhaul, the prices need to come down and they need to get it right in the design area. Â I would have rather have walked over to Taps for a meal that I know would have been good.
Unless the menu changes we will not be returning. That's too bad, I like to see new business become successful.
I'm giving them a 2 because its only been open one month. Place looks great but thats about the only positive. Beer is way over priced for what you get. $7 for a 12 oz glass of sculpin, not even a full pint. They have a lot of taps but half of them are blown. It was a smaller list for the waitress to list the beers they ACTUALLY had available. Food is ok. Eating the pulled pork sandwich, doesn't have much flavor. Hopefully with time this place will improve. Until then, I recommend going to Taps across the street.
Review Source:I was so excited to hear that an independent restaurant/bar was coming back to Dos Lagos because it is much needed. FAIL! The last thing the area needs is a high priced place serving dishes nobody wants. I hope this place makes some changes fast (based on the other reviews I'm reading here) or there will be a leasing sign up in the window once again.
Review Source:Came here Saturday at about 7:30, used to be Alibi a while back. Has on old 20's thing going on which is unique, not something you see in Corona. The decor was nice and they had Charlie Chaplin movies on the big screen. The music also went along with the 20's theme. It would have been nice if they changed the music up to something a little more modern as it got later into the evening. The patio area and the front windows that rolls up are pretty cool.
They have a pretty large selection of beers on tap as well as 100 different bottled beers, or at least that's what we were told. But they didn't have hanger 24 so they offered something else that was similar. Its fun to try new beers and the staff seems to be pretty knowledgeable. We had the Mustache Mushroom burger medium rare, Duck Fat fries and tried some of the Comfort Food (which was a grilled cheese sandwich with egg in side nd tomato bisque soup. That was really good, so good tried to make some the next day for breakfast. The Mustache Mushroom burger was good, juicy and cooked well, but it wasn't hot, more like warm ehhhh I hate that. It did come with horseradish sauce which I love. The duck fat fries were okay, not great, it came with curry ketchup which was interesting, but again not great and ranch. Mushtache Burger, Duck Fat Fries, two Hanger 24 like beers, one triple camelite, one augustine, and one Chimay for $48.00. Not bad.
The girl bartenders were very sweet and friendly and checked on us often. The place was pretty empty for a Saturday night, when we first got there there was maybe only one other table  in there. by the time we left there were maybe 5 tables still not nearly as busy as it should be. It is pricier than some of the other restaurants in the area but not outrageous.
I want to say it's comparable to some of the bars in Claremont Village, back abbey and union on Yale. Nice place for mid twenties to thirties crowd. And the 20's theme will probably keep the bros out which is nice. This place definitely has potential; I think it would do better if the Happy Hour specials were better and change the music on the weekend evenings.
BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Â My husband and I are big fans of gastropubs. Â We have been to many and have always thought we were dying for a good one in Corona. Â This placed failed to impress in so many ways. Â The waitressing staff was nice enough but I felt the whole experience was just very confusing. Â I really like the Steam Punk vibe but the decor although nice enough for some reason was lacking. Â I felt the lighting they chose from warm yellows behind the bar to bright blues in the dining area just did not mix and I was confused at what atmosphere they were creating. Â On top of that, the music selection was HORRIBLE. Â It was a sad mix of 1990's to early 2000's slow songs with a few classics here and there. Â Immediately the music gave the dining experience a BUZZ KILL (which sucks when you are feeling pumped to try potentially good food and beer). Â I spent the rest of the dining experience wishing I could hit SKIP button on the tracks playing. Â On yelp it lists this place as an attraction for hipsters, but with this music selection, it's more for the retirement community across the street. Â
Next beer and wine. Â VERY overpriced. Â My husband ordered a beer that we thought was going to be served in a regular 12oz glass for $8, but then they brought out this small 8 oz glass of beer we were immediately turned off. Â Ridiculous! Â They first need to list the glass sizes on the beer menu with prices along with alchohol content next to the craft beer. Â Anyone who has been to a successful gastropub serving craft beer will know this is an important detail to list. Â To get a small glass of beer for $8, I find is a rip off. Â Yard House is a bit overpriced but at least you get a decent size glass for the price you pay. Â My wine was good considering I bought the cheapest Merlot for $6. Â The rest jumped up to $8 plus. Â
