This is the first 'one star' review I have ever given. This place actually deserves zero stars after the dining experience I had. Finding a huge hair in the food was not the only misfortune my dinner party had encountered. Â
My parents took my fiance and myself out to dinner while on vacation. They suggested The Adobe because it has a reputation for being upscale. The whole resort looked very old and outdated. Once inside, we were seated and had a great view of the ocean. We were all very excited for our meal. We all started with the salad bar and were very pleased with the quality. While we finished our salads, we were unaware it would be our last happy moment at The Adobe.
I ordered the halibut fillet which came with a pineapple, watermelon salsa. The salsa was so inedible. I had to scrape it all off. The halibut was so over cooked, the texture was more like squid. I could not eat more than a few bites. My mother ordered an alfredo dish. She mentioned that the alfredo tasted burnt, after I tried a bite, we agreed it was defiantly burnt and should of never been served. Just at that moment my stepfather found a very long HAIR in his food. Not just a small little hair, this thing was a monster and mixed into all the seafood. He immediately got up and took his plate of hairy food to the manager.
After a few minutes, the manager came to our table to talk to us. In stead of being apologetic, she started being aggressive and rude. She proclaimed that everyone in the kitchen was wearing a hairnet. Defensively she said, "There was no way the hair was from anyone on the staff," and then she looked at my mother in a very accusing way. We were all very sure the manager was suggesting my mother put the hair in the food. I could not believe it!
She reached her hand straight out over the table and loudly said, "If you are unhappy with your dinner please give it to me right now and you will not be charged." She was so aggressive it made us all feel like we did something wrong. I have never been treated so poorly in my life. I am very happy to pay for a good dining experience. I do not have to lie to get out of paying the bill. The manager did not apologize and we will never return again. Â
Please do yourself a favor, I would stay away from this place.
We had breakfast this last Sunday, and because it's "off season" the Sunday brunch buffet was not available (I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the brunch experience). But this "normal" breakfast was nothing to write home about. The coffee was bitter (diner quality), and the hash browns were undercooked and greasy. The house made biscuit on the other hand was something divine - I could have had a plate full of those babies and been very happy. Instead I ordered a fritatta and was pretty disappointed. It was underseasoned and the presentation (with something like two slices of cheddar cheese melted thickly on top) was pretty foul. It was also molten hot... so hot that it was still hot the entire time I ate it and I had waited and helped my daughter cut her waffle... but I was the last one finished with breakfast at our table and my eggs were still burning my mouth! Don't know what was going on there, but I wouldn't recommend that dish to anyone. Bleh. (It might have been improved with some salsa and sour cream, and an ice bath!)
Review Source:Gross. Â We didn't expect incredibly delicious room service quality food, but we also didn't expect "fend for yourself inedible food." Â
First of all the staff is confused about what is on their menu. Â We were told by the restaurant that if we wanted a burger at dinner time, we should go to the lounge. Â The lounge told us we could not get burgers. Â
Then when our food was ready, it was handed to us on a giant tray with no means to carry it back to our room (what is the 15% service charge for exactly?). Â So I used one of the luggage racks in the hallway. Â The oysters smelled and tasted rancid, and we did not eat them. Â The nachos were gross, with hardened cheese and stale chips. Â My tortellini did not match what was presented on the menu. Â
We decided to skip the brunch the next day and go to a local restaurant which offered much tastier food and better service. Â
The waitress in the lounge was very friendly, I just think the hotel management needs to work on quality of food and protocols of service.
**Addendum: Even though we reserved the room onto one card, when we arrived we asked if we could put it on another card. "Yes, of course! No problem." we were told. Â And then the wrong card got charged.
We had great service here. We walked in without a reservation and they found us a table quickly. It was in the lounge but had the same excellent view of the ocean. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Unfourtunately that did not make up for the mediocre food. The salad bar was limited and the entrees were fair but not the quality that the price would suggest. We ate other places for less with much better food. That being said the bread was good and the view excellent
Review Source:The Adobe is always a desired spot for lunch when I am on the central Oregon Coast. Easily, one of the best, most dramatic views on the coast. The spray from the crashing surf spots the windows sometimes. I have personally seen migrating whales from my table. The best pasta salad that I have ever had. The best grilled oysters that I have ever had. Rikki (cute lass, always smiling and laughing) is one of the best servers that I have ever had. Â Decent lunch prices with quality plates bursting with freshness and flavour.
I have eaten here quite a few times with almost a year between some visits, and all has remained consistent. Â This is an ideal spot for a romantic meal, or a quick bite before enjoying all that the Oregon Coast as to offer.
