Since I can't give half stars, I had to give two, but I really want to give 2.5 stars. I remember going to this restaurant for many years, since it seemed to be one of my grandparent's favorites. My dad says that the quality of the food and service has been like a roller coaster over the past many years. However, we decided to give it a shot tonight.
As far as environment goes, it is the same as I remember it. EXACTLY the same. To me, it could stand a little remodeling. But, some people don't like change, especially older people. As I looked around myself, I did notice that the majority of the patrons were probably in their 70s to 80s. There were some young bucks in there, probably in their late 50s. So, maybe this restaurant caters to that crowd.
Service was a bit slow. My water glass went empty a time or two, and stayed empty quite a bit longer than it would have at the average restaurant. That was a bit disappointing, considering the only beverage that I requested was water. Dirty dishes were a bit slow to be cleared off the table. Dessert was super slow, especially when all they had to do was put some ice cream in a dish and dump some hot fudge over it. However, I have certainly had worse service, so I really don't have anything very serious to complain about when it comes to service.
I was in the mood for crab legs, so I ordered the surf-n-turf. It came with Alaskan king crab legs and tenderloin, choice of potato, and soup or salad bar. I got garlic mashed potatoes, which were nothing to write home about. I could taste the garlic, but they were rather flavorless and I think that I would rather have had a baked potato. The salad bar was a normal salad bar and there was an extra section with some pasta salads and other types of salads. The crab legs were good. The flavor was good, the texture was good. They didn't taste fishy and they seemed to be good quality. The steak was a sirloin that I requested to be cooked medium rare. It was cooked properly. However, there were some crispy spots on the outside, which I am not a big fan of. I am also not a huge fan of that cut of meat, but it was certainly edible. The dessert was just ice cream with some hot fudge. You can't really go wrong there. However, the whipped cream on top did not taste like real whipped cream, which is kinda gross.
This restaurant is very average. Nothing horrible about it, and nothing great about it. If I ever want crab legs again, I guess I would go back. But, I will probably try a bit harder to find another place that serves crab legs first.
