I had high hopes for Westsound Cafe. Â We'd been meaning to come in for dinner for years and were really looking forward to it, however we left feeling let down. Â The cafe is attractive with good views and nice decor - unfortunately our same day reservation got us the worst table in the place - but it happens. Â The server was friendly and attended to us fairly quickly - that was about the last we saw of her. Â Wine selection was lacking but we got a bottle anyway and it was sub-par. Â We had 2 appetizers. Â One was good and the other was pretty bad. Â Mine, the calamari, was pretty bland and tasted just a bit "off" as in not fresh - fishy. Â I had a steak that was cooked properly but tasted of gas. Â My wine was never poured, no one asked how the meal was, and my water sat empty (after asking the waitress for more) until I'd completed my meal. Â It wasn't horrid and maybe worth a shot. Â I've heard good things also from people I respect so it might have just been our experience.
Review Source:So disappointed in this place. Â 4 of us went to dinner here. Â The setting and atmosphere here is very nice. Â The service was terrible. Â I ordered steak and fries. Â As soon as it was set in front of me my kids each grabbed a fry. Â They both commented on how cold the fries were. Â I asked the waitress if I could get new fries. Â 25 minutes later my family was done. Â I still had no fries and now my steak was cold. Â When I walked up to her she said that I didn't understand how a restaurant works and that my fries order goes to the back of the line behind all the other orders. Â There were a few other issues with the service, but this was the main complaint. Â I called and left 4 messages for the manager to call me. Â He never did. Â Once I finally got ahold of him he said it is hard to find good servers on the island and that as a manager he had to bite his tongue with his staff because of it. Â He also went on to say that he is unhappy with one of their cooks, but what was he to do? That certainly didn't make me feel like returning either.
Review Source:This cafe is spectacular! It's a charming restaurant with views of the west sound.
We had the fish tacos and the prawn puttanesca. Boy were they delicious. A must try! Â It was also reasonably priced and good sized portions. Gotta love that.
As far as the wait staff and the decor, I have no idea what the other reviewer is talking about?!?
The waitstaff were friendly and offered great suggestions. They also were very attentive to our table with all smiles.
The decor, as I later found out, are hand made ceramics and definitely not something that could be found at a store. There is also a beautiful hand made quilt above the doorway that leads to the deck dining! Again, what was this reviewer talking about?
I loved this little spot and will absolutely visit again.
Beautiful Setting for dinner! We did not have reservations, however we were able to get a great window table which overlooks the sound. There were binoculars in the window so you could view wildlife, which I thought was a nice touch. We ate fish and chips which were good. They only serve Manhattan Style Clam Chowder which I did not care for.
Over all, I thought this place was a little overpriced, but this was my first experience here and I will probably try it again the next time on the Island.
The Westsound Cafe - Kingfisher Inn with its perfect idyllic location, elegant and classic decor, simple but well though menu is guaranteed to leave you with a content "Wow! I just had a wonderful dinner" feeling.
The cafe was where I took some friends over the weekend and I ended up here on a recommendation from some friends I made on the ferry ride to the Orcas Islands. After a day of driving around in the Orcas when we were deciding on where to go for dinner I gave the place a call and was lucky enough to get a reservation to the restaurant for the same evening, though I had to come in a little early around 5:30 PM for dinner as the next availability after that was for 8:30 PM.
The restaurant is around 2 miles west from the main road on Orcas Island.
There is parking for around 6 cars outside the restaurant and there is plenty of additional street parking available.
The food is a mix of contemporary American, fresh Sea Food, with a dash of Mexican. They have a decent wine selection and the open bar also gets par for the course marks.
This night we started with some really well made lemonade and iced tea which was really refreshing after a long day in the sun. Next came shrimp piri piri from the appetizer menu. We had started of well as the shrimp was tender and the sauce and bread were great accompaniment. Next for our entrees we had the fish tacos, and the portabello mushroom burger (the one option for vegetarians). The fish tacos came with 3 tacos and were really scrumptious, delicious and light. The portabello mushroom again tasted as good as it did because they had a whole mushroom well cooked and some great seasoning with it. Then for dessert came the bread pudding which was one of the best bread puddings I have ever had.
The great staff, the setting sun, classic small hammock ambiance and all wood decor all did add to the positive experience we had.
At the end of it all I feel that it is the fact that they did the simple things right that left me with such a great dining experience. Kudos!
