Quality food. Â The scallop appetizers were perfection (and I feel most scallops are not of high quality). Â The salmon and seabass were both amazing. Â The buffalo was of high quality but was overcooked (I asked for the rare side of medium rare and half of each piece was well done). Â The peppersteak was very tasty. Â Great atmosphere too.
Review Source:Not enough can be said about this place.
The ambiance is unique and breathtaking. The service is superb. The food is to die for. I've even eaten next to Robert Redford. Awesome!
The pepper steak with mango chutney is what I order every time. You just cant go wrong. I have also tasted some of the most unique things here. Dandelion salad with pickled blueberries and melon. Sounds weird. Separately, the taste is odd. Put put it together and your taste buds go to heaven.
The Tree Room is a dining experience. I have reserved it for special events in my life and I have never been disappointed. It's worth every penny.
Wonderful experience. Â The amuse bouche was quite enjoyable, tomato bisque was great, fresh pressed olive oil was amazing. Â
The pepper steak is great, what they're known for. Â However, the crispy sea bass (one of the new seasonal dishes) was spectacular. Â
Great service, exceptional wine list, we will be back.
This is the first time I have written a review on Yelp. This meal moved me to do so. I have been in Salt Lake for two years and this is the first meal from start to finish that was done right. I come from a city where culinary is highly prized, so it has been hard to find a meal in Salt Lake that truly was great. This was that meal. I started with the Scallops over a cream corn sauce, which was incredible. I almost licked the plate to get the reminder of the sauce. My wife's beet salad, was incredible (and I hate beets). I got the house (Sundance salad), which was nothing special and consisted of fresh greens, house dressing, and some candied pecans. But was done very well. My wife had the Heirloom tomato salad, which was more creative. For my main course, I got the peppered steak on buttermilk potatoes and a mango chutney. At first, I didn't know how to accept the Chutney. It was a bit sweet, and I love sweet tastes. After I cut a piece of the steal, mixed with potatoes and chutney, it was a wonderful combination. The meat was perfectly prepared, for me this is medium-rare. Finally dessert. I am not a big dessert fan. We got a decadently rich chocolate cake and berries crème anglaise. They were very good, but nothing out of this world. But good enough to end the meal.
Overall, an incredible experience. From start to finish. From food to service. My wife loves Log Haven because it is close and the atmosphere is "romantic". We go every couple of months. Unfortunately the food is seriously lacking. The prices are comparable. For a romantic evening out or for an incredible dining experience, I highly recommend the Tree Room. It is worth the drive, or if vacationing at Sundance - just do it.
Words cannot express the explosion of unique flavors the chef puts into the entrees. Every dining experience at The Tree Room is memorable! We hiked the resort and ended the day with a 5-star plus experience with amazing food, wine and Tree Room staff. The Elk special and the Crispy Sea Bass was prepared to perfection. Amy from The Tree Room was extremely friendly and accommodating! Thanks for yet again, another incredible experience in the beautiful Tree Room.
Review Source:Spent New Year Eve here, and made the mistake of ordering the tasting menu. The server made the mistake of comparing this place to French Laundry. (Say what now?) The service was actually great, and the restaurant was super cozy. Posh in a Sundance way. But man, the food. What a mess. Wrong temperatures, overcooked, way oversalted and somehow also underspiced. My bf and I actually started laughing, we just wanted to get through the meal and get out of there. And they wanted us out, too! Tables cleared and lights up at 11:45 pm... on New Year's Eve. Oh, well. To quote my bf, "worst $600 meal of my life."
Review Source:We when to The Tree Room. I told the waiter, we want something different. After returning from the kitchen he said "The chef would be happy to prepare for a you a five course meal. Each course will be something the chef has been experimenting with to possible put on the menu in the future." Sounded perfect. I don't recall the dished but our server took the time to explain what were about to eat. Most of it we liked. Our server actually took the comment back to the chef and subsequent dishes were altered to better fit our tastes. After the meal we met the chef and complemented him on his service and skills.
While you can't always get this kind of personal attention for a Chef it was well worth the extra cost and time.
I ordered the duck breast that also came with a confit, and while the breast was tasty, the confit was a little chewy.
My boyfriends father ordered the pepper steak which I got to try a bite of and was absolutely delicious, and the bf ordered the boar rack and it was tender and juicy.
Several amuse bouche at the start end and middle of the meal and they were all superb and unexpected.