Yuck... Cheap, processed food. We got the eggs benedict with "cheese sauce". Â It was thick, gelatinous nastiness. Ham was low quality. Spouse and I only had a few bites and decided it was one of the worst meals we had ever eaten. View is nice.. That's about the only thing it has going for it.
Review Source:Still (or once again) the best place to eat on this part of the coast, especially since they closed "La Serre" or whatever that place was called. Â Adobe's quality had dipped somewhat over the last few years, but at my most recent visit in May of 2012, the food was excellent, so either they are back on top, or I had a very out-of-character weekend with them.
I ate a swordfish steak garnished with tapenade on a bed of wilted spinach. Â The waitress advised me to make sure to get a bit of spinach in every mouthful with the tapenade and the swordfish, because the spinach adds an "earthiness". Â She was so right. Â It was a very finely tuned meal and all the flavors worked together harmoniously. Â I also had a bowl of the most underrated chowder on the coast - underrated I think because chowder is considered too "blue collar" for a white tablecloth restaurant like the adobe. Â But Adobe chowder kicks the teeth out of the chowders from more casual eateries.
The next morning at breakfast I ate a crab and smoked salmon quiche with some fresh-squeezed orange juice. Â It was also excellent. Â These were not thoughtlessly thrown together meals. Â Someone takes pride in their work.
People are downplaying the impact of the view. Â The view is unmatched, and it is good enough to more than make up for a mediocre meal, should you get one. Â There is a deep water undersea channel that goes by less than a hundred yards off shore. Â While I ate my breakfast, I saw a whale come up and spout. Â A little later, we saw another whale. Â The waitstaff says they get grey whales year round, and humpbacks and wright whales when they are migrating. Â Where else can you see that while you dine on excellent cuisine? Â At night, the surf is lit up with lights, and if you have the good fortune to be eating there when there is a big storm you will be treated to a real show. Â
Yachats is a jewel of the west coast, and the Adobe is the crowning glory of Yachats. Â Don't miss it - stay the night and have both dinner and breakfast there, and then drive to cape perpetua and take pictures, or hobbit beach if you want a little exercise.
Every time we would visit my grandmother in Yachats she would insist on taking everyone to dinner one night out of the week here. Although it is highly dated, it is a small town its not like this place is set in NYC or something. The food is okay, I think the last time we went for dinner I got a seafood platter that had a variety of different things on it. I will say I love the Roquefort (bleu cheese) dressing.
The last trip to Oregon, we went there for the brunch buffet, nothing super spectacular but overall pretty decent (as compared to other breakfast places in Yachats) but the view and I guess the memories of visiting with my grandmother over ride the whole experience anyway.
I am not going to give this place 3 stars just because it has a great view! This is suppose to be about the food people! Yes the view is great, but if you want the same great view, book a room at the overleaf next door, like we did. My husband and I were there for a good meal on our anniversary, and that is not what we got. First of all, a salad bar, really!? I think if you're going to charge over $30 a entree there should not be a salad bar, and one that looked like it came straight from sizzler in 1984 no less. Needless to say we passed on the salad course. I ordered the special which was suppose to be a filet mignon, but it was not. Â Trying to pass off a top round has a filet mignon, that's pretty sad. My husbands steak was over cooked, while my side of shrimp were not cooked at all. I had to send them back and then when they came back to the table they were still not cooked! Â I will not be going back there again. I don't care how good the view is, it's not worth it.
Review Source:This place was recommended by its neighbor Overleaf.
I lived through a kitchen nightmare. Â This place is right on the Oregon coast with a beautiful oceanfront view; that is the good part.
The soup du jour; Â very spicy most likely to hide the taste of the frozen seafood.
The oysters on the half shell were likely taken from a jar and place on pristinely polished oyster shells; not freshly shucked and warm to boot.
The smoked salmon on greens, more like incinerated salmon on brown wilted greens with a dill pickle, salt cured capers, eggs, and two rye crisp crackers and cream cheese!
I am convinced this kitchen can ruin any seafood, fresh or not.
The only thing they did not ruin was the glass of Oregon Pinot Gris I used to force down the food.
You can get the view for free; do not spend the money on the food!
Adobe is a funny place. Â It's not made of adobe, and there is no adobe anywhere in sight of the place. Â There's not even stucco near by. Â It's a big wooden structure that sits on the bluff overlooking ocean churns and tide-pools. Â The lounge is a semi-circular protuberance off the hotel lobby with big picture windows fronting the ocean.
