Eh. Came on a Sunday night and it wasn't very busy. Nice deck with view of river. Rat Bastard ale was just ok, nothing special...could have been colder, and kind of flat, I'm not sure if that is the style or maybe we got the end of the keg. Hubby got fish and chips and said it was just ok. I felt like eating light and got the hummus platter appetizer. The hummus itself was ok. A large scoop, with nice fresh veggies. Two downsides, the veggies were pretty watery, and the pita bread had clearly been warmed, then sat there, so it was cold and hard. Bummer. They did have a nice little private dog run.
Review Source:This place is just pure awesomeness. Â The location is clutch, right on the river! Â My husband and I make a trip to the Russian River 1-2 times per year and when we canoe down the river, the destination is stumptown brewery at the very end. Â This brewery is an amazing reward after a 3-4 hour canoe trip. Â It is such a cool place, loaded with entertainment such as horse shoes, ice hokey tables and pool. Â The outside garden area is absolutely beautiful and huge and the view is the river (obviously since it is on it). Â There is also an inside bar that serves delicious craft beer and some of the best and strong bloody mary's ever! Â I wish I could go to their annual beer festival that they host, but will be working at that time. Â Maybe next year!
Review Source:The ambience/setting is wonderful. Nice outdoor bar and expansive deck with the Russian River in the background is peaceful and relaxing. Friendly, knowledgable bartender (didn't get her name but we were there today). Some beer brewed on site and the light Ale is tasty. We stopped in here on our way home from camping in Duncan's Mills and were pleased to find parking for our truck and trailer close by. The food was just average, maybe even below IMO. I ordered BLT on sourdough. No sourdough-,just your average white bread, bacon was very overdone and no strips of bacon, just slices/odd sized pieces. Maybe if I would've sent it back..we were in a bit of a rush so it would have impeded on our drive home. My husband liked his chicken sandwich and the garlic fries were..garlicky..
I will definitely try this place again and either order something different or speak up lol :
I'd give 3-1/2 stars if I could.
It's unfortunate because this place has great potential. I came for lunch on a gorgeous sunny day, with my daughter and a few girlfriends. The back patio space is great! There is lots of seating, it's right on the river, and great music was playing. This sounds like the makings for a fabulous lunch.... You order your food from a food stand and wait for it to be brought to you. The first indicator this was not going to go well was that the kids who seemed to be in charge of the whole food operation looked to be about 16 years old. We ordered 4 sandwiches, a hummus plate, and a kids' chicken fingers plate. While waiting, we ordered sodas from the bar, which were all totally flat. Then we kept waiting... and waiting... and waiting........... After 30 minutes, we still didn't even have the hummus plate or the kids meal. We asked and were told it would be right up... It was another 20 minutes before we got our food.... for a grand total of 50 minutes waiting for food in the blazing hot sun. This was a bit of  a buzzkill to our afternoon!
Atmosphere is great.... Food is good.... Service is TERRIBLE
Two stars for Stumptown Brewery - and my hubby thinks I'm being too generous. One star is for the location. The view over the river is very nice. The other star is for whoever brews the beer, as it's pretty good, and I feel bad that the service is of such a poor quality that it's not being supported as it should be. We were in town on vacation, so we made the best of it. But really, guys, come on. You just gotta get it together. If you expect your customers to order at the bar or at a table in the back, be clear about it, and please don't send us to two locations - the bar for drinks, the back table for food? And then we were sent back and forth because it appeared that the wait staff shifts were changing or something... Please remember to bring the food out when it's ready in the kitchen... And it's cash only? It's 2013 - you really can't get away with that anymore unless your average bill totals are waaayyyy lower than the ones that ring up at this place. Sigh. I really loved Guerneville, so I want this place to be better. Pretty please?
Review Source:Great place to start or end your Russian River float! Â Nothing like a nice cold ale to wrap up a day on the river :)...
We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, ribs, and a couple burgers. Â Portions were all very generous. Â Unfortunately, the taste was mediocre. Â I had the ribs -- which had a TON of meat on it, but it not fall off the bone or anything, and the BBQ sauce was a ok.
I do like the out door seating area, equip with air hockey and other games!! Â Lots and lots of bikers and locals -- but that's what made it fun. Â Like I said, great location for a day on the Russian :)
When I stepped back to think about some of my favourite outdoor hangs in SF, I closed my eyes and thought of a place with a large picnic table patio on a river in the wilderness. Oh, wait, that's not the city... that's Stumptown on the Russian River.
