I took the wifey back to Vermont for her birthday in November '12(to take advantage of some free grandparent daycare while we stayed at a local B&B) and was looking for some place special to take her to dinner. Â Having spent the first 21 years of my life in RutVegas, I was tired of the usual Vegas, Killington, and Manchester haunts and wanted to try something new. Â With Lums being closed and the Rutland Restaurant being fresh out of spinach pie and mostacioli , I was looking for something different. Â I had narrowed the search down to Roots and Table 24, niether of which I had been to; randomnly decided on Table 24(actually not randomly, right next to Two Sheas and who doesn't love that place for a few wobbly pops). Â We didn't have reservations and didn't want to wait in line so we opted for the bar seating. Â Great bar seating, great bartender, and plenty of good bar coversations to eavesdrop on(Kid home from college's beer request, Kid-"What beers do you have on tap, Btender-"blah, blah, blah, pale ale," Kid-"I'll have one of those", Father-"What's a pale ale?". Kid-"I don't know, the name sounded good."
Anyway on to the eats:homemade bar chips are redonculous, a nice tight Ceasar salad, skillet cornbread was down and dirty good, both of us had the wood-fired filet-one medium rare and one well done--both cooked to perfection with accompanying taters, and nightly veg. Â The creme brulee special and skillet brownie sundae were great happy-enders. Â Can't wait to get back to this joint sometime soon.
For Rutland, VT, this place is pretty fantastic
The wine list is cheap and there were plenty of good bottles, although a bunch of the Turley was sold out. They should consider doing an iPad wine list and updating it when items are no longer available.
The bread was great (btw - my mother stopped in here once while at another non-food business and had taken some Aleve on an empty stomach and it was giving her a bad tummy ache. They gave her free bread to help her feel better since everything else was closed. So nice)
Food was all good.
Cornbread = good
Mussels = very good
Duck fritters = yum yum yum
Brussel sprouts with bacon - best sprouts ever!!!!
Risottos - both delicious
Lobster Mac n Cheese - also delicious
Four people, food and 2 bot of decent wine = less than $200
I felt really fat leaving here.
