Love this bar. Don't go here for food. Their outdoor patio with the fireplace is so laid back. The waitresses are always short staffed so expect to wait a little while. Always have new brews on tap to try. I always start my folly trips off with a cold one at the surf.

This is the best place to drink in Folly. The music is good and not crazy loud. The drinks are good. The atmosphere is pretty good albeit trendy and the decor is beachy comfortable. Try to ignore the drunken beach rats that try to hit on you if you are a single female (or with girlfriends). They look stinky!

This is the best beach bar to wind down after a great day at the beach. Our server was awesome. The burger and chicken sandwich is tasty. All grilled items come off a woodfire grill.
The PAINKILLERS are just like the one's you drink at the Soggy Dollar Bar in the BVI !!!!!!

This place is a must anytime your are at folly beach.

    ENJOY .....

About the closest thing you'll find to a local, yocal dive bar on Folly Beach.  Plenty of beers on tap, food is okay, but there are better places to eat in Charleston.  Some of the other reviewers pointed it out, and I'd agree, the wood fire stove in the back, during the chilly months, would be a great place to hang out.

It's a nice place when you're not looking for some of the other, more crowded spots on the main drag, but I have to admit, you can find more talent at some of the other places...

I use to love going to the surf bar when I lived on Folly. The food was always delicious and the atmosphere very laid back. However, this past weekend I went to Folly to take my friend to the surf bar because he had never been there. I kept bragging about how much I liked it. My experience this weekend there was HORRIBLE. They were not very busy, several tables both inside and out that were open. We came in and sat ourselves, as the sign says, and waited to be helped. At first I excused the bad service until after about 15 minutes of not one waitress acknowledging we were even there, it became pretty irritating. We witnessed one young waitress help the table right beside us, look at us and walk away only to go hang out at the register and check her PHONE. She then continued to ignore us walking up to several tables multiple times to help them - it was horrible and so disappointing. Is this just expected service on Folly in the summer? Hire young 20 something's who have absolutely no work ethic?
We were in there for over 25 minutes with not one person acknowledging us. If it weren't for the fantastic Irish bartender I would absolutely not return. Note if you go sit at bar !

Great food from their woodfire grill.  Specials are usually worth going for! Though their black bean burger is amazing.  Painkillers are a must, a true local favorite.  As long as your expecting good surf like atmosphere and quality bar food you won't be disappointed.  Hate to publish this on yelp as we love it as a local joint versus a tourist trap.

Went here while visiting with my husband after our wedding. We went to the beach because we wanted to see it before we drove back up to NY, but we really didn't know anything about the area. Lunch time rolled around, our stomachs started growling, and we were on the hunt for something good to eat. Surf Bar came up in the AroundMe search, so I decided to lead us there to fill our bellies.

I got the Chicken Philly Cheese Steak, and my husband got the fish tacos. I really should be eating gluten-free, but the Chicken Philly Cheese Steak was COMPLETELY worth the stomach pain a short while later. It was amazingly delicious, and it's hard to get me to say that. The atmosphere was also great and completely synced with the area. We sat on the outdoor patio. I wish there had been some more GF friendly options, but I was super happy with my food decision, even if my stomach wasn't. The waitress was also really nice and very attentive!

If you want to eat or drink anything, don't go here. You will wait 45+ minutes for anything. Pork rinds were ok, nothing special. Chips for the chips and salsa are good but you get more salsa than chips. The device just kills everything decent the surf bar has going for them.

Perfect place for a margarita after a day at the beach! It's perfectly grimy and dark, so don't feel bad about showing up in your sand-covered bikini and cover-up ;) We sat at the bar, watching the TV which was playing surf videos. It was fun and a little raucous with people coming and going ;) The patio looked fun too. It's in a better location than the main-drag, super touristy places. It's off a side street, tucked in a quiet place by itself.

Wow, this place has gone down hill.  Ate there recently, and it took a solid 45 minutes to get our food.  People at other tables got their food before us and they ordered after us.  The food was ok, but not as good as I remembered.  It's probably a good place to go for just drinks, but I'm grown up now, so that doesn't really happen anymore in the mini-van life.  I was very disappointed in Surf Bar.

