Unique has been a part of the Alexandria gay culture for over two decades, and now  survives in its current location as the only gay bar in town--plus it's gay owned.  There is a gay owned bistro on Bolton, but if you are in need of a full bar with members from your LGBT family, this is it.  That is, unless you want to break into someones' house on Gay Street but that could get sticky. Â
This bar is in an industrial part of town so it's a little rough around the edges, but  any town with a population of LGBT people needs a place to meet.  It doesn't suffer from an identity crisis, but it has obviously been pushed out of the 'public eye'.  Compared to bars in major cities it would be deserving of two stars, but that's just not fair.
The staff is friendly, the drinks are strong, and so are the patrons. I come back for a visit and like a larger community with more resources these days. Â There are better bars in Alexandria, but if you are gay and you want to be among your own kind, this place is your best bet.
