Excellent food. Â Portions were absolutely huge. Â I somehow managed to convince others to get a bowl of chowder before the meal. Â Big Mistake! Â Chowder was amazing, but had almost no room left for the also amazing meal. Â Beer selection was a little wanting, but I don't think they market themselves as a beer establishment.
Review Source:Everyone has been telling me to come here for breakfast, so I finally made it recently. Overall, it was an excellent experience. The food was quite tasty (though I wish they would get some better coffee) and I love when places use in season ingredients in the specials. (Yay, asparagus brie omelettes!) I later found out I was supposed to order the stuffed french toast, so I guess I'll have to get that next time.
The decor is cool (random instruments on the walls, etc.) and the service was terrific.
The only reason I can't quite give them 5 stars is because they are a tad pricey (just a tad) and I know it can get ridiculously busy. I managed to go early on a weekday morning, but I know it can be difficult to even get in at all during peak breakfast hours.
I will definitely be back when I'm ready to brave the crowds again.
WOW! Take a look at those pics I posted. That Stuffed French Toast is almost enough for me to drive 3.5 hours for no other reason. They have outdoor seating when it's nicer but we sat upstairs and inside; had a bit of a wait but it was worth it. Although reservations are recommended, when we called they said they didn't take reservations. (?) Last time I was in the area they were not open so I'm not sure if they only operate seasonally.
Review Source:Closer to 3 1/2 stars--I rounded up to four stars.
The food here is top-notch. Â When we lived in the Watertown/Fort Drum area before (7 years ago) we came to this restaurant 2 or 3 times, and we just returned for a visit yesterday.
What I love: Â The food. Â This is an area that has an abundance of italian food and sandwich type restaurants. Â I can't count how many restaurants offer chicken parm sandwiches, ruebens, roast beef, etc... Â
Tin Pan Galley has sandwiches for lunch, but they include really unique ingredients like grilled portobello, gouda, grilled apples, honey mustard, herb mayo, etc. Â These are excellent and flavorful sandwiches.
Furthermore, they have a garden seating area complete with a fountain and trees for shade. Â It's a really nice atmosphere.
Where I have to take some points away from Tin Pan Galley is with the service. Â Years ago, we went in for breakfast and the place was just clearing out from a rush. Â We were summarily seated and never acknowledged again. Â I actually flagged someone down and asked if we could get some service. Â The person rudely said that they would find our server. Â No one ever showed up, and we left.
I can forgive a restaurant for one day of bad service.
Yesterday, our server wasn't BAD so much as absent a lot of the time. Â It was only irritating because there were about five servers and a hostess on duty who also ignored us. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, and all those servers were just sort of standing to the side doing nothing. Â I flagged the hostess down and requested she ask our server for refills. Â I've worked in restaurants, and everywhere I've worked it was common knowledge that we were to keep an eye on EVERYONE's table.
I think this staff needs a bit more training or supervision.  Anyone who works in a restaurant in Sackett's Harbor is lucky to be working there.  The restaurants are quality, and the area is a huge draw for people from all around.  They should all deserve to work there  and deserve to receive the extra tips from working in Sacketts.
EAT HERE FOR BREAKFAST.
I had the special: chocolate french toast with fresh strawberries and a delicious cream sauce and it was amazing! I had never seen chocolate french toast, but when I heard it I knew I had to have it, and it did not disappoint. If you're more of the savory breakfast kind of person, my husband had the huevos rancheros: also amazing! There wasn't an overload of egg and lack of beans and peppers, like so many that we have had. A+ for both items! It's a bit pricey but worth the quality, however next time we go I'll probably stay away from the $7 mimosas and bloody marys.
Several visits on this trip. Â We have sampled: Â Asian seared ahi tuna salad, green tomato salad, homemade garlic potatoe chips w blue cheese, onion & garlic soup au gratin, blucheescake salad, small scallops plate, Cesaer salad, lobster bisque. Â Service can be a bit slow, but very professional. Â Don't be in a hurry. Enjoy the meal & the patio.
Review Source:Bring your appetite and some friends to share plates at brunch! The food is amazing and the servings are HUGE. Â There are so many appealing things on the menu, I'd highly recommend ordering a few things and sharing.
Outdoor patio seating is very charming and you will see lots of friends and neighbors greeting each other, it's got a nice local feel to it even though it does seem like people from all around come to Sackets just for Tin Pan.
Have been for dinner and drinks as well, outdoor bar is nice and they have live music some nights which is fun. Â The dinner food was good but the breakfast/brunch menu is just so outstanding that the dinner menu can't compare. Â On it's own, it'd be great but once you've been here for breakfast, I can guarantee you'll want to go back.
