Goldthwaite town is a small place with old style food values. With that in mind, the Wagon Wheel is a early 60's style 'greasy spoon' café. It still has great old fashioned Texas style hamburgers and chicken fried steak. Great huge crispy onion rings and fried potatoes! The best of those in 40 miles around.

On the flip side, they have a daily cafeteria style steam table with mostly canned vegetables and a week (sometimes wilted) mostly iceberg lettuce salad bowl. Plus a 'brown Å„ serve' bread roll.

I wanted very badly to like the Wagon Wheel.  The facade along the highway has been begging me to stop for years, so Mrs. B and I stopped in on a Saturday.  They offered a Saturday buffet, which was kind of neat.  It featured a barbecue item and a chicken-fried steak, as well as a salad bar and some sides like mashed potatoes.  The food was OK, but nothing stuck out as being overwhelmingly delicious.  Also, the service wasn't nearly as friendly as I would expect on some of these off-the-beaten-path stops in central Texas.  Anyway, I may give the Wagon Wheel another shot, but I won't rush to do so.

First the look of this places looks like an accumulation of someones figure collection and some left over restaurant equipment. As you walk in there is a huge display of those house and building figurines that light up.

The food was eh, and maybe if I wasn't following a paleo lifestyle this would've been a whole lot.better, but it wasn't.

The salad bar was pretty sad with some salad greens a few veggies, some old Cole slaw and potato salad.

Without many options that fit the paleo lifestyle that were cost worthy (steak was $20) I chose a Burger and got my daughter an egg breakfast taco.

We got our food and it was sad. The Burger looked what to be 2-3 oz of meat and the egg taco looked like over cooked scrambled eggs in a tortilla. The Burger Patty was tasty but it wasn't very big at all. I could've gotten the same thing at  Whataburger.

Our waitress also seemed a little spaced out and it didn't make for a pleasant stop.

If you're in the mood for something fried and covered in gravy this place is worth a stop, but if you want real food its best to keep on driving til you get to Lampasas.
