The food is good here, we started off with some stale chips but were promptly replaced when we notified the assistant wait staff.  The Mango margarita was a little strong on the mango, but still good.  I had the house margarita and it was very good for a house drink.  The wait was longer than expected on a Sunday night but worth the wait.  The molcajete anejo was great with shrimp, chicken and steak for our first time here to try all three seasoned meats.  The tortillas were good, but i still have to say Old Town Mexican Cafe holds the freshest homemade top spot.  The Google maps placed the restaurant on the other side so make sure you are next to Von's on this one.

Mmmmmm, just like their sister restaurant, Jalapeno's, but in a sit down environment. Tasty food and good service.

Love Anejo.  Staff is always really friendly, food is great, and prices are way reasonable.  Machaca is awesome, breakfast burritos are great, try the carna asada platter.

Two visits in one week mean I'm a fan!  To be more specific, we're fans of the tamarindo margaritas.  Seven bucks for a tasty tasty drink complete with tamarind candy and a chili rim -- so good!  The food is pretty good as well (but I'm really a poor judge of Mexican food), and the prices are surprisingly low for the somewhat nicer atmosphere.  Nearly all items are under $10.  I've had the fish burrito and California burrito here -- both a little dry, but I like that (wet, sloppy burritos are gross).  The fish ceviche is also pretty good.

They have TVs here if you're looking to catch the game.  Sadly, I watched the Bruins lose the Stanley Cup here.  =(

Bottom line -- get the tamarindo margarita!

Rich M. from Beaumont, CA sent me a "compliment" saying that he "knows" (as in Biblically?) the owner Robert --- and he doesn't "run" the food I described on Yelp ... and therefore, my review should be viewed as "bogus."

I won't hold it against Anejo's that the owner knows someone as dumb-ass as this Rich f-wad.  But it is what it is.  Eat here at the risk of your hard-earned cash.

Now, I'm still trying to figure out what it means to "run" food.

I don't have a clue how we ended up at this place...but I did find 11 month old food pics and a dirty receipt so I MUST have eaten here...on to the pics.

    ENCHILADA SUIZA BEEF

    <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a%C3%B1ejo-bar-and-grill-escondido-2?select=uhBTLV7MRGA0Vzwu6FqgBg#eq5_ASmVfm1366YjZa2ulQ">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>

Looks halfway decent to me...I just asked the wife what she thought and basically responded "Are you seriously asking me about an enchilada I ate almost a year ago?  What the hell is wrong with you?"  I'm gonna go ahead and say she though it was just aight.

    PORK EN CHILE VERDE

    <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/a%C3%B1ejo-bar-and-grill-escondido-2?select=uhBTLV7MRGA0Vzwu6FqgBg#QPdA6rogf2tKa0D1NVBrjg">http://www.yelp.com/biz_…</a>

Slow roasted, tender cubes of pork in a spicy chile verde sauce.  Ah yes, now I remember this place.

Do pork right, and you will forever secure a wrinkle in my brain.

Cheap Mexican restaurant. Kid friendly. Looking from the outside with the doors and shades closed, you are scared to go in but it's a very different experience once work up the courage to go in :) Friendly environment and staff. Food is OK. The salsa was very hot/spicy. The hottest I've ever had at any Mexican restaurant. I think they should dial it down a bit. Food is cheap compared to other mexican restaurants. It's priced as if those small take out places.

Okay, real talk: there are not a lot of good places to eat in Escondido.  Especially when it comes to sit down joints.  Anejo, for me, is a breath of fresh air in the sense that it is a sit down mexican restaurant that is actually good.  Most of these places (concina del charro, etc) are uniformly mediocre.  But Anejo is cheap and awesome.  Their burritos are pretty great across the board (the pollo asada being my favorite) and their margaritas are made the right way.  Service is typically solid.  Nice little bar area.

Their chicken Mocajeta is the bomb! It comes out in a huge lava bowl lined with tin foil and its filled with green sauce that the chicken is cooked in and it is amazing! It's served with cheese, onions, cactus (which I had never had but is really good), roasted jalapenos and of course tortillas and fixings on the side!