I did like that when my Dad's beer was out of stock, they brought out 2 samples glasses of beer for him to try. Â
Finally Food. Â Thank goodness we ordered from the cheaper snacks menu offered after 9pm. Â I would have felt even worse after the meal knowing we blew a huge wad of money on crap food. Â Once again I was very confused on what the chef/owner was trying to achieve with the ingredients of each dish. Â I ordered the Poutine with the duck confit, duck gravy and fontina cheese. Â The fries were SO soggy and it was as if someone microwaved canned soup and dumped it on the fries with some mild cheese. Â I couldn't taste the duck flavor in the gravy and found it very salty. Â I also got the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. Â Sounds delicious right? NO TERRIBLE. Â The asparagus was cold and string. Â The prosciutto was dry and there was this terrible sweet dark sauced drizzled all over the asparagus and prosciutto that did not blend with the flavors at all. Â The farm frites with curry ketchup was another dish that they screwed up on. Â The fries were extremely hard and dry and the parmeson cheese melted over the top was dry and almost crusty. Â TERRIBLE. Â The only thing good was the ketchup with curry. Â My dad got the goat cheese and grilled onions wrapped in prosciutto which was not bad but I am not a big fan of goat cheese. Â My husband got the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. Â The pork was dry with poor flavoring. Â The slaw was OK. Â Nothing to write home about. Â The owner came out and saw our expressions of dislike and ignored us for feedback heading straight to the table next to us. Â I was disappointed that he didn't care to see what his customers are wanting whether it will be good feedback or bad. Â He didn't bother to see if there was anything else he could offer to make our dining experience better. Â
We are not rude or obnoxious people. Â We tend to be very gratious and complimentative. Â So I internalized my disgust of this experience for Yelp. Â Early in my dining experience when I knew it was going south, I thought OK maybe I will try this place again in 6 months and see if they work out their kinks but by the end of the dining experience my opinion changed and I now have decided I will NOT be coming back. Â How do you think you can compete with the prices of Taps across the street with dried bland food on plates & overpriced beer in sippy cup sizes? Â I'm saving my well deserved dining experiences for The Salted Pig, Yard House, and Slater's 50/50. Â No one wants to waste $50-150 of hard earned money on an experience they completely regret and I regret coming here tonight.
Ok, I want to like this place. Â I really do. Â The area is in need of a creative and fun gastro pub with great food and wine. Â But alas, this place has a long way to go to get there.
The pros:
- staff is friendly, albeit a little in need of training...but they are new so cut 'em a break
- the ambience is charming and comfortable
- the beer list is extensive
The cons:
- pricing!!! This place is not a great value. Â The beer is a short 12 oz pour for a premium pint price. Wine is $9 for about a 4 oz pour.
- the food....oh where do I begin? Bland...poor quality...poorly executed!!! Whoever wrote their menu is a marketing genius because it sounds fabulous on paper.  Unfortunately it just doesn't live up to the description. The "s'mores" dessert was described as a dark chocolate cake with Irish butter toffee layer and brûlée marshmallow top.  It was a microwaved, store bought brownie still cold in the middle with some Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and melted marshmallow on top. Gross!
To the owner of this place...if you are reading this, please know that I desperately want you to succeed! Step up your game and bring me back for more! I promise I'll be loyal if you do! Â Otherwise, you lost me at hello.
This place was all bad, we went and didn't even finish our food.
The bartender was nice, but awkward.
The plates they served our food in were cheap, the silverware looked old, and the decor was great... I was confused.
My flat bread wasn't a flat bread, it tasted like a microwaved pizza man.
The food was bad, you guys should really taste your food before serving it out to customers... Go have dinner at the Salted Pig over in Riverside, and see what a gastropub is really like..
Also adding "gastropub" to your restaurant is a tease.. its promising something that's just not there.
The location is great and the decor is really nice, but it doesn't make up for any of my complaints. Quality food and beer is a must at gastropubs.
I agree with many reviews. Ridiculous prices for food and beer. Since other yelpers already pointed out all the things wrong with this place, I'm going to point out just a few quirky things that didn't sit right with me.
1. The decor for me is very agreeable and nice. I love steam punk settings, and I applaud any bar that will put forth the effort of decorum beyond cheesy sports bar. So it didn't make any sense to me why they have two tvs above the bar on ESPN. If youre not trying to be a sports bar, don't put football on your tv screens. Have the balls to put something on your tvs that represents the atmosphere.