If I was in Utah again, and had something to celebrate this would be the where.
I love the tree room. Â The food and ambiance and service all are all outstanding. They are gluten-free friendly - kitchen and staff are knowledgeable. Â I give them 4 stars only for not having many vegetarian options for non-fish lovers. Â A wee bit pricey but worth it for a special occasion. Very romantic!
Review Source:My fiancé and I went to dinner at The Tree Room to celebrate our engagement. Even though we were a little late for our reservation we were seated immediately. We loved the ambiance and how it was decorated, very romantic. The service was superb, and every one was excited for us and our engagement. Very friendly and helpful service staff. They even gave us a free dessert to congratulate us. Although it wasn't cheap it was worth every dollar!
Review Source:Have you ever been on vacation and gone out to dinner and had to prep yourself, "Dorthy we're not in NYC anymore, lower those standards girl"?
Well you do NOT need to do that at The Tree Room. Â This restaurant earned a solid 5 stars from me and our group!! Â Thank you Robert Redford!
Like C.H., my date of dining was almost a year ago when I was on a ski trip, so apologies for holding out! Â The lady we were renting a house from suggested The Tree Room and said she had dreams about the Pepper Steak - so naturally we had to order that. Â They have a relatively limited menu, but that is because everything on there is cooked to perfection. Â The space inside is beautiful and looked like there were even outdoor seats for the summer. Â It is very pricey so save for a special occasion!!
Date of dining: Â 9/2011: So this review took me awhile to write, but it is rare that the quality of the food, the level of service, and the price match up well enough that I would make a return visit to a full service restaurant.
Admittedly, I have very high expectations when I am paying top dollar for food. Â I expect outstanding service, nice atmosphere, top quality ingredients, and a kitchen staff that understand how to utilize seasonings to make quality food taste amazing while being somewhat inventive. If any one of those items are missing, I patiently hope the restaurant dies a slow painful death for wasting my money and crushing my dreams.
So, in short, the waiter was great and made us feel like we were the only people dining in the restaurant (we weren't), and when he learned it was a special occasion he quickly worked with the kitchen staff to make it very special with a customized dessert.
The appetizer and desserts were amazing. Â The Wagyu steak was great and the sauce was a great complement. The fish entree lacked inspiration, but was okay for those who enjoy bland food (yea, I know it sounds odd, but my wife actually likes bland food). The vegetables were over seasoned and had a lasting aftertaste that wouldn't disappear until the richness of the desserts whisked away the offending over seasoning.
Ultimately, what made it a great place worthy of five stars? Great atmosphere, top-shelf service, quality ingredients, amazing appetizer and desserts, and reasonably okay entrees. I expected this to be a treat for my wife while being another painful and failed attempt at trying an overrated restaurant, and I was pleasantly surprised. I plan to return to celebrate many special occasions, but there is one hostess/manager to avoid (see below)
UPDATE
2012 return trip: Another trip to celebrate the same special occasion, but this time we never made it to a table. The hostess and/or manager was rude and oddly unaware of general information about the restaurant (reservations, busy times, seating). She should not be in the front of the house greeting guests unless the Tree Room is starting a new ironic niche of sadistic and ostensibly terrible service to draw customers that find the shear irony of terrible service a draw in and of itself.
The room is very nicely furnished and rustic which suits the surroundings.
The service was good; but here were a couple of incidents: Â 1) Â We were served the wrong starter course - they corrected the mistake; but then did not tell the chef to delay the start of the main course. Â Made us feel rushed. 2) Â We had to ask for a refill on the bread. Â NOTE: Â The Sundance Roll was the best of the entire meal.
Our entrees were ok (Steelhead and Bison Steak) - but nothing that special.
Considering the price we paid I would not ever return.
AMAZING!
We had the pleasure of celebrating my MIL's 70th Birthday with a small group of 8 at The Tree Room last night. Â The staff, service and food were impeccable. Â It was a surprise for her, she thought it was just the 4 of us, her my FIL, my husband and myself. Â As we entered the hostess politely asked if we would mind waiting in the library while our table was prepared. Â As MIL entered the library(where the had arranged our dinner party) she had a great surprise of the other 2 couples that would be joining us. Â The private room was not requested but arranged by the staff at The Tree Room. As the group was mingling and taking pictures the staff quietly poured/served wine. Â It was very nice to have time to chat and catch up with all the guests without being rushed to take our seats at the table. Â
Once we sat down and settled in for a fabulous meal our waitor Tyler came in and formally greeted/introduced himself. Â He was spectacular, he really made the experience comfortable and relaxed for all the guests. Â
As a vegetarian I did pass on the red meat amuse-bouche the thinly sliced extremely red meat placed in front of me had NO appeal! Â But my husband loved it!
