We love BBQ so we saw this on our way into the area and made a point to stop by on out week vacation. Tuesday night, great weather, live music that was being played at a pleasant level.

We were seated right away and allowed to move our seats to get a good spot for our 1 year old.  Since it was the end of the season the crowd was not that significant.  However they seemed to not learn how to pace their customers when it's not too busy.  I felt a bit rushed and we had no reason to be.  The ribs were really good.  They had good smoke flavor and the BBQ sauce on top was nice and caremelized.  They left the silver skin on the bottle of their baby backs.  I don't mind it but some people swear by removing it.  You make the choice here whether it's a good or bad thing.

The sides were pretty generic.  They served little side dishes of (choice of 2) Baked Beans, salad, coleslaw, potato salad, mac salad, mac and cheese, etc... I had baked beans and cornbread.  They were both good.  My son enjoyed eating them with me.

While the meal was good I would say it's a small step up from a place like Chili's or TGI Fridays.  The environment is their strength.   It was really nice to sit on picnic benches outside with live music.  My advice would be to let the customer enjoy that experience by putting the food out in intervals, allowing one to notice the difference betweek getting your drink, followed by course one, and then course two after the first course is complete and cleared from the table.  Perhaps even take a second drink order before the main course comes out.

I stop here once a year during one of the town's busiest weekends of the season. We always go on a Sunday evening with a large crowd of around 30 people. This is an ideal place for a large group because of the abundant outdoor seating. There are rows of huge red picnic tables under large tents and plenty of gas patio heaters allow for comfortable dining.

The food is nothing too special. As a matter of fact, I've noticed a decline in the quality and portion sizes over the course of the many years that I've been visiting. Regardless, we go every year and always have a great time at the Tail O'the Pup. The menu has everything you'd expect at a BBQ joint. They also serve pitchers of margaritas and beer. Fortunately we are never in too much of a hurry while we are there, so long wait times aren't an issue (as long as the pitchers keep coming!). The place was packed to capacity at the time we arrived and the servers were working their butts off. All things considered, our food came out in a reasonable timeframe.

Overall decent food, though a little overpriced considering the portion sizes. Perfect place for a large crowd on a summer night. Fun atmosphere with a band playing on the stage. We'll be back next year.

Pulled pork sandwich was excellent!  I got it take out so can't speak for the service other than they were friendly and fast when I came in at closing time...

I am from LA, but was visiting Lake Placid with my folks. We decided to stop into TOP for some lunch. I am a huge BBQ fan, so I was pretty excited to get my BBQ on. It was mid-October, so the outdoor seating that is the big draw here was out of play.

I had the brisket and some ribs, a couple of sides and my parents did the same. We all came to the same consensus: the BBQ was plentiful and everything was "pretty good." There is nothing to write home about which is cool, because my parents were with me, so i could just tell them that on the spot.

Service was friendly. I will say that the decor is kitch and cool and since there isn't much else around, this place probably gets a lot of default business.

Tail of pub is part of our annual summer. No, the food isn't great, but it's ok, but we go because it's a fun place for family, friends, kids. Live music  most summer nights. Not top drawer music, often pretty weak, but usually good enough. This is just about being outside, it's a camping feel, a local legend and a fun experience. There is better food les where indeed, but not any other outdoor places that are fun.

If you like to sit outdoors this is the place for you.  Unfortunatly the views are not that great unlees you like looking at a bar.  But the fresh NY air was nice.

The food was good.  I got the pulled chicken sandwich which I thought was very good.  The sause was has a very nice flavor and the chicken was good. I also tried one of the garlic flavored chicken wings which were suprisingly delicious

The place is not upscale!  The place is messy.

I do think that the prices are a little to expensive for the amount of food that we got.  I like to eat and a sanwich with a scope of colesale just isnt going to fill me up.

    NO. DRIVE ON.

We were headed into Lake Placid on Friday afternoon to go hiking for the weekend and we were absolutely starving, so we figured we'd stop here for a quick, early dinner before heading to base camp. The place looked fun and kitschy and it wasn't very crowded. It was a little chilly out, so we sat inside rather than at the picnic tables under the big outdoor tents. We were seated right away and it was immediately apparent that this was train-the-new-waitstaff night. Which, fine. No qualms with that. But the manager was lecturing at them in the middle of the restaurant, only five feet away from our table, and I really didn't need to overhear her critique every move our waiter made.

But that inconvenience paled in comparison to the food. My husband got the pulled pork dinner with coleslaw and baked beans. The pulled pork was alright, but the milky coleslaw had no flavor and tasted exactly like the kind you buy in a giant plastic tub at the grocery store. I had the Jamaican jerk chicken with sweet potato fries and green beans. One of my two pieces of chicken was SO RAW that it was practically still clucking. The other piece, though cooked through, was sort of soggy, like it had been sitting there all day. Even Alex, who will eat almost anything, said it was pretty gross. It would be a compliment to call the other sides--the baked beans, fries, and green beans--mediocre. They were edible, but not worth it.

