I've been here more times than I can count and I don't have many bad things to say about it.
When ordering, I usually opt for one of their combos (ie: taco, enchilada, flauta) to get a little taste of everything. Â I tend to find it hard to narrow down my options when it comes to food. I think that have some of the best guacamole I've ever put in mouth and the salsa is pretty delicious too. The tacos are just okay to me. I've definitely had more flavorful, but for the price you really can't complain.
Service has never been an issue as you don't have one primary server. I don't know if they split tips or what the deal is, but multiple servers check on you and if there happens to be one walking by and you need something, you can ask without hearing  "let me get your server".
This specific branch was horrible. Â When my food arrived, it was not what I had ordered. Â I asked for 3 different tacos and received 2 of the same kind...and they were all slathered and drowning in raw onions which I did not ask for. Â My husband ordered the chorizo and eggs tacos...he got chorizo, no egg at all. Â Service was horrible. Â My drink never got refilled. Â Complete disappoint and will never return!
Review Source:They have some nice traditional Mexican dishes, but my wife and I were looking more for Tex-Mex, and it didn't deliver. Â If you like mole, chilaquiles, and tomales you'll like this. Â Good drinks, nice portions, great prices, but they should expand their menu for tex-mex and desserts... I really wanted tres leches cake :(
Review Source:Well, being from California and routinely eating Mexican food, we were not too excited about visiting a Mexican restaurant in Illinois. Â Even so, Tacos El Norte is authentic and good. Â Slightly different than what we were used to at home (some of the flavors were Mexican, but not what we are accustomed to) it was still a good dining experience. Â The Carne Asada was excellent, good marinated flavor and cooked in a single strip. Â The chips were adequate, and the salsa had good texture and color but again tasted differently than what we are used to. Â It very well could be the recipes are culturally from a different part of Mexico than the restaurants here in California. Â Overall real good service and the margaritas were very tasty and had a variety of different tequilas to order them with. Â A hearty meal with good drinks is always a good restaurant in my book.
Review Source:This is my lunch spot during the week. My co-worker and I frequent here pretty regularly and let's just say...we're not even close to sick of it. There's never a wait, but there's always people in the restaurant. The service is one of the most prompt that I've ever encountered, and the same goes for their friendliness. There's a lunch special menu of all kinds of combinations. Don't let that discourage you from opening up the menu and seeing what's inside, there's SO much to choose from. They get you in and out so you can make it back to the office within a lunch hour, but you never feel rushed. Food is inexpensive and delicious, I always feel like I ate 3 thanksgiving dinners when I leave there. I'm not a pop drinker, but all of their drinks are in a can, however they do give you a glass of ice to pour them over. The 2 different types of salsas (green and red) are equally tasty! See you next week for lunch, Tacos El Norte! :-P
Review Source:Food was good, but had a problem with a rude waitress (won't bother with details on that, too much to write).
However, I'm sure it was just one bad experience, but the food really was good...maybe the waitress was having a bad day. There were plenty of friendly staff. So, three stars seems fair. Might be able to go back and give more of the menu another try sometime, seems like it has good potential. Lots of options to order from, the restaurant looks nice and clean, and always seems to have plenty of happy customers.
Great lunch specials with a huge menu. So far I had Menudo and a Taco dinner special. No surprises here, just great food and good portions. The Waitresses are super friendly with a pleasant SMILE every time. The dining room is large and plenty of seating with a cheerful appeal, most likely from the inflated Corona bottles hanging from the ceiling. The orders are out quickly if your in a hurry for lunch.
Step Aside El Famous Burrito!
This is our go-to spot when we're in this neck of the woods. Â DH grew up here and compares everything to this place. Â And I can't blame him. Â They have good food, good service and a HUGE menu!
They have crazy lunch specials and offer about every combination you can think of. Â It's crazy. Â I usually have to order ala carte, substitute and whatever - this is the only place that manages to cater to my picky, all over the place taste buds. Â
They also have plenty of seating and TVs around so it makes for a cozy meal. Â Carne asada NEVER fails.
Tacos El Norte? Â Yes please! Â The reason this place is so awesome is because it's cheap, so delicious, and so convenient! Â The chicken nachos are heaven. Â The burritos are heaven. Â The bistec with ranchero sauce and cheese is heaven. Â I really miss this place a lot. Â I didn't realize that trying to get good Mexican food in Colorado would be such a hassel...it's so convenient in Waukegan. Â Oh, be grateful Waukeganites...be grateful.
Review Source:It's good. Â Fine. Â I will admit that. Â Is it the taco Mecca that certain friends of mine purport? Â Not so much. Â I think it's b/c the one little lady is still a student out in the vast wasteland that calls itself central Illinois. Â I can't fault her for that. Â All they have there is La Bamba apparently. Â
My tacos were good, quesadilla better than I thought it would be and the chips were pretty tasty as well. Â They had some intriguing weekend dinner specials that I should probably try next time. Â Maybe the $21.99 surf and turf (filet and lobster tail, even!) will bump them up a few stars (or down?). Â
I got a margarita, and while they get props for the size and having various choices of tequila, they rimmed the glass with sugar. Â WTF? Â It was also obviously a pre-made margarita mix. Â
Service was slow and they were not quick to refill the chips. Â We need our chips, people. Â I did enjoy the Spanish soap operas while eating. Â The only thing better is the Spanish game shows at the laundromat.
have been going to to El Norte since they opened in Waukegan (and use to go to other El Norte's prior to that). Â The quality at the Waukegan location has decreased over the past several years...possibly too focused on the Gurnee location...and prices have gone up. Â Still go, just not as often...used to say that there was no need to go elsewhere for good mexican food, but no longer holds true.
Review Source:Tacos el norte is as authentic as you can get in this area....if you are the only white person among tables of mexican/hispanic folks, you KNOW the food is good and the locals love it! Â First of all, the chips and guac are fantastic....and the food is fast and cheap for excellent quality! Â I have a sensitive stomach and this food has NEVER bothered me after consuming. Â The margaritas are tasty (although last time I went w/my family, even after showing my ID, my margarita was virgin...I guess they don't believe me....I do look like I'm 16-17, but after showing my ID? wtf!)...I didn't mind too much, I just ordered a Corona afterwards because then my alcohol consumption isn't questionable!
I usually get the one tostada dinner, which includes rice and beans (I usually get the ground beef tostada) and that is more than enough food for less than 5 bucks! Â I love Tacos El Norte and so does the fam...we try to go here at least a few times a month when we're up in the Gurnee/Waukegan area
