Uptown Cafe

Texas Monthly's "Top 40 Small Town Cafes" has not steered me wrong in recent times, but I thought that this pick was somewhat lacking. It had all of the nuances of a typical Texan establishment, but it could have used some tweaking in preparation.

Uptown Cafe has some true American class, though I thought the offerings were slightly boring. The menu was straightforward, with items like chicken fingers and breakfast fare such as eggs and biscuits. The service was impeccable, and I really liked the nitty, gritty atmosphere.

UC is exactly what you expect from a Texas-style dining establishment. There is a lack of decor, an abundance of local, and very low pricing. Drop in if you want a true small town experience.

I ordered up a breakfast of champions: biscuits and gravy with a slice of coconut pie. Unfortunately, the biscuits did not come up to par with the awesome gravy. They were very "processed" tasting with that Pillsbury sort of butteriness. They literally tasted of food-stuff chemicals. The milky gravy was rich and savory.

The coconut pie was warm, but it was not set yet, unfortunately. Also, the meringue was a tad runny.

Alas, I enjoyed my meal here... for the people, the atmosphere, and the Southern hospitality. The food: eh.