Decided to give this place another try because my wife wanted their stuffed French toast. Again, this time I timed it, we waited 51 minutes for our food. I was given the excuse that the kitchen manager was gone an a 25 person table had come in earlier that morning. Those are horrible excuses. If you're kitchen can't function or get food out faster when one person is gone, you need new cooks.. Â A 25 person table shouldn't slow a restaurant down for hours. I've worked in kitchens and waited tables. No where, no matter what is waiting 51 minutes for food acceptable. Especially when it was two orders of French toast, two eggs, and 4 strips of bacon. RIDICULOUS.. If the food wasn't so horrible at most other restaurants in this area, this place would probably be closed..
Review Source:Reservations highly recommended. TPG was full as everywhere else in town was pretty empty.
While the food is pretty good the kitchen has a real problem getting it to the table at anything like hot, or even warm. Service is good, the view and facility are lovely, and it's a great place to share hor d'oeurves and a few drinks. You must be tolerant to have a full meal.
All things considered, we'll go back but order off the appetizer menu and share.
Loved, loved, L O V E D it! Â We made reservations for 9 on the incredibly beautiful patio. Â Reminscent of a garden in Savannah, the patio is both fun and romantic. Â The live music is fun. Â The lighting and foliage romantic. Â The real story is the food. Â A fantastic, yet simple menu. Â We tried the scallops with sweet potato/lobster cake, the NY strip with mash, and the jerk salmon with ginger rice. Â Every bite was a treat. Service was good. Â Cannot wait to come back and try the breakfast.
Review Source:A very enjoyable dining experience. Enjoyed the beautiful weather on the patio, with live music. Although a bit on the pricey side, food was very good. Jerk salmon on ginger rice was flavorful, as was filet mignon served on lobster mashed potatoes. Outstanding and refreshing salad with blueberries, greens, feta and sunflower seeds. Friendly and attentive service. A definite recommendations for those visiting the area and looking for a nice dinner outing.
Review Source:My parents love dining here and were excited to bring me up during a visit. We sat outside in a very pretty garden setting, close to the setup of the band that would be playing later that evening. The place was packed (we had a reservation) but our server promptly came over and took our drink order.
The menu is varied with numerous mouth-watering dish descriptions. I ordered the seared duck breast with cherry balsamic glaze, my dad ordered the New Orleans pork tenderloin medallions and my mom ordered the hacienda steak with chimichurri sauce.
My duck was fabulous. Perfectly tender, medium-rare medallions of duck with a three-cheese whipped mashed potatoes, fingerling carrots in a to-die-for cherry balsamic reduction sauce. My dad loved his pork dish. My mom unfortunately got a tough steak (it was very chewy) but she liked the sauce and its accompaniments.
We split a slice of New York cheesecake topped with fresh sliced strawberries and a mango sauce. Was the right combination of creamy and sweet.
The band started playing around 8pm and was a great addition to an already enjoyable experience. I highly recommend this establishment for its food and its ambience.
I'd been here a few times for breakfast and it was great. Â Hands down my favorite restaurant in the area. Â Last time I we was on a weekday, I believe, so the was no brunch, so I was a bit worried, but their lunch is ALSO great.
Agreed with previous reviews, on nice summer days, if you're not there early there will probably be a line, but that's because you get to sit out in their pretty courtyard and eat really good food.
Also the neighborhood is beautiful and quiet, so after you eat you can go on a nice walk around the historical landmarks by the water.
We loved going here when we lived at Fort Drum. We tried their dinner once for mothers day and it was amazing. We would go there once every so often for the Sunday Brunch, as long as we got there by 9:30 as the wait was pretty intense. The BLT breakfast sandwich is a must, and the beef tenderloin benedict was also fantastic. We would get both and trade half for half. The food is creative and delicious, we tried a few different things and were always impressed. The one thing I wish I knew ahead of time is to wait in the line for the hostess, since it is a bit confusing. Â I wasn't sure if the line was waiting to talk to the hostess or if I was supposed to work my way to the stand through the crowd and find her. Overall a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday, getting brunch and walking along the water.
Review Source:If you're looking for brunch done right Tin Pan Galley is the place. Their dinners are worth mentioning as well, but bunch is their specialty. Their food is a delicious weekend treat. Especially in the spring and summer when you can enjoy the large portions of stuffed french toast, crab eggs benedict, lemon-poppy seed pancakes and more of the like outside on the patio. It's a simple garden-like romantic setting whether you're there for brunch or dinner. Tin Pan Galley is arguably one of the best restaurants in this area (there really aren't many elegant places to eat here). I also love that this restaurant is located on the main street in Sackets Harbor. You can walk off your large, delicious meal by window shopping and strolling along the water and around the battlefield in town.
