The view is great, but the view is more interesting from Dockside a few streets over for a few dollars less.
The service was good, but not friendly. Â At least we didn't feel hurried.
The decor is white paint, white plastic, an old carpet inside. Â There are paper placemats, metal utensils, crockery plates and paper napkins which are hard to hold onto in the wind.
The food was not good. Â My husband got the smallest and worst looking piece of mahi we have ever seen. My fish sandwich was smothered in bland cheese and very thick breading, which was made soggy by the heavy cheese covering. The french fries were bland and there were tons of them. They were the only thing served in abundance.
The number of dollar signs should maybe be reviewed. Â I don't know how one should figure it. You could come out under thirty per person , if you had a sandwich, no app, and no desert or alcohol. Â But an app, drinks, entree and desert would put you way into the $55-$65 range.
There are so many restaurants in the area, that there is no reason to go here.
The drinks are strong & the view is amazing; these are the two wooden legs supporting Tugboats. Overall.. it could be a little more refined.. The carpet is worn and dirty around the corners, the paint is straight PEELING OFF, & there's some random, ancient-looking dust-collectors & pictures for decorations in the bar area upstairs. But, BUT-
it is Cape Cod in the summer...& it is right on the marina, so you are rubbing elbows with people straight off their boats. There is a gorgeous view, and because of this one probably wouldn't notice the decor inside. There are plastic chairs outside, and the set up makes it slightly picnic-y, but I think that kind of comes with the marina territory.
Tugboats! What are you doing?! You have this awesome location and you're doing absolutely nothing amazing with it!
The menu is standard Cape Cod seafood, but the plates are completely uninspired. My friend ordered the baked scrod and it was just a small piece of fish, a blob of mashed potatoes, and some basic mixed vegetables with butter. I create more beautiful dishes in my tiny NYC kitchen. Nothing was particularly tasty or superb and the presentation was just...sad.
And speaking of presentation, the design of this restaurant is so so so off. It looks like it hasn't been redecorated in decades. Pine wood everywhere, ugly mini curtains on the windows, and white plastic furniture on the patio deck. Come on. You can do better.
I mean, I guess they'll continue to get a lot of business by trapping unsuspecting tourists who are just delighted by the harbor view. But it's just plain depressing and I really wish they would do something more tasteful (decor and food-wise) with the place, especially since the location is so great.
Service was good. We had a nice table with a view. I had a burger that was just eeeh. The rest of our party had seafood. They liked it. I was somewhat dismayed by the lobster prices. They would be fine for last year but I know that this has been a great season for lobster and the prices are super low but not here!!
Review Source:"A NOTABLE Group Dining Experience"
Oct 1, 2011 aky13
I was at the Tugboats at Hyannis Marina on September 30 with an alumni group of about 80 people. Group dining is "iffy." Since we were traveling New England, lobster was almost mandatory. I don't care for lobster, so I had steak. The first place we had lobster, several days earlier, the menu boasted 1 1/8 pound crustaceans. That may be the SMALLEST lobster that can legally be taken, I don't know. BUT, they were small. The steak that was served to the group was thin, inedible, gristle. Forward a few days to Tugboats. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!
Tugboats served generously sized lobsters that, I am told by my wife, was excellent. The lobsters were accompanied by boiled potatoes, fresh corn on the cob and mussels. My NY strp steak was TOO big (probably close to a full pound), thick and PERFECTLY done! The steak was accompanied by wonderfully seasoned mashed potatoes and steamed fresh veggies in butter. Our preselected group menu included an apple crisp dessert that looked awesome. Everyone else started with seafood chowder. I did not taste either that soup or dessert, but I am told they were excellent.
Yes, I did NOT taste them... I am trying to go gluten free. At this point, I need to comment on service at Tugboats. the two managers made sure that EVERYONE's needs were accommodated! NOTABLY, Ms. Ira (YES, Ms., Ira is a shortened name) Mendoza ASSURED that my meal was gluten free and saw to it that I had a magnificent salad in lieu of the thickened soup, a freshly baked non-wheat roll, a gluten free beer, AND a double gluten free dessert!!! All this while managing food service for 80 hungry people.
