I had a few friends speak highly of this place so I wanted to try it. Albeit it was during Fiesta! We do a bar crawl all weekend so I put this on our list. As far as I knew, last call in Gloucester was 12:30. We left Mitch's at 11:40 looking to hit Stones. Walked in a bit before midnight. Door was open and there were people inside. We walked up to the bar and the bartender immediately yelled at us! "We're done! Like everyone else is in town! Closed, go!" Wow, um...so maybe on this end of Main Street it was but not down by fiesta! Next time I'll stay put or hit the Franklin for last call. Even if that was indeed the case, there was no need to be that rude! I'm not a tourist, I'm a local. And this local will be taking her big group and money elsewhere!!!
Review Source:Not quite sure why this place has suh a high rating. Â I will give it that the service was very good and that the staff was friendly but other than that it was nothing short of average. Â It's posted that they are good for groups and kids, but that is not the case. Â The seating is limited. Â I had the pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. Â Hubby had the Reuben. Â Both were just ok. Â I've definitely had better.
Review Source:Hands down my favorite place in Gloucester to go and just relax and hang out. Â Whether we're mucking it up with friends at the bar, watching the Bruins or Celtics, playing scrabble or apples to apples, destroying nachos and burgers (and beers), or I dunno, just to pop in and say hey, I straight up love this place. Â Trish and Gary are awesome, Jamie and Ryan are awesome, its just all...so...awesome.
Review Source:Such a wonderful little stumble this afternoon. I used to frequent the bar across the street, but after being repeatedly disappointed there, but was so delighted at the atmosphere when I walked into Stone's. My boyfriend and I ordered drinks from the lovely bartender/server, and the bar was packed with what seemed to be regulars. As we struggled to understand the rules of the game we picked up (Shut the Box--now a favorite), our server explained it to us with great kindness and humor. Chowder, albeit a little cold, was yummy. Burgers HUGE and delicious. Will keep coming back.
Review Source:Stone's Pub has everything you could ever want in a local pub!
1. It is a stone's throw away from everything that Gloucester has to offer.
2. The bartender was wonderful! Ryan told us about all of the best things to do in Gloucester, introduced us to a few other patrons, and kept the conversation rolling.
3. The owner, Gary, was amazing and truly loves his town and his bar. He even gave us his coconut macaroon recipe!
4. John, the cook, was the kind of guy who took pride in everything he served up. We ordered up a serving of their pulled pork nachos. And this NC girl was impressed! He took the same care with every other meal that I saw him prepare.
Overall, this bar takes great pride in being the kind of place that you can kick back and relax. The food is pub fare but done very well and cooked with the kind of love and care that you can taste.
Love the fact that there are snuggly pillow pets laying around. And the fish in the bathroom was cool! If you're in Gloucester, don't miss this gem!
This is all I ever wanted from a small pub in a small town:
1. locals having a beer while watching sports (was it hockey? Some sort of championship-type game where outside noise/conversation is unwelcome and everyone is very into the game)
2. Girlfriends joining their men at the bar with drinks in hand, cursing in townie-speak
3. Bartenders who know everyone walking through the door
4. A line-cook who kept the grill on to make me a burger though I came in (hungry) well-after he could have refused to make me any food.
5. a pretty delicious and relatively cheap burger with fries
6. a popcorn machine filled with stale popcorn for patrons to munch on while downing local beers
7. LOCAL BEERS
I don't know what more I can say beyond: This is a place where the locals are strangers but they make you feel like friends.
This is a great pub right downtown. Â All the food looked good, I had a grilled cheese and onion sandwich. Â I know that sounds weird, but it was awesome.
The place is also spotless, nice layout, there's a secret booth seat on the way to the bathrooms which are nicely decorated as well.
I can't wait to go back with a bigger appetite.
Living in Gloucester now for almost a year and have been doing a slow crawl, trying all the local food establishments
.A few are blech, most are mediocre but Stone's Pub is one of three in my awesome category. The bartender was fantastic and attentive as he doubled as our server.