Downfalls: Be warned- due to how popular this restaurant is you have to arrive early enough to be first in line (especially for brunch). The inside of Tin Pan Galley isn't all that spacious, so it fills up even quicker when it gets chilly.
Gosh darn it - I forgot to write my review right after my scrumptious breakfast (let's be honest, brunch, b/c my lazy butt was sleeping in). Â So this review will be from memory but oooh the memories... *salivating*
Somehow my friend and I lucked out and arrived right when a few parties were on their way out so we got seated right away. Â The decoration was interesting, a mix of celestial along with seasonal: stars and I'm sure a moon, as well as snowflakes... everywhere. Â Wait staff are casual (dress) and friendly. Â Menu is surprisingly bigger than what I expected - with decent prices (for the area). Â I ended up getting the special, something with an English muffin topped with ham, egg, cheese, hollandaise sauce (IIRC), and a side of hash brown. Â Oh my goodness. Â It was heavenly.
Celestial decoration - it's all starting to make sense now.
I'm sure butter was used - it's gotta be - and everything was delicious. Â The English muffin soaked in all the flavor from the ham and egg on top. Â The sauce really added an amazing touch to the whole sandwich. Â It's...buttery. Â That's the best description I can give you. Â And I'm one of those people who do not like butter. Â I can't stand the fatty taste of butter. Â But this sandwich had all the flavor without having that fatty taste.
Can't wait to return to try something else.
I visited Tin Pan for the first time this summer and was quite impressed. We went on a Sunday late-morning and although the wait to eat outside was long, we managed to get a spot inside immediately (for 4). Â The service was fast and friendly and the food was amazing. I ordered stuffed french toast (unaware of their notoriety) and my fiancee ordered a custom omelet. So good! And the price was definitely reasonable. We will be going back for sure!
Review Source:I've definitely had better.
My mom and I came here for her birthday dinner with a couple of family friends. We had been warned that the service and food delivery is a little slow. That was a little bit of an understatement. It took our server 25 minutes to even come over to our table to take our wine order. It then took another 30 minutes to actually get her to come back with the bottle....which was the wrong bottle. Fast forward another 20 minutes and she comes back with the correct bottle of wine and to take our food order. I was already exhausted at this point.
The food took over an hour to get to our table. It was beautifully presented, but cold. We would have walked out at this point if there was anywhere  else decent in the town to dine at. But alas, Sackets Harbor is not, nor will ever be, the culinary capital of the world.
The only saving grace this restaurant has is it's atmosphere. The outside dining area is beautiful with grape leaves climbing up the walls of the early 19th century building. There was also a hoppin dance floor and busy bar. Most of the people populating these areas were wasted as they probably had to wait 2 hours even for their appetizers to arrive.
I don't mean to sound like a snob, but this place would never survive in a big city. The food is there, but the logistics and soul of the place is....not.
Perhaps this is worth a shot if you go earlier in the dinner shift and have lots of time. Sorry New York.
The breakfast is good enough where I'm fairly certain I'm going back this morning for two days in a row.
I had the huevos racheros which was excellent. Some sour cream or avocado would have put it over the top.
But that's not the standout here. My girlfriend had the stuffed french toast. Wow. It was pretty rich but it was some of the most delicious french toast I think I've ever had. Not overly sweet. But don't get it twisted - it's about as sweet as breakfasts come.
Not to mention, it was a beautiful day and the patio they have is really nice. Even though it's a really large patio, the way it's set up gives it an intimate feel. Maybe because there are lots of large trees dangling throughout.
Seriously - I might be going back right now. Really, very good.
I got here too late for breakfast but right in time for lunch. I sat at the bar since I was by myself traveling for work. Probably better anyways since there was a massive line waiting for a table. This place had the most stunning patio for summer outside dining. Tons of shade, foliage and plant life was booming with lots of colors and just a great atmosphere out in the open.
I had the cubano sandwhich. I love a good cuban and this one was awesome. Pork was nice and sweet, lots of cheese and ham was really good too. Tried a few local beers on tap and the waitress kept up a good conversation and was very nice.
I wish I had got here in time for breakfast since that is why I had taken the journey to sackets harbor (but got lost) and ended up getting there right as breakfast was ending. This was an overall fantastic meal and prepper me for a few hours of beer drinking at the nearby brewery and Hops Spot. Great little town with lots of traffic and everybody having a good time enjoying the outdoors.
If anyone has or has had the breakfast chimichanga please let me know how awesome it was because thats what i wouldve ordered!!!!!!