Overall, it was a terribly disappointing experience. We are definitely kicking ourselves for not waiting until we got into Lake Placid to find a better place for dinner.

I drove past this place while visiting Lake Placid in 2010 and thought it looked awesome. Three huge tents cover picnic tables, a mini bar outside set up in a shed, and a small stage for music. So I stopped for dinner that night to only be disappointed. The service was horrible. My waitress only came to the table when we ordered, to give us our food, and to give us the check. The place wasn't even that busy. The BBQ sauce tasted no better than your supermarkets Open Pit. My favorite moment of the night was when the cook ran to the shed to get the pre shredded pork out of the freezer. So much for feeling like it was home made.   Flash forward to 2011 where in August I needed baked beans for a bbq.  I remembered this was the only thing I liked about this horrible establishment, so I stopped on my way to the bbq and asked the fine hostess outside if I could get baked beans for carry out.  Bad idea.  She took me to the inside of the establishment and told me someone would be with me shortly.  After 15 minutes a older woman in a mini skirt (I wish the fashion police could have arrested her for this fashion mishap), took my order.  Fifteen minutes later (I'm guessing they couldn't find the can opener for their can of pork and beans), she brought out the beans and charged me 5 dollars for a pint of beans.  I think they changed the recipe because the beans tasted horrible this time around.  I should have gotten a can at the local Price Chopper instead.  The only good about the experiences here (for you men out there) was that the waiting staff was all wearing short white shorts (and the old hag in a skirt). My waitress had translucent short's where I could see her choice of underwear. This again is why most reviewers noted it is "fun BBQ", or "great for bikers" because anyone in their right mind would know that restaurants with scantily clad women don't always have the best food (see HOOTERS reviews).

It took 2 and half hours to get our food. Worst service EVER. We had to get our own drinks because they did not have enough servers. Filling our water on our own. If you like to experience frustration, visit this place. You will be fired up like me.

Strangely enough I am going to give this place 3 stars. And being vegan and very picky, that is quite an accomplishment. Here is why:

I did not choose to go to TotP, obviously, but when traveling in groups it is sometimes necessary to take one for the team so I figured they would have to have something I could find palatable. I was surprised when I saw they had a black bean veggie burger on the menu which I thought I would order without the sauce and cole slaw. The problem was, and it was a big one, it is cooked on the same grill with the meat and cannot be done separately or on tin foil. How did I find this out? Our wonderful waitress, Gracie. Though I passed on the veggie burger I very much appreciated that she made the effort to check for me and mostly that she was so honest. :))) So I had the corn without butter and a salad with dressing on the side and while not my most favorite meal ever, the place has a certain charm and the kids in our group had a great time and it was fun due to its quirkiness, abundance of cheesiness and the people with whom I spent the evening.

I did not check out the bathrooms or go into any of the buildings but just took in the outside atmosphere and appreciated being out of my comfort zone for just one night.

    Worst BBQ and lousy service.

Arrived in Lake Placid late in the evening, so we didn't have time to do our "Yelp homework" ordered the "want it all BBQ platter" ribs were dry and extremely tough, chicken dry and shriveled (looked like it was left over from the day prior), pulled pork mediocre at best and came out cold, brisket was fatty and cold as well. Highlights of the platter were the slaw and diet coke!!! Server was abrupt and not very concerned with providing good service. I don't need someone standing over my table but I need more than 2 minutes to look over the menu, and when we asked about something on the menu she said she didn't know but didn't offer to find out. Brought out dessert included with our kids meal before they were finished eating and we specifically asked her to wait. Asked us if we wanted to go boxes while we were all clearly still eating, when we said "no thanks, we're still eating" she said I'll get your check!!! We're a pretty laid back, low maintenance group, so for the low light of the meal to be the service, you've got to be pretty bad! And the food was a close runner up! First and last time at this tourist  trap! This was a quiet Wed. night (June 21, 2011)

I can't really say that there is anything wrong with the food here, except maybe there is not enough of it for the price.  It is certainly not near the best BBQ I have had though.

My problem is that after I eat here I always feel bad.  The food, ambiance and service are just not good enough to justify the price.

I wish it was better, because the idea is great.

The food is not good: fatty ribs, unimpressive sides.  If the locals no longer eat here, you know it's bad news...

Umm ... gross. This age old outdoor BBQ place gets more than its fair share of Summer tourist business. They're doin' okay.

The food is marginal, the menu is pricey, the grounds are filthy, and the restrooms are disgusting. Rumors of health code violations, abusive management, and food poisoning are rampant; and most locals will no longer eat here.

Parking is deadly, but on the upside, there is curb service!