2. Alright I get it. You want to charge $8 for a pint of beer because your beer is just solo craft and amazing. Why the fuck then do you have PBR on tap and want to charge $5 for it? Why charge $5 for s bottle of Coors? That shit shouldn't even be on the menu, and the fact you want to charge it as if its a top shelf beer is a load of shit.
3. Again, for a steam punk bar, atmosphere is important. Why then is then does your music seem to be set on all the songs of the 80s I didn't want to remember?
So dear streamhaus, why don't you take a risk and become the bar you could be? Improve you dining menu, diversify the prices on your beer, and take a risk on having the kind of character you want.
And for the record, we ordered the pork chops, AM burger, and mac and cheese. All items were not worth their top dollar. Pork chops were dry and tasted overly of charcoal. Mac n cheese was okay but I'm happy I got it off the cheap bites menu.
Service was excellent-- they never stopped smiling and were fast but polite, engaged in conversation when we spoke up.
Draft and bottle list is excellent for those looking to expand their craft experience, but may be de rigeur for the Cicerone. The prices are a bit high for draft too.
The food was PHENOMENAL. The poutine was perfect, the smoked onion soup was so smoky, the pulled pork sandwich is spicier than advertised, and the Big Fancy sets a serious precedent for grilled cheese sandwiches.
The atmosphere is missing one point-- the music. For a Steampunk restaurant to be playing Eric Clapton, Kenny G and Elton John is more than a little jarring.
I'd love to come back here sometime.
Confession: I love Gastropubs. Good food, and (more importantly) good beer make the perfect meal.
Although as of this writing they are less than two weeks old, I have already heard quite a buzz about this "steampunk" themed restaurant. Lack of culinary knowledge among the servers, high prices, inconsistent food, etc. There is definitely a certain learning curve for a new restaurant however, and was determined to see for myself what this gastropunk was all about.
Located directly across from what I can only assume will be its' toughest competitor, TAPS Fishhouse and Brewery, Steam Haus is a tiny little gastropub with a unique Victorian theme. My guest and I arrived midday on a Sunday and the place was empty sans a few bar patrons. We were seated at a high table and began dissecting the menu.
-BEER-
The draft list appears evenly split between Belgian/American brews and is quite sufficient. Highlights include BP Sculpin, DFH 90 minute, Triple Karmeliet, Petrus, Gulden Draak, and Delirium Tremens. Extremely solid, especially for being so new. The bottle list was satisfactory, but somewhat boring. I was hoping for at least a few high end or hard to get seasonal bottles in which to split, but there simply was nothing.
-BEER PRICES-
The draft list prices were frankly highway robbery. $7 for (at best) an 11 ounce pour of Sculpin is ridiculous. Sculpin is widely available, cheap, and most of all a basic American IPA; the glass in which it was served made no sense. The same is true for Gulden Draak and Downtown Brown. The prices for bottled beers are a much better deal. 22oz Lost Abbey brews for $11. This is the one gastropub where it is cheaper to drink OFF tap.
-BEER Knowledge--
Our server, although friendly, simply didn't understand the beers she was serving. After struggling to take our order, she brought out the beers and then placed the wrong beer in front of me, and a beer we didn't order in front of my guest. For our second round we ordered a "bottled" beer, but the bartender must have poured the beer behind the bar into a glass, because our server came out with two glasses of full beer and no bottle. The whole situation seemed a bit shady. Please ALWAYS pour your bottle at the table.
-FOOD-
The menu at Steam Haus is printed on EXTREMELY large pieces of brown paper. I found this quite distracting. It also is littered with typos and strange capitalization. We ordered the following items.
-Brussel Sprouts- In my opinion, along with Mac and Cheese, the backbone of a gastropub. These fell way way short of satisfactory. They were inedible and remained untouched throughout our meal. Dry, tasteless, and with "prosciutto" added (although I believe it was simply bacon or pancetta...) these were the biggest disappointment of the day. Â Â
-Comfort Food- A simple dish of a grilled cheese +fried egg and a tomato bisque. The soup was served accidentally lukewarm, but the grilled cheese was fantastic. Would absolutely order this again.
-Meatball- We were really learning towards ordering a burger, but after learning the burgers do NOT come with fries (in fact they come with no side of any sort, for $14, and look ridiculous on a large plate accompanied by nothing), we decided upon the meatball entree. The meatball itself was pretty tasty, until you got to the cold block of cheese in the middle.
