The service here is awful. Some friends and I came in on a quiet weekday night and several minutes to get us seated, when there were plenty of seats available. We just wanted some drinks and a little something to munch on, and it took forever for everything to come out. Again, there weren't many people there so we aren't sure why. We ordered some hummus plate and got only 4 small pieces of pita; there were 4 of us at the table. When we asked for more bread, they told us we'd be charged $1 for it. The food was fine, nothing special. Nothing special about their drink selection either. The waitress was extremely inattentive and it took a long time to get the check. I won't be coming back.

It's a rare night when my man and I get a date without the offspring.  It's an ever rarer night when we accomplish this within walking distance and manage to find vegan food.  Scouring the menu, success at A&B!  We walk by it all the time, with the adorable Harry Potter-like secret alley that runs alongside the restaurant, connecting Witherspoon to Palmer Square.  The restaurant is of two minds, with a dining room in the front and a bar/pub in the back.  That night, the bar was by far the place to be.

We started with the spicy carrot hummus, which was fantastic, dipping all sorts of radishes, cucumbers, and pita wedges into the deliciousness.  It paired well with my pinot grigio and the fella's microbrew (watermelon wheat or some such?).  We ate in the bar area, as the "outdoor" seating was full (not so much outdoors since the big plastic window thingies were down, but I suppose it would be a great place to sit if they ever open the patio up instead of making you feel like The Bubble Boy).

I had the vegetarian cilantro black bean burgers, sans cheese.  It's always a test of a restaurant to see how their food tastes when the mask of cheese is removed.  Thumbs up for this veggie burger.  It was great, although I have yet to find a house-made veggie burger that doesn't mush when being held or eaten.  This is the sacrifice I must make, I suppose.  It must have been pretty good, since my husband was trying to sneak bites of it between digging into his head-sized bowl of stir fry.  The stir fry was alright, but it could have used some pep.  A little kick would have been nice.  But that bowl, no matter how arty, was hilarious.  It could have served as an ancient Japanese warrior helmet made of ceramic.

We have a few more options for future dining, including the garden vegetable sandwich, battered green beans, sweet potato fries, and such.  Add a few more veggie items to the menu, A&B, and we'll be regulars, dining in or takeout.

Love the interior of this place and the outside "patio". I've been here three times and I've been satisfied each time. Large TVs around, great for watching sporting events while eating.

I've gotten the hard cider all three times, tastes yummy and has a high alcohol content without tasting like it. My friends have all enjoyed their beers here as well. An especially masculine and muscular friend of mine asked the waitress for a recommendation and was given the Pineapple Bomb. It was yellow, served in a tall glass, and had a nice Maraschino cherry to top it off. It was delicious, I tried some, and my friend fell in love with the waitress and left his number (no text though, he was very sad).

The wings here are so good. I can't stress that enough, I've never had better wings in my life and my fantasy football league agrees with me on the tastiness of these wings. They are perfect, from the amount of frying they undergo to the buffalo sauce. I've also had the Tiger Burger and the chicken club sandwich. Both, while not the greatest I've had, were definitely very decent. Large portions leave me feeling satisfied, will be back often next school year.

Actually the food was decent--Tuna BLT was nice. I asked for it medium-rare to rare but since the server looked at me funny when I said this, I shouldn't have been surprised that mine was the same doneness as the patron next to me. My husband had pulled chicken and tortilla soup. Again, both decent. The outdoor seating was nice, but I have to say, the napkins at McDonalds are better quality (not being picky just an observation).

We won't go back because it was hands down the worst service we've had in a while. The hostess was adorable and super helpful, but our server.... After we ordered, he came back 30 seconds later and asked my husband if he had ordered....'um, yeah, we just did, with you...'  When I was ordering,  the server and I had a long conversation about substituting the battered green beans for fries and the extra cost associated with the substitution. Based on his conversation with my husband, I should have guessed that wasn't happening. My sandwich came out with fries not green beans. This wouldn't have been a problem except the server said, "Oh, yeah, I forgot to tell them to give you beans instead." and walked away from the table with no offer to correct the error.  There are enough other places to choose from, so I think we'll pass next time.

