Overall the food isn't anything special & the price is high for what I think the food is worth. The House Made Potato Chips is the one thing that is worth the price. It is delicious. The service could definitely improve. Our greeting when we entered was met with a surly look and our waitress was not friendly at all. When I was done my glass of wine, she just took the glass away without asking me if I even wanted another drink.
I ordered their margarita special which was close to $15! When I switched to a regular non-special margarita, they still charged me the same amount. I would go for a drink with some homemade chips and then go elsewhere for the rest of my dinner.
The best place to eat in the Waterbury-Stowe area, as far as I'm concerned. The menu is not too large. What the chefs do, they tend to do very well. There is a selection for everyone: beef, pork, poultry, seafood, pasta, vegetarian.
Once again, I mostly strongly urge you to try the Wild Mushroom Bruschetta, filet mignon with Gorgonzola, and the triple berry crisp (all of which I have recommended before on earlier reviews!)
The service is excellent, the atmosphere is cozy.
This visit didn't garner the usual 5-star recommendation because of a few minor issues. First, there was some confusion over our party (which was large), and how the cheque would be settled. Eventually, that was sorted out, and the evening went along accordingly.
The second issue was really because I've set such high expectations for each meal here. While I enjoyed the special pork dish (served with cheddar potatoes and an apple-ramp demi-glace), it was not quite what I had anticipated. The meat was a little over done, and though the sauce had a slightly taste of apple, no actual fruit was in evidence.
If there were to be a criticism of the restaurant itself, it would be the entry/exit set-up through the very narrow bar area. It can get very congested during busy hours or if one is with a large party.
Tanglewoods is an excellent place for dinner in Waterbury. Â Their homemade potato chips are amazing and the duck is so tender! I would definitely suggest to anyone passing through during foliage or ski season to give it a try. I am a local and have loved everything that I have tried there. Driving past the other day I noticed they were decorated for fall and kudos to the designer they look fabulous!
Review Source:Nice atmosphere and setting in Vermont makes this a great place to stop. It must be really nice in the winter with the fireplace.
The two people I went to dinner with were very impressed by this place, and my reservation might be squarely due to my choice of meal - I had the seafood dish because I didn't want anything with rice or potatoes. Turns out seafood in Vermont is not really worthwhile. So I would avoid that.
The salad was delicious and the wine cooler of the day was fine (blueberry, but I didn't really taste it).
The best part of the meal was definitely the surprise richness of the dessert. I was expecting a portion comparable to what I had eaten as my meal - but we we split 2 desserts between the 3 of us, and that was definitely the majority of my caloric consumption for the evening. The desserts are very rich and incredibly delicious. Next I will skip the seafood and head straight for that.
food is OK, service is really bad
Warm design and very nice interior. The menu is banal, the food just OK. The soup was so salty, the pasta extremely greasy and not special, the salmon was overcooked and dry... The ugly side was the waiters - frustrated women in their 50's, despite their artificial big smiles they were really rude..
I recommend making a reservation well in advance, which helped make our visit to this understandably busy restaurant smooth. I am glad that someone told me that this is a gourmet restaurant because you may not get that impression from the barn-like exterior. The food is wonderful. The service is outstanding and it is an all-around pleasurable dining experience.