If outside appearances count, which they don't for me,  (its GENERALLY A PLUS) then Surf Bar, right out of the gate, will possibly put you off.
But this little bar/eatery is one of the best little spots in all of Folly, bar none.
I've been going to the surfbar for the past 2 years on and off, as I don't get to Folly as often as I would like, but when I am within the area, I always make a stop inside, sometimes for dinner, or lunch, and sometimes for the social activity. The service. is top notch, even when this place becomes super busy, the servers and bartenders still manage to take care of everyone in a timely manner, which is crucial for a high volume, small little (very popular) hole in the wall.
The atmosphere is very welcoming, very casual, the beer is cold and the cheese burgers rule in Folly, and possibly beyond, wood-smoked chicken wings., chicken sandwich or cheese steak, all scrumptious!
The Surf Bar is a successful location as peak season and off peak a steady stream of people come for quality live acoustic music, that is pretty incredible.

I love beach bars. I can't eat at most of these shacks, however, because of their typical seafood-heavy menus. Not so at Surf Bar (in fact, I'm not sure that I saw anything fish-related listed).

At the suggestion of locals (and our travel companions who backed up the compliments), Surf Bar has a small menu (only 3-4 options for dinner), which focuses on what you would expect from bar fare. BUT BETTER. And cheap.

While the hamburger was touted as the BEST IN CHARLESTON, there was no question that I was getting a chicken sandwich. Wait... why? Because I haven't had one in years, and it was simple, uncomplicated, FRESH... and prepared very well. My meal was further complemented by an order of perfectly-fried onion rings (there's enough to share! And an fantastic dipping sauce!) and a delicious grilled cheese & tomato soup (YUM!). The boyfriend had some "special sauce" served with his wings; seriously, it was some of the best wing sauce I've ever had. BUT HOT!

Have to give props to our waitress too; she was super nice, patient, helpful & conversational -- even when the restaurant started to fill up.

Everything you'd want in a beach bum bar. Great food (fish tacos are awesome), a cool laid-back atmosphere and good service. Try the "pain killer" when you go, it's like a lowcountry version of a pina colada only not overly sweet and dusted with some nutmeg (I know it sounds odd, but trust me). Just watch out, you won't taste the liquor, but it's there!
They also have a nice outdoor seating area that has a fire roaring if you happen to venture there during the cooler months - a really nice touch.
Be advised that this place can get very crowded on the weekend and when they have live music, so be prepared for that if you go during those times. They also only have a single - one seater unisex bathroom so hope you have a strong bladder if you plan on drinking for a while.  Love this spot!

When we visted Charleston to go to McCrady's, Sean Brock recommended Surf Bar for a good lunch.  That was a great recommendation.

Hands down, this was the best black bean burger I've ever had in my life.  I'm salivating just thinking about it, and it's been over a year and a half since we went.  It was much better than the hamburger my husband got-- after tasting my bb burger, he immediately regret getting its meaty counterpart.

GAWL DANG! this is what I'm talking about when i say 'I want a great beach bar!' The only thing that could make this better is if it sold bait!
Nestled just off the main drag on Foley with great outside seating and on of the best interiors ever. Decorated with the obligatory surfboards but in a believable way like it is actually run by surfers. You can also find hidden gems stapled glue or just left around. Great for eye-spy games with the kids. Yea, I'd say it's kid friendly.

Get the cheese steak, I've never been to Philly but this one is really good and I don't care for  cheese steaks much.

From other reviews on other sites, I was excited to visit Surf Bar.  I talked our group of 8 into going there.  Couldn't have been more disappointed. The wait staff was poor, unhelpful--to the point we felt like they were p'ed off that we were even there.  The beer on tap was excellent and the hummus was good (pita chips served with it, not so much--stale tasting).  Burgers being served looked pretty good, but after continued difficulty with the waitress, we left after the appetizer.  While the manager (presumably) told us they were understaffed that night, I didn't think that was any excuse.

This is just off the main road with nice seating inside and out.  I find the staff very friendly and helpful.  They have a solid menu that's likely to please most of your group, plus they have several daily specials, recenly these were mussels, barbeque, and 3 other choices.  The staff tell me they often have mahi mahi and tuna specials, but not when we visited.  I've been here last year and this and found the place a nice, off-the-main-street bar and restaurant.