BTW we visited yesterday, June 9.

I like A & B. They have great burgers and their menu is varied. We stopped in during the weekend for lunch. My husband got the Kobe Burger and I got a salad. The food came out unnaturally quick, so it made sense when my husband bit into the burger and it was basically raw. He ordered it on the rare side of medium rare. We had to send it back to be cooked.

We got there in between lunch and dinner services I suppose because we were given a "late lunch" menu. I got a chicken caesar salad, which was decent, although they need to do something about getting some quality lettuce because I had a really cheap commercial blend with lots of stalky bits and it was all kind of yellow, like it had all come from the center of the lettuce head.

Otherwise, it was a good salad and their caesar dressing is AWESOME.

Once cooked, my husbands burger was also awesome. It had a really good chipotle sauce on it and the cheese was ooey-gooey deliciousness!

They have  a great beer selection too.

it's princeton- you can expect just about everything to be overpriced. meh.

A&B has a decent selection of beers on tap, and a list of meads- pretty rare for this area. the wine list is okay, but nothing to rave about. i've hung out at the bar here a few times and, well, it's just okay. the nachos are yummy, with lots of spicy chorizo and a good chip-to-other stuff ratio. i really enjoy the calamari appetizer as well- with a chili-ginger dipping sauce (nice alternative to marinara)- and the portion is quite large.

is it, like, omg the best place ever?! no. but from my experiences, it's not much different than other bars/pubs in the vicinity. go here to hang out with some friends over drinks, split some apps... you won't leave disappointed.

My friend and I came here on a weekday night since it was one of the few bars still open. They have an outdoor-ish seating area, and an indoor one. The food is your typical pub food and decent. At least they didn't mess up the fries and they were fat and tasty.

Prices are a bit steep, but this is Princeton. Even around 11 pm on a weeknight it was packed indoors. There was a live band playing as well. Also note that there is an older crowd here.

I came back with my boyfriend to give this place another chance.. once again during a period between lunch and dinner. I tried to not let my previous awful experience color our opinions.

This time we were seated in a patio, which was well-lit. Took a relatively long time to get someone to take our order. I don't remember what he ended up ordering, but I had the lamb stew. Lamb was hard to chew and there was very few chunks of anything, but I like stew so it was okay. I wasn't a fan of the soda bread because it was slightly stale. I don't remember what he ordered only that he thought it was just average.

During our lunch, a waitress came by and a glass of ice got knocked over and ice cream got on his coat.

Overall... it was an average meal for an above average price for the quality.

I'm just happy lunch didn't take more than an hour this time.

The rather plain decor belies menu offerings that are a bit more sophisticated than appearances would leave you to believe.

The braised short ribs of beef ($24) were cooked to tender perfection and finished with a nice brown gravy, elegantly presented on a rectangular plate with mashed potatoes and a roasted vegetable melange. Wines by the glass average $10.

The scoop of blueberry-lemon sorbet (from the Bent Spoon, also in Princeton) for dessert was exquisite. What seemed at first to be an odd pairing of flavors gave the tongue a fruity yet tangy kick of flavor - I savored every spoonful!

Service was attentive, although my waiter had a tendency to speak to too rapidly, requiring me to ask that he repeat himself several times.

All in all a pleasant dining experience, although not one for the budget-conscious.

I heard so much about this place prior to my visit. Honestly, I am not so sure why people were raving about this establishment. Good thing those people that were singing it's praise are not Yelp Elities!  The food is typical pub fare, a few notches above some of the other places in the area. The shepherds pie was probably the best dish at the table because of the cheddar mash topping. The lamb stew was bland, and the meat was rough. Most certainly was not fan of the sweet potato tots. It sounds good, but.....

The beer menu looked ok, and the service was friendly.

I used to visit A&B on a very regular basis and have decided not to continue as of a couple weeks ago because of the following incident.....it seems there was an incident regarding a person that was intoxicated which resulted in the owner refusing to serve any Latinos... I have heard this from a couple of the staff of A&b as well as personal friends of mine-and I choose not to support a business that condones racial discrimination. Hope this is helpful to everyone.