I had the heirloom tomato salad to start. Â Really good but how can you do tomato's and mozzerella wrong! Â My husband enjoyed the Shrimp and grits. Â The grits were not your typical southern grits they had rich bacon flavor.
For an entree the Steelhead was amazing. Â It had a soy glaze but not to heavy as to overpower the generous filet. Â My husband had the pepper steak that has been on the menu for MANY years and he did say it was possibly the best he had ever had. Â Everyone was very pleased with their entree and the portions are appropriate so that you don't leave hungry, I even had a little left over to take home.
The service was spot on, the staff coordinated the delivery so not one person was waiting to begin eating. Â No one's beverage wine or water was ever empty. Â They came and went without even noticing they were there. Â I can't even count how many people served us throughout the evening and Tyler was always there at the perfect time to check on guests to share personal moments. Â By the time the meal was complete we felt like we knew him for a very long time. Â It was a pleasure to be so comfortable in an upscale restaurant. Â So many times upscale restaurants can be so cold and uptight.
They chef had personally called my FIL in the week prior to us coming to check in and make sure he knew how to make the party comfortable. Â Becuase it was for a birthday party he asked if we wanted to bring the cake or should they make one. Â My FIL had the chef prepare the cake. Â It was great. Â It was a beautiful chocolate icing with fresh fruit decoration and probably 4-5 1/2" layers of vanilla cake. Â Which they delivered with dimmed lights and candles lit after everyone was comfortably finished with theirs meals. Â It was the lightest not overly rich/sweet cake.
I cannot say enough about how special The Tree Room made my MIL's  70th Birthday dinner.  I don't think the party could have been any better.  This is a hard group to please having lived in SoCal and going to some very swanky restaurants but they were all impressed.  The food was spectacular but the staff and their coordination made it a 5 star experience.  THANK YOU!
My wife and I made our first pilgrimage to the Tree Room this evening from the southern wastelands of Payson. It was worth the drive.
They started us out with a little "amuse-bouche" - probably the wrong term for a rustic, mountain-man theme, but that's all I could think of - a little wonton with some ginger-laced tuna tartare (the American version of sashimi, I suppose.) We then tucked into a delightful goat-cheese torte topped with caramelized shallots, watercress, and dijon vinaigrette. The house rolls were divine, served with virgin olive oil, kalamata olives, and a creamy butter.
By this time we were able to decide on our main course - the goodwoman of the house selected Glazed Duck Breast with a butternut squash and pecan risotto (this was her favorite, and it was divine - I was lucky to get a tiny taste), brussels sprouts, and a cranberry - molasses glaze. I, on the other hand, opted for the Braised Niman Ranch Pork "Osso Bucco" smoked parmesan polenta, with julienned brussels sprouts and sage apple jus.
Was everything perfect? No, but it wasn't enough to even make me think of not coming back. When I asked our server if he could send the young lady with those divine rolls back to our table, his response was "She should make her way back here eventually." The only correct response for a restaurant of this quality should have been "Right away, and I'll make sure it happens." As it turns out, I had to ask twice before we got her back to the table. My wife's meal was everything it should have been, but mine was just a bit bland for what I expected. The Osso Buco was tender, but the overwhelming message of my entire dinner was "salt" rather than a symphony of flavors. That said, I've eaten a lot worse food and I'm not really complaining - just being objective.
I got the feeling that our service was polite but perfunctory. It may have been because we were coming in with a local deal coupon, and Utahns are notoriously bad tippers - so perhaps our young fellow was not as attentive as he might otherwise have been. Hard to say. He was neither rude nor unpleasant, but I just felt a bit looked-down upon, and I'm open to the possibility that it was all in my head. At any rate, I'm hoping he was pleasantly surprised to see that he wasn't stiffed at the end of the night.
Would I come back? In a heartbeat. I'm anxious to try some of their other menu items, and leave some room for dessert next time.
Hmmm . . . . this is a place we've meant to visit for quite a while and we finally got around to eating there last night. Â The atmosphere and service were absolutely wonderful, but I was underwhelmed by the food. Â
First of all, kudo's to our excellent waiter who was able to recommend the perfect wine to compliment both my swordfish entree and my husband's Elk Loin. Â No mean feat! Â The decor and architecture were also spot-on and added a lot to the overall experience.
