Great views, assorted traditional New Mexico cuisine.  Red sauce was rich and spicy.    Salsa was average along with guacamole.  Margaritas were strong and the perfect refresher after our bull of the woods hike.  Enchiladas were perfectly seasoned and composed appropriately.

We stayed in the ski valley for a couple nights in June while we hiked Wheeler Peak. I'm so grateful that this cantina was open for business and ready to feed some hungry hikers during the off season. The food and most of the employees were fantastic!

Meal #1 (pre-hike dinner): I was so pleased that the server steered me towards something that wouldn't sit in my stomach like a rock during our epic climb. I had a delicious turkey, avocado, tomato, and bacon sandwich. My companion had a black and blue burger and loved it. Service was excellent!

Meal #2 (post-hike dinner): Blue corn chicken enchiladas with red & green chile. Scrumptious! Also tried the chile relleno app which was awesome. The Brazilian cocktail was strong as hell and kicked my ass after being at 13,000 feet that day. Our server was a little standoffish and seemed quite overwhelmed with her Saturday night duties (which I'm sure are miniscule in this light summer season). Luckily our server from the night before came over to check on us and clear plates from time to time.

We were toast after the hike and ended up getting a room for a 2nd night at the suites next door. This was a good thing because we got to enjoy...

Meal #3 (breakfast): We showed up at 8 a.m. and were the only breakfast customers at that hour. Our server was amazing and funny, what a pleasure! I enjoyed the huevos rancheros with papas (to die for). I split a short pancake stack with my friend and it was one of the best dining out pancakes I've had. Mmmm!

One of my hiking friends was camping that weekend, and he said it was his best camping trip ever because the cantina was a short walk away. I agree. If we hadn't had this delicious watering hole to enjoy, our trip would not have been as much fun. So happy to have found this little bit of heaven in Taos!

The food is really good and the service is attentive and caring.

It took an hour to get the food. They told us when we ordered that it would take an hour to get the food. No problem. As long as we get a heads up, we can be prepared.

The waitress asked if we would like an appetizer since the wait was so long. We asked for chips, queso and guacamole. She came back about 10-15 minutes later and said they were "making the chips." She came back 3 more times, every 10-15 minutes and said they were still "making the chips." At the 45 minutes mark, she brought several orders of tortilla soup. All the orders had chips. They were not homemade. WTF? We never got our chips and salsa but we did get a cup of guacamole. I guess we were supposed to eat that with either our fingers or a spoon.

They did not charge us for the chips we never got nor were we charged for the guacamole.

When she brought the check, she thanked us for our patience and said "These two weeks (Christmas/ New Years) are the busiest time of the year." News flash - they come the same time every year. Stock up!

    Other than that, great place!

    Smiley face for food.

For what it does, they do it well. I have no idea how I let this review wait so long. This was our all time FAVORITE Apres Ski spot. Strong, delicious margaritas... Prickly Pear? AMAZING (our vacation favorite!)- awesome staff, extensive menu and much better value for the quality than other spots that are closer to the slopes... this place was worth the short trek and we will happily set up camp here again if (when, really) we are back in Taos Ski Valley!

Tip: Happy hour is a great value!!

My friend and I didn't try the food, but we were happily surprised by the great beers Stray Dog had both on tap and bottled/canned.  Also, the house margaritas blew me away.  Fantastically mixed, they're not the sweet syrupy yuckness east coasters are forced to accept as $5 house margaritas.

(Also, might I suggest to any bloody mary lovers and/or brave souls... ask for the cholula hot sauce with your unsalted margarita and shake a few glugs into your drink.)

Kinda small place, especially around happy hour. We seem to eat upstairs most of the time. The food is decent  with large portions, I suppose being in taos it tastes a little better, but, hard to screw up a chicken taco. I like this place.

Hubby and I have visited this place as much as we can whilst staying in the Taos Ski Valley June 2010 and June 2011.  This joint is casual, relaxed, and comfy....and they serve great food!  Burgers, green chile stew, pulled pork sandwiches (among others), reasonably priced beers on tap, and specialty margaritas....the menu isn't pretentious, the staff is attentive and friendly, and the prices are reasonable.  We've enjoyed everything we've had and are sad to leave the TSV!