This is a good local pub and they have several brews on tap. I've just had drinks here and it's a good spot to meet up with someone. They also have fine dining(but I cannot vouch for the food!).

There are other places nearby(Triumph, etc. ), but I like the coziness of their bar. There's definitely nicer places to grab a meal in town though.

Great service, Great Food, Fantastic selection of beers..........but the whole place is clearly overpriced. I mean $5 for an ordinary pint when I can go down the street to Triumph and pay the same price for a great microbrew? Come on now.

    As a bar, I'd give the Alchemist a 2
As a restaurant, I'd give them a 4 for their really good food and friendly service

I give this place a 3.5 stars -- 3 stars for the Tiger Burger and 4 stars for the Deep Fried Green  Beans.

The service was nice. The crowd was older folks mostly and families. Not as pub-like as I expected. But I had only been once, so this could just be attributed to statistical deviation.

I came here with two friends because I heard that the Deep Fried Green Beans are to die for (Note: They are.) and the Tiger Burger is worth a try for burger aficionados. Sadly, the burger was only average... It was decent, but a couple days later, not memorable at all. Grossly subpar compared to Triumph's Epic Burger. The Deep Fried Green Beans are incredible and made my meal.

My friends order the Kobe Wagyu Burger and Shrimp Tacos. The Kobe Wagyu garnered the same reaction as my Tiger Burger -- good but not memorable. The Shrimp Tacos were delicious (especially the consistency of the shrimp -- so chewy), but came in a very small portion.

tl;dr COME HERE FOR THE BEANS. GREAT BEANS.

Years ago, this was the place where you could go get dressed up and have a nice steak dinner or scallops or some other high end meal.  Now it is a lot more casual. It seems like they have dressed it down in more recent times, lowered the prices, and the menu is more comfort food than the high end cuisine that I used to look forward to.  Not sure why they changed but I wish they would change it back to the way it used to be.  The food is still decent but I was not very impressed the last few times we've visited.

Devoured a rather large portion of American Kobe burger paired with a basket of fried green beans. Nice atmosphere, part pub, part fine dining. Date night, celebratory dinner with family, or even bring your kids. Solid.

Meh. Seating is cramped, can get hot if the door is not opened, service is slow and the drinks are too overpriced. Drinks are watered down and you pay to be in an area around a pseudo environment. At least if you go to Winberries, you can get the bottle specials for $3. At least it's high quality beer.

I can't speak for the food there.

I have eaten here twice with my boyfriend & we both really enjoyed our food. I am a vegetarian & have gotten a veggie burger w/ tzatziki sauce & the baked mac & cheese. Both were good. Our favorite appetizer is the green beans, so good! Great cocktails, too. I agree that food is a tad overpriced though. Overall, I recommend.

My husband  I had dinner here last night.

The service staff as a team was good, but our wait staff was either on top of us or not to be found.  We received our drinks and appetizers in a timely manner.  However, it took a while for our entrees.  Our waitress came by to tell us that we were just waiting for the macaroni and cheese.
My husband's dish was the Irish Stew, tasty, but s small seving for a dinner entree.  It was  served cold, it must have been setup before the macs and cheese was ready.  The macs and cheese was steaming hot, I burned my tongue, and the bottom of the casserole was burnt.  By the time it was cool enough  to eat, my husband was finish with his dinner, i had it wrapped.  This was very disappointing.

On a good note, the restaurant had a pleasant feel, but it was very crowded and noisy.

One of my worst experiences, ever!  and I mean Ever!  Started by asking the hostess if they have a happy hour.  She said it ended at 6.  It was 5:30.  Asked the server if they had a happy hour, she said, "I have no idea".  We decided to order some drinks and food anyway.  My drinks were in dirty glasses.  Wife's diet soda was flat, but bartender said CO2 was fine so they wouldn't take off check.  Wife got a big salad, I got crab cakes.  Asked twice for bread.  Check included flat soda and a sharing charge of $3.  Not a big deal but why?  Manager said since my wife only got a salad, he would not remove sharing charge.
The place is dirty and in dire need of a make-over!  Food is below mediocre at best.  Be aware and stay away from this hell-hole!

