The Westsound Cafe

I had high hopes for Westsound Cafe.  We'd been meaning to come in for dinner for years and were really looking forward to it, however we left feeling let down.  The cafe is attractive with good views and nice decor - unfortunately our same day reservation got us the worst table in the place - but it happens.  The server was friendly and attended to us fairly quickly - that was about the last we saw of her.  Wine selection was lacking but we got a bottle anyway and it was sub-par.  We had 2 appetizers.  One was good and the other was pretty bad.  Mine, the calamari, was pretty bland and tasted just a bit "off" as in not fresh - fishy.  I had a steak that was cooked properly but tasted of gas.  My wine was never poured, no one asked how the meal was, and my water sat empty (after asking the waitress for more) until I'd completed my meal.  It wasn't horrid and maybe worth a shot.   I've heard good things also from people I respect so it might have just been our experience.

So disappointed in this place.  4 of us went to dinner here.  The setting and atmosphere here is very nice.  The service was terrible.  I ordered steak and fries.  As soon as it was set in front of me my kids each grabbed a fry.  They both commented on how cold the fries were.  I asked the waitress if I could get new fries.  25 minutes later my family was done.  I still had no fries and now my steak was cold.  When I walked up to her she said that I didn't understand how a restaurant works and that my fries order goes to the back of the line behind all the other orders.  There were a few other issues with the service, but this was the main complaint.  I called and left 4 messages for the manager to call me.  He never did.  Once I finally got ahold of him he said it is hard to find good servers on the island and that as a manager he had to bite his tongue with his staff because of it.  He also went on to say that he is unhappy with one of their cooks, but what was he to do? That certainly didn't make me feel like returning either.

This cafe is spectacular! It's a charming restaurant with views of the west sound.

We had the fish tacos and the prawn puttanesca. Boy were they delicious. A must try!  It was also reasonably priced and good sized portions. Gotta love that.

As far as the wait staff and the decor, I have no idea what the other reviewer is talking about?!?

The waitstaff were friendly and offered great suggestions. They also were very attentive to our table with all smiles.

The decor, as I later found out, are hand made ceramics and definitely not something that could be found at a store. There is also a beautiful hand made quilt above the doorway that leads to the deck dining! Again, what was this reviewer talking about?

I loved this little spot and will absolutely visit again.