Unfortunately, the food was uneven and that was pretty surprising considering this is supposed to be one of the premiere restaurants in Utah County. Â We ordered the Goat Cheese Tart as an appetizer - so far, so good. Â However, things went downhill from there. Â The Spinach and Frisee' salad was way overdressed, to the point that I wondered if they had dunked the greens in the vinagrette and then scooped them on the plate. Â The Elk was good, but not spectacular. Â My swordfish was overcooked and, again, swimming in way to much of the accompanying sauces. Â At that point, we decided to skip desert.
Maybe I'm spoiled from eating at some of the other great places in town and in Vegas, but I was definately expecting more. Â At this price point, your really need to bring your 'A' game.
Beautiful room with Native American art and rustic architecture...and we received a table next to the tree! They were busy with a large party, so service took a slight hit, but overall just a wonderful experience and highly recommended. The adjoining bars, restaurants and gift shop add to the fun and the natural surroundings are just amazing.
Review Source:Last night I ate in the private dining room at the Tree Room.
the service was excellent and the wine was fantastic.
we started with the scallops w/ chorizo and they were amazing. they were perfectly cooked and a tad spicy from the chorizo.
next we had a salad. i don't remember what it was called but it had herbed goat cheese and currants and was very light.
for dinner i decided to have the pepper crusted steak. i had heard that it had been on the menu for years and years and figured i would try it. it was AMAZING. i made sure every bite had steak, potatoes, spinach and the mango chutney, what a perfect bite. the flavors were right on.
for dessert i had the berries in cream which was very nice, but by that time i was too full to appreciate anything.
dinner took 4 hours so don't come to the tree room in a hurry, but definitely try it!
Really liked this restaurant. Â I was on a business trip in Provo, Utah and we were told to head to Sundance. Â Sundance at first looked a little deserted but there are two small restaurants there. Â The Tree Room alone makes it worth the 20 min drive.
The atmosphere was nice. Â There's a great view of the woods/mountain through a huge windows and the whole place has a quaint, rustic feel (it still felt modern though). Â
The food was great. Â I had a Waygu Hanger Steak and Sea Scallops to start. Â The flavours were well balanced and the dishes were plated nicely. Â My only quip is that the steak i ordered came medium vs. the medium rare I ordered. Â If you're in the area, I highly recommend this place.
I spent the weekend in Sundance with the boyfriend and my parents to celebrate my dad's birthday. Â Dinner at the Tree Room was one of the best parts. Â The parents went to dinner here Friday night, but because the boyfriend's flight got delayed, we weren't able to make it. Â Their dinner was so good that they agreed to go again on Saturday. Â With how expensive this place is, that's saying something.
All of the salads we tried were good-- the crab one surprisingly wasn't our favorite, but the panzanella was great. Â The boyfriend had the coconut curry soup and it was one of the best things I've tasted in a long time. Â My mom liked the pepper steak so much she ordered it both nights. Â She wasn't a huge fan of the mango chutney so they made her a brown sauce for the second night, and she said it was incredible. Â Everyone else went with the hangar steak. Â It's Wagyu beef, so you really don't have to say anything else about it. Â It's fabulous. Â We also tried the strawberry soup dessert, and even though it's odd, I'd definitely recommend it.
Note: Â we didn't try any, but the menu has been updated to have some vegetarian-friendly options. Â Not sure about vegan.
Overall, one of the best places I've been in Utah, or anywhere, period. Â Highly recommended.
I almost feel bad giving the Tree Room only three stars based on the service we received but I have to take into account the food and price.
I had my heart set on trying the famous Tree Room at Sundance as soon as I arrived in Utah. Â I had read the yelp reviews and looked at their website extensively.
We called for a reservation and we were easily accommodated.
Our dinner was set for 8:00 p.m. on a Tuesday and we showed up promptly. Â The hostess was fantastic, taking our coats quickly, and leading us to our table. Â The entire wait staff is impeccable. Â They run a very tight and orderly ship; I was impressed with the service which is very hard to do.
The food however, was less then mind blowing. Â Don't get me wrong it is okay but not over $100 per person good. Â I feel like a dinner at that price should blow your mind. Â The food is presented and plated beautifully but the flavors are not there. Â My table of four consisted of 3 foodies and a professional chef and we all agreed; you pay for the location and the service more then the food.