Ten of us in Guerneville for a long weekend puttered down here on the Saturday St. Paddy's day. With a BBQ out back, boardgames (Battleship!), beers on tap, and Irish Car Bombs happening, I'd imagine this is what an average day time is at this place. I didn't delve into the food, and stuck to the Russian River Brewery's ales (which is kind of them carrying considering they brew their own, too).
Really... on the bank of the river, outdoors, hawks over head, I don't know what else you ask for when you're road tripping or staying in the area.
Went for lunch with a co-worker and sat outside. The food was fantastic and the scenery can't be beat. What a great spot on the Russian River. We here in town are lucky to have this great local place.
The bartender and chef were really nice and welcoming. I highly recommend lunch here.
I have a hard time hating this place because with proper management it could be FANTASTIC. The old bar is really cool. The outside seating overlooking the deck is amazing. They carry some great beers. It's a great stop on the way back from the coast. Problem is the four time's I have actually tried there food only once was it anything other than bland and dry and that was a special of the day they had. This last weekend three of use stopped in. Grabbed a beer and went out to sit in the sun. There was acouple gals bringing people their food but in 30 minutes not one bothered to ask us if we wanted food let alone another beer. Another couple rounds was a easy sell at our table. Basically if you want a good beer and a nice place to hang this is it. As long as you don't want to eat or mind going up to the bar to get every beer yourself despite there being "paid" employees that you'd think could do that for you. Tip??? We don't need no stinking Tip. We went to another place not far away that was more than willing to trade beer for money. :-) It's a shame this place doesn't have a better manager for sure.
Review Source:I give it a star for location, and tasty beer. Service there sucked big time. I'm not a demanding customer, but when I went to the bar to ask for a glass of water. Â the bartender rolled her eyes and let out a huge sigh, as if I ordered some outrages tiki drink. It was freaking water! Yes we had ordered beers, but I had my son with me. What the hell was he supposed to drink??
The locals at the bar? Well they're locals, you would expect them to get used to having out of towners walking in. Nothing like being stared down for ordering beer. Which was good, but enjoying a beer in a uncomfortable setting was not. (I understand that an establishment has no control what other clients do, but when an employee partakes in the rude behavior. There is no excuse.)
We ordered food as well. All I remember is that my kid refused to eat his cheeseburger (he loves cheeseburgers).
Good beer and jukebox.
They brew their own beer and have a few other local brews on tap. Â The staff was really nice and happy. Â I had their Tilapia sandwich. It was nice and crispy. The jukebox was so great. Â
Don't half step. Come here during the summer months and sit outside in the back.
This place is fantastic on a warm sunny day. Their outside patio is THE PERFECT PLACE to be during that weather. What better place to be with a nice, cold, tasty beer!
The food was typical pub food. Nothing out of this world, yet still tasty enough.
The staff is fun and helpful and generally a great crowd.
I can't really speak too much to the indoor side of this place. I came here on the night before Thanksgiving and it was dead, but really...who wouldn't expect that? :)
It's dark on the inside but mellow and friendly otherwise.
I'll definitely be back when I'm back in town!
I tried it simply for location. Â Easy to see, across from our cottages, walkable. Â And it had 3 stars, which isn't all THAT bad. Â And it's pub grub? Â How hard is it to butcher pub grub?
Apparently, making pub grub edible IS hard, because it eludes Stumptown Brewery. Â Granted, the beer was ok. Â I had the wheat. Â But husband ordered the bbq pork sandwich (wasn't awful, but there are other places in Guerneville that would have been a better choice.). Â The roll was dry and there were about 6 gallons of bbq sauce on it, so I figured with 6 gallons of bbq sauce, even a tire could taste ok.
I tried the simple chicken tenders, and the little one had a kid's burger. Â Even my 6 year old couldn't eat her burger. Â It rivaled the look and taste of a flip flop or other leather footwear. Â My chicken tenders were far from tender. Â The french fries were cold (I tried the garlic fries). Â Tons of garlic in the bottom so I fried my taste buds by taking a mouthful of garlic in a feeble effort to attempt to finish my meal. Â Absolutely gross.
Go for the beer if you need a change from wine, maybe even go for the outside patio (although I never ventured that far in to this place). Definitely eat elsewhere. Â There are other choices in Guerneville, like Big Bottom Market with fresh ingredients.
Sorry to be the bearer of negativity. Â It's definitely not my usual style.
Their own brewed beers aren't that great (I like IPAs), and the staff wasn't very friendly. The location is kinda nice, and there are some other decent beers on draft, but coming from out of town, I won't bother stopping in next time I pass through and will try somewhere else instead.
Review Source:This is an awesome brewery right by the river. Â Not the biggest fan of their beers, but I like that they carry Laguinitas and other local breweries. Â What's really cool is the outside seating and a view of the Russian River. Â As you can get a glass of beer, walk out and sit down near the river and enjoy your beer and nature. Â The lunch we had was decent, but I hear their BBQ oysters are only available on the weekend, but off the hook.