All in all, a delightful group dining expeience with superb food and caring, personalized, service.
I cannot comment on value, since I did not see a retail menu and the cost of my meal was part of a package. I assume that it is $$$$, but food and service like this is worth every penny!
We thought this place would be great, it was huge, it looked nice, had a ton of staff and it had a great view of the water, however we were quickly disappointed, our waitress, as sweet as she was had no clue what she was doing, couldn't open a wine bottle, we had to do it ourselves, then when we saw the price of the food we expected not only a large plate of food, but something delicious, yet it was not that much food nor did it have any seasoning, I mean NONE! Â I had to dump salt and pepper on it to get it down, I would not recommend this place to any type of person unless you don't like taste and enjoy being ripped off.
Review Source:We love tugboats but it is a litle pricey. They do have decent portions though.
The restaurant has a great view of the Harbor with a friendly, accommodating staff.
On a recent visit we had the pleasure of eating dinner next to Adam Sandler and his family. Its not McDonalds! Plan to spend some money and have a nice night out.
FAV APPETIZER- Blackened Tuna Bites!
I had been waiting all winter for em! I'm into contemporary fare, the food here is a lil' more traditional, but I have never been disappointed with a meal! If I am childless I love sitting at the top bar. Great place for taking pictures!! It's very casual old cape cod. Â
A bit of an older crowd, which is cool with me. I like to take my family here when they are visiting from outta town. The prices are about the same as other spots around, but the view is much better!
Awesome food. Great service. The best location to eat seafood in Hyannis.
After going to another restaurant where the locals go, I had very little expectations from Tugboats. I was happily surprised by the location and service. The ambiance is very good and staff is very nice and helps a lot with selection. They have a very good menu for whatever you want to eat from Veg. to seafood. And of course the seafood was very good quality an taste. It is reasonably priced and a great dining experience.
I will recommend this one to anybody who is looking for a nice seafood place in Hyannis.
When you spending time on the Cape, particularly in Hyannis, you have a good amount of dining options. Â However, most of them sit on Main St., Ocean St., or perhaps along R-132 or R-28. Â If you would like to eat in a different, less crowded location that gives you a view of a marina, Tugboats is a good option. Â New England seafood is the main focus.
Clam chowder, lobster bisque, cod, fried clams, and some more of the usual suspects are on the menu. Â The food itself is solid, I enjoyed the baked scrod with a cup of clam chowder the last time that I ate here.
The bar on the second floor gets my vote for seating, a better view.
Classic Cape Cod fare in a slightly upscale setting that you can still visit in shorts with (or without) your kids. If that's what you're looking for then it's perfect; it's not the place to go if you want to be trendy or innovative. I had a ceasar salad and the baked scrod. The kids had a kids' portion of fish and chips which was expensive for a kids menu item, but better fish that I what I can usually get off the regular menu at any other place I would actually take young kids. Nice way to end a day on the Cape.
Review Source:We are native New Englanders and Cape regulars. Tugboats was just OK. The service was good and the harbor view very nice. The food was overpriced and, again, just OK. I came for the lobster roll which was good. Not too much mayo but the roll was not toasted and buttered. Sorry, but this is a requirement for a 4-5 star lobster roll. The lobster bisque was good, but no lobstermeat. For $26.00, this roll and bisque fell short. My husband had the bluefish which he thought was fresh tasting and well cooked. The accompanying potatoes and veggies were steamed and less than wonderful. He did, however, comment that the beer was nice and cold. Â If you are looking for amazing lobster bisque, go to Barbyann's. Amazing lobster roll, go to the Raw Bar.
Review Source:We really enjoyed our evening here - amazing views, nice patio, very good fresh seafood and excellent service. Â They have a very nice selection of seafood items at reasonable prices (reasonable for the location and view I should say) and the servings were quite large. They also had a nice selection of nice wines (nothing over the top but perfect to go with the meal). Our waitress was very helpful about the menu and super sweet. Â Overall a wonderful experience and I would recommend this place to anyone touring in Cape Cod.
