We visited this great little place while on vacation from Las Vegas, Nevada. Â Like all the tourists, we had to order the Fried Green Tomatoes and had unsweetened Iced Tea to drink. Â The tomatoes were very good, but a little pricey (to be expected at tourist place). Â We would give the food an average 3 rating but the 4 rating is due to the location itself. Â Since we are fans of the movie, we loved the location, seeing the bar-b-que place outside and sitting on the porch. Â It is also the locate of a virtual Geocache relating to the move so it was a score for us all the way around...we had a great time!
Review Source:We've eaten at Whistle Stop twice to fulfill our craving for Fried Green Tomatoes. Â They are always served hot, have a great crust, and the side sauce has just enough heat. Â Wonderful! Â Last time I tried the collards, which were cooked just right - not mushy - but they could have been served a little hotter. Â The corn bread pudding is like a dessert and delicious. Â Not crowded, but there was a steady stream of guests, and a few of the staff seemed a little overwhelmed, but the take-out service was still good. Â We'll be regulars!
Review Source:The wait staff were a delight and very knowledgable about the movie, filming of the movie at the restaurant and local history. Â The country fried steak was the best I have ever had - tender, savory.... I wish I could get the recipe! Â The veggies were also very yummy. Â As a southern girl raised in this kind of country cooking, it was like eating at my grandmother's table again. Â The cornbread was very dry, but that is the thing I would change.
We will definitely be back!
Best country fried steak w/ pepper gravy I've had in a long long time. Cream corn was so fresh and tasty. Biscuits were fluffy and buttery. Fried green tomatoes were very well done as they should be. Â FGT came with a really good peppery sort of spicy remoulade. As usual, we had no room for desert but they looked so so fine. Â Â Â Â
This was not the mediocre tourist trap that I sort of expected, but a place that obviously takes great pride on doing things right. No shortcuts on cooking or service.
The Whistle Stop Cafe is where they filmed the famous movie "Fried Green Tomatoes." This golden Georgia gem is worth leaving the interstate and forgoing cell phone service for an hour or two of absolute blissful heaven.
The building in which is the Whistle Stop Cafe today, was originally a general store. They turned into into a restaurant specifically in order to film "Fried Green Tomatoes." The owner of the building then decided to open the doors and really run the "original" Whistle Stop Cafe. I remember stores and restaurants like this from when I was little in south Georgia. You won't find many like this anymore. It's authentic with food for the movie buffs soul and to-die-for eats for the stomach.
Last visit we ordered: Fried green tomatoes and fried okra for an appetizer. Sweet tea in mason jars. Me: Fried chicken, mac n cheese, sweet potato souffle. Him: Country fried steak with gravy, lima beans and collard greens.
I'm an legit, fried chicken, collard green eating Georgia Peach; this place beats them ALL!
If you are looking for an iconic piece of film Americana to dine at, this is it. Â While other places like Planet Hollywood have to constantly remind you about how cool the movies are, Whistle Stop Cafe only has one film poster and a few pictures on the wall to remind you that Fried Green Tomatoes was shot here.
As if to remind you of the past, both mine and the better half's Cell Phones had "No Service" so our check ins came down the street at the Church(!) where we had coverage again.
Our waitress might as well have been a non-movie star version of Anna Paquin complete with a darling southern accent and slightly sideways smile.
It is a bit off the beaten path, but it is also surrounded by several local shops to make your visit to Juliette worth your time. Â The area has a charm that makes it worth visiting.
I had the following: fried green tomatoes for appetizer, grilled cheese, sweet potato fries w/cinnamon. Â Everything was pretty good & I would go back again. Â I really enjoyed the fried green tomatoes & you can tell they have perfected them. Â The sauce that comes along with them adds some great flavor. Â The sweet potato fries were very sweet, but good & my grilled cheese was pretty good. Â Overall the restaurant was quaint and the waitress was very nice & told us a bit about the movie being filmed in the town. Â If you are ever in Juliette I'd stop by and eat their signature fried green tomatoes.