Had Shepperd's Pie.  It was good, but the middle was not a hot as the outsides of the dish.  Little bit of a let down. Our poor waiter was swamped and frazzled.  He forgot my meal on his ticket so I got my food after everyone was pretty much done with their meal.  (He did comp it however)  Then we ordered a few desserts to share.  Turned out that they were out of Carrot Cake, yet it did show up on our bill.  Lots of mistakes, I'm sure he was pretty new.

Either way, I really liked the atmosphere and it was a fun place to have a drink   I am a sucker for any Irish Bar that serves a good Shepperd's Pie!

We ate in he Bar Room, not the fancy front room.

Overall the food is good not great. I had the chipotle black bean burger on flatbread. The patty was mushy but had a decent flavor. They forgot the avocado so I had to ask for it.
To its credit, the overall ambiance is pleasant. In fact, diners have three to choose from; the patio, the pub or the dining room.
It's a great place to meet friends for an evening/late night drink. There's usually an open table and occasionally a live band.

    Pros:
Peaceful atmosphere and clean restaurant. Sitting in the back gives you window seating which is quite nice. Service was friendly and helpful. They also have Turkey Burgers as a substitute which is a plus if you don't eat beef.

    Cons:
Food was quite expensive for the quality (burgers and fries) and the drinks were just as pricey. Any non-standard beer was easily over 5$ but most hanging around 7-10$. The food was only average in taste, just met the basic expectations of a burger and fries.

    What we ordered:
2 Tigers Burgers (One beef, one turkey) with fries
    1 Budlight
    1 Red Wine

    Overall:
This is the type of place that you want to walk on past. I would not recommend going out and eating here on purpose. However, if you are forced to eat here, the food is average and the service is good so you will have a pleasant time.

I think this restaurant had its glory days a long time ago.

I had lunch in the bar at the back of the restaurant, which sort-of reminded me of the bar from Cheers. It was cozy and seemed like a good place to hang out over drinks.

At the recommendation of the waitress, I got the grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese, guacamole, cillantro and chipotle aioli. It was really good--but too big. And at $14, more than I would typically spend on a sandwich at lunch. The waitress was nice, and it was the sort of place where you can sit alone without feeling awkward, but I think it is a bit pricey for what it is.

I have a few friends who live near Princeton, so from time to time, I end up hanging out with them....which is a tad dangerous, b/c if we have too much fun, the ride back to Philly is tough. I had this problem recently after too much fun at Alchemist and Barrister. The bar is interesting and a little confusing. It's almost two bars in one.  The bar in the back of the restaurant is so cozy.  Low ceilings, dark colors, dim lighting, feels like a throw back to an older time.  It seems like a great place to watch a game or catch up with friends, or just have one by yourself and brood.  After a few drinks, we moved up to the front for our meal.  The drinks were good, and the bar was great.  The menu....left something to be desired.  The nachos were good, the hummus was OKAY, nothing amazing. And a tad overpriced.

I don't know that I'd go back for food, but DEFINITELY for drinks!!

I stopped here for lunch on a trip to Princeton with a friend. There aren't that many restaurants around the square, and this one looked charming since it's tucked away in a little alley. When we arrived we were presented with the option to sit in the closed in patio, pub, or dining room. We chose the patio since we were already in it and it was a sunny, quiet setting.

Everything on the menu was pretty overpriced, burgers and sandwiches were mostly $15-$16. I got the chipotle black bean burger in a pita ($13) with fries. The burger itself was super mushy and not that flavorful. It also came with tzatziki sauce which I'm pretty sure was the wrong one. My friend's medium rare burger came out well done. The only saving grace was the fries.

As far as service goes, the waitresses were nice enough but we had four different ones. They didn't seem to communicate with each other which was a little strange...

    I don't think I'll be back.

