Before you think I give everything rave reviews, I don't. It's been a few weeks since we popped in here for lunch while Mom was visiting. (MIzuna wasn't open yet and due to hunger factor we agreed the menu had something for everyone so let's eat!)

Service was friendly, pretty right on, and only lacking once the place began to fill up with customers. I was surprised that it was seat yourself.

What I will say is that I think the food is good, even tasty but it just depends on what you order. The smoked salmon appetizer plate was nicely done with crostinis and cream cheese but the fried calamari (steak cut into slices) was chewy and over cooked. One good one and meh for the appetizers.

My blue moon beer was served cold and enjoyed it. My fish tacos were sad. The fish (halibut I believe) was tasty and good, but the rest of the tacos need a make-over. Flour tortillas, heavy and need to be corn. Too much lettuce, Americanized salsa (Pace from a jar taste), cheddar cheese,  it all just added up to blah. I ate the fish and basically ate the like a salad after brushing the bland salsa aside. Bring on some fresh salsa, onions, and cilantro with lime and crema and it would be much better. Trust me. But, Mom had the Chipolte Chicken sandwich which was nice and spicy and really good. The ciabatta bread was fresh and hearty. My girl ordered some sort of Pesto Chicken baked sandwich and it looked wonderful. Big and filling, she took half home. One bite and I agreed it was amazing and loved the stuffed bread, baked in the oven idea. Both sandwich came with string cut fries that none of us could stop eating. Loved the fries and I rarely say this about any french fry ever.

Overall it was a good experience, just have to ask more questions about what you order if you like your food with a bit of flair!

Get the Smoked Steelhead appetizer! Yummy! I'm not sure what is with some of the negative reviews. I've been several times and have had only excellent service and great food. The hubby enjoys the large whiskey/bourbon selection. And they have a really good happy hour.

My girlfriend and I went to the steelhead bar and Grill on Sat the 15th of June.  Walking in we LOVED the look and feel. Atmosphere was great.  Menu was good.  Wait for it. Here's the ugly.  We sat for a solid 15 min without being greeted by our server.  Infact another server walked past us several times before saying your server will be by shortly.  It was past 10pm. And the place was NOT busy! Finally or server arrived with water.my girlfriend instantly ordered a drink & appetizer which we waited FOREVER for.  Actually watched it sit made at the service well. While our server chatted with who appeared to be a manager counting money behind the bar. We got our appetizer before the drink. When I tried to order the spirit sampler they were out of the 1st 3 I wanted so I had to pick different ones and wait another 10+min.  As our server hung out we watched server after server walk past the prepared sampler.  Before our server yelled across the rail for someone else to drop It off. We gave that server our dinner order. Which was prepared by a man without a hair net. (Gross) the food was good. When we asked for refills on water we waited and got it from a server walking by. We sat and watched while we ate. Saw a drunk employee go behind the bar. Watched employees walk straight from working sit at the rail and order drinks. Including the lady who appeared to be manager. Pretty tacky & unprofessional to say the least.  My girlfriend ordered 1 more drink  the Kootenai Kazi. Tasted like Kool aid with way too much sugar.  Asked for our tab and tipped the server that  continually walked past helping us here and there. The only reason we are giving this place 2 Stars is the food. Service was the worst ever!  Sad part is the food was so good she wanted to go back sun. But changed her mind age she reminisced about the HORRIBLE service! We both work in the industry.  I bartend and she serves.  We know how this stuff goes. And there was no excuse for how pathetic this place was! I wouldn't recommend It!

I gave steelhead another try and was blown away by the difference in service i received. The food was just as good, nice and consistent, the service was well above what i received last time.  Actually, some of the best I've had. Looking forward to a third visit.

Steelhead has a really nice atmosphere with food to match. It is kinda like a high end bar atmosphere that happens to have some of the nicer mid priced food in town. I would recommend for almost anyone unless you are looking for a more intimate atmosphere. It can get crowded and loud.

The bourbon selection is the best place in town! Actually, it might be the only place in town that offers tastings.

I'm confused about the earlier posting on champagne and fish.....

Great burgers and the ahi appetizer is delicious!!

