Visited for lunch on 4/25/13. I've been there many times in the past, mostly just for the beer, most of which I like. I've had dinner there once or twice, first time for lunch. I was with a party of three. The service was very cordial and timely. Drinks brought out and served in good order. Lunch was a little long in coming, but still not too bad. The meal that I had, however, left much to be desired. I had the Prime Rib wrap. The beef was very, very fatty, and the advertised horseradish mustard was missing. My partners had a crbcake sandwich and a Chicken Ceaser wrap respectively, and they said they were "OK". The french fries were good, though. A bit disappointed.
Review Source:This was my third trip to UBW. Overall, they do the brew pub thing quite well. We started with the beer sampler because we always love trying a little of everything. Most of the beers were pretty good. The Fester was my favorite an the hubby went with the hefeweizen - we were both happy with our choices. We didn't want to stuff ourselves so decided to share the french onion soup (amazing), the crab cheesecake, olive tapenade, and seared tuna. We had the crab, tapenade, and soup here before. I was quite disappointed in the crab this time around. It was not as creamy or as sweet as I remembered it. Also it had a bit of a "gassy" flavor - like maybe they flamed the top and it picked up the butane odor from the torch??? The tapenade was a hit (we love olives), and the tuna was perfect! For dessert we had black forest cheesecake. It was a layer of cake, a layer of cheesecake, another layer of cake, a final layer of cheesecake... this was soooooo goood!!!!!!!
We will go back, maybe give the crab another shot because it was really yummy the other two times I had it!
Lunch after some high class shopping at Green Dragon.
Stopped by on the slow-ish 230 in between period and had the place to ourselves, bar and tables in front started to fill as we ate.
Beer - Went with a porter, better half had a pumpkin ale. Â Porter was on the lighter side for the style, not bad but it didn't suit my preference. Â Pumpkin Ale was met with rave reviews.
Food - split a bowl of the trout chowder which was excellent. Â Elk meatloaf for the novelty (good not great) and a Pittsburgh salad (on par, large portion). Â Service was very good, he let us know he was training a new guy so we took the gaffes with a grain of salt.
Enjoyable lunch. Â Made a decent account of themselves to earn another visit.
Very good beers here. The owner makes them himself, and he does a great job. This place DOES NOT have a full bar, so don't fault it because you can't order your cosmos or long islands at a brewery. The food is good these days (it wasn't the case a couple of years ago), and their menu is sizable.
They have pints for $3.25 Tue-Thurs., as well as Sunday. They're closed mondays. The building is beautiful, but some of the old-timey pictures on the wall are in poor taste (I'm thinking of one picture in particular that features kids in what seems to be blackface). I'm not thinking of this odd choice of art, nor the owner (who can be a curmudgeon from my experience). I'm just thinking of the food and the beer, and both are good.
The maibock is fantastic, and you can't go wrong with the Uncle Fester, which has, if I remember correctly, something along the lines of 12-13% abv.
I'm not personally a fan of live music in a brewery outside of Oktoberfests, so I agree with another yelper who says they can do without it. The way this building is, with ultra-high ceilings and all-wooden everything, things can get too loud pretty quick.
I am in the service business myself so don't write reviews hastly...... After having a great time at Stoudts, thought we would try UBW, we were on a brewery hop.
Now I am not a uber beer geek, but if its a BREWERY thus certain minor details should be met. The bartender was the real issue ( we didn't eat ). I told us she hates beer doesn't drink it. So I am a bit confused why a brewery would hire a bartender that doesn't like , drink or know anything about the product? Could you imagine walking into Stoudts and the bartender saying, "nah beers not my thing" ! Also the bar is decorated in tons of vintage Reading Beer nostalgic pieces, ( not being from the area ), we asked " oh do you have Reading beer , is it still made"? She rolled her eyes and said she had no idea, remember she is surrounded by hand crafted beers and thats how she makes a living but doesn't even look at wants hanging on the walls.
I am sure she might be a fine mixed drink bartender , who knows, but if I was a business owner of a brewery, I certainly want someone behind my bar that is a adovcate of my product, makes me want to drink and spend money, and at minimal likes beer.