It's not exactly what I expected from a Princeton restaurant/bar.  The service was not good, it took about 10-15 minutes after we were seated to be asked by our waiter if we wanted any drinks.  During our 10-15 minute wait, my husband and I noticed that there were about 5 servers by the cash register just talking to each other.

The chicken wings were good, mussels with marinara sauce was average.  Mussels did not taste fresh, marinara sauce had good flavor.  My husband and I both ordered the Tiger Burger.  It was nicely cooked overall, but we weren't impressed with the flavor.  The fries seemed to be the best part of the meal.

The restaurant is overall just ok.

I've been coming here for a while now and the food has never disappointed me. The beer is decent and the outdoor seating area is really nice on a summer evening. I've tried a bunch of things across their menu:
-The Captain's Drunken Shrimp - pretty good. Nice flavors but a little pricey for a small app.
-Combo basket with onion rings (really really good!) particularly with an ice cold beer and the battered green beans (yum!) who knew that green beans could be a close second to french fries?
-Tiger Burger - in accordance with the whole Princeton theme. This burger was quite decent and cooked exactly how I wanted it (medium rare)
-Kobe Wagyu - I think my stomach nearly exploded trying to finish this burger but it was so good that I couldn't stop eating it! The meat was tender and fresh and the pepper jack cheese complimented the burger really well.

and how oh how could I forget
-The Shepherd's Pie - hands down the BEST dish on their menu. I have to push myself to try something new every time because I LOVE this dish! The portion is hefty, there's a nice balance between the meat and vegetables and it isn't overly salty.

Bottomline: this place is nice for a casual but more upscale dinner

This place has really gotten under my skin.

First impression-- a $14 Tiger burger (they blacken it, add cheese, and mix the condiments together to make orange-- because of Princeton!) is merely pandering, and expensive pandering at that.

Visit #1-- sat on the weirdly gloomy "patio" and ate a veggie burger that's really more like a falafel pita sandwich.  No major complaints, but not a good vibe.

Visit #2 (deal killer)-- terribly bad service.  Waitress rarely visited, was hard to flag down, and repeatedly darted away before we were finished doing business (ie ordering).  Also, just super awkward at waiting, but whatever.

And the kicker-- the bill.  It was expensive but...
Each happy hour beer was quoted at $3 and rung up at $3.50.
An upgrade to fries was quoted at $1 and rung up at $1.50.
    Not cool.

So we asked her about it.  She said that she told the table beers were $3.50, and that they were 50% off for happy hour.  The drink menu clearly shows that all the beers ordered were regularly $6... which makes one at 50% $3.  Yes.  Either she doesn't know how much things cost or she can't do math or both.  She was unapologetic and didn't bother to check her facts.

I waited behind to take it up with the manager but, surprise, he was nowhere to be found.

Unless my friends drag me here, I will NOT be returning.

Another example of a Princeton restaurant that could not exist in any other town (like the Yankee Doodle Tap Room at the Nassau Inn).

It's charming in its own way and the little alley it's on is very picturesque, but the food is really not that good. It seems to be mostly pre-packaged/pre-cooked plastic pouch food - tasteless. If you like Applebee's you'll probably be just fine. But if you actually know the difference,  you won't like it here.

The service ranges from cheerful to indifferent.

You'll get much better food next door at Teresa's.

Alchemist & Barrister was entirely disappointing. When we walked in it took more than five minutes for a host to approach us and another 5 to 8 minutes for a table, even though some were clearly available. After settling in, the server took several minutes to arrive, even though she was taking care of tables nearby. I couldn't catch her attention if I had three heads!

We had Ana Luisa's Empanadas to start off our meal. The three stuffed pastries were dry on the inside and outside with very little flavor to save it. Even drowning it in the accompaniment of salsa verde did not help.

I've been more in the mood for vegetarian options lately and decided on the Vegetable Paella. It had eggplant, portabello mushroom, chickpeas, peppers, fennel, shallots, saffron and was served over brown Basmati rice - topped with tofu. How good does that sound?! It seems the restaurant makes up the lack of food quality by putting it in nice looking dishes. Although the bowl looked great, the food did not. It was bland in color and flavor. The rice and vegetables were just submerged in, what seemed to me like buttery water?

