Taqueria San Juan has been in Castroville for some time now. My family and I have dined in and picked up orders to go since they opened. It's the only true Mexican restaurant in Castroville that I know of.

I've ordered chicken fajita taco salads, cheese enchiladas, tortas, barbacoa, chile relleno, breakfast tacos, and quesadillas just to name a few. I don't think we've ever  had a bad meal from this place. All good quality, solid food. Sometimes though, it is a little greasy but not enough to keep me from coming back.

So why only three stars you ask, since the food is always good? Well, its customer service. If you dine in, its fine. Not great but not bad. They're quick and sometimes very attentive and sometimes you wish they were a little more attentive.

Calling in an order, well that gets 1 star if I had to rate it on its own. It's hard to call in an order. They don't ask for your name, a call back number, tell you how long it will take, or give you the total of your order. If you try to give the information anyways they don't bother to write it down or better yet, they hang up on you. Seriously. The conversation goes as such:

    Them: "Taqueria San Juan"
Me: "Yes, I'd like to call an order to be picked up."
Them: "Ok, what [do] you want?"
Me: "I'd like a gordita plate, two barbacoa tacos and chile relleno"
    Them" "Is that all?"
    Me: "Yes"
Them: *click* [hangs up the phone]

So, as happened last time, I get there to pick up the order and find out they are out of chile relleno. It would of been nice if they had asked for a call back number to tell me this and then I wouldn't have had to wait in the restaurant while they cook something else to replace that meal.

So to sum up, the food is good. It's on par with most good San Antonio restaurants but the customer service lacks. So three stars for "A-Ok" is my rating.

This is the real deal. In search of a place to get some breakfast tacos while staying in Castroville, this was the place with all of the pickup trucks in front. I stepped inside and was greeted with that smell that only the best taquerias have. for $3.44 I walked out with two big chorizo, potato, egg and cheese tacos, along with small containers of both their red and green sauce. The red is good, but the green is incredible. The service was quick and friendly, and the food was great. We will be back. There is some other drive through spot that has "Tako" in the name. Skip it in favor of the real deal.

Like all good Mexican restaurants, this place was not big on decor. In fact, the smell was off-putting at first (and went away soon). We had chicken enchiladas, barbacoa puffy tacos, and Monterey chicken. All were fabulous-seriously some of the best I've ever had.

Also, they serve warm, slightly spicy delicious salsa that is nice while waiting for your meal.

Our server was stellar, in that she never left us wanting for anything, complied with all our demands, and wasn't rude.
Definitely a number one for some road stop Mexican food.
