I stopped in here while passing through on business, great beer selection - food is said to be quite good but I can only speak to the free popcorn(awesome) - the place is in an old warehouse and is pretty cool - I'd say a bar/dump hybrid but it is clean. Â The waitress was very nice and attentive - I wish we had that service where I'm from! Â Worth a stop if you're around the area.
Review Source:First time visitor to the Viking and I hope to return again soon! Don't be put off by the outward appearance; looks can be deceiving. And once you enter, the same rule applies. I thoroughly enjoyed "Kim's grilled cheese" with thick bacon and  (surprise!) slices of green apple inbetween delightful slices of thick, but not greasy,  grilled sourdough bread. Subbing the rosemary, garlic, parmesan  sweet potato fries for regular fries was no problem, and they were delicious. Crispy and  hand cut, they were worthy of any "upscale" restaurant. On top of this, the bartender (Stephen?) was friendly, and knowledgable when it came to local IPAs. As a  single female diner, I felt comfortable and taken care of. PS: During this visit, I was on business, and the Viking was recommended  by a local as a great place for food and beer, and this recommendation was spot on. Also, loved the fire pit in the middle of the floor!
Review Source:Great service, great food and an awesome decor. Â The beer selection excellent. Â Under previous management the bar was closed on Sunday but it is now open for business. Â It was a great time to spend with friends; watch the game and play shuffle board. Â A must try if you haven't yet.
Review Source:The Viking has changed ownership several times since I was in college to today, but things remain pretty much the same. Â Lot's of great beers on tap at reasonable prices. Â Free popcorn and decent food. Â This place is known for being a good place to hit before a Chiefs game. Â I don't know if they still do the free glasses when you buy a pitcher on certain nights, but man I used to love that and built up quite a collection.
Review Source:A friend suggested this place - I am up in this area all of the time and didn't know this tavern was here.  We stopped for Happy Hour, before attending an event at the Lincoln Center.  Liked the interior - it feels like a neighborhood place not an overdone sports bar.  They had a great selection of beers on tap for $2.50 each during happy hour.  I enjoyed a hard cider (which many bars don't have)  Popcorn is on the tables for munching.  However, I did order a  French Dip sandwich and it was very tasty.  The only negatives were that service seemed a bit slow and the waitress didn't know much about the wine one of my friends asked about.  But she was very friendly.  I look forward to going back here again!
Review Source:Viking Version2 re-opened last week, went in last friday for their grand opening and yes the place was packed and it still looked alot like the viking of yore. Glad the carpet is gone and the floor looks nice, I was curious as to why since these are new owners and such, why the best of Inlander plaques from the previous owners were still hanging up because this is now the Viking Bar & Grill. I noticed alot of domestics beers occupying tap handles where there were once "World class beers", Saw only 2 maybe 3 beers on tap that I would say were "World Class". I was surprised that there was no Sierra Nevada products on tap much to my dismay. Â Basically what was on tap is what I can get anywhere else on tap in town that don't have unique beers on tap. The Viking was always known for having beers no one else had.The bottle selection was dismal, maybe 15 to 25 different beers and 90% looked like they were domestic. Perhaps once they get going they will try different beer vendors to expand their selection. I will make a note of it to go back in a few months and see how the beer selection is. Also they now serve hard liquor which is always a nice thing.
Review Source:My work team was looking for a local bar that we could gather at, on a Friday afternoon - relax a bit. Â The Viking is a good find - not pretentious but not scary either. Â We were pleased with their good beer selection and with particularly good bar food. Â Our favorite is their home made potato chips - down right wonderful. Â Still warm and cut really thick - they are instantly gone. Â Â Onion rings are made the way they should be - thick cut with a good batter.
a comfortable place where you need not fear for your life or feel underdressed. Â Nice staff, good service too. Â They also have pool tables and darts - next on our list to try out.
I love the Viking! The best beer selections, good food, and good service. I love a good dive bar, and this is one of my faves. I went last week and had a few delicious IPAs, an awesome burger, and some pretty good free popcorn. The bartenders are always super nice, and usually pretty knowledgable about the massive list of rotating beers on tap.
Review Source:I've been going to the Viking for 20+ years and I love its funky self. The staff is awesome regardless of who's working. Of course the micro beer selection is fab and they have a happy hour with rotating pints being $3 given the week or maybe the day. Good pub food along with free popcorn.
They have two pool tables and a shuffleboard table. Wonderful! I love all the mirrors, neons and flags. Really creates a warm pub feel.
I'm still only giving four stars for a couple of reasons: 1) the lighting is always too bright. They need a dimmer or change out the light bulbs to a lower watt. 2) the place needs a revamping; it's a bit moth-eaten. New carpet or a wood floor would be the first step.