After hearing so much about their stuffed french toast, I had to come and try it out myself. Â I had a side order of side french toast supreme. Â I was definitely a little hesistant after I ordered it because i was afraid it was going to be sickening sweet, but so glad it wasn't! Â The maple butter was delicious, the cheese filling was light and overall, best french toast i've ever had!! Â My friend and brother-in-law both ordered the BLT and it was huge! Â My friend also ordered a side of their pumpkin pancake with cinnamon butter and it tasted exactly like pumpkin pie.
This place definitely gets packed, but totally worth the wait.
Man this place is really good. I have not had breakfast here yet but the lunch alone was great. Had a rueben. Ive also been here for the bar. I love how its located outside so in the summer time its amazing. The bartender was really nice and friendly and we had a blast coming up with random drinks on our phone apps and seeing if she could make them. She thought it was hilarious.
Review Source:Tin Pan has been a staple for Sackets a number of years now. Â It's a fine breakfast spot on a warm, sunny day. Â The outside dinning is very special as you're surrounded with historic buildings. Â Lunch and dinner are also special as the owner, at times, will come out with his friends and play their musical instruments and really entertain the crowd. Â It's a great spot. Â One not to pass by. Â And the food is pretty good too.
Review Source:I don't remember what I ate here. All I remember was that it was good. It is located in the "down town" which is literally one block long (not even).
My brother is stationed in Ft. Drum (well, he's in Iraq now but he'll go back there once he comes back in Nov) and when I went to visit him up there, I do mean UP state New York, he couldn't wait to take me to this restaurant.
I don't think they take reservations, you just walk up to the front of the line at the gate of the patio and give them your name. They will give you an hour wait. You then can go to the other end of the down town (about 3 stores down) and grab yourself some coffee.
For some reason, everyone sorta "dress up" to come here (even sat/sun mornings.) Expect to see a lot of sundresses in bright colors and "boating" clothes b/c a lot of rich boating people suppose to hang about. I wore jeans. I think I was the only one. But it's OK b/c I had a cute shirt on and b/c I'm cute. j/k
I had both French toast and Omelet (meaning stole food from my brother's plate) and both were very good. But I'm not quite sure if it was good in comparison to other restaurants nearby (ummm what restaurants?) or b/c of the wait, or b/c of the anticipation but it was good. Unlike the post below, I'll probably go back next time I'm up in Sackets Harbor.
Never went inside but the patio is so pretty. First day, I sat directly under the sun so be advised.
Tin Pan Galley - if you find yourself in upstate NY (by which I mean way upstate, near the Canadian border, at Fort Drum, or on the Northeast side of Lake Ontario), your trip is not complete without a stop at Tin Pan.
The town of Sackett's Harbor is quaint, and nice in its own right. Â A historic battlefield, on the lake, and full of shops, antique stores, and restaurants. Â However, look around on a weekend morning, and you'll see a line in one place - Tin Pan. Â It goes until the afternoon, and then it still has people eating there at night.
To be fair, the restaurant is not that big - in the winter, you've only got a few tables inside. Â Spring, summer, and fall dining are the best, on the outside patio.
The breakfasts there are incredible. Â I can't decide what is better - the gourmet omelettes or the stuffed french toast (though for good stuffed french toast also try Zaftig's in Boston). Â Prices are extremely reasonable, and the service and atmosphere nice.
I was also there for a wedding reception, and found the catered food also to be superb.
Make the time, if in Sackett's, or nearby. Â You won't regret it.
Although it has been awhile I consider Tin Pan Galley to be one of the best places ever to have breakfast. We waited almost 45 minutes on a Saturday morning and it was worth it. Eating outside, under huge trees - it doesn't get any better.
Great coffee and the food is incredible. I wish I could remember what we ordered but I would go back tomorrow if I had the chance.
Sackets Harbor is a historic location in upstate New York (west of Watertown and Ft Drum). We spent a lot of time walking around the little town and also got to look at the old buildings (military houses, hospital, etc.). Â Great place in the summer (which is short).
Ulysses Grant (as in General and President) served here as a 2LT.
This was an ok place. Waitress was friendly. We had homemade garlic with baguette, mushroom risotto, bleu cheese burger, rainbow trout. The mushroom risotto was salty, blue cheese burger was lean and overdone (i ordered it rare) and the rainbow trout was eh.
For dessert, we had creme brulee (which was good) and macadamia chocolate cake (eh). Coffee was really weak. I was disappointed considering I was reading all the raves and reviews on this place. Maybe I caught them on an off day. Wouldn't rush back there the next time I'm in town.
