Adobe Verde is ok, but is far from being the best place in Gruene. We ordered the shrimp fajitas for two, but they brought out the shrimp fajitas for one...and gave us the other half later when they realized it. It happens, but if you are a tourist, go to Gruene River Grill or the Gristmill instead.
Review Source:Headed to Gruene for a wander around the historic town on a sunny November afternoon. Being vegetarian our choices are limited so after checking the menu at Adobe Verde, we thought we'd give it a whirl. The covered patio out front was large and airy. The servers were helpful and friendly. Hubby chose the Veggie Quesadilla and I chose the Veggie Banditos. Both portions were more than generous and both were filled with fresh ingredients. We loved both dishes! The chips and salsa were good too. Great lively place if you are in town and fancy a bite to eat, especially if you are a vegetarian.
Review Source:Been going here for years.
The location is great. Gruene is a historic small town. Lots of tourist. Its great because before or after you eat, you can walk around town and look at all the local shops.
The food is always really good. The taco salad is huge!
I have never really had at wait to get a table. The staff is usually really nice and always very helpful. I always love bringing my visiting family and friends here to enjoy margaritas and some delicious Tex-Mex!
First place I've eaten in Texas and I love this setting. I like the large open air area with the patio, live music, and lights hanging along the walls and trees. Gruene, TX is like some scene out of a movie about the South. The town has Texas's oldest dance hall and is absolutely magical. A long way home from Orange County, CA, that's for sure.
In any case, I liked my plate, the Tampiqueno cancun which consisted of steak fajitas which were moist and extremely flavorful. I also had the frijoles borrachos which were delicious as well. Our server was friendly and the atmosphere made it worth the stop.
The 3 star reviews made me nervous, but it was late, and we were craving Mexican food, which is scarce in downtown Gruene.
The food here was great! The white queso is addicting, and the salsa is good if you like spicy salsa.
We sat on the large outdoor patio area next to the stage where a band played. There is plenty of outdoor seating.
It's very casual which I liked too!
The only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't taste any alcohol in my daquiri. I know it's a low end chain, but Applebee's in New Braunfels actually makes strong drinks!
So, I must make it clear...Mexican food is not synonymous with Tex-Mex. AV doesn't have Mexican food, but has decent TexMex. It wasn't out of this world, but certainly wasn't horrible either.
Wait time: Minimal. We were seated as soon as we arrived. Food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering.
Wait staff: There were so many people on staff! I don't think I've ever been to a restaurant with so many hosts, servers, and bartenders.
Ambiance: Was great! Love the small town Texas decor. Love the live music.
What didn't I like? Like any normal Mexican restaurant, they brought us a basket of chips and bowl of salsa while we waited. Pretty normal, right? Well, about 1/2 way through the basket of chips, our server came by, removed the basket of chips, threw the remaining chips in the trash (we were sitting by the kitchen area, trash can in line of vision) and brought us a new basket of chips. Good and attentive service? Yes. Wasting food? YES! AHHHH. It drove me crazy - couldn't get over it! Why would you throw away 1/2 a basket of chips? This perhaps might seem like not a big deal to some, but I just hate hate hate hate hate wasting perfectly good food. ):
Anyway...
Food: It was good. We got a burrito to share and it was more than enough for the two of us. Delicious but if you are sensitive to spicy, beware! There's something in there with a kick! If you like spicy...well...order this burrito. (:
This is small, but they put a slice of lime in the waters - I like this small touch. (:
Sorry, have to agree with others here. Â Service not very good, food very blah although it looked good (enchiladas imperial and enchiladas ameri..something), with the exception of the Frog Dip which I just had to try! Â Loved the dip!, BUT the wait staff didn't renew our chips, or even ask us when I'm sure she could see that we would run out soon....so my Frog Dip sat there for about ten minutes before we got more chips..We had to call her over. Â El Nopalitos is soooo much better! Â Heck my Mexican food here in Seaside, OR has better.
Review Source:Wow. What the heck happend to this place? This in the touristy town of Gruene. You get lots of bikers and shoppers. You would figure this place would be really good, right? Wrong. This is not the first time I have been to this location. We have eater here quite a few times. We were hanging out in Gruene and did not want to hit the Gristmill or the Gruene River Grill. We stopped in and this place was not that busy, which is surprising for a weekend. We sat inside since it was a little chilly on the patio.
We ended up waiting for almost 10 minutes before we even saw a server. Ironically, there were four servers all laughing and not really paying attention to customer traffic. The first female server that finally came over did take our drink order but did little else. She never came back and checked on us. When we placed our order, the food too entirely too long to be brought to the table. There was not that much traffic inside or outside, so you would think things go a little fast.
We finally go our food and the portions are a tad bit on the small side. When you normally go to a Mexican restaurant, you get a big plate of rice and beans and youe entree. This was not the case. There was another female server that brought us our food. She was more attentive than the first girl. The food quality was descent. I was not impressed with it. I have had better food and service when I have been here before.
I might have caught them on an off night. For a Mexican place that is located in the heart of Gruene, the Adobe is not bad. They just need to improve the food quality and their service.
I can't believe the low rating for this place. I'm so thankful the hotel recommended them otherwise we probably never would have gone. It's in a touristy shopping strip. Cute little restaurant.
Everything we ordered was delicious. I had the Adobe Tacos with cheese, beans, avocado chicken or beef with borracho beans. Let me tell you these were some of the best tacos I have ever had. They were served on a flour tortilla that had been heated up on the grill so it had a nice brown crisp on the outside. The borracho beans were the best beans I have ever had. I have to learn how to make them now!!
My husband ordered the crunchy, munchy burrito which was also great. By the way, I could only eat one of the tacos so you could share. Also enjoyed our margaritas, not too sweet or sour with the right amount of tequila.