I am happy that I went but sadly I would not return for dinner.
Simply put, one of the best restaurants in Utah.
I would have to disagree with the negative comments on here, I have only ever had first rate food, service and experiences at the Tree Room.
The menu could best be described as new american/mountain food with a seasonal slant. Â Think big gamey meats like Elk and Bison. Â The restaurant shares the goals of a certain Mr Redford so the menu is also focused on the local, organic and sustainable - which generally speaking, equates to great flavours.
The dining space is perfect for the location, a kind of ski lodge/cabin feel, lots of dark woods, fireplaces and dim lighting. Â Perfect for a romantic dinner. Â One end of the space is framed by massive floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the base of the ski slopes; while the other side features the restaurants signature 'tree' that rises up through the floor into the ceiling.
I mentioned I disagreed with some of the earlier commentators. Â I for one find the service staff extremely knowledgeable. Â This is a high end restaurant with a very professional wait staff, some who have worked here for 15 years.
If I were to fault anything, it would be that this restaurant is nestled up in the Sundance resort, and not down the road from my home. Â At any rate it makes the restaurant great for special occasions, stay overnight in the beautiful resort and make a night of it.
i have to forewarn anybody reading this review because the only times I've been here are on business trips (usually for very critical launches) and if we somehow manage to leave our supplier site before 9pm. Â So imagine a group of coworkers that are beyond tired (as in, we usually only sleep 3-4 hrs a night), delusional (from lack of sleep + higher elevation) and extremely cranky/moody.
The food is deeeeelicious though! I think I've tried most things on the menu -- it's a smaller menu but considering that this restaurant is way up in the mountains, you should expect it to be so. Â Don't expect this to be a place where you can chow down and get out w/in an hour. Â It's meant for you to slooowwwww down. Â They almost always have their fireplaces going but must warn you that you will burn alive if you sit near them! Â It'll feel real good for the first 30 seconds as you thaw off from the cold outside. Â The best would be if you got a table closeby but could rotate w/ other people at your table. Â If you're too far from the fire, you'll feel like you're in Siberia!
Every February we meet friends from the East Coast and LA in Park City for some skiing, and usually have dinner one night at the Tree Restaurant. Â I think this is presently my favorite restaurant on the planet - and I get around quite a bit. Â Every meal there has been outstanding.
A memorable dish was the delicately spiced butternut squash soup with apple chunks - perfect in the winter after a cold day on the slopes. Â We all went home and tried to duplicate the recipe in our own kitchens.
The staff is friendly and of course the decor is spectacular, with the collection of fine Native American artifacts. Â A wonderful touch is the colored glass dishes and glasses that are recycled from the discarded bottles at the restaurant, by the glass blowers at the Sundance arts colony.
The desserts are fabulous.
Top notch, all the way around, Mr. Redford - thanks.
Had lunch here. It's a nice space but the food  left a lot to be desired. After waiting way too long to get our food it all came out cold. My pulled pork sandwich came out with a stale bun. It was flavorless. No sauce nothing. Weeeeak. All of the salads where the size of side salads at best and cost as much as a main course salad would. On a positive note....the iced tea was good.
Review Source:A rare 5-stars from me. Stunning mountain location, superb (and knowledgeable service - our guy did know where the fish came from and how long the steaks were marinated), relaxed atmosphere even though it was a Monday night with us as the last table, lots of nice touches with the décor to catch your eye (the black and white photos near the restrooms are great), and a nice walk to the Owl Bar or along the riverside to finish off with.
I would go back without any hesitation.
Robert Redford's resort is teaming with young, earnest 'yuppies' as my boyfriend calls them, all hastening their step to make sure you enjoy your stay. The Tree Room restaurant was a pleasant experience overall - with a nice ambiance (Redford's personal collections of American Indian art - but not overdone,) earnest but uninformed service (served the wrong brand of bourbon without telling David until questioned, didn't know where the fish came from, etc,) and a really nice wine list. This place is pricey, as is the other dining room option on site, but you have to drive 15 minutes to get off of the resort to find other options. The food preparation was upscale American...lovely and tasty!