Their salsa is ok but not the best.

Was referred here by Alex at the Avocado Grill on Grand in Escondido (try it) after not finding any great sit down Mexican restaurants in Escondido (other than Jorge's taco shop which I LOVE). This place has EXCELLENT service even when they are packed on the weekend. One of the few places that makes Al Pastor tacos's & burritos, one of my favorite dishes. There is a full bar and plenty of seating. If you want a good Mexican fix & a beer this is the place we now go.

My husband and I haven't found the perfect "Mexican Food Place"  in Escondido, which is shocking since Escondido is like like little Mexico in some areas...I should know, I was born in Mexico-We were looking for a decent "Taco Tuesday" Happy Hour and looked on Yelp & thought we should try it. It wasn't packed at the bar area but it was busy. We were served right away & my Cadillac margarita was tasty & my husbands beer was satisfying, he likes special beers & although they didn't carry a big selection like he likes they did at least had Fat Tire which he was Ok with. The street tacos of 3 for $5 were totally worth it, although small tacos, they were packed with meat and guacamole. They were quite yummy.I'd go again...it was fun and not too noisy like someone else commented.

Good food, reasonably priced, fast service, but WAY TOO LOUD. Don't count on being able to have a conversation here because the music is way too loud.

My California Burrito was really good and surprisingly mild in spice. If you're sensitive to spice like I am, I would highly recommend it. The horchata is AMAZING. It's very cinnamony and flavorful.

The bottom line: a good place for cheap, tasty eats, but don't count on holding a conversation!

Delicious carna Asada fries, the best I have ever had! Great service! All around a great place to enjoy with friends and family! I always sit at the bar area so I don't have any experience in the dinning room as far as service. I recommend the Tamarindo Margarita!!

Had our second trip for dinner tonight. Long wait at 6:30PM, but it is Saturday night, so not surprising. Very noisy, but tolerable. It is true what everyone says about the salsa - very spicy! We ask for pico de gallo to mix with to cool it down.  Chips are pretty good, not the absolute best. Had two types of shredded beef enchiladas, both very good, but could have been warmer. Shrimp was good again, and Chile Relleno was reportedly pretty good. Beans also are just slightly above average. Other reviewers also pegged the Guacamole... very mediocre - not much flavor, and too smooth of a texture. Almost seems they put it in a blender. Easy to fix though...

Overall would probably say they deserve 3.5 stars, but that is not an option, so I rounded down. Prices are reasonable, service was pretty good considering the crowd.

Teo Leo's near the 5 and 56 freeways is still our #1 favorite. Best chips and salsa we know of anywhere.

I've been coming to this amazing bar and grill since it opened. It's a great place to bring your family for delicious Mexican cuisine, or to hang out with your friends and watch sports over a couple drinks in the bar area.

Personally, I LOVE their fish, chicken, and beef tacos, and they are decently priced...especially on taco Tuesday! Anejos has delicious food all around, their service is superb, and I will be coming here as long as I live in San Diego county. If you haven't been here, you should definitely check it out. 5 stars.

The salsa was spicy and the chips were good. There were lots of TVs and the place looked like it would be happening on a weekend.

We went on a weekday evening, and hence it was not so crowded.

Got the chili verde - it was good, but I have had better.   The margarita was good - but I have had better!

So, what can I say, not overly impressed, but a good A-OK place, and would definitely go back if I just want to hang out watch the game, and partake in some good salsa!

After living in Escondido for about a year, I'm still always on the hunt for a write-home-about Mexican place.  This may just be it!!!

Their salsa is home made and super spicy, so beware.  On Fridays and Saturday nights they have amazing late night happy hour.  All of their bar food is $1 off and their margaritas are lethal.  Two usually have me feeling good.