Better stick to Stoudts where they understand people drive from a good distance to pull up a bar stool and have a great beer. ( UBW might have some fanstatic bartenders so don't want to knock them all , this was my experience with one ) . happy drinking !
Interesting place with a very good variety of beer on tap. In fact, you can see the brewery right in front of your eyes. Relaxing place that wasn't very busy on a Wednesday night.
Had many different food options on the menu, and the elk meatloaf was pretty good. had the sweet potatoes on the side and it even came with a side of maple syrup for dipping. Very nice attention to detail. Try this place out of you are looking for something different than the usual chain restaurants.
Surprised that  yelpers don't like this as much as we did. Exceptional dinner service in the dining room, perfect waiter who knew when to whisk things away and when to leave us alone.
Saturday night, not all that crowded. Pleasant airy and high ceilings, rustic. Olive tapenade starter was perfectly chopped, intelligently composed, with pita triangles.
Onion soup was as good as this gets. Lots of cheese, deep beef flavor. Smoked trout chowder was incredibly good ... would love to have the recipe. I could have eaten nothing but that. Â Tender bits of trout, not a hint of gumminess or overkill with thickener. Superb.
Prime rib was a huge slab, excellent flavor, a tad tough. Got end cut which may account for the lack of melt in your mouth beef. Came with baked potato and vegetable medley.
Seared ahi tuna arrived with a faint wasabi drizzle, perfectly cooked, very fresh flavor, generous portion. Same vegetable medley cooked to al dente but more than just waved over steam.
Tried two crafts beers, and couldn't tell you what they were other than very good. Wine is from a local winery and eminently forgettable -- that yeasty tone that we find in products from most local vineyards on the east coast.. We must note that the waiter warned us so our own fault for insisting on the Merlot. Our advice: ship the wine.
The beers were ok, pretty standard and the food was ok, nothing to write home about. Â The problem we experienced was the service. Â We arrived, a party of seven, at 7:45 with no reservations. Â We were told they were short staffed and it would be an hour wait. Â Fine. Â We asked if we could wait at the bar, the hostess said no, the bar was too crowded. Â When she disappeared we went to the bar anyway, it wasn't crowded. Â We got some seats and waited at hour and asked again about our table. Â We asked at approximately 55 min. after we first arrived. Â She looked at her watch and asked "Didn't I tell you it was going to be an hour?" and then walked away. Â She finally seated us a little before 9pm. Â We ordered. Â And waited and waited. Â Our food finally came a little after 10. Â That's right, over an hour after we ordered. Â We finally walked out of the place at 10:45, THREE hours after we had arrived.
The service alone is going to keep me away, but maybe we hit a bad night.
Great place! Didn't eat here, but enjoyed two beer samplers. The beer--all traditional styles--is solid all around. Tried and true recipes, no experimental beers here. Excellent service at the bar. The brewery has only been around 4 years, but it feels as though it's been around for decades. Try the Wobbly Bob Dopplebock...so smooth.
Review Source:Central Pa is really becoming a destination for craft beer fans and Union Barrel Works is a must for the travelling beer fan.
They have a wide selection of beers brewed on site and a great menu.  I enjoyed their Kolsch, which had a really nice finish.   I would also recommend the smoked trout chowder, something you don't always see at  brewpub.
The brewpub is also full of some really nice beer memorabilia including old Reading Beer cans and bottles. Â Â The staff was very friendly as well.
So if you are in the PA Dutch Country stop in for some good food and beer!
I've been here twice and was about to return when to my horror I discovered that they had live music Friday and Saturday night .I really don't want to be serenaded when I eat.Look if it brings in the people , I don't blame them but I can't stand having to sit around listening to an overamplified  living tribute to Gordon Lightfoot( Look, Gordon is actually underated.I like EARLY MORNING RAIN  but not while I'm eating). Also I have tinnutisand I have to be very careful.Tinnutis is an increasingly common condition and its cause is excessive noise. That said this is fundamentally a really nice place. The beer they brew is kind of weird but interesting , I like the food , I like the people .I wish they'd loose the music.Harps playing Satie or Vivaldi would be OK!