The Adobe has the ugliest lobby I've ever stumbled into. Â It might be worth the trip just to see the lobby. Â You could mistake it for a convalescent home, and the maids for CNAs. Â The gift shop adjacent to the lobby even sells the kind of crap you might bring an octogenarian. Â It's all a little long in the tooth and smells a little like disinfectant.
But if the lobby doesn't scare you off, and you head back into the lounge, you'll find a nice place to kick back, have a drink, and, if you're lucky, watch the whales.  The napkins have a little drawing of a whale and ADOBE in script.  I don't get the connection between adobe and whales, but like I said, It's a funny place.  The  foods is ordinary, but they have a pretty good dessert menu.
These folks basically own an incredible lot of acreage in the town of Yachats. They landed and built and were done with it at that point. Has not been updated since from what I can tell. When you enter said lounge/restaurant you are immediately hit though with the most spectacular view on that side of town. They nailed it on the spot. Â
We ate there a few times over the years. This time I had their oysters (I'm a sucker for them. I must have had them every night this week somewhere.) A lot of breading here. I made sure to tell them not a lot of oil which was what I got. I hit their salad bar and yes, a lot of mac salad and potato salad and items in some sort of pickling etc. Â I found spinach though and a few veggie toppings. Â It comes with your dinner. I also got the baked potato and made sure to get that butter on the side, hold the sour cream. They come to your table and ask you if you want that and chives. Traditional.
Bottom line? Frankly? Â There's something nostalgically sweet about the place, and it's "stuck in the old days", so if anything, kick back with one of their appetizers, and a strong drink and take in the surf.
I agree with everyone who has commented about the dated aspects of the restaurant. From the menu to the presentation of the food to the interior design, this is a restaurant that is stuck in the '80s. Some of us, however, find that completely charming. I did. Kind of. It's not "spiced apple ring on a sizzle platter" charming, but darn close.
Add in a lovely, unimpeded ocean view (lit by flood lights at night? Am I correct about that?), and you've got yourself a good time, counting ships and eating unimaginitive but perfectly serviceable dishes.
I went to the Adobe about 5 years ago for my high school prom. All i can say is that i found a lady bug in my salad...a dead lady bug, that i almost ate. I told the waitress & they apologized but did not refund my money or give me another salad. Maybe its just me but i perfer my salad without bugs. I wont go back.
Review Source:The view is the big draw--if you don't enjoy the view, you may want to consider consulting your doctor. Â The food is above average if you order carefully. Â But some of the food is just embarassing; for example, I saw and tried some ossifying biscuits and gravy that Hardees would have been appalled to be associated with. Â But the hangtown fry adobe style was perfectly respectable. Â I have also enjoyed their quiches.
Review Source:Stayed here for a conference. The best thing about this place is the view. It's absolutely spectacular. The rooms are nice sized, but do need a remodel to update the decor. It's very 1980s both in the rooms and in the hotel in general. The conference food was....well...food. It was ok, I guess. I was disappointed in the bland flavors (Garlic, salt, spices, people. C'mon!). Also there wasn't a great deal of variety. I wished they'd have served some seafood, or at least had an option of seafood for those of us who would have appreciated it. I just thought it'd be nicer and have better food. The margarita's were great, and the bar tender was very engaging. Hiighlight of our stay. I'm lobbying for our conference next year to be held somewhere else.
Review Source:The Adobe is the classiest place on the Oregon Coast to have dinner... in 1985.
The restaurant's as dated as the menu and the friendly service is provided by coastal townies. The interior and food are in serious need of updates.
Enjoy all your steakhouse favorites: grilled beef with a baked potato and all the fixing's, chicken somethingorother and fettuccine Alfredo. It feels like the kind of restuarant where my parents would have dressed up to enjoy an anniversary a couple of decades ago. Still don't believe me? Try the salad bar or take a long gander at the pie carousel. No, no, I shit you not.
I've stayed in the hotel a couple of times. Clean and all, but it feels like a dormitory.
This place's saving grace is the spectacular section of the beach on which it's built. For a real treat, head upstairs in the open and wood-filled lounge. Enjoy a Spanish coffee and get lost watching the waves crash into the rocks
Nice fish dishes, everything else straight from the 1970s including the sides. Â "Fresh" salad bar with all entrees had only fresh lettuce and tomatoes, rest was pre-prepared salads like three-bean, past salad, cheap potato salad, etc. Â Having owned a restaurant, I know I could actually identify the brand they were using. Â For $20+ a plate I should get more than packaged food. Â The mashed potatoes were instant, the carrots that came with every dish were unseasoned and over steamed. Â
Overall the experience was laughable, but the fish was good. Â There aer much better places for much less money within the area.