If you come here, you MUST try their Taco Gobernador.  It has to be the best shrimp taco I've ever had.  They fold a normal size tortilla in half after its filled with shrimp and goodness, then they throw it on the grill, cut it in half like a quesadilla and serve to you hot.  Its the BEST!!!  And for $2.and change, you can't beat that.

The environment is lively during these hours.  they play uplifting music that makes me wonder how they don't have a dance floor somewhere.  Meregue, Salsa, Cumbia, and Bachata!!

Anejo has an excellent molcajete for dinner.  This is probably their signature dish.  It is steak, chicken, shrimp or a combination of them all made in a traditional mexican lava rock bowl, simmered with salsa and roasted strips of peppers. Its basically fajitas on steroids.  They make it even better than Old Town here in my opinion.

If you are looking for a quick happy hour place Anejo fills the bill well.  They have very good specials and you can get a huge plate of steak nachos with authentic beans and quality steak for $6 during happy hour. Plenty for 2 people.  The margaritas are very good and authentic.  I recommend it either for dinner or happy hour and on some nights they even have a full mariachi band with horns, guitars and singing to complete the atmosphere.  Instead of the long drive to Old Town I find myself just heading down the street to Anejo because its a legit stand-in to Coyote Cafe or OTMC.

    Ole Anejo!

I live in the neighborhood and had never visited. Why did I wait so long? This place is fantastic! *Excellent* prices and even more *incredible* food. I had  the chili relleno and it was like none I had ever experienced. Delightful depth of flavor. My partner is a carnitas snob, and he loved theirs.

The salsa is beyond yummy -- they brought two kinds, hot and mild. Both tasted  homemade.

The decor is trendy, making you feel like you are in for a fun night out. Polished concrete floors and other details impart a hip theme for a basically neighborhood restaurant. As another reviewer said, "Why go to Old Town anymore?"

The service was beyond accommodating. The hostess honored our request for a booth in a certain location, while our waiter, Omed, was incredibly attentive and friendly. The owner even came by to see how everything was -- a very nice touch.

Prices? $9.95 for a two combo dinner with rice and beans. *Excellent* prices on ala carte items -- most around $5.95. Great to stop in for something to fill your stomach and relax for awhile. Drinks very good and reasonably priced.

I love the atmosphere at Hacienda de Vega, but got fed up with its higher prices, indifferent service and *cold* food.

Negatives on Anejo? Concrete floors make it noisy at times, but I was surprisingly able to hear once I was seated in a booth. Once the crowds subsided, it was much quieter. Bar is separated from restaurant and was busy on this Saturday night.

Best compliment? We will be back ... a lot!   :-)

I've been here on three separate occasions, always with the other party wanting to visit this place.

All visits have gone pretty much the same...

Waiting 5-8 minutes before being acknowledged, staff goes at their own pace, waiting for menus, but I will say that the food is decent.  Thus the two stars.  Don't go there...enough said.

Although I live only a mile from this restaurant, it took a friend's recommendation to get me in there.  I am glad I took his advice.

Parking is plentiful and easy.  The decor is above average and everything was clean and neat.

They have a very unique menu.  There is some of the usual mexican-restaurant fare, but there are also many items that the average gringo (me) has never seen.  I was mesmerized by the many soups available and went for the shrimp and fish soup.  It was far more than I could eat and absolutely delicious.  My girlfriend had a Molcajete, which you just have to see to believe.

Service was great.  I could not stop them from filling our chips and salsa even after we were stuffed.  The food arrived in a very reasonable time.  We waddled away from the table quite happy and ready to go back again.

If you have a choice go some where else
    Service -1 Food 2 1/2
This was my first and most likely last visit to this place. Service was horrible. People who where seated next me at other tables got there order taken and feed before I got a waiter to come get my drink order. The food server was rude and unhelpful. One person at our table had to get up and ask them to check status on our order. It took over 1 hr 45 min to get our food. Lastly the killer was the forced gratuity 18% for bad food and service.