Review Source:We love this place.
Here's why- the location is incredible, right on the river with a huge outdoor deck and plenty of shady seating. They also have an outdoor bar and pool table, and tvs in case there is a game or something on, but I am all about that view. There is a dog area. there is an entrance just for those dogs, and for the hippies. They also have the most incredible bbq'ed oysters from Drakes Bay on the weekends, and delicious fish and chips (and I am judge-y about fish and chips). Â Great drinks (nice pour). Tasty beers. Funny bartenders. Cool regulars.
But the main reason we love it so much is that every single time we have been there, we end up having the best days. you know that chill feeling you get as soon as you start that River Road drive? Stumptown feels exactly like that. Every time we make the trip from the Bay Area, it is totally worth it.
I love this place. It is that simple. I used to come to this place before it was this place. It was midway. I used to get my lemon heads there... now I get vodka sodas and I am ok with that.
Badass bartenders and a patio that when it is sunny that is the only place you want to be.
Thank you Stumptown for the great drinks!
Wow, I was really excited to be a part of the Stumptown Beerfest this weekend. I was online right at 1pm when the tickets went on sale along with 30 of my friends. Somehow I got through and got a ticket. Unfortunately the other 29 did not. This was because the ticket site shut down and was only accepting random people. The event sold out in 1 minute, came back 30 minutes later, sold out again and so on.
This year the tickets are non-transferable. Which means I have a $70 ticket to go to a beer festival by myself. That sucks:( I called the Brewery to see if there were any other options as I was sure there were people out there that 29 of their friends got tickets and they didn't get one. So I was nice and polite because I am in customer service and I hate how people yell and scream to get their way.
I was told 2 different times that they would exchange my ticket for me the week of and sell them to the people on the waiting list. I was also told to email this one person. And they would get back to me on instructions. I let a nice amount of time go by between each attempt (like 3 weeks) to get absolutely no response.
So here I am 3 days out and I call again. They tell me "there is absolutely nothing we can do for you." WHAT!? Why would you have non-transferable tickets, or accept responsibility for having a shitty website, or tell me to wait it out. Well, jokes on you Stumptown. Instead of getting money for this ticket by allowing me to sell to someone else. I will be disputing the charge on my credit card for your less than poor level of service.
It was Saturday evening and Elvis is in the building.
Came in for a casual dinner and drinks. Grab a menu, place your order and pay at the front, grab a metal pail with condiments, napkins, silverware and table number then find a table.
Our party of 4 found a large picnic table on the back patio to enjoy our beverages while waiting for dinner to arrive. Â
Food arrived about 20 minutes later. We shared the asiago garlic fries, they were pretty good. Hot, fresh and a little oily just like they should be. I ordered the Southwestern chicken sandwich with a side salad and citrus dressing. The chicken was sitting on a toasted French roll with pepper jack cheese, red onion, tomatoes and lettuce. It was a hefty portion (just what I needed after a day canoeing the river) and tasted great too.
Elvis was kind enough to sit down, put a ring on Stephanie M. and myself, steal a fry and say sweet things in our ears while the other patrons smiled and laughed. Yes, hubs watched it all happen but knew not to interfere with The King.
It is a relaxing place with a full bar, a fenced in area for dogs to play, a pool table and board games. It is one of those places that will have you coming back for more.
I brought my guy here on the way back to the city following Father's Day in Guernville. We both like good beer and sunshine, so it seemed ideal.
He ordered the Bezerker Wheat and I ordered the Rat Bastard Ale. That's pretty typical of our beer preferences and both were very good and refreshing.
I was impressed at the size of the Drakes Bay Oysters that they had for sale on the back patio, but I was way to full to even think about it. Such a shame, because for $2.50 you get quite the oyster.
Maybe next time! Summer has just started.
Well, I am certainly "Stumped!" I guess the Pony Express doesn't make it up here in Geurneville, but they are a CASH ONLY establishment. Can Jerry Brown and Obama use some of that stimulus money to help with technology such as credit card machines?
I had the sampler of 4.
Rat Bastard Pale Ale ~ (4/10); Nothing going on here. Not a well executed brew.
Bushwhacker Wheat ~ (4/10); Ugh. No enjoyment out of this one, and it was a hot day where this summer style should have been refreshing.
Blimey the Wanker ~ (4/10); Pete and repeat where on a boat, Pete fell off, who was left?
The pulled pork sandwich was moist and okay, but not a smoked pulled pork from what I picked up... More of a sauced and slathered. Â The fries were the frozen type and didn't taste great. Too crunchy.
