I have gone to Verona many times and absolutely loved their calzones. Everytime my friends would get together we would grab onion rings and calzones from Verona. Despite the local tale that the staff sweats into the grease, we still ordered them because they are that delicious.
This changed, however, over the weekend when my sister and I ordered a couple Calzones to pick up. We got to Verona and a small animal was in the parking lot outside the door to get in. I then realized it was a rat, and the two staff members were outside the door, clearly having just chased it out of the restaurant. As if this wasnt bad enough, while turning the car around to leave (we were NOT eating there after seeing the Rat) we saw the two staff members beating the rat to death with a large metal pole. They took turns hitting it about 10 times each until the metal pole was bent .It was horrific and traumatizing. It was like watching a gang fight. They then left the rat dead smashed outside the entrance door.
I will never eat there again. EVER.
Given the limited options of decent pizza in Ayer, Verona's is pretty darn good. The pizza is thin crust and generally quite good. Although we've had to stop ordering our favorite pepperoni/onions/green peppers combo because of inconsistent results. At times they make this combo pizza superbly, but at other times it tastes "funky" and it is quite soggy. We generally stick to plain cheese or pepperoni with good results. Although they make a host of other dishes ranging from seafood to pasta, we've only ordered the pizza save the occassional greek salad which are ok. The staff are quite friendly and the restaurant is generally clean. The only reason why I didn't give 4 stars is the lack of consistency in more "complicated" pizzas.