My boy friend and I were staying in the area for the night and were told to check out this place. Â
If you want an amazing view then sit in the lounge! Â We got there in time watching low tide as we sipped on a nice glass of pinot noir. Â We both ordered the clam chowder soup for starters. Â the clam chowder was amazing! Â I ate is so fast as I was starved from driving the car most of the day. Â
I opted to try the Pacific salmon and it melted in my mouth....seriously. Â I have never had such amazing salmon in all my life. Â My boyfriend ordered the baked crab adobe special. Â He said it was the best crab he had tasted in a long time.
The service was excellent and I only wish we had more time in the area so we could try a few more dishes. Â There's always next time.
This is one of the restaurant a lot of local residents recommended. The restaurant was in side the Adobe resort;right next to the Overleaf Lodge we stayed at. We had to go through the Adobe's front desk before we found the restaurant. The staffs were very friendly. I would highly recommend that you do make reservation early and before 8pm (some of the popular dinner entrees were out). My fiancee and I with a couple of friends went there for dinner. It was packed. The restaurant was split in two sections; the lounge and the dinner sitting area. We ended going over to the lounge because we were hungry & didn't want to wait for 1.5hrs for a table. We were lucky that when we were having dinner at the lounge, no one was smoking. The lounge was nice and had live music.. It had the upstairs and downstairs. The funny thing about the service is if you decided to go upstairs for dinner, it's self-service. The waitress doesn't go upstairs. What they do is the guests order their food at the bar & when it's ready, the guests brings their food upstairs. I have never heard self-service in a nice restaurant. Well, of course, we ate downstairs. The restaurant had a view of the ocean. The waitress was very friendly and joked around with us. She tells us funny stories and recommendation around town. The food was pricey but so worth it. The clam chowder was sooooo good; it was better than the famous Mo's Restaurant. We all had salmon and pasta;the halibut was all out. Our side dishes for our entrees were either soup or salad bar. The one downside about sitting in the lounge and ordering salad bar is that I have to walk through a door to go over to the dining area and walk back to my table. I would highly recommend this restaurant. After we finished our food, we got the bill. .We were surprised that there was tax in Oregon. There's only two cities in the state of Oregon that has city tax of 5% which are Yachats and Ashland. That's okay with us, it was worth the price. We had some friends from Portland came in the next morning & we had a trivia question if Oregon has sale tax or not. If we win, we get free breakfast. Well guess what, we got free breakfasts the next day from our dear friends from Portland. I had a very pleasant experience at the restaurant; had excellent food, friendly service, and learn something new in my own state.
Review Source:One of my grandmother's favorite spots on the Oregon Coast. Celebrated a couple anniversaries with her and Grandpa during the summer. The dining room featured stunning views of the ocean surf crashing into the rocky coastline (I would almost be worried during a storm). Food ranged from very good to okay, and the salad bar seemed a bit out of date.
Review Source:Good food at reasonable prices in a restaurant designed so that most tables have an excellent view of the ocean. The ocean is so close that storms must throw salt spray onto the windows. The restaurant and resort are both in need of an extensive remodel, but when the pork osso buco is falling off the bone and the markup on the wine is modest, who cares?
Review Source:The atmosphere is funky, the resort is old and the dinig room is round. BUT, the sunsets are great and the food is tasty. I had the Adobe Dungeness Crab Pot - a small crock packed with sweet crab meet, a few mushrooms and topped with cheddar. The wine list is okay - be prepared, they sell a LOT of Pinto Gris and Pinto Noir in Oregon. You can bring your own wine and they charge a small corkage fee. You can get away with wearing shorts and flipflops in the summer. reservations are recommended on the weekends.
Review Source:the dining room at the adobe has the best view on this part of the coast.  the food however, runs the gamut from just o.k. to pretty tasty.  as a general rule, i stay away from the fish dishes (excepting the clams) as the fish tends to be frozen not fresh.  the pork osso bucco is surprisingly good.  service tends to be pretty good, too.  the weirdest thing here is the salad bar.  there lettuce and spinach but the rest of the items are in salad  form - 3 kinds of pasta salad, potato salad, cucumber salad, and pickled carrots to name a few.
the best time to go is sunset and depending on the time of year, you may want to make a reservation.
as a side note, they used to have a pretty rad brunch setup, but i haven't been to it in a while.