There is a great patio out back where you can wonder with puzzlement who the next character will be walking, swimming or stumbling by.
Pass.
When u first walk in the first thing you will notice is all the cool things to look at, seriously we wer there for 2 hours and never ran out of things to look at!!
Food: The food was 4 out of 5. standard bar food by any standards. mostly fried foods, but the Quality was where it stood out. The Fish N chips could have been fried at a higher temperature to prevent the grease from soaking in, but nothing crazy.
Beer: 4 out of 5. 5$ will get u a well brewed beer. i chose to try at least one of every beer the brewery had to offer. The Rat Bastard was my fav. they also had a few other beers on tap like Alaskan amber and racer 5.
Staff: 4 out of 5. When we arived to watch the sharks game it was on sportscenter and we asked the bartender if he would change it to the sharks game, and he did with a smile. We usually get pretty loud and this seemed to b the place for it. the hokey game was full of fights and patrons participated in the cheering.
Thanx for the hospitality, and we will be back.!!
CAUTION: THIS PLACE CHEATS TOURISTS
I say that because they sneakily tried to charge us a 35% tip on everything. Â When I called the waitress on it, she said, "Oh I'm sorry, they just told me to do it this way. Â I didn't know any better." Â Then she paid us back the 15% overcharge. Â So, they tried to rip us off. Â
If that weren't bad enough, the service was awful. Â When I asked about the "Pan-Seared Tilapia Sandwich", the waitress said, "Honey, this is a bar. Â It's fried." Â "Why do you call it pan-seared then," I asked. Â No answer.
When we got our food, it took 7 minutes to get our silverware, even though she said it would be right out. Â I walked in to find some silverware, and she was chopping it up with the barman. Â Then, when she saw she was caught, she rushed out with the silverware.
I give the place 2 stars for the great outdoor seating and the decently priced food. Â I would not recommend it though.
This is exactly what a roadside pub should be - loud music, dark corners, cute bar tenders, a huge, well shaded back patio overlooking the river, a pool table, $4 pint-sized cocktails, delicious home-brewed beer...
And a tell-tale menu of fried everything - including tilapia (aka rich man's catfish). The food was delicious, with nods toward the ribs, the burgers and the onion rings. Unfortunately the aforementioned fried tilapia... not so nice. However it was much better after my third $4 cocktail.
Granted we were here on a HOT summer day, and were a bit hungry. Â We were hoping to cool our souls with a brew and fill our belly with some pub food. Â We didn't get much of either.
They weren't serving food. Â They had a HOT barbecue flaming on the patio & said if we want to bbq some dogs, we can buy some from them. Â Ummm...yeah, we tried it, but we just got even hotter and grumpier about the place.
The beers were awite, nothing to write home about. Â I mean, they didn't make us forget the lameness.
Yeah, the joint is near the river, but I don't know, on this visit they definitely didn't have their A-game.
Our first night in Guerneville was a smashing success! The Stumptown Brewery will make you feel like a loc, as you hang with the folks who are bolted to their bar stools and heckle while you play pool.
The Stumptown is a huge bar, with a fireplace on the left (!) - perfect for a crisp fall night. The bartender calls out to you right away, "hey guys!" and sets you up with the house brews. The Rat Bastard Pale Ale and the Fossil Fuel with "ancient yeast" did us right, yes indeed.
The pool table was refreshingly clear of any competition. No one stepping to play doubles or any of that nonsense. Plus, ashtrays were plentiful, and perfect for that mid-game ciggy. Not to mention the back porch, which probably holds hundreds on hot summer nights, conveniently on the river and next to the roasthouse where they turn the pigs on the spit.
Tomorrow we conquer the river. Take down the fishin' poles, that one is mine!
I walked in for the first time and saw a guy in a Bender's shirt and a tin Zeitgeist sign on the wall. Â As soon as my friend told me that Stumptown is run by the same people as Zeitgeist, it all made sense. Â Great dive bar with an awesome, huge outdoor deck overlooking the river (we watched a nine year old hunt pigeons with a BB rifle). Â Not too crowded, either, considering i was Sunday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend (plus they had a band). Â But anyhoo, even as cool at the deck was, I would totally love hanging out in cavelike bar.
I also wish I hadn't eaten right before coming, because my friends ordered some of the best-looking burgers I'd ever seen. Â I'm definitely going to come hungry next time.
The only negatives I have for this place is that dogs are not allowed on the deck, and the two Stumptown beers I had were, well, terrible (IMHO, of course). Â Seriously, I had to choke down the wheat. Â But everything else about this place is so great, I'll give them a pass on the beer.