He suggested we try the Sausage Stew which was DELISH!
I could eat some right this minute!
Both of our sandwich selections were tasty and we cleaned our plates which included crisp cole slaw with cranberries. Yum!
People were crowded around the bar having lively conversation and the atmosphere was very comfortable and low key. Loved this place. We found our regular "nosh".
Thanks!
There we were...visiting Gloucester MA from North Conway NH, with our 5 yr old son in tow. We were starving but didn't want another big, fancy lunch. So, a little past noon we stepped into Stone's, taking a risk ont he pub vs child thing.
First of all, let me say that the staff was excellent and very welcoming. From my wife's perspective the place was as clean as can be. My son found something he loves on the menu right away (Mac and Cheese).
We were seated right away, had our food in just the amount of time it takes to reflect on the morning of activities around Gloucester, including a complete re-enactment of the time at the touch tank at the Gloucester Aquarium. The beer selection was wonderful and the food cooked to perfection.
Yes, Stone's is a pub, but before the lights go down in this seaport town this is simple restaurant that is a perfect stop on a family trip.
I enjoyed the food very much but better was the service. The bartender and waitress who chatted with us were really friendly -- perfect "bartender" attitude -- and I was a little surprised but relieved by because the interior is more elegant than we were expecting for a place with "pub" in its name. Which, frankly, Gloucester needs more of since there is no shortage of dive bars in this town. The one downside is the space is a little small, but that's not unusual for Gtown.
Review Source:This is a great place. Â Homey and warm. Â Very friendly. Â There's a lot of TV's to watch any game that's on. Â A special booth in the back for a private group, private tv included.
They have a somewhat limited temporary menu, but are creating some really yummy additions daily. Â Everything that I have tried is fantastic! Â Mac and cheese, sausage stew, pulled pork and macaroons. Â All were delicious.
The bartenders are friendly and pour a good drink. Â They have a range of beers, liquors and spirits. Â They are very knowledgable about making drinks. Â
I recommend this to anyone looking for a less pretentious but nice place to go for food and a drink, or just to hang out.
I have been here two evenings since their opening in November 2010. The place is cozy... I'd guess about a dozen tables in the fore with the L-shaped bar situated aft. There's about a dozen or so stools along it. As a result, the ambiance has a very relaxed and homey feel, exactly what I want out of a "pub".
The beer selection is great. They have a good range of draught and bottled beers with a few local brews featured. I haven't enjoyed a cocktail or wine here yet, but judging from the liquor selection and the wide demographic of patrons, I have a feeling anyone's taste can be satisfied.
As for the food, the selection is modest but commensurate with the feel and size of the pub. As for the quality and taste, it was delicious. I enjoyed my pulled pork ciabatta bread sandwich. I especially loved the sweet potato fries. I'm not a big sweet potato fry guy, because they are typically a mushy consistency. But Stone's were nice and crispy without being overcooked. I also loved the sausage soup, and will probably get at least a cup every time. I've also heard the mac n cheese is excellent, so I'll be trying that next time as well. In general, Stone's is among the best for good ol' pub comfort food.
I haven't dined at a table, but my bartender was attentive, polite, courteous, hilarious and really sweet. The owner, Gary, was there on both occasions and he too was very polite and attentive. You can tell he genuinely cares about his patrons and takes pride in the establishment. One, because the whole pub is extremely clean and well kept. Second, he interacted well with the patrons. He was very interested in how the food tasted and he clearly enjoyed discussing it. It was obvious that the staff really enjoyed working there which is a huge reason why I feel so comfortable at Stone's.
They have a bunch of large flat screen televisions which make it a great place to catch a game...something I did on both visits. Â i.e. no bad seat in the house. In all, it's also a great place to bring a group of friends to chat it up or have a few laughs while enjoying some great food and drink.
For you Cape Ann locals, you've got a great new hangout and I am looking forward to visiting Stone's again.
