Overall: Very cute little place; outstanding muffins; good coffee; good sugar (short-bread?) cookies.
Lemon Something: Outstanding. Â I really expected this to be super-sweet, but oh man no no no. Â They got it just right, just the right balance between the sweetness and the lemon-ness, with soft great tasting dough on top and bottom. Â And it was just beautifully cooked too. Â The very tops of the dough's little mounds were a golden brown, but nothing was overdone. Â I never had anything like it.
Apple-caramel muffin: Outstanding. Â There was some sort of caramel glaze on the top - definitely not like icing on a cupcake, but more like the glaze on a, well, a glazed donut. Â The rest of the muffin was slightly sweetened, and just the right amount of moist. Â Too good.
Orange-cranberry muffin: Outstanding. Â Again, just the right amount of moist, not greasy at all, perfectly cooked, and could taste the orange and cranberry both. Â
Yellow Duck Cookie: Outstanding. Â Very (and appropriately) sweet icing on top of a somewhat (and appropriately) dry and sweet cookie. Â These rival the cookies at the Firehook cafes in Alexandria VA.
Coffee: Great. Â They use the locally roasted coffee from the Eastern Shore Coastal Roasting Co. Â It tasted very fresh.
Super cute place for kids too. Â They have some little play things set out, and they yellow duck theme is something little kids will love.
My wife and I got a half-dozen muffins to go. Â You can freeze them. Â :)
With a blueberry, a maple walnut, an Amish friendship, a lemon poppy seed, and a pumpkin cream cheese muffin packed into a sturdy white box, I knew I'd bought an adequate 3-day weekend taste sampling from Yellow Duck Cafe Bakery. Â Staying on Virginia's Eastern Shore in the off-season limits food options but now I had my emergency rations. Â Just to be safe, I also picked up a lemon bar, an almond cookie and some coffee. Â I enjoyed the lemon bar in the car with their delicious coffee. That bar was fifteen square inches of lemony joy. A crispy crust topped with perfect lemon filling and a dusting of powdered sugar. Wish I had another one right now.
With the muffins, I'll summarize this review by saying each of these muffins was the best of that muffin I've ever had! Â They were moist, full of flavor, generous with relevant ingredients (walnuts, blueberries, etc.) and just made me happy I'd found the Yellow Duck. Â I especially loved the maple walnut and blueberry. They had the perfect muffin tops that every muffin-lover enjoys.
I'm anxious to come back for another trip and know I'll be returning to Yellow Duck.
It is very hard to compare the Yellow Duck Bakery Cafe to the bakeries that I am used to in Philadelphia. Â So, I must delete my visions of cannoli, and German pound cake, warm gooey sticky buns, and the other delights found in the bakeries of my home town to write this review of Yellow Duck. Â It was O.K.. Â Not what I was expecting. Â Just O.K. Â If you want some brownies, or a muffin and some blah coffee, Yellow Duck is...well, again O.K. Â And closed Sunday. Â Who ever heard of a bakery closed on Sunday? Â So, if you are in the area, you may want to stay on Rt 13 and pass this one by. Â Pick up some packaged brownies or Tastycakes at the Royal Farms. Â Just as good, and the coffee is fresher.
