Wanna eat like a local? Then eat at tat the bar on Main Street in Thurmont for that local flavor you just can't get at a local McBurger King. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the this place has residents covered. But aside from the food, this place is first and foremost a bar, which has served locals for many years.
On my last visit, I was promptly greeted by Skip, the proprietor and went with an all American classic, a cheeseburger. There were several other patrons at the bar eating as well. A few minutes later one piping hot cheeseburger arrived.
Now keep in mind that this is a local public house, so don't expect to get a Taurasso Burger like you would at Freez King, nor are you getting a fancy Five Dollar Five Guy's chain take out burger. What yo get here is genuine pub food served the pub way--fresh made to order.
The fries were hot, really hot, almost too hot. Of course, I'd much rather have fries hot than cold like what is often the case at many fast food joints. The burger was well seasoned, and with the lettuce over American cheese and mayo, provided the right combination of crispiness without being dry.
The total cost was just a little over $5.oo plus the cost of a drink and a tip. Do note, cash is king in a lot of places still, and here they don't take American Express--they don't take any plastic.
Putting the food aside, what really makes this roadhouse stand out is that this is where the locals long-time town residents eats. One can not help but notice that the costumers who were having lunch in all likeness eat at the Thurmont Bar & Grill several times a week if not daily, and have done so for decades.
This leaves a sense of family between patron and establishment--something you're not going to see at a McBurger King. It is also a good part of the charm, and gives a good sense of what Thurmont is all about.
For anyone who is new to town, or fr the long time residents who just haven't bothered to get out of the housing developments to try the local fare, this would be a good start.