This review is only for the food. Don't bother unless someone else is paying for it. The food here is of the lowest quality bar food I have had in Spokane. When you are sitting at a table eating and not simply drinking one of their many micros you realize just how filthy the carpet and the bar is.
Review Source:Great selection of craft beer (which was a bonus for our Bikes and Brews Crew), but being a slight germ-a-phobe, the popcorn all over the floor and the grungy decor was not for me.
Staff was great and it get looked like the other patrons were having a good time and I never thought I would be saying this, but I think I am just too old. It would have been a place that I would have hung out in all night when I was in my 20's, but not now that I am 40.
This is one of Spokane's hidden gems. Â It's a laid-back, floor covered in free pop-corn joint with good food and a great beer selection. Â Their Reuben sandwich is great and it's one of the only places in the area where you can get the beer leviathan (if you haven't tried it.... try it).
Review Source:Staff are fantastic, always friendly and helpful. Food is to die for. I mean that literally and figuratively. Literally, it probably will shave a year off your life, but it's worth it. The Reuben is amazing and I am NOT a Reuben fan. Potato appetizer is amazing as well. I've heard the Viking Burger is the best around. Might have to give it a whirl this weekend when I'm there for Trivia Night!
Review Source:Do you like young manly bars with shuffleboard and a great beer selection? Â Choose the Viking.
Now that isn't to say it isn't popular with a particular set of women, because it is. Â And it isn't a mans bar with strippers or old guys from the factory on the same seat every night. Â It is a relatively happening, but still somehow authentic place to get microbrews.
During a jaunt from downtown, the group I was with began expressing their doubts the closer we got to the Viking's exterior, but all doubts were erased once we went inside and saw the beer list. There's so much more to beer than Miler, Bud, and Coors Light (Lite), and this bar gets it. So many taps on hand and a long list of bottles, but most of our night was populated by the "mystery" beer, a tap that's served at $7 a pitcher and made for a cheap night of drinking. We figured out what the mystery beer was, though I won't spoil it here. I can say, however, that it's a solid choice, and you get your money's worth.
So many of the reviews claim that there aren't any hipsters at the place, like it's such a bad thing. I saw some people whom I think the term could apply, but the mix certainly runs the gamut. If you're looking to hobnob and trip out to "unce unce unce," you might want to stay downtown, but if you like to enjoy some good beer and the company of some friends, Viking is a great choice in Spokane.
This is a great blue collar bar and tavern that serves a bevy of sandwiches for good eats too!
I came here for lunch with 2 others, one a regular. You are immediately served with a basket of Popcorn (we had 2 for the 3 of us) which was not stale and quite salty. They have at least 9 different beers on tap, and TVs for your sports viewing. The decor is standard blue collar bar, and they have 2 pool tables and a shuffle board game, just like the old school taverns of yesteryear. If you wear plaid flannel shirts and waffle iron shoes, you will feel right at home here.
The service is friendly and polite from the staff.
We had a classic Reuben, a French Dip, and a Luau, which was a Hawaiian inspired sandwich with pineapple garnish. The sandwiches came with a choice of sides, like potato salad or fries. There are caddies with 4 squirt condiments to put on your sammich to your stomach's desire.
Sandwiches were average in composition, but just like any working man would like after a brewskie or two, there was a lot of meat inside.
Oh yeah. Great beer selection, Slayer on the juke, chill crowd and cool bartender who's into zombie movies (we both noticed what a great place Viking would be to hole up in a zombie apocalypse a la Shawn of the Dead). Â I am way down with all that. Â No 'tude, it's just kinda off the beaten path. I'll be back fer sure.
Review Source:Upon entering this fine establishment for the first time, I was awe struck by the selection of beers, the smell of popcorn, and the singing of angels coming from the shuffle board along the wall.
In a town that tries valiantly to pry itself from the "old west" stereotype by having excellent bars and restaurants with an upscale feel, it was a revelation to find a place that reminded me of my humble beginnings of rural Montana. All they are missing is the sawdust on the floor.
Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened, drink and be merry. Â Hidden in an odd part of town, out of the way, and an uninspiring exterior, I doubt you accidently find your way into the Viking. Â I missed it the first time I drove by, but I was very happy from the minute I stumbled into the place. Â The place has the personality you would expect of a solid, well-loved bar - namely, it's cozy, rugged, and has the greatest selection of beer in Spokane.
If you want beer, come here. Â The tap list is the largest and most diverse I've ever seen - they even had Lambic Framboise on tap. Â And their bottled beer selection rocks.
Free popcorn? Â Icing on the cake.
If you're looking for a place to enjoy a brew in Spokane, come here.