First timer, drove moms down from la for dentist appt, thought i would checkout local eatery for lunch. After reading reviews decided on Anejos, got to place is very clean and organized, geese even the bathrooms were spotless.
As for the food how can anyone decide on just one thing, ordered campechana jalapeno, taco de asada, taco al pastor, moms ordered the combination molcajete with chicken ,steak and shrimp , thing was huge. She was also craving cheese enchiladas so we ordered two. Everything was great no complains, asada and al pastor were everything i would expect of a taco, campechana perfectly spicy ( lots of serranos ). And the molcajete full of flavor.
Service was excellent , not once did our drinks reach the bottom, good job guys, two thumbs up .

It's not often (or ever) that we hit up the Dido for a nite on the town, but this place was highly recommended by a fancy broad. I had to try it.

We started off sharing the 1/2 order of oysters, which were giant! We ordered some margs to sip while perusing the menu. Let's just say our margaritas were not for the faint of heart. (Thank you Mr. Bartender!!) I was a little buzzed after the first one. Memory gets a little fuzzy after the 2nd and 3rd margaritas. I may have ordered enchiladas and inhaled several baskets of chips with salsa. I do know this: our food was good and the service was wonderful. Our waiter was always there to get us refills or whatever.

I may have to make a special trip up Esco soon.

I live very close to this restaurant and had been meaning to eat at it for a long time. Tonight, we finally did. I wish we didn't wait so long.

Their restaurant is beautiful inside. Very well decorated and comfortable. Their menu had a lot of different options, and they had numerous drink specials, as well. Their staff was very friendly. We interacted with at least 5 of them, and they were all very nice (I read some reviews that said their service was bad, but I have a feeling that the people that wrote the reviews were snobby pricks to them).

The thing that amazed me most about this place was the price. Everything was so cheap - and it was delicious. My wife, son, and I ate there, and the total was $27, but I got an $8 drink.

If you look great Mexican food for a great price, give this place a try.

I decided to take our family and some friends here and see how it was. It was a total of nine of us. The hostess was confused and rude. She said they weren't "setup " to seat nine people. She told me we could sit at the bar. Mind you, I'm talking to her as I hold my 1 year old and we also have a 9 year old in our party. She seemed like it was an inconvenience for the restaurant. I told her we would just leave and take our business somewhere else that wasn't bothered by 9 people showing up. I'll never go here again, and I'm going to tell my friends in the area of the rude hostess.

It surprises me because I learned that this is the same owner as Jalapenos in Carmel Mountain Ranch, a place I frequented for years. I can't imagine Robert would allow this kind of person to work at one of his restaurants. But after reading some of the other reviews, it doesn't seem like this was her first night.

I wish I could review the food, but as you can see, my party and I never made it that far.

Decent place for semi-large groups to hang out for a margarita, some Coronas...etc.

It's a local Mexican bar and restaurant in the Vons complex. Wasn't hungry so Im just reviewing the bar and drinks only.

Very friendly and attentive staff. It's not just one person helping you out but the managers get involved too. You can't beat the free chips and salsa they offer you. And actually, that was some tasty salsa. Kinda spicy, but definitely doable for most people.

Asked if there were any happy hour, but they directed me to their specials menu...so I'm not sure if its "happy prices". Domestic drafts at $3, imports at $4, margaritas at $6. Had a Dos XX beer, pretty big for a $4 brew and I got one of their margaritas on the rocks. This too was pretty big for $6 bucks...so in that sense, yah kinda happy, but the margarita was kinda off for whatever reason. Maybe it was the type of tequila they used. Who knows...but it wasn't the best. The Dox XX went down pretty smooth...they have some pretty cold beer taps.

Again, customer service was very good, ambiance was decent. It was about 8pm, and the bartender said it was pretty busy right now....but looking around, most of the dining tables were empty and half the bar seats were empty as well. So I'm not sure what he meant by "busy".

I wonder what his definition would be if this place was really full...oh well, I might not know since I don't live up here. Maybe on my way to Vegas I might stop by here as a rest stop....Escondido...what is this??? like half way to Vegas right? Or at least get some gas while I'm here.
