beware... they have put all there effort into making a great looking place! Had some food with 3 other friends that was over cooked and took and hour and half, couldn't have been more disappointed, except for the fact that at the slow place it was we found out the owner was siting next to us. The response we got from when we talked the owner about the poor food and bad service was... "sorry your experience was so poor but please come back and try us again" Thought about and wondered why would I... if bad service and poor food is what i want, with so many other great places in Ely to eat at?
Review Source:Last summer.... We went there and stood at the counter and was ignored. Â Matter of fact, we were the only ones waiting to be seated. Â There wasn't even a person at the counter to even seat us.
The wait staff just walked past us and didn't try to assist us in any way. Â At the very least, they should have acknowledged us so we felt welcome.
What makes this worse is the place wasn't even busy. Â
We left....THE END!
Pleasant, but underwhelming
My partner and I stopped in for brunch on a Sunday and were surprised to one of the few diners there. I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of bacon but was a bit surprised to find the bacon inside the burrito instead. Also, I'm a bit of a bacon lover and was disappointed to because I made it through half of the burrito before finding a piece.
Granted, there was nothing wrong with either the food or least of all the service, but I found the food to be something I could have easily made myself as in there wasn't a lot of special food prep or seasoning evident. I also wanted to try the baklava-like apple potica, but they were all out that day. I would have been happy if the food was even half as good as the service.
This place is awesome. I had the artichoke sandwich and my husband had the garden lake turkey sandwich. They were both yummy so we topped it off with a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie & a side of ice cream. We asked for a box for the pie because we were so full but ended up eating the whole thing anyway because it was so good. I can't wait to go back on a Tuesday and try the apple potica!
Review Source:I remember this same building before it changed into "A Taste of Ely" and it was always too crowded and the way it took orders was weird. But now it has a new owner and a better way of distributing the service. The waitress was great at making sure we were satisfied with our meal and made sure our drinks were always full. My father and my girlfriend had sandwiches which were really good and were presented well. I had a hot sandwich, the mashed potatoes were creamy and the gravy was really tasty. I cleared my plate. My mom wasn't too hungry so she ordered a shake. It was one of the best shakes I have ever tasted.
I highly recommend this restaurant for a great and quick lunch while in Ely. Can't wait to go back here!
This is a great new family restaurant. It's a very cozy Ely feel. Plenty of large tables for big groups as well as small ones tucked in the corner if you just want to have a coffee and surf the internet.
The walleye and wild rice are fantastic! I heard potica was being added to the menu soon too. Can't wait to come back and get dessert next time.
The logo design in the restaurant is striking. Â It's tastefully done and it just pops off the wall, literally! Â Anything with the applewood bacon is absolutely yummy and it made my simple BLT a scrumptious delight. Â Get rid of those nasty tortilla chips! Â Plain and right out of the bag; it doesn't go with the homemade theme at all. Â The stories the guests wrote in the notebooks on the tables was such a cute touch; people are so creative in their picture drawing and poetry writing. Â I also hit their book rack and perused through that during my wait which I thought was pretty cool to have available; I caught up on Ely history. Â Love the homemade desserts. Â I took home extra chocolate chip cookies and blueberry scones. Â Mmm Mmm good! Â The servers are young and would do well to slow down and not look so hurried. Â It's one thing to be busy but composure is everything! Â Â For example, she was asking me how my meal was but her mind and thoughts were on something else as she was already walking away before I could even repy! Â The restaurant is new (est. 2012) Â and I believe with a few tweaks, it would be most superb! Â Great job and I look forward to coming back in a year or so to see the progress.
Review Source:"We're out of clean glasses, so I'll only bring you water if you really want it..." Â And so began our two and a half hour lunch saga at The Taste of Ely. Â
Our party of six waited about 30-40 minutes to be seated on an admittedly busy weekend, hoping that the crowd was a better indicator of this place than the previous Yelp reviews. Lesson learned, guys...never doubt your fellow Yelpers...
After finally getting a table, and being informed of the water glass shortage, it didn't take long for us to figure out that it wasn't just their dishwasher who was running behind....they were also out of non-diet Coca Cola, pickles, and guacamole. Â We had to wait for coffee saucers, napkins arrived in a heap of (thankfully) freshly-laundered linens (sans silverware, that came about 15 minutes later), and nobody seemed to know where the extra toilet paper was (or how to load it into the dispenser). Â
Knowledge about the menu also seemed to be in short supply, as our waitress described their featured Finnish special as "white-looking, with some meat that is...white-looking" (although, as you can see in the picture below...she wasn't too far off base...)
Once our food finally did come, it was good (with the exception of the pale-complexioned special)---but definitely not worth the nearly three hours we spent playing, "What will they be out of next?"
On a more optimistic note, however, the owner/manager did seem genuinely concerned over (and apologetic for) our experience---so hopefully, once this place has a few months under it's belt, things will start to shape up. Â
Until then, I'd skip it unless your looking for ways to burn an afternoon (sans Coke and TP, of course...)
Went here for lunch during Memorial Day weekend 2012. Typical cafe menu with some local favorites and a bit more upscale dinner options, including wine and beer. Breakfast until 11am Mon-Sat and noon on Sunday. Also does take-out. Food was slow getting out and there were a few minor things wrong with our orders, but I think this place just opened and this must have been the first really busy weekend this year, so I'll give them a break, especially because the waitress was helpful and corrected the errors quickly. Â The food and coffee were good.