I get it, you take your mom here, everything seems so nice, but really, is it? Â No, look around, all these decorations are cheesy and unoriginal, I think you can order them at TJMAX. Â The waitstaff looks nice, but are they? Â NO. Â No introduction, no smiles, they might even talk down to you your entire meal. Â Listen, I work hard, and when I'm out no a date the last thing I want to feel is like I am being judged by my waitress, especially when she is the one delivering incorrect information (told me the wrong veggie of the day and didn't know portion sizes of anything). Â
The food: Â steak portion was small, but tasty, burger and fries were great (and a steal at $11), the sockeye salmon ($21) was TASTELESS and lukewarm-COLD, the cous-cous was overcooked, and overall the dish was lame - its hard to screw up salmon, but they achieved it. Â I admit, she casually offered the kitchen could remake it, while also mentioning they were incredibly busy (it wasn't that croweded--why are you so "busy"?? Â waitress also wasn't patient with ordering, acted/stated that she had things to do), like I would be putting them out bc they can't make the food right the first time.
Definitely not a one-star, but I wouldn't go back. Â I am sure other people have a fine time, but too bad I caught them on an off night. Â
C'mon island, you can do better.
We dropped in (with a reservation) at the height of the tourist season and found that the place was pretty overwhelmed. Â The food is still tasty but the kitchen and the servers find it hard to keep up with the crush. Â We waited 45 minutes for two iceburg wedge salads and another 45 for fairly simple dinners. Â Come back in the fall and things should be better.
Review Source:I recently dropped by this nice little cafe in the quiet nook of Westsound, looking for some breakfast and findin some great comfort food. Although it's often hard to judge a restaurant by its breakfast, the eggs on my hobo hash were poached perfectly. The biscuits on the side were incredible as well, and the hash itself was put together nicely. Service is friendly, basically your informal diner-style, with unlimited coffee refills, although the restaurant is a bit nicer than your typical diner. I can't speak for the other meals here (having not tried them), but I can heartily recommend breakfast! Side note: look for parking on Deer Harbor road.
Review Source:Eat here! From the first taste of the morning coffee you know this is a winner. Excellent in all categories: service, coffee, breakfast, location and decor. Great choices on the tempting menu, food is tasty, prepared and presented very nicely. Service is quick, friendly and knowledgable and prices are reasonable.
Review Source:We stopped by before heading back to Seattle and I'm glad we did. The cafe is cozy with views of the bay and the customers were a mix of locals and visitors. The breakfast menu seemed pretty standard but once our plates arrived it proved to be even better. The potatoes were perfectly crisp and the omelet was fluffy. My favorite was the honey butter and local coffee - sooooo good! We'll share a plate on our next visit as the portions are huge, although it didn't stop us from finishing every last crumb this time.
Review Source:Busy Busy Busy, one of 2 West Island eateries (deer harbor being the other only real viability) so make reservations and make them early.
Great dining room, with great atmosphere, we were seated at a group table with an older couple and had a blast sharing stories. I had their Sausage plate that came with some great cheese and the sausage was pretty good. My wife had the clam chowder...which was a little light on the clam but still pretty good.
Great by the glass wine list, and all of the other diners dishes looked excellent.
Remember, get reservations.
We were sent here by the owner of Blue Moon Farms and I was glad that we took her suggestion and called ahead otherwise we would have never been able to get in. Some of the best calimari I've had in ages with a great cilantro aioli. So good that we got some more to put on our halibut fish tacos which were pretty good. Although I would have liked a side of something to go with it. A little pricey but very tasty.
Review Source:Great find!
Outside of the core Eastsound area, the Westsound Cafe holds its own. Full of a mix of locals and tourists, it was surprisingly crowded for a Wednesday night.
The halibut fish tacos were light, simple, and well prepared. I regret not going with the Fish and Chips as I was pretty hungry and they looked amazing.
My father in-law ordered the grilled salmon--very nice.
I tried my wife's steak sandwich--it was well seasoned, delicious, and melted in my mouth. Â Many places tend to do chewier steak sandwiches--not here.
The onion rings are great.
The waitresses are just cute enough to make you consider leaving "the big city."
I am normally stingy with the stars, but this is as good as it gets on the island.
We had a killer lunch here. Â Beer-Tempura-Battered fish sandwich was awesome. Â The wife had a great salad. Â Top notch ingredients. Â
not cheap but the view is worth it. (The Kingfish Inn / Westsound Cafe overlooks the harbor. Â It has a wrap around deck covered in flowers.)
Family owned/operated. Â We will be back.
This is the best for breakfast/lunch on Orcas. Anything whipped up by the owners is sure to please... anything off the menu is delicious and I am generally very picky. I wouldn't modify a single dish. Adorable environment and gorgeous view of the water. If you venture to Orcas, you better make it over to Westsound and experience this gem!
Review Source:This restaurant is the dining room for the KingFish Inn, a quaint little spot on the west side of Orcas Island. The food here is absolutely delicious, and not crazy overpriced as it is at other places on the island. I recommend the halibut tacos--they're fresh and light, with a little surprise kick from some smoked chipotle cream. I didn't order dessert but regretted it as soon as I saw what was coming out of the kitchen. Next time, I'll pace myself!