Review Source:The food was fantastic!  It found it difficult to narrow down what to eat  as an entrée.  So I decided to have the Tree Room Pepper Steak Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Spinach, Mango Chutney.  The Pepper Steak was amazing, If you like pepper as I, then you will enjoy a burst of pepper followed my a sweet flavors from the Mango Chutney that both compliment and mellow.  I was told this is one of their signature dishes and that has been on the menu forever, according to Tyler (server).  He said that they rotate their menu and when removed this dish, they received negative feedback so the brought the dish back due to popular demand.  I am not a big steak eater, but wow, I would have a difficult time not eating this again, perhaps my doctor would prefer I order the Halibut next time. Â
For Panna Cotta lovers, I recommend the Blue Cheese Panna Cotta Fresh Berries, Ewe's Blue Cheese, Hazelnuts, Aged Sherry Vinegar, Alanzia Olive Oil topped with micro herbs. Â I am intrigued by anything Panna Cotta and it did live up to my expectations. Â I also sampled some of the Heirloom Tomato Panzanella Salad and that was enjoyable. Â
For chocolate lovers, I recommend the Warm Chocolate Truffle Cake Rocky Road Ice Cream, Almond Caramel Sauce with toasted slivered almonds for dessert. Â
For wine, I enjoyed a glass of the 2007 DeLoach-Sundance Pinot Noir, Russian River with the entrée.  Tyler, my server recommended that I sample the 2003 Altamura-Sundance, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa and that would have been better with the Pepper Steak
The service there was 5 star from the moment we arrived for our  reservation, my guest and I were greeted with a smile start to finish.   Tyler was most helpful and assisted us in narrowing down our entrée selection.  My colleague has been to the Tree Room before and last time we were in town on business they were booked.  Later, after talking to Tyler on what a wonderful we just both had and my colleague asking more questions about Sundance (Robert Redford's wine collection) that he has been serving there for about 14 years.  I really enjoyed Tyler referring to Robert as 'Bob', since my name is Robert and my dad's name is Bob. Â
I agree with Rachel M comments, that the servers"didn't interrupt the flow of conversation". Â I expect to go back to Sundance and the Tree Room again! Â I highly recommend reservations unless you are eating early perhaps.
I received top-notch food and service at the Tree Room. The waiters were super accommodating but didn't interrupt the flow of conversation or the overall ambience of the evening. They have wonderful selections on the menu. The Tree Room is a dining experience that you don't want to miss if you're visiting the Sundance Resort.
Review Source:[the form above would not take the phone number, it is: +1 (801) 225-4107 x4223]
this is a AAA four-diamond award restaurant. Â the food was lackluster but expensive. Â they had, for example, no salt on the table, but when I asked they brought me three gourmet salts, which were nice, but one was empty! Â the osso bucco was either poor or I don't like osso bucco (see, for a counter example, legal seafood where you can calibrate based on them, if you don't like legal's version, you probably don't like).
we also at the foundry, which while still expensive, was much better value.
There are very few places where after dinner, I was at peace with dying. Â I'm certain Anthony Bourdain was quoting someone else but to paraphrase, he said that it's not all about the food - it's about the company ya keep. Â I can't agree more - but what would you say if for one divine moment, the stars were aligned and you had both? Â Our team had been busting our ass in SLC for about a year, working long hours away from home. Â We were getting close to finishing up our business in SLC, and a colleague of mine had recommended this place. Â
The bliss doesn't start when you enter the restaurant - it begins with the ride up through the mountains to the restaurant. Â Sundance is a beautiful community nestled in the mountains - the ride alone is worth it. Â The restaurant is reminiscent of a chic, knotty pine log cabin -with beautiful Native American artwork appointed through-out. Â
There were about 8 of us, and we were seated in a cozy corner of the restaurant.  The wine started flowing immediately.  The food was absolutely out of this world.  I don't recall the appetizers (I'm usually hitting the wine pretty hard at first), but the duck was incredible.  Incredible.  Did  I mention the wine?  Oh and the service was beyond reproach.  Attentive in every way and courteous and helpful in their explanations of the cuisine. Â
I highly recommended this restaurant for decompressing after a long year at work, or bring a date and enjoy a beautiful romantic dinner. Â I'm almost afraid to come back because of my expectations. Â Almost.
The Tree Room provides great ambiance and is relatively small and intimate. Â The decor is pretty fitting to Utah--featuring Native American artwork and rustic furnishings. Â The tree that Robert Redford insisted they build the restaurant around is no longer living, as I understand, but it's a cool story. Â And hey, you might get lucky while dining at the Tree Room and see Mr. Redford in person.