PS - If you stop by, go next door and visit Atticus

Truly one of my WORST dinners ever.  I ordered the champagne which was $22.00 fair price for a real piece of fish. What I got was a TV dinner style dish with zero flavor and truly tasted like a frozen dinner. The decor is nice so if you wanna have a drink its probably a good atmosphere but that's all. Service is mediocre not personable at all.

If there was a such thing as no stars this place would get a no star rating.

I will never dine here again.

Although it may seem very trendy at first, this place is excellent.  The beverage selection is great and the food is delicious.  Great ambience and service.  It will be a place a visit every time I am in Spokane.

Too expensive for what you get. Good place for the office lunch meeting I guess. Don't get the grilled cheese with the lobster. It sounded good, but had a fishy taste that tells me the lobster wasn't very fresh. I would give it one star but the service was good.

Mediocre at best. Went here with a friend for dinner a few nights ago. The service was ok but could have definitely  been better. Food for the price was underrated. I think happy hour would be ok here bc you'll probably get the value for your $, but I won't be back for dinner.  The atmosphere is cool! However the service and food unfortunately overshadowed it.

Meh describes it exactly.  Not bad, just not anything special.  My wife and I went for a rare dinner date, so my expectations were probably too high.  Service was lackluster.  Food was decidedly average.  Atmosphere was nice enough.  Would be an ok place to meet for beers or watch a game.  I had the French Dip Sandwhich, was was surprisingly bad.  My wife had the Ahi Seared Tuna, which she said was pretty good.

For Munchies & Drinks You Can't Beat This In Spokane

    SITREP

Was spending a couple days in Spokane while traveling through the Pacific Northwest (while cutting WIDE arcs & swaths through highways leading me around Portland, the Tri-Cites, Walla Walla and up to Spokane before hitting Coeur d'Alene).  Along the way, I found the yummy treasure.

    SETUP

My sweet friend and I wanted some MUNCHIES.  Grubbish yummies with no fuss, no muss.  What we got was a selection of appetizers that included:

    *  THE NACHO PLATE - many colored crunchy chips loaded with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, some veggies, sour cream and guac.  YUM.

    *  SMOKED SALMON ARTICHOKE DIP - Absolutely incredible - included the sautéed artichoke hearts with fresh spinach, smoked salmon, French bread, and MORE colored chips!

We put out the FIRE caused by the foods' spiciness by downing some Coors Lites.

    THE LOWDOWN

All in all, a great food stop for some delectable munchies and refreshing beer.

I ate at this establishment on Saturday and was less than impressed.

It took a lot of trying to wave down the waiter to order once I was seated. That should not have happened even though the attentiveness of the waiter improved once our food arrived.

The Calamari appetizer was bland. Obviously not fresh either but frozen and then cooked. The halibut sandwich I had was bland as well and the mayonnaise type sauce foul tasting. The only good part of my meal was the fries.

It was very over-priced for quality it was and it actually gave me indigestion. I only give this place two stars because the person I was with loved the food here and had no complaints.

I will not be going back here.

I was looking for a place to watch some NFL, and this place comes up very high in a search for a sports bar. Beware that it is not. It's more of a "bar and grill," which is fine most of time, but there are only a few TVs, they're pretty small and the sound is off. In other words, TVs as atmosphere rather than as the focal point.

Otherwise, it is a pretty space, and packed on a random Sunday night? Happy hour on a Sunday was an unexpected treat. The $3 beer choices were bland and poor, but the $6 food was better with good portion sizes, and it came out very quickly. Nachos were great. The blue cheese fries were good, but I prefer steak fries to the thin shoe strings. Salmon artichoke jalapeño dip was nicely presented, but seemed to be about 85% cream cheese, which was disappointing.

Good service. Stick with the non-happy hour beers and you'll do OK.

Happy hour was good and the seared ahi was very good off the starter menu. Will go back.

I went here during Pig Out with my parents, husband, and visiting former-exchange student. The drinks were great, the waitress was alright (nothing to talk up) and the food was really boring I thought. My husband had a burger and I had a sandwhich... lol I dont even remember what it was! I just remember thinking it was kind of a waste of money to go there for anything other than drinks, because there was no passion in the food. If I can make better at home, then why would I go out? I liked the outdoor seating, it was cute...but other than that... I am not going to go around recommending it to people.