Review Source:Whistle Stop Cafe is an iconic restaurant in Georgia. Â The movie "Fried Green Tomotoes" was filmed here and that most definitely put this tiny town on the map!!
I had lunch here on a Saturday and the place was packed! I would not recommend coming here if you have a large party (more than 4) because there are only 2 places they can seat large groups. Â We ended up waiting at least an hour for our table of 7ppl. Â
The restaurant is cute inside with photos of the movie. Â Two walls are lined with 4 person booths and in the middle is a large counter where people can sit. Â
To start we shared the Fried Green tomatoes and they were delicious! Very fresh and the sauce served with them was great. Â It was a cross between a remoulade & bbq sauce. Â I also had a sweet tea which is served in a cute mason jar!
Everyone at our table had  meat & sides as their meal.  The meats are: fried chicken, chicken livers, tilapia, country fried steak and pork chop.  I'm sure the sides change daily, but what was offered when I was there was:  squash & onions, beets, sweet potato souffle, collard greens, garlic mashed potatoes, lima beans, vegatable soup, corn pudding and a few other items.  Along with your meal you get either a roll or cornbread.
I had the best fried chicken ever! Â It was moist and crispy with the perfect seasonings. Â For my sides I had squash & onion which tasted very fresh and then the sweet potato souffle which tasted like dessert with brown suger and pecans - yum!!!
I highly recommend stopping by the Whistle Stop Cafe if you have seen the movie. Â It was fun to see parts of the movie come to life!
What's better than drinking out of mason jars and "served hot" fried green tomatoes in a restaurant were characters you never knew but came to know hung out...well maybe not the whistle stop food, but still.
We wanted to go on a road trip and on our little trip we made this our lunch stop. On our way in we were greeted by an old white cat, that definitely never had been fixed. It was a weekday, and there weren't tons of people there so booths were open, which is nice. The restaurant looks just like it did in the movie, with the exception of a few movie related things that would not have hung on the walls.
The iced tea was REALLY good, so if you like iced tea this is the place to order it. We ordered the friend green tomatoes as an appetizer, because what's the point of stopping by if you aren't even going to order the food that made the franchise?
They were definitely served hot, which at first is a little over whelming to your taste bugs, so I wasn't sure what they tasted like when I took the first bite, the second bite though, was great. I'm not going to say that they were the best fried green tomatoes I've ever had, because they weren't, but they were very good. The fried green tomatoes weren't really beautiful, and the sauce they came with wasn't special, but those green tomatoes didn't need accessories with the sauce or a face lift with their appearance to taste great. Not too greasy or too heavily fried, they were just right.
I ordered the fried green tomato sandwich and fried okra. The sandwich was a bit over powering of the the tomatoes, but the bread was very good. I was kinda let down by the fried okra. It wasn't bad, but I made fried okra so much better, and as I ate it I noticed that the okra itself wasn't really cooked completely, and the batter they used was kinda boring. The chicken fingers are huge, so take that into consideration when you order, I mean if those really were chicken fingers, we would be living in a Jules Verne novel. The french fries were pretty good, and the BLT is a little lacking on the "B".
Overall I would go back, but I wouldn't order the fried okra again, and I would let the fried green tomatoes cool just a tad. It was a fun trip, and it's worth going, even if mostly for the movie history.
While trying to find the end of the internet one afternoon, I discovered that there really WAS a Whistle Stop Cafe. Â And, much to my pleasure, it was a little over an hour away from where I live. Â So I called up my Mom, seeing that this is one of our fave movies and was all, "Dude, Fried Green Tomatoe's. Saturday. You down?"
So, we got on the road and headed out. Â If you have a GPS unit, I'd suggest leaving it on for reassurance. Â I'm from the back roads country of Tennessee, so I knew, eventually, there would be a sign telling me the road would end at the cafe. Â At some point (and it did!).
