Terrible! I first went last year, overpriced beers and bad food.... Tried it again this weekend and the service was so bad I couldn't even get a drink! The bar wasn't even busy and when I attempted to order a beer at the bar, the dopey bartender just stared at me as I was ordering, then walked away and started filling the coolers with ice! To top it off, I actually came back to try again the next day and the same thing happened!! I don't know if they only serve locals or what but this takes bad service to a new level. I will not return.
Review Source:This place is TERRIBLE. Wish we had read reviews first.
In short:
This is a BAR not a restaurant. The night's event was cancelled, it was cold, no music, quiet and uncomfortable. Bathrooms were disgusting. Orders were screwed up. Food was just bad. Service was a joke.
Details:
Service was awful. Waiter, doubling as the bartender knew NOTHING about the food or how to wait tables. 3 out of 4 of us ordered beers, 2 of us got beers and the waiter forgot about the third. After we found him, we reminded him, but even after that, he walked by us again and remembered he was supposed to be getting that 3rd drink.
Ordering was a joke. Waiter took our orders while constantly erasing and rewriting on his pad. 2 veggie burgers with fries, 2 portabella burgers with sweet potato fries.
A minute later, "sorry, we have no sweet potato fries".
5 minutes later..."sorry, we have no portabella mushrooms either". He recommended the Turkey Burger because "A lot of people get it".
20 minutes later, the food comes. Order with fries came with NO fries, but with mashed potatoes instead. A veggie burger with sauteed onions and mushrooms came with nothing but a small pile of what looked like burned and greasy onion strands. Another order with NO mayo requested, came with mayo. We brought this to his attention. 10 minutes later he returned with some fries. He FAILED to return with the onions and mushrooms that were to be included (for an addition charge). It was getting so ridiculous, we didn't bother. 20 minutes later, the turkey burger with no mayo came. Everyone else was done eating.
The food was bad. Veggie burger is just fried unidentified potato/grits/pureed vegetables? The turkey burger is definitely something from a frozen food section of a 7/11. The fries were standard bar/frozen fries. Mashed potatoes were...mashed up potatoes, with skins, thick and flavorless. That's it.
The Tommy Doyle's house beer is flat and terrible.
STAY AWAY. There are far better choice within WALKING distance.
Couldn't find anything else open and stopped in. We were the only people there but others arrived soon after and the service has been abysmal. They are understaffed but still. Been here an hour and still no food. Should have left before we ordered.
Update: Food arrived. The kids chicken fingers and fries were good, as were the sweet potato fries. The wrap and reuben were not good. At all. Never again.
Maybe I went there on a bad day.
On the plus side, the chicken wings were very good.
On the negative: the service was poor, and the cabbage tasted like vinegar.  The food and drinks  took forever to arrive.  There were less than a dozen people there, and most had eaten before we sat down.
More of a night club than an Irish pub. Not a lot of Irish food on the menu. Service at the bar at night is terrible. Wait 20 minutes to order while they cater to everyone at the center of the bar or their close friends. They have ac units on the ceiling and fans directly under them so that any condensation rains down on you. When a dj plays it is so loud that you can't hear the person next to you even if they are shouting in your ear. At least when a band plays they are in their own room so that you can hear them through the entire bar, but it is only loud in their room. I Luke the place, and will always go in, but I.ly when there isn't a cover charge. There are 5 bars within sight that have better menus and don't charge a cover fee to get in.
Review Source:My wife and I went for lunch and had a great time. Â The service was quick and friendly. Â The atmosphere was comfortable with the music playing at a nice volume. Â The french oniion soup was great. Â I had a burger (which comes with a free beer) that was cooked just how I ordered it. Â And at the end of it all we got to play a game of pool. Â Fun place!
Review Source:I wish that I actually looked at the reviews on Yelp before heading to this place with my wife. Â It was terrible.
It was a nice day, so we decided to eat outside for lunch. Â Was about 10 people total there and one waitress to deal with them all. Â Service was spotty.
The BBQ wings came out and I was expecting them to be tossed in the sauce like you would get at any other place. Â No, they were dry and came with a little cup of BBQ sauce for the full order of wings. Â
Got a lobster roll sandwich and it was really overpriced and not very good. Â It was OVERLY dressed with mayo and it had a weird pinkish hue. Â There were no big chunks of lobster and that bothered me due to them charging 'market price' for it. Â When we got the check, the lobster roll was not there, but a steak dish. Â It took awhile to get the server back over to discuss, but she said it was the same price as the lobster roll. Â Would make sense if she said that when bringing the bill so we don't think they screwed something up.