Came here last week with friends for a bite. Enjoyed the $8 whiskey/bourbon flights and the happy hour menu (I had the seared ahi which was tasty, well-prepared, and well-presented). Service was excellent and attentive -- our server even told us that she was going off shift, and her replacement was equally friendly and helpful. Nice atmosphere with lots of professional-types. Would definitely return.

I really enjoyed this place. Their happy hour is awesome (though just on a few beers) but $6 appetizers is great! My wife and I had the blue cheese fries, seared ahi, and smoked steelhead appetizers. All were great! We will certainly be back!

Hadn't heard of this place but will likely make it a point to go back here when I visit Spokane. Has a great, casual vibe and the food was fantastic. I had a small salad and the teriyaki steak bites. Both were soo good! The service here was pretty standard and they had a decent selection of draft beers on special for their Sunday happy hour. A nice alternative to the chain restaurants downtown. Easily accessible if you park in the parking garage.

Review date 7-13  The sirloin steak was excellent as were the sides.  Others in my party had mahi mahi and chicken.  The atmosphere is nice, the servers are nice and this place is a great place to go while in Spokane.  If you find yourself here, go for it.  The food is good and of the 5 times I have been here, I have never been disappointed.

CLEANLINESS: Table wasnt wiped down and a previous bill was left on table when we sat down, but besides that the place seemed pretty clean.
HOTTIE: Sorry no hottie report. I did see one or two walk by the huge from window looking out to the street.
AMENITIES: For a bar and grille i didnt see alot of TVs, but they are in there. Stool table, regular table seating, and bar seating is available.
MEAL: For being a bar you'd think theyd have a good beer variety. This obviously wasnt the case, so i had myself a mojito and ate the seared ahi which tasted delicious.
    PRICE: 25.00 plus tip
SERVICE: Our waitress wasnt the best, but then again ive experienced worse.
DECOR: Pretty nice layout, wood tables wood floor with a decently large bar. Probably wouldnt be a bad time for a late night drink.
    DRESS CODE: None

Food is good but the service isn't great.

I'm going to revise my review a bit.  First the food is really excellent.  It's in a great location and the place has a great feel to it.  Now the one and only reason I didn't give it 4 stars or better is the service.  Basically its inconsistent.  My first time there the place was packed but service was ok.  The next time it was a normal weekday evening but the service was poor.  We ordered nachos as appetizers and they took 30 minutes for the first plate to arrive.  The second arrived 10 minutes later.

Take out the slow service and this place is wonderful.  It's all reasonably priced and tastes great.  Highly recommend the Kahlua Cake for dessert.

I just happened to walk by here the other day and the smell of their food pulled me in. I was very happy with it. The decor is really cool. Exposed brick, fireplace, high loft like ceilings and a really cool bar.
The menu had so many things that sounded amazing. I had a hard time choosing. I guess I'll definitely be back to try other dishes.
I had the black and blue burger. It was amazing. I love blue cheese and if you do to, get it. It was nice and juicy. The burger was seasoned really well. And I liked the shoe string fries I got with it.
Our waiter was really nice and very attentive. I was happy with the service.
This is a great place to go for a chill lunch.

One of the best restaurants I have been to in Spokane. Nice atmosphere, the food tasted amazing for the price that I paid for ($12 for Linguine with chicken), and a variety of beer selection. Great place to go for a dinner or for couple of drinks.

However, parking is a little bit inconvenient because you do have to find street parking.

Older crowd in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, $8 drinks, a good place to go if you want to walk down the alley to a place NOT overrun with 21 year olds drinking a big green monster at O'Dougherties. Good atmosphere, 90s music.

This place is awesome! After a walk to downtown along the trail we decided to stop in and get some grub and drinks. We chose this place because of the promising menu posted in the window. The atmosphere was nice, and they had football playing on tv (to thumbs up). The waitress was friendly and fast. I had the black & bleu burger and my oh my, that was delicious! My girlfriend had the smoked salmon artichoke dip and that was good, too. To drink I had the Dogzilla black IPA and a Kootenai-kazi which was huckleberry. She had the huckleberry margarita. It was all very very good, and we will be going back again.

