We came in on a Saturday, and were told the whole place was booked for a band. Â Great for them, bad for us a guess. Â They let us sit at the bar for a beer or two. Â the building was great and I will go back to update this review, on the hopes that this was just a fluke day. Â our group had a captain and coke, white Russian, and two vodka cranberries. Â All of them were very weak, to the point of having to ask to get a little more. Â I know some places have pouring standards the live by, but I'm not a fan of not getting my moneys worth no matter what the situation is. Â The bar tender was incredibly nice, and showed us around. Â The upstairs great, has a cool feel, and even has a TV that shows the bands down stairs. Â I will be back Whippoorwill, and I will update the Yelp world accordingly.
Review Source:I live in Nashville, but grew up in Sumner Co. I've been to the Whip a handful of times and can safely say there's nothing like this in Gallatin. It's my understanding the kitchen has gone through changes since it has opened, and frankly speaking, Gallatin seems to just never go to the historic square for dining and never has. The other posters are right about it being stellar atmosphere. You cannot go wrong with the bar. This is easily the coolest spot to rent for private parties or events. There is a beautiful, stainless steel bar downstairs, covered in original, decorative tin (as are the ceilings) and the upstairs room has a smaller bar and upstairs deck outside.
Review Source:I really appreciate the way this restaurant maintained its former identity. Â It was one of those soda shop pharmacies..back when you could get a root beer float while waiting for your penicillin. Â Now you sit at the bar and wait for you moonshine margarita. Â Ive had "The Hutchins" twice. Â Great steak! Â And I love their homemade potato chips. Â I think this upcoming summer is going to be a really good one for the Whip! The place is an oasis that, unfortunately, has to compete with boring chain restaurants. Â As someone who lived in New Orleans and San Francisco, this place is very up my alley.
Review Source:Let me start by saying that we had high hopes for the Whippoorwill and wished the owners a great success.  Businesses of this type are few in Gallatin and we'd love a new place to go.  Walking in, we really liked the "feel" of the place and were immediately greeted by Jenny(?), who was also our waitress.  The decor and Jenny would be the best things about this place.  We went on Thursday night arriving about 5:45 for dinner.  Our waitress immediately gave us menus and took our drink and appetizer order.  When she brought our drinks, we gave our food order; a  Cali burger and the alfredo.  A few minutes later she came back to say that they started charging a $6 cover this week to pay for the band.  I said the band wasn't til 7 and we'd be done by then.  She went to talk with the owner who said they would "allow" us to stay until 6:30 without paying the cover.  Note there were 2 larger parties, one other couple and lots of empty tables.  My first inclination was to just cancel our dinner order, finish our drinks and go elsewhere.  I should have gone with my instinct.  Our chicken wing app was not to my liking at all, swimming in wing sauce.  Our dinners came out quickly and were mediocre for the $10-15 price range.  I have never heard of a restaurant charging diners an extra $6 cover an hour before a band even arrives to set up.  We quickly ate 1/2 of our meal and packed up the rest to go, so that we could be out by 6:30.  Having ate half my burger I started experiencing severe stomach pain.  By the time we walked out the door to our car, I could barely stand up.  Needless to say, food poisoning, and you can imagine how I have spent the night and morning.  Sadly, we will not be stepping foot back in the Whippoorwill.  I hope they can get their act together and decide whether they want to be a bar or a restaurant.  Judging by the food quality, they should go with the bar.
Review Source:The first time my wife and I went after recently moving into the area. They had a live performer and apparently the place was all reserved no mention of making reservations on their website. The staff said they would check for an open table and never came back. We left disappointed.
We went back hesitantly to check out the food. They were playing football on the large big screen. We both had the Organic Tomato Soup expecting to have a thick creamy, full of flavorful soup and received what looked like it was poured out of a tomato soup can and added too much water. My wife ordered the Roasted Vegetable Wrap which was more lettuce than vegetables. I had the Turkey Panini and that is ALL that was on it was a little turkey some cheese and mayonnaise. Even asking for an un-sweet tea was tasking as I took a drink to find a sweet tea.
This place could be so much more but lacks some culinary skill and training.
Disappointing...but has great potential. Â This is a great little place in a historical building on the square in Gallatin. They tout rated 'best restaurant in Sumner County'...who decides on that anyway? I invited a couple of dear friends I don't often see to meet me there because I really wanted to try it. We were the guinea pigs for sure. Service was slow, but friendly.
The food menu is confused with the ambience...is it a bar/live music venue/art gallery or nice dinner out kind of place? Â Cute little place with a personality, however, it just seems they need to pick an identity and capitalize on it.
I had the cali burger, which sounded fabulous (guac and herb mayo) but the bun was semi-stale and too much for the sandwich. Meat was a little overcooked and the herbed mayo was the only thing that burger truly had going on. The 'herbed potato salad' side was mostly creamy goo without a lot of flavor or potato. My friends both got a version of steak which they said was flavored ok, but tough. Â And one did not even finish his mashed potatotes...a bad sign for those mashed potatoes.
the place was busy with lots of sports fans and that seemsed to fit the place's personality best. Â I think Whippoorwill could be great, if they focused on one style..maybe great bar foods and a couple focused dishes for those that want the 'nice dinner' out.