I have fond memories of hitting this place up during breaks from college in Seattle. Â That was over 10 years ago, and from reading the reviews, it's reassuring to know that this place is still going strong. Â
This is a great place to take old friends and get caught up over a few Bronsons. Â The beer selection simply can't be beat within the Inland Empire. (as far as I'm aware) Â
Last time I went I remember there being an old skool cigarette vending machine, how bad-ass is that?! Â Funny story about that machine: Â I usually smoke camel lights or marlboro mediums, fuck lights. Â Didn't see any camel lights so I hit the button that simply said "Camels". Â Out came the pack and I noticed it was about about an inch shorter than a normal pack. Â "Ahhh, I got fuggen gypped!" I politically incorrectly swore to myself, "I can't believe it, what kind of rip-off machine is this? Selling short cigarettes...". Â Then I proceeded to open up the pack, "Damn, I opened up the wrong end..."....flipped it over and opened up the other side.."what the... where's the damn filter?" Â Â Then it dawned on me.
I decided to light one up and take a few drags, and holy crap, my head started spinning and I became nauseous in about 2 minutes from the nicotine blast. Â I might as well have just cooked up the tobacco in a spoon with a little old Crow and then mainlined it with a hypodermic syringe.
Yes folks, that was my first experience with a camel unfiltered cig. Â Good times at the Viking....wonder if they still have that cigarette vending machine with the unfiltered Camels.
I'm not going to speak to the beer selection, since I'm not much of a drinker - but OMG - the sandwiches at this place ROCK! Â My boyfriend works nearby and will often stop at the Viking to pick up lunch for us both to go. I believe the sandwich I usually get is the "Big Bird" - a grilled turkey, bacon, and swiss masterpiece - and the fries are terrific too! If you are a fan of "skinny" - style fries, (ala McD's...and I am!) - you will love the Viking's shoestring fries - which are served lightly sprinkled with salt and pepper. The Viking offers perfect bar food - seriously yummy!
Review Source:In these sensitive times we live in, The Viking is the new pirate. A sea-faring scoundrel we can all get behind.
Don't be fooled by the odd exterior, the bar has easily the best selection of beer you will find in the greater Spokanistan area. And, unlike "other" bars, when the Viking says there is no crap on tap, they MEAN it (I'm sorry but you're not allowed to have High LIfe on tap and make this claim). Taps are mostly American Microbrews (which is very much appreciated by me) with a handful of import staples. You will also often find beer here that NO ONE else in town ever gets. They occasionally have some real rarities on tap and the taps are CONSTANTLY rotating. You can sometimes not come here for a week or two and see FIFTEEN new beers. This beer geek really appreciates that.
I don't usually name-drop for a couple reasons:
- Reviews that name drop are often done by fake-ish profiles trying to boost the score of an establishment (read: Catacombs Pub)
- I don't ever remember anyone's name
- People that name drop are often just giving a "shout out" to a friend that works there, which calls the non-biased nature of the review into question.
However, Krystal (not sure if that's how she spells her name) is one of the most intelligent, interesting, attentive, efficient, and just damn nice bartenders I have ever had. She's already incredibly knowledgeable about her beer and isn't afraid to chat it up with the beer geeks.
My only downside is that this place is quite a bit farther of a walk from my normal stomping grounds, so I don't get to go here as often as I'd like.
Protips:
- Monday: $5 pitchers of microbrewed beer, amazing deal
- Wednesday: snag a free collectible beer glass!
- Thursday: wine specials
Forgot to mention: they have free popcorn! Â This is trixy on their part as it often keeps you drinkin'
The place may look extremely shady from the outside even for Spokane standards, but this place is heaven. Plain and simple. If you happen to stop by you'll have no clue how this place remains open. They seemed to stop caring about what the place looked like 20-30 years ago, a least that's when the last update in decor seemed to have happened, but that hardly matters. When you've got a menu consisting solely of the beers in store. Wednesday nights are the best, buy a pitcher of beer (anything but the cheap macrobrews) and you get yourself a pint glass to take home. I feel somewhat ashamed that the only glasses I have in my house consist of beer related ones. There's a huge fire pit in the middle of the bar, and a shuffle board as well. The popcorn they have there is a total necessity to constantly have available (beer and popcorn- nothing better). I absolutely love that this place is hardly ever packed, they have outstanding beers on tap and in the bottle, and everyone from the customers to the bartenders are friendly. This place rocks
Review Source:Giving Beer the respect it deserves - the Viking Tavern boasts 100 Â different bottled beers and 35 beers on tap. Bring your passport and tour the world by beer at this traditional pub. The Viking tavern has been offering the best selection of common and uncommon brews along with uncommonly good grub for over 30 years.
Review Source:Great beer selection - 28 taps, many of which rotate regularly, including a seletion of local and not-so-local microbrews, and a number of imports from all over. Â Tenders are quite knowlegeable about all their beers, and they also have something like 100 different beers in bottle.
Sort of a divey atmosphere, but now that there's no more smoking inside it's a fun place. Â Reasonably loud jukebox (of the internet variety). Â Also a pool table and assorted bar games.
But go for the beer.
