A dive bar located outside a few miles from the 29 Palms Marine base. Better than not having a bar. They have 2 pool tables and one bar. Prices are cheap. It is a cash only bar. You can buy a drink and people watch and still have a good time. Drunk Marines will always do something interesting.
Review Source:Yes, this place is a dive bar. It is practically the definition of a dive bar. But I'd say it's the perfect dive bar. It's got neon beer signs, pool tables, and out of date, no-frills decor. Most importantly, the people are super friendly.
I was visiting from out of town and my boyfriend and I wanted to find a place to watch the end of the Final Four. The owner happily switched the bar TV to the appropriate channel. Every patron we met was very, very friendly. One guy even bought us a round of shots!
They have a full bar, of course, but no beer on tap, just in bottles/cans.
Great spot to meet friendly locals!
It's the middle of a pay period in this little military town, so not a lot is happening or hopping at the usual mainstays (bars) in town. I was able to have a night out sans children with my best friend. So, first we went to the Stumps, can't go wrong there. Came to the Virginian because it appeared busiest. I mean, how fun can drinking be if there isn't anyone around else to shoot the shit with? And shoot we did - there are pool tables in the Virginian. There are only two, but they're cheap (75c for a round of pool). I managed to teach my best friend how to shoot pool (also a girl), without feeling too ogled. Ok, a little ogled. Ogled enough to feel sexy, haha.
The drinks! They were fantastic, actually. I really liked the bartender and I wish I knew her name, but she was great. Friendly to the women (myself and friend) and of course friendly to the men - but only to a point. The prices were great for shots and regular drinks. I had an amaretto sour (or three...) and all were delicious. Did a few shots of 'snakebites' (whiskey + lime juice or sweet and sour) and those were mm mm good. And the best part about the bartender - she'd stop anyone who was a little too drunk, from drinking anymore. She didn't overcharge when other people got past the point of not knowing what was going on. She had class!
Definitely my favorite bar in town. Good music, good pool, great bartender and a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
*For out of towners expecting something fantastically amazing, you are looking for the wrong town. This is a little town comprised of mostly military vets and currently serving military, along with a dash of the usual (but mostly awesome) locals. Just a word. :)