(Stray Dog also sells homemade chocolate chip cookies, 4 per saran-wrapped package, for $2.50!)

I returned to Taos Ski Valley for my second year in a row and I have to say, the Stray Dog was one of my deciding factors in making it an annual trip. The days always seem to start off right when you have a super friendly staff greeting you at the door and a delicious breakfast burrito in hand before hitting the slopes. After a long and challenging day riding TSV, coming back to the Stray Dog and settling in to one of the tastiest (and strongest) Margarita's I've ever had was a perfect pre game to the cooked to perfection green chili cheeseburger that followed. Of course we had to sample the award winning chili rellenos which were absolutely incredible as well!

As far as atmosphere goes, the Stray Dog has an inviting charm, a diverse music selection, a great Apres Ski crowd and an upstairs bar that allowed for our big group to spread out and enjoy what felt like VIP service...but I'm sure they make most guests feel like that!

I look forward to many more trips back to Taos and of course some more fun times and great food at Tim's Stray Dog Cantina!

Visited Tim's Stray Dog Cantina in the Taos Ski Valley following a long day of shredding steeps at Taos.  The server was super fun and really, really good at her job, you know, anticipating the patron's needs, smiling and answering questions, etc.  The chili rellenos were scrumptiously prepared with blue corn crust and were perfectly tasty with the side of green chili.  The nachos we pretty large and had plenty of cheese and jalapenos for all the chips around.
In my mind, a place like Tim's is the epitome of apres ski experience, which for me is primarily a lively atmosphere, good nachos and ice cold beer.  I would definitely visit Tim's again if I ever return to TSV.

I like Tim;s Stray Dog and eat there more than anywhere else when in the ski valley. Friendly bartenders and wait staff, really good green chili cheeseburgers. Solid breakfasts as well. Nice place to catch a beer after skiing. Good atmosphere.  One note to the owners (and warning to diners):  the enchiladas sound good on the menu, but there is no mention or warning of the fact that they are filed with beans and sit on a bed of beans.  I mean WAY too many beans... then more beans. Not what I call "chicken enchiladas." Easy to fix -- or keep as is, but tell people on the menu what they're getting. Otherwise, A-OK.

This is a wonderful, relaxed, restaurant/bar near the base of Taos ski resort.  It was right across from our hotel room, and I ate there three times in four days.  Only had granola for bfast and it was fine, but here's my take lunch/dinner food:
First, the green chili is AWESOME.  Served with a warm flour tortilla it's a great combo of textures and flavors - just the right amount of hot.  I topped it off with a Santa Fe Pale Ale on draft - perfection while watching the snow fall after a morning of skiing.

Dinner - I had enchiladas, and my companions had a green chili cheeseburger (he loved it) and frito pie.  For those of you who are note familiar with NM food - frito pie is just like it sounds - a plate/bowl of fritos topped with chili, sour cream, cheese, and sometimes other stuff. Said pie was reported to be "really good."

The burger/frito pie eaters (age = 20, gender = M) topped their evening with a piece of turtle cheesecake, which they said was "freakin awesome."

    The staff is super friendly.
Definitely a good place to hang.

Tim's is a pretty cool place for relaxing after a long day in the Valley.  It's right at the base of the mountain and has a very comfortable feel inside and out.

I visited in the summer after hiking Wheeler Peak and worked up an appetite for some green chile!  They can put their famous green chile on just about anything on the menu and it's authentically HOT!  Not for amateurs, for sure!

The service way just okay, as it seems like the locals mainly keep to themselves but they are amenable to small talk conversation.  Our waitress was a holistic healer and helped another diner with a headache.  That's pretty good service!

Tim's also has different varieties of picante sauces available for purchase.  I grabbed a couple as souvenirs.

They have a fair selection of beer on tap, some of which comes from local breweries.  I plan on visiting again soon.

We went to Tim's twice during July 2008 while staying at Alpine Village Suites (two of us for one evening meal and four of us the next night). There were not many options during the off-season, but the food was okay. The service wasn't as good, but we'd try it again for the green chile cheeseburgers and other solid fare. Too bad the Tim's shirts and hats were so expensive; we wouldn't have minded representin.'