It's downtown right across from the park.  I love when restaurants post their menu outside the door so I can see their food and prices before I commit!  The prices were a little high, but the place looked pretty trendy and nice inside and the apps were relatively reasonably priced.

The drink menu was. . .  Awesome!  LOTS of libations, and all of them with a little twist on the original.  I want to go back just to try many, many varieties.  Also, bonus point for margarita Mondays ALL day on Monday priced just $3.33.  I love a deal--especially when there's no time-limit (I'm terrible at missing happy hours by just an hour).

My smoked salmon artichoke dip was amazing.  Truly fantastic, with cream cheese, chokes, smoked salmon, cheese, and a hint of jalapeno for spiciness.  And it came with bread AND chips, and for the appetizer price it was quite a big serving.  Almost more than I could eat.  Almost.

Our waitress was friendly and fast, and the interior was fancy.  I will be going back--for the appetizer and as many of those drinks as I can imbibe on.

I was visiting from out of town and had some co workers recommend Steelhead. Since it was close to my hotel in Downtown, I decided to have dinner there.

I ordered the Sesame Encrusted Tuna and to my surprise, it was very delicious. I wasn't sure what to expect since it definitely wasn't an "Asian" restaurant. I finished the whole plate!

I also ordered the strawberry Mojito and that was very yummy as well.  I was already tipsy halfway into my drink.

Service was great. My server was very attentive and nice. I was also able to get a table outside which was a bonus on a nice day.

I've been to the Steelhead three times now, and every time I've been disappointed. I have had the cobb salad, the brewster chicken sandwich and a steak. Each meal has been mediocre, at best, and definitely overpriced.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, but I have yet to have great service. One time my friend and I sat for 15 minutes before we even received water or menus. We actually pulled another waitress off one of her tables to serve us. She did a great job, but the fact that the guy who was supposed to be our waiter couldn't find the time to even bring us a menu was pretty awful.

I've also ordered some of their house drinks and been disappointed in the ratio of mix to liquor. When I'm paying $8 or $9 for a drink, I expect that the alcohol match that price. The lemon drop was overly sweet, and obviously contained bottled lemon juice in favor of fresh squeezed.

Overall, I think this place is fine if you're desperate, but I would suggest walking another block and stopping by O'Doherty's instead. It's cheaper and the food is about the same in taste, but less in price.

You must first know that I don't hand out four- or five-star reviews frivolously. I don't believe that just because I had a decent time somewhere and got decent service I should give a joint a virtual reach-around.

    It just isn't in me.

The Steelhead, however, gave us an *exceptional* experience, start to finish.

We were pleasantly greeted when we walked in the door and told to please seat ourselves. Our server was prompt in attending to us and happily recited the flavoured vodka selection for me. Anywhere else and some ditz is telling me we have, like, raspberry and stuuuuff.

We started with the teriyaki steak bites, a solid appetizer. The steak bites were medium rare to perfection and lightly coated in teriyaki sauce. It wasn't too heavy by any measure as some teriyaki bites can be.

I ordered the pesto chicken kebabs while my date had the steak. The kebabs were delightful, served with grilled veggies and rice pilaf. My date's steak was overdone to medium but our server handled the error wonderfully.

When the new steak arrived, he took the old one and said he would have a chat with the kitchen staff. I watched as he first took it over to the other servers to teach them the difference between steak doneness.

If he's a head server or manager of any kind, I thought he did a terrific job in guiding the younger staff and handling the kitchen error.

We capped our evening off by splitting the Kahlua Mousse Pie and wowee. It was fantastic. And I'm quite sure it wasn't an even split, given my addiction to gooey sweet cake.

I have found few places thus far in Spokane that would be receiving repeat business. The Steelhead is one of them.

We went for dinner for a friend's birthday, grabbed a table by the bar and had servers buzzing around, making sure everything was perfect all night.

The food was great, we shared the bleu cheese fries, which were more like 'frites' in their size and crispness, and the pile of cheese and bacon on top was generous to say the least. We were all completely in love with them.

I got the Whiskey Sauce Top Sirloin, which was GIANT and delicious, cooked perfectly and served with real and delish mashed taters and steamed veggies.  For $15, this was a STEAL!

