i've eaten here twice.  the first time i ordered a steak and it wasn't cooked properly because they hand cut their steaks and whoever was doing the cutting must have had the alcoholic shakes.  last night i ate a reuben sandwich and it was the worst rueben i've ever eaten.  the meat was awful and tasted manufactured and there was some kind of nasty cheese sauce on it.  it sat in my stomach like a rock all evening.  never going back.

We used to eat at 54 frequently but have stopped since the food has become bland and tastes worse than bar food and the menu never changes, its so Smokey you taste it in your food

Family style casual bar. Similar to an applebees or tgif. Food was pretty good, nothing special. Servers had no idea what kind of beers they had. Overall just a decent place.

We have been here for dinner twice now and it's just ok. The menu is wayyyyy too big, it seriously takes up half the table. The first time I tried the half rack of ribs and chicken tender combo with a side of coleslaw and bbq beans. Both meats did not impress me, the chicken was mostly fried breading and way too salty. The ribs were soft and tender but the flavor was odd. Coleslaw has some type of dill pickle flavoring that I hated. BBQ beans were good though.

Last night we went back and I tried the grilled chicken alfredo pasta. I was surprised it came with such big pieces of vegetables in it. But the taste was decent and I was happy. I do love their sweet potato fries with the guacamole ranch sauce. And the gringo dip is good too.

This place reeks of cigarette smoke because one half is smoking and tons of people sit around the bar eating with a cigarette in their hand... I guess I am just spoiled with Arizona's no smoking anywhere policy!

My self and a friend were coming back from KC and decided to stop in St. Joseph for lunch. On the interstate we saw nothing, but signs for chain restaurants. I don't eat at chain restaurants at home very often and sure am not going to do so out of town. We see a sign for something called 54th St. Cafe and figure that is local. We drive to it and end up in an awful suburban outdoor shopping Disneyland type of place. Sure enough this place looks like just another Chilli's. We go in (there was nothing but chains around and we were on a time line) and it is much worse. The walls are junked up with every knick knack, poster, and piece of junk imaginable....it is everywhere!  It is even embedded into the bar. This is my biggest pet peeve. If you build up your junk over 30 years...great...if you junk up your walls before opening...it's sterile and I know what kind of food I will be eating. We were told there were only bar seats available and this was fine. My friend asked for a couple of craft beers to see if they had them on tap...they had your basic "one kind of Boulevard and one Goose Island". He ordered a beer and I ordered a coffee. I ordered what I thought would be the safest dish-a grilled chicken breast on rice with mushrooms and mashed potatoes and gravy on the side. Bartender was friendly and attentive...our food arrived in a very acceptable time frame.  The mushrooms were left off of my dish (no time to send back)...the chicken was covered with this glop of what passes as cheese at these places and the chicken was tough and marinated to the taste of trying to cover up something. The rice was cooked fine and plentiful. The mashed potatoes had a pasty bland country gravy and that was just plain inedible. My friend is the most anal eater in the world....it has to be right for him. He ordered the salmon....a dish he is most picky about...and I feared a plate flying across the room at this joint. To my surprise he enjoyed his entire meal and had nothing but compliments about the food. So, there is that...maybe beyond the horrible decor there is some hope in the kitchen here. Another thing is that you can still smoke here. I do not smoke anymore, but love restaurants and bars filled with smoke...this is how it should be...so that was nice.

54th is basically a Chili's, but with a turn-of-the-century saloon atmosphere as opposed to a Southwest atmosphere.

The Cajun salmon is tasty - comes with a chipotle aoili. The service was pretty spot-on.

I've only been to a 54th St three times, this one twice, and it is packed every time.  The food is worth the wait.  I actually can't wait to return several times so I can try all of their club sandwich varieties!

How much do I love 54th Street?  So much that I get takeout from here almost every Friday night.  While there are several menu items that I like, my absolute favorite is the chicken nachos that are drenched in gringo dip.  Yeah, they aren't healthy -- but I run on Saturday mornings, so that's how I justify it to myself.  I've always had nothing but the best service and experiences here.