Review Source:We were in Hyannis for our anniversary in September 2008. Â We stopped here on night, after yelping restaurants, and flipping thru local magazines on places to eat. Â We ended up stopping by here our first night here. Â I got a platter of shrimp and fried clams, and a few others things, my boyfriend had the lobster. Â The lobster bisque was awesome, and how could it not be. Â My least favorite thing was the fried clams, I guess I am just not a fan. Â Again I was the only non-white person there, which I don't particularly mind per se, but jeez is it necessary to stare? Â Like you have never seen an Indian person before? Â It was a good experience I would definitely go back. Â It was close to the end of the season, last week or so, and there was a major storm headed our way. Â The place was packed thou, and with good reason.
Review Source:Was in Hyannis for the first time and was told we had to go to Tugboats...so we did... great views of the harbor and marina...you could sit out there for days...
we split the lobster overdose...which is exactly that..bisque was great, lobster roll was great...lobster ice cream was great....only kidding no lobster ice cream...
The service is great. The staff is friendly and efficient. The setting is beautiful, with a nice outdoor seating area right on the marina. Very pretty.
But the food is mediocre at best. I had the crab cakes. They were dreadful - gummy and salty with a nasty aftertaste and a thick gooey sauce. My husband ordered a lobster roll with lobster which was completely tasteless. My son had a steak that was tough and tasteless. Three people who were all unhappy with their food.
go for the clams. thats all i have to say--fried clams. granted, its on the water and its right downtown, but its noisy, crowded and theres always somewhat of a wait. if you're craving fried clams though (which i frequently do) go to tugboats! 3 stars only because the fried seafood is worth 4-5 stars, yet its packed w/tourists and the atmosphere isn't fantastic (even if it IS on the water) so, 2 stars.
Review Source:Stopped in for a drink. Â Very nice outdoor seating with a view of the Harbor (even though it's about 200 feet off from the harbor). Â Good for a lazy afternoon beer or cocktail.
Didn't sample the food. Â Talked w/ a local and they said it's okay but nothing to write home about. Â I don't rate food on hearsay, though, so consider the three stars for the bar only...
There was a bit of a crowd/wait when we first got to the restaurant, but in any case, maybe we lucked out because, after being told we had a 45 minute wait, we were seated within 5 minutes for a table for 6 (what a nice surprise)!
Delicious raw oysters. The little neck clams were good too, although, they seemed more like cherrystone clams (looked pretty huge when we got them). Â
Lobster bisque was a bit too salty- kind of like when you leave something in the pot for too long. Â But OH MY- the clam chowder was SOOO good- we licked every last drop out of our bowls.
The lobsters were perfect and not overcooked, or the least bit rubbery-- even sweet enough w/o the butter, but of course, to everything tasty, we must add some more fat! Â A great dinner, as we only had one night in Cape Cod.
went here today upon recommendation from the innkeeper at the b&b we were staying at. Â i must say, i was kind of skeptical upon walking in that the place would be any good. Â it was still moderately busy considering we were coming for lunch at 2pm, but i figured it was a place suited to please tourists looking to dine with a harbor view without any regard to the food. Â boy was i wrong. Â the food was fantastic.
at first, i had thought it was a little pricey, $16 for a seafood pasta salad, $5 for a cup of lobster bisque, $9 for a turkey club.. but after we saw how enormous the portions were, it was actually a deal. Â my pasta salad was full of scallops, shrimp, and even a big piece of lobster, mind you it wasn't the whole tail or anything, but at least a claws worth, and it must've been a 1/2 a pound of pasta or something. Â the sundried pesto was so tasty. Â the best i've had in a restaurant. Â i tried my husband's lobster bisque.. and that was the best i've had too-- Â so rich, thick and creamy. Â the club was big enough to feed two people. Â it came with cole slaw that i thought was pretty good.. and i usually don't eat cole slaw. Â theirs was light on the mayo and tasted very fresh.
the service was the only thing that was lacking. Â our server probably hated his job.. he wasn't so enthusiastic and just went through the motions of taking our orders and bringing the food.. no water refills, nothing.. at least he wasn't rude. Â the food was so good though, i'm willing to over look it and still give this place 5 stars.