Anyway, I really like the peppercorn steak at the Tree Room--it is very tasty. Â The desserts are delectable, as well. Â Beyond the food, the service is top notch. Â Highly recommended--it's my favorite place for fine dining in Utah Valley.
Yet another suggestion by a co-worker. Â This one was a no brainer since I went up to Sundance multiple times while in Provo on business. Â In fact I was really looking forward to it since it was going to be the one good meal of the week. Â
The Tree Room is the smaller more formal restaurant in the Sundance Resort. Â It has a tree growing through the middle of it (hence the name). Â The Tree Room room only has a few tables and on the night we went (a Thursday in January) there was only one other table in use. Â
Even though I did know my dinner mates that well it turned out to be a fun night. Â The wait staff was really fun and once the other table left for the night and we were the last patrons in the restaurant they really loosened up.
As would expected with a small restaurant the menu is limited to a couple of entrees. Â However, no one in our party complained about their meals. Â We all got dessert and the wait staff gave the whole table an additional dessert as well.
One of these days I am going back to try it again. Â This is a great part of the country and the mountains are breath taking.
Ok, so this is my kind of place. Â Small, intimate with Santa Fe southwestern decor and a tree growing up through the roof. Â And even better, the food is excellent. Â Once again, the customer service is what always sticks out as the real success of any good restaurant. Â If the service is bad and the food is great, you still won't go back. Bad service is bad service. Â If the service is good and the food is just so-so, you will probably give it another try. Â Well, with this place there is no need to fret, both service & food are excellent. Â Somebody has done their training and listened to what constitutes a good business model. Â Even the coffee is excellent - - which doesn't happen often in Utah. Â Â This place is not just a restaurant, but a destination. Â And who knows, you might be lucky enough to be there on a day that Mr. Redford decides to eat out.
Review Source:I haven't written any reviews for a while because I've been wanting something special for my Review Number 100. Â What the heck, this place will do fine. Â I've been in the Sundance area several times in my life and even attended a conference at Sundance 15 years ago. Â But I believe that I had never been to the Tree Room until last week when I drove up from Provo with three other people. Â We arrived with a jute bag that contained three bottles of red wine, and all of it got consumed! Â Given that the designated driver didn't consume much, and given that I was drinking more than my share, it's clear that I put down more than 750 mililiters of (excellent) wine during my dinner.
It's amazing that I remember anything of my meal, and it's amazing that I felt fine the next morning. Â The wine really was good; that's probably the explanation.
The Tree Room is about 10-to-the-10 times better than anything else that I've been to in Utah. Â If you remember that most people in Provo think that caffeine and alcohol are the work of the devil, you can see why. Â This place is elegant and potentially a bit fussy; I withheld the fifth star because the ratio between price and quality was a bit higher than I'm used to. Â Also, my cheese plate (two cheeses, some local organic honey, and baby almonds kissed by angels) struck me as a bit pretentious and over the top. Â (One of the cheeses, a baby fog of some sort made by the people who make Humboldt Fog, was less good than the Humboldt Fog that I'm accustomed to.)
For the record, I had an onion tart as a starter and then the braised short ribs as a main dish. Â Braised short ribs are on everyone's menu these days, but the idea of adding foie gras to the plate struck me as wonderfully decadent (but almost surely not as original to the Tree Room).
There's a whole bunch of Robert Redford stuff on the walls and on the shelves of a waiting room near the reception area. Â The receptionist told us that RR wanders in from time to time and that he's a great guy. Â I've never met him, but he did stop by during the predecessor to the conference that I attended. Â He wished eveyone well and expressed the hope that the attendees would have a happy and productive time.
The Tree Room is worth a detour if you're even vaguely in the area. Â It's not cheap but you'll get an excellent meal. Â If you bring your own wine, make sure that it has Utah tax stickers on it -- otherwise the staff will not allow you to drink it on the premises.
I travel to Utah frequently for work and like to try new restaurants. The Tree Room was upscale without being uncomfortably so. In fact, I was amused by the double tables of Japanese tourists having a rolicking good time while I dined alone. I had a beet salad appetizer-amazing presentation on that, then a pepper steak with mashed potatos and mango chutney. Everything was cooked to perfection. And even better, my waiter comped my dessert. Probably because I was the only lone diner in the place and had that air of Steve Martin in the Lonely Guy. Â All in all it was a great meal & the only reason I haven't gone back is that when I submitted my expense report I discovered that there's a $25 limit on dinners. Oops!