Terrible food and experience in my eyes. Â Not worth visiting this place.
The food wasn't bad. The trouble began when we got the check. Our cute Irish waitress accidentally charged us full price for the two specials we ordered. We didn't notice until we were leaving and brought it to the attention of the bar tender since our waitress was busy. She was extremely patronizing and told us it was our fault for not alerting the waitress to the fact that what we ordered was the daily special. She told us not to make that mistake next time. Luckily, there won't be a next time.
Review Source:Cozy, unpretentious barroom and very average on all counts. The food was good. I had a turkey burger that was very good, moist and perfectly cooked but the clam chowder took forever to come out and was room temp. It actually tasted good but not as good when hot as it should be. Service was friendly but slow (disappeared often) and this was at noon in July and we were the only patrons which I thought odd.
Review Source:This is really too bad. Â Tommy Doyle's started off when it opened as a pretty good place to get fairly authentic Irish food. Â Bangers and Mash, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Stew were all quite good. Â You could get a properly poured Guinness, then something changed. Â Not sure what exactly. Â Went back recently. Â The menu was all different, fewer if any real Irish food choices, got my Guinness back 2 seconds after I ordered it. Â Anyone that knows anything about pouring Guinness knows that's wrong. Â The food was awful. Â Small portions and cold. Â I got the Shepard's Pie . Â My wife tried the Corned Beef that was ice cold. I think the management wants to be a "20's something" Bar, not a true Irish Pub. Â If you want to be a Pub, be a Pub. If you want to be an authentic Irish eating establishment, you need to take a trip "across the pond". Â Good luck.
Review Source:I've been here once with the family, and the experience was decidedly mixed. Â I'd be willing to give it another shot.
Pros:
+ The food was actually pretty tasty. Â I had french onion soup which was yummy, oniony goodness. Â The hubby and I also split some curry fries which were made with steak fries (my favorite). Â They were delicious.
+ Smithwicks and Guinness...mmmmmmmmm
+ There were a bunch of legit Irishmen at the bar watching soccer and laughing hysterically at their own jokes. They unwittingly helped support the Irish pub ambiance.
Cons:
+ Service was extremely spotty. Â There was like one waitress in the whole place. Â She was good, but there's only so much one person can do. Â We waited a long time to be waited on, then a long time to get our food, and finally, our check.
+ Our table had a loose leg so it was a bumpy meal.
+ I was the only one who didn't go to the bathroom, but my family all described it as smelling like a urine soaked subway station with dim lighting where you likely would be stabbed.
It would seem that the place is under new management and trying to get back to its days of glory.  The new manager,  Shawn (sp?) is always out and engaging patrons. I came in a tried the burger and beer special.  The burger was outstanding, made with all the fixings.... Great beer selection,  clean and friendly staff.  This place likes its regulars but  appreciates all!  Glad to see the changes and I'm sure it will pay off.  Looking forward to St. Patrick's Day there!
Review Source:After spending way too long on a bus to Hyannis from Boston my friends and I were hungry! Â I got the turkey burger which was really good. Â Turkey burgers can really be hit or miss- they can come out dry and flavorless, but this was not the case for this one. Â It had provolone cheese and a chipotle sauce on it. Â I also liked that it was on ciabatta roll so the bread stood up to the burger which was a good size. Â The burger came with steak fries and they were crispy. Â
Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating and so it made for a nice experience. This place is a nice pub that while isn't as fancy as some of the other restaurants on Main Street, the food was good and the service was awesome.
Unfortunately I was forced to give Tommy D's 1 star. Â Hopefully this review helps you avoid this place.
I have been going to Hyannis for years to celebrate America's Birthday. There are really only three bars to go to; Trader Ed's, BBC and Tommy Doyle's.
In setting this up I had been at Tommy Doyle's two nights before, paid a cover, and got in. Â We had a pretty decent time. Â We decided to go back the night of July 4 and all took separate cabs, mine being the last to show up. Â As the first person up in line I hand my DC ID to the bouncer who looks like pint size version of Mr. Clean with glasses who was probably thinking about how many squat thrusts he was going to do at the gym the next day. Â He looks it over for 40 seconds, bending it, flipping it over, and picking at it. Â Come on guy, don't ruin my ID in the process.