-Coffee and Donuts (dessert)--This appears to be a blatant ripoff of a dessert at a similar local gastropub. The coffee ice creams is fantastic, but they do not make the ice cream in-house (they get it from the creamery next door). The (3) donuts are simply basic powdered glazed donuts and forgettable. Still, I'd pay $5 for the ice cream.
What intrigues me about the menu at Steam Haus is the changes they have already made in less than two weeks. A friend of mine ordered the Pork Chop for $28 a few days before I went in. The Pork Chop on our menu was only $22. This gives me hope they realize how ridiculous their prices are, especially with TAPS next door.
Although this dining experience was far from perfect, I would definitely consider revisiting after a few months. I understand training a new staff and finding your concept takes time.
If you are in Dos Lagos I recommend you at least stop by for a beer and the decor. Steam Haus is new, unique, and visually stunning. It could be worse; it could be another Applebees.
Went day after grand opening.
Beer is overpriced. You can get  a much better deal at Taps across the way. I packed grapes and a cup of water for my toddler to snack on while we waited for her food. I got charged $2 for "open food" even though I bought a kids meal for her there. That made no sense to me! Most parents pack snacks for their kids to munch on so they can patiently wait and not disturb other clients. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich ($10). I once made one similar to it (got recipe on Pinterest) and it tasted way better. Wait staff is young and lacking in personality. I had such high hopes for this place. Hopefully they'll read reviews and make some changes.
This place has a lot of potential. Â I especially like their diverse tap list. Â However, they have to get their prices in line or they are not going to last. Â I had a burger (it came with no side) and two beers. Â My tab was $35 including tip. Â Also, the second beer, Rogue Hazelnut, came in a 12 ounce glass not a pint. Â That is crazy for $7.
If you want to go and have a couple of outstanding beers, fine. Â But, these guys are not going to last in Corona with these prices. Â Cool decor and good menu.
Let me start by saying that I get really excited whenever a new place offers great beers on tap--and Steam Haus definitely does: Sculpin, Ruination, seasonal brews, etc. Their beer selection is top notch. I want to support that trend.
However, beer alone does not a gastropub make. You've got to nail the dishes, too. And while it's possible that I went there on a bad night or the staff is still working out the kinks--the restaurant has only been open for a week or so--I was very disappointed by our appetizer of "poutine" frites. The fries were thick, soft uniform things that tasted like they'd come out of a frozen Ore-Ida bag. And the "poutine" gravy, which the menu claims is made of duck fat and duck confit, tasted like reduced Campbell's chicken soup. If I'd paid $5 for the fries, I would've been happy; but for $10 I felt jipped.
The steam punk atmosphere is fresh and cool and also worthy of support. I really dug the old silent movies projected on an overhead screen, and the costumes are fun. But that ambiance falls apart when the bartender turns out to be a stereotypical SoCal bro, who, from the sound of him, doesn't even like craft beers. Then throw on some really loud, really aggressive early-2000s pop punk.... Cognitive dissonance ensues. I suspect that true steam punk fans will be disappointed.
Again, I love that Steam Haus is doing something original with the gastropub style, and their beer selection is very nice. Maybe next time I'll try something else on their menu, but based on the fries alone, I didn't want to hazard the dinner options.
A little different thematically since it tries to capture the feel of a Steampunk pub. Unfortunately it doesn't differ much from the original tenant of this mall spot.
The food and drinks are overpriced. Expect to pay around $8 for less than a pint of beer.
Tried the Duck Fat fries and found them very disappointing, soggy and tasteless; I've had much better.
Also had a couple of pita bread pizzas which were ok...but $10 to $12 for flat bread with toppings?
By the time all was said and done, I paid over $60 for 3 beers, two pita bread pizzas, two orders of fries.
I'll try it again once it's settled in...but for the prices, I'll go to the Salted Pig in DT Riverside instead.
I very much wanted to like this place and don't mind paying well for unique gastronomic experiences; alas I left disappointed.
Nice place.... but the prices are insane crazy STUPID high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything is overpriced - by like 1000%! I aint kidding. Great atmosphere, decent food, very nice people... but the prices are ludicrous. I will probably be back from time to time, but not nearly as often as we were planning. Hopefully other Steampunk themed places will open with a less greedy owner.