If we come back we would definitely dine here again.
We headed out to dinner late, and most places were already closed except here, so we thought we'd give it a try. Â Mistake. Â We were seated immediately and brought chips and salsa. Â The salsa was terrible- it was like plain tomatoes sauce w/ no flavor, spice or kick. Â We ordered queso dip with meat and guacamole in it, and it was actually very good and it started to think that things were getting better. Â
I ordered beef tacos al carbon and when I took a bite, it was the saltiest meat I'd ever eaten- I tried cutting off the edges of the meat so but the salt was soaked all the way through. Â None of our entrees turned out to be very good and we had to wait forever to get our ticket. Â Definitely wouldn't waste my time or money here again.
We were disappointed! Â The service was TERRIBLE (like our waiter ignored our requests and sat down with other workers at a table) and the food was not good. Â My husband asked for no sour cream and guac, and you could see where they had been scraped off and covered with chips. Â We grabbed straws from the bar and found a dead fly stuck on one! Â NOT going back.
Review Source:The setting is good here. Nice location in Gruene, and a great patio with kid's play area, a big plus.
BUT, the food is only ok. There is alot of great Mexican in Central Texas and this is very average. The Maragaritas are decent, but the one I ordered was very lime-y, overly citrusy. Not sure that it is made with fresh juice versus an acidic mix.
having said that, we'd go more with the family because the play area is so nice. if only they'd improve the food
My sister raved about this place, I wasn't blown away. Drinks are great, atmosphere is great, but the food was lacking flavor. I had enchiladas since the spacey waiter recommended them, so maybe the rest of the menu is more flavorful. Enjoyed the drinks & the view on the large outside patio, since it was at least a little cooler than inside with no ac, but wouldn't recommend the place if you're in search of great mexican food. There are plenty of other options around town I was way more impressed with.
Review Source:Went here many years ago after a day at Schlitterbahn. Â We enjoyed it then and we enjoyed it now. Â Bar and restaurant with large enclosed patio.
Great food. Â Try the fresh tortillas and queso or Frog dip. Â The fajita nachos were a great appetizer. Â My daughter had the chicken diablo that was full of flavor.
Prices are reasonable. Â Many great eateries in Gruene, this place included. Â Would definitely go again.
Just moved to NB last month and this place was recommended to us by one of the locals. Â We couldn't wait to try it. Â Drove up and loved the look of the place. Â Very Texicana, weathered wood kind of place with lots of outdoor seating. Â They had decent live music on the patio, although it was just too danged hot to sit out there. Â We were promptly seated in the small, but cozy dining area near the bar. Â At this point, we had high hopes since this looked like our kind of place.
I got a combo plate (which is what I always order when I'm trying out a new Mexican joint). Â Certainly not what I was hoping for. Â I was told this was good Tex Mex, but the enchiladas had a fairly flavorless red sauce instead of the thick, dark chili I was hoping for. Â Taco was nothing amazing either. Â Food was luke warm. Â I've had frozen Patio dinners with more flavor. Hubby got the fajita nachos and was not impressed. Â Also flavorless. Â And this was definitely the worst, most watery excuse for a margarita I've ever encountered. Â It was like they took a small Margarita and just added tap water to make it a large one. Â I can honestly say that, in my entire life, this is the first Margarita I've ever left unfinished. Â Drank about half and abandoned the rest. Â The chips were cold and hot sauce was nothing special. Rarely do I give a place less than a three star rating, but as we were pulling out of the parking lot, we both agreed this was our last trip to Adobe Verde.
How does a "salsa festival" mean a fold out table with two-ounce cups of several salsa samples, within the porch of a large restaurant, with two letter-sized signs not visible from outside? Â It doesn't. Â But, it does mean discovering a peach/mustard/habanero salsa! Â WOW!
My party loved the sizzling beef fajitas and tortilla soup. Â I loved the squirrelly waiter boy for giving me the heads up on their salad quality!
Adobe Verde is decently satisfactory TexMex. Â Nothing to crave, but agreeable.
I wouldn't go down to Gruene and waste your time there. Â They do have a playground for kids. Â The food is so-so. Â Sometimes it gets to the OK mark, sometimes...not so much.
I think plays on the atmosphere and location........... Â Other than that - go to Gristmill or Gruene River Grill. Â
Maybe it would be pretty cool if you just wanted to grab some cold drinks.
What a bummer!!! I go to Texas for the weekend and want some good Tex-Mex grub so we pick this place. What a total disappointment. Not only were the chips and salsa extremely lacking in flavor, but the Frog Dip (queso w/ beef, pico de gallo, and guac) was like eating a salt lick. There were 6 of us, we all ordered different dishes, and no one was happy. We had 3 resident Texans and 3 Californians. That night we were still craving decent Mexican food so we did the midnight run to Taco Cabana and got our fix on queso and tortillas. Blew Adobe Verde out of the water by a Texas mile.
The restaurant's only saving grace is the ambiance. That's it.
If you want decent food and MUCH better chips, salsa, queso, and meals, go to Gristmill down the road. Same price and a million times better.
We've been to Adobe Verde several times, and I'm always favorably impressed with the place. The food is good, the salsa is yummy, the service reliably excellent, and there's even a playground for kids (and immature adults) to play on! They've also got a nice looking bar, though I haven't yet tried the drinks.
Some of my favorite dishes are the Tacos Adobe, which are wrapped in crisp baked flour tortillas, and the La Bandera Mexicana, a combination of one red, one white, and one green enchilada. ("Bandera" means "flag", and the Mexican flag is red, white, and green. Clever little menu elves!)
We've been there with groups ranging in size from 2 people to about 20, and the staff has always been very helpful and accommodating. With the possible exception of The Grist Mill, this is my favorite place to eat in Gruene.