I'm 26, but look like I am much younger, but I look exactly the same in my picture since it is only a few months old. Â The bouncer then asks me if I have everything else and I proceed to produce a Debit Card and Credit Card with my name and signature that match my ID as well as my AAA Card with my name and my BlueCrossBlueShield medical card. Â He just looks at them in my hand goes, "I don't like it". Â Really? Â It took you that long after asking for other identification that you didn't even look at to decide that. Â Thanks.
I tried to reason with him because all my friends are in the bar asking him to scan it because I am well over 21 which he said they don't have a scanner. Â All I wanted to do was spend money at your bar on overpriced drinks and listen to the terrible reggae band from two nights before, why is that so hard. Â His only answer was, "I just don't like it". Â Finally I just asked to speak with the manager.
What a baby gorilla this guy was that lumbered out. Â Looked like he shouldn't even be allowed in the bar and was out past his bedtime. Â After asking him to look over my ID or scan it he said, "No, if my guy here doesn't like it then I don't like it." Â
At this point I pulled out all I had left. Â My friends earlier that day had met some girls at the beach who they invited out, but were not 21 so they were using fake IDs. Â After I explained this to them their only answer was, "We liked theirs, not yours."
It didn't take too much after that. Â As soon as everyone got word that I wasn't allowed in they immediately left, and apparently there was no one inside anyway and came to BBC and we had a much better night. Â
My advice is DO NOT go to Tommy Doyle's if you want to have a good time because you probably won't get in. Â If you have a MA ID and want to take a gamble go ahead, but if you have an out of state ID just go to BBC until they get a scanner.
My family and I were looking for a nice pub that had a decent burger. Â We went to Tommy Doyle's and our quest was not fulfilled. Â First let me say the service was very good. Â A young waitress that looked off the boat from Shannon served us. Â Very nice.
Now the food. Â We ordered burgers. Â They tasted that were not cooked fresh (just heated up) they were burnt on the outside. Â It seemed that they ran out of tomatoes (?). Â The cheese and bacon on my burger were hardly visible.
You would think burgers would be easy. Â But not here.
What a nightmare.
I spent the evening of Friday, 7/8/11 at Tommy Doyle's with a group of 12 that were spending the long weekend in Hyannis for my future brother-in-law's bachelor party. Â We had set on that venue as we all had experience with the Harvard Square establishment since most of us hail from the Boston area.
Ten of us proceeded to pay the $5 cover charge and head in - no issues with that, live band, have to take care of them. Â I received a text from a friend in line that was being denied access. Â Not for being impaired, mind you, but for presenting a duplicate CT license that he was using in the interim while the state issued him another to replace his lost one. Â Perfectly valid form of identification, or so we thought. Â Not only was he being denied access, but we had to deal with a petulant bouncer. Â I asked if we had any recourse, and this short, bald gentlemen who, and I'm not making this up, was drinking a protein shake while working the door, gave us condescending, insulting answers. Â I get it, you decide who comes in and who doesn't. Â The thing is, the level of professionalism this man displayed was embarrassing and frankly, the worst I've ever seen (from someone who gets out enough to see a few bouncers and door people). Â The best part was when I was heading in to go get the rest of the party to tell them what was up, I opened the door a tad too aggressively for the bouncer's liking and was promptly accosted from behind and told I could join my friends outside. Â Fantastic.
The rest of the group left after finishing their drinks and tried to ask the bouncer why he was being so difficult. Â He was extremely confrontational, to the point where the groom feared for his safety. Â Not cool, uncalled for, simply unacceptable. Â We proceeded to the BBC and enjoyed the rest of our evening - my favorite part being not getting any garbage from the doorman when presented the duplicate license.
Oh, and the 10 minutes I spent inside Tommy Doyles were uninspiring at best. Â Seems like a meathead/fratboy type crowd that is overly aggressive and looking for a reason to fight. Â At least we know where the bouncer gets it from.
Honestly, I'm not frequenting the Harvard Square Tommy Doyles again, as I in no way want to benefit a business that treats patrons with so little respect. Â I will steer business away from them, at that. Â Avoid at all costs.
I'll give anyone 5 Stars if they have a Full Bagpipe Refalia on hand!! Â
Thats right, was there on 2/17 to meet some local Techi's and too my surprise an entire room full of bagpipes and drums! Â They were awesome! Â I can't comment on the food, although I do here it is pretty good and the prices aren't bad, but the entertainment was fantastic! Â I hope to see them hosting an evening like that again sometime soon, I'll be the first one there if so.