Anyway,
We roll up to McCrackin Street (heh), park the car and get out in the sweltering heat (91 degrees by 10 AM). Â Juliette is really only a block long (or at least, where the movie is). Â The cafe opens at 11am and when we got to the steps, there was already a crowd (specifically, a group of ladies wearing red hats, if you're familiar with the poem). Â Luckily they didn't trample my Mom and I and we were able to grab a booth in the back.
Things to note- the cafe really has remained just the way it was in the movie (save for that movie poster on the left wall) and it's hot in there. Â Real hot. Â They do have one AC unit, which may help if you're sitting close to it. Â I didn't mind though. Â The bathroom isn't air conditioned either- so be prepared to feel like you're roasting to death. Â Hopefully you won't have to use it after someone pinched a loaf. Â Whew.
What to eat? Obviously the Fried Green Tomatoe's. Â I found them perfectly sliced, battered just enough and hot enough to burn my freakin mouth (I couldn't wait for them to cool off). Â They weren't greasy or over done. Â Perfect, in my opinion.
I opted for Bennett's BBQ and when the sandwich came out, I thought, "You've gotta be kidding me, there's no way I can finish this." Â Seriously, it was probably 2 cups of pork on that roll. Â The sauce came separate, which I like. Â Because sometimes you just don't know what the sauce is going to taste like and it can either make or break a pulled pork sandwich for me.
It was awesome.
And for dessert, the peach cobbler. Â While it was tasty delicious, I was kind of bummed that the portion size was small (not that I need a lot of cobbler, but yknow).
The city was also holding "Juliette Idol" in front of the coffee shop! Â So if you do decide to go, check it out on a Saturday mid afternoon/evening so you can catch the locals try and win a shot at some studio time in Macon. Â Our waitress said the competition is going on through July, if you're interested!
Also, I suggest you stop by the Honeybee shop to pick up some Moonshine Jelly on your way out. Â
Yes, MOONSHINE. Â
Yes, JELLY.
Do it. Â At $2.95 a jar, it's a deal.
For me, I'd go back. Â Especially if any of my girlfriends roll into town and want to check it out. Â It's a fun day trip and a cool little place to get lost in.
I am so sorry to review this one so low, but I gotta say I was a little disappointed in the food. The movie was good and my wife has insisted we go check the place out. It is great, looks just like it did in the movie. The staff was extremely pleasant and I would give them 4 stars without the food. The Fried green tomatoes were defiantly hot, but some of the greasiest I have ever had, ask them to give you ranch dressing if you want to dip them, their sauce leaves a little short on desirability. The french fries were the great shoestring type (I love shoestring fries), but you could pick them up and watch grease come off. The sweet tea was good though.
Yall Come back now ya here!
I don't care about the movie but I had some family with me that absolutely loves the show. Â I drove off the main highway and I drove and drove. Â The others with me kept telling me to forget it. Â The whistle stop probably wasn't even there anymore. Â But I kept driving. Â We came over a hill and right there in this tiny town of Juliette was the Whistle Stop Cafe just as it appeared in the movie. Â This is the actual cafe and neighborhood used in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes." Â My family loved the atmosphere. Â It was 90 degrees and there is no air condition in the restaurant. Â The heat added realism of historic Southern life. Â The train tracks are just outside and the train rolled by during our lunch -nice touch. Â There was a gift shop down the street. Â The grave site where they buried one of the characters is just outside.
What did  I eat?  Fried Chicken and fried green tomatoes.  And it was very good.  Worth a stop if you're a fan of the movie.
If you loved the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes", you have to eat here. This is the Whistle Stop Cafe that was featured in the movie. Yes, they do have fried green tomatoes on the menu. Menu is mostly home style country cooking. Try the "hog wings".
It can get busy on the weekends but you can sit on the front porch and watch the people on main street. There are some shops to browse thru and a motorcycle museum at the old mill.