    My cohorts ordered:

The special- blackened pork medallions with an orange marmalade sauce- the taste and sauce were great but something in the blackening process made the pork a bit tough.

Another fish special- which he said was fantastic, although he didn't talk much as eat so I believe this was very true.

The Philly- it was GIGANTIC, a split loaf of french bread with the sandwich filling sort of slid in the middle, it was almost too big to eat and came with the same fries from the appetizer (sans bleu cheese) but just as good.

We ordered a few drinks- at $7 for a specialty martini- and it was a great meal at really reasonable prices.

I wouldn't support this place as long as Greg is the manager.

I've heard rumors that they mistreat their employees and have recently fired a solid bartender.

Somehow jerks always end up in charge.

****I was just informed that a new management team is in place. The coast is clear*****

This place is great.  The happy hour specials are great and are very generously proportioned.  I will say that sometimes the wait staff seems a little overworked and so things go a little slow.  But if you are looking for a place to grab a drink and an appetizer this is the place.

On a side note their Blue Cheese Iceberg wedge is awesome.

Am I missing something here guys?

FULL DISCLOSURE:  I came here for the first time when I had just moved to Spokane.  My mom and 18 y/o brother were visiting, it was after 9pm on a weekday and we were trying to find somewhere to eat.  (this is an insane challenge in Spokane, BELIEVE ME).  Anyway, we finally happened upon Steelhead, got seated, and the waiter asked my brother for his ID....Umm...what?  Washington drinking laws are odd and overly restrictive.  No minors are allowed in this place after 9pm as it turns into a "bar" after this time.  Lame.

That is in no way influencing my review, I just though you should know EVERYTHING.   Let's get to it:

I came here with a friend on a Sunday, we chose this place because it's one of the few places you can dine:
    - on a patio
    - for lunch
    - on a Sunday

It's a crying shame that Mizuna only does lunch on weekdays, what gives guys?!

Well, most of the appetizers were $5.50 all day long, which was nice.  I got the nachos, they were very pretty....but the flavor was just...OK.  Nothing special.  If you've had nachos at Bennigans/Fridays/Applebees you've had them here too.

I was also informed that domestic pints were $2.50!!!!  Amazing!  I ordered an Iron Horse Pale Ale.  I hoppy little wonder ale brewed in Ellensburg, WA.  I ordered and the waitress informed me that "that beer is not included in the $2.50 beers"

    Wait...what?  The Fuck?!

Golden, CO and St. Louis, MS are "domestic" while Ellensburg, WA...is not?  Please people, change your verbage.  Just tell me the sparse few beers that *ARE* $2.50.  It's deceptive to say a phrase like "all domestics", when this really includes about three Bud/Miller/Coors beers.

I don't really hate this place, but with better options for patio dining (The Elk, I'm looking at you) I really see no reason to come here again.

AN AMAZINGGG HAPPY HOUR. by far.

2.50 blue moons during HH? are you kidding? Sign me up!

My friend is ultraa allergic to peanuts and the waitstaff was more than kind to her in accomadating her needs and being extra careful with her food. so kudos to them!

You NEED to try their salmon dip, and all of their appetizers are $5.50 during HH, which is incredible since their food is amazing.

I've been here 3 times and their service is always on and more than friendly/ on time.

It was fine. I was there to see friends, really. But come on guy, the 25 minute wait for a beer was a little much. I was there two hours and only got one refill of my water. It was definitely slow, service-wise.

The food was fine. Not great, not awful. Just fine. They have Blue moon on Tap. So they get a little love. Also, the whole place is a little too cool for spokane.

When I'm in town, I like to visit the Steelhead.  The atmosphere is light and unpretentious (at least in the post-workday hours) and allows for a hella good time.

This is a great place to meet up with friends and socialize over drinks. Also a great place to have an office lunch. The service is fast and friendly.

Update: 7/14/08;  I recently went back to the "Head" for a bite to eat before a movie... I will not change my rating becuase they have my fav beer on tap; Mac and Jacks; but the food was less than desirable. Now I'm hoping they were having an off day but I wasn't impressed. the food alone gets one star, but the service was still excellent, the beer was fantastic and now they have out door seating so I'm still happy.
