Head past to Red Dog Saloon and venture into this place. Â The bar has some serious old-school charm. Â The bartender was super friendly. Â There are tons of different local brews on tap, and the day we were there they had a folk band playing. Â
Oh, and free Wi-Fi meant I could catch up on work.
After a miserable time down the street at the cesspool/Dump of Red Dog Saloon (see review) we walked up the street to this warm and friendly crowd at the Alaskan. Great selection of beer on draft and we could have a free sample to try one we like. At Red Dog Dump I wanted to try a sample / taste of their Micro beer and the Bartender asked "Do I come to your house and ask for free beer? We bought 2 pitchers (Sorry red Dog) you did not get my money. and proceeded to have a great time with classy people. Blow off red Dog and come to a place that treats you like a friend.
Review Source:I really liked this place. Â My wife and I stopped in here after an excursion from our cruise ship and it left a good taste in our mouth about the town (although it was just a tourist trap). Â We tried to get into the Red Dog since that looked unique but this bar was pretty good. Â Not too crowded.. sat down right in front of the band which included a banjo, wash tub bass and guitar. Â Getting a drink took a while but that happens sometimes I guess... that was the only down side. Â Everything else is all Good!
Review Source:By far my favorite hangout in Juneau. Â There's a giant range in the crowd - folks on business, locals, travelers, fisherman, you name it! Â
A couple of nights it was a bit too crowded to deal with, but overall, of all the hangouts in Juneau, this was the one I was happiest to be perched at with my laptop and there were always decent people to talk to. Â As the other restaurants etc in town closed, you'd see the staff start coming over to the Alaskan because - well - the town really is that small, but it's a good place to get to know everyone.
This bar is a must if visiting Juneau. Â If you are lucky they might pull out the Charbay. Â I love all the people here. Â Adam the bartender is great and the locals are always friendly. Â Don't ring the bell or you have to buy everybody a drink.
The only thing I would suggest to the friendly people of this bar is to utilize the stage with some live music a bunch more. Â During cruise visits this could be the Key West of the NorthWest.
Pretty cool bar - you WILL feel like you're at the Last Frontier. The decor feels very old west style: it's dark & dimly lit, everything is solid wood (like that really old wood, not prefab crap), and there are suggestive pictures on the wall (it did use to be a brothel). We went on a night a bluegrass band was playing, which was pretty cool. I recommend sitting up top to watch a show, it's a good view & not quite as loud (however I did find myself yelling to carry on a conversation). Their sound system isn't amazing, but hey, it is the last frontier.
Review Source:We stayed at the hotel three nights during our camping/hiking trip to Juneau, and spent a hell of a lot of time in the bar. They had great music playing at all times: just as good at 11 am, 5 pm, and 2 am. We missed the live weekend shows, sadly, but I'm sure they're great. The beer selection is the best I saw in town, and this is the only place still bumping mid-week after the tourists all get back on their cruise ships and sail away. You may find it impossible to move. If you're lucky, your second cocktail might be twice as big as the first. If you're luckier, the bartender might take a smoke break and put a friend in charge who likes to pour free shots of Jameson.
Review Source:I somehow managed to research this one, single historic spot before embarking on a cruise through the inside passage. Â Luckily, my instincts were spot-on in making a beeline for this spot the minute I left the giant barge-o-people for the pretty town of Juneau. Â
At first I walked into the Alaskan Hotel, thinking that the entrance would be shared (like the name of the place). Â Nope - the bar entrance is next door. Â Dark...red flocked wallpaper...tiffany lamps...vintage nudie photographs framed on the walls...and ice cold beers on tap. Â Hello, Alaska!
The bartender was friendly and affable and even though the bar itself smelled kind of funny inside, I sat for a long time and watched the people walk by. Â I would highly recommend this bar over the other larger, shinier, more tourist-oriented establishments near the port.
GREAT selection of on-tap beers for an Alaskan town! Â They had all of the standard prerequisites plus quite a few selections from Pacific Northwest micro-brews, like Deschutes Brewery. Â The bar room is dark and historic, with many posters on the wall and a general feeling that if you came in there for the right show, you wouldn't forget it.