My friend ordered the Irish Pub Lamb Stew and again very little flavor. It was supposed to come with carrots and red bliss potatoes, but the whole dish had only one or two pieces of each. My other friend ordered Shepherd's Pie with lamb. It was actually the best dish out of the three. Although, that's still not saying much. If you're stuck between the pie and the lamb stew, definitely go for the pie.

Alchemist & Barrister looks appealing on the outside. The entrance is on the side of the building with a charming stone pathway and the outdoor patio must be nice in the warm weather. I can't say the same, though, about the service and the food.

I see many people have given A & B some shabby reviews so I'm here to say... it's actually rather good! I spent V-Day lunch here with my... significant other... and I'd most likely return.

We chose to sit on the porch, which was warmed by a fantastic mock fireplace, and was sprinkled with cute attributes. To start things off we ordered a soup and salad, which came out quickly, no big surprise here considering the lack of expertise to produce such dishes. Fortunately though, the quick delivery was also teamed with tastiness! From there we ordered wraps that were reasonably priced and packed a wide spectrum of great flavors. They were served with homemade veggie chips that I still dream about to this day (big sweet potato fan!). So overall, my experience here was definitely a positive one.

Oh and definitely order the hot apple cider if you find yourself here on a cold day! You won't regret it =)

Despite a happy history between the two of us (burgers after Hun field hockey games, anyone?), A&B and I are no longer close. Its due to a variety of things from my latest visit last week, including tasteless chicken pot pie, over cooked burgers, not-so-great lamb's stew, and absolutely HORRIBLE service. I mean 35 minute wait for drinks bad service.

Maybe I'll come back in the summer for post shopping drinks on the porch, but probably not for food.

Probably one of the worst meals in my life.  My date and I arrived and as we are being shown to our table, passed by the kitchen and notice a horrid smell coming out, like piled-up garbage. We didn't think much of it, since it was confined to the kitchen.

I don't remember what my date had, but I ordered the chicken pot pie. It tasted like sour milk. Was going to send it back, but then noticed a roach crawling on the wall, and another one on the table next to me. No thanks, don't even want a perfect one now.

I tried to eat here. I can't say I actually did. We were a party of six. I ordered Shepherd's Pie. When the food came it became apparent that my food was not in the mix. The waiter told me that another server had snagged my order when it came out and that a new one would be up in three minutes.

    Ok, stuff happens.

Three minutes passed. Then 6 minutes. At the 10 minute mark the manager came to our table and asked how everything was. Our server had forgotten entirely about my meal. At this point everyone else at  our table was nearly done with their meal. I told them to just cancel my food.

Their compensation for not serving my lunch? You would think they would work to make it right? A free appetizer card delivered with the check.

Sitting at the table while everyone ate was uncomfortable not only for me but for our whole group. More was required.

I spoke to the manager on the way out. She reiterated her apology. Disappointing.

I won't be going back. Ever.

    Dinner/Bar Review.

After hungrily walking the streets of Princeton trying to figure out which place to eat. I finally settled on Alchemist & Barrister (A&B). It seemed to have a nice balance of casual and "not so casual"...

Rolling Han Solo, of course I sat at the bar.

    What I ordered:
Irish Pub Lamb Stew: lamb, carrots, potatoes, and irish soda bread
Chicken Salad: (not on current menu online) but salad included romaine lettuce, strawberries, apple (or pear), in some sort of vinaigrette dressing.

Man. I was stuffed. The stew was a nice hearty stew... it was what it was supposed to be. Nothing out of this world, but a solid stew nonetheless. The salad was quite tasty... it's actually quite similar to the summer/strawberry salad I had at Panera... definitely not very "pub-like" -- definitely more of a salad you'd feel comfortable eating in the "restaurant" part of the restaurant.

I guess because school might not be in session, I went on the atypical night, or I'm just one myself... but I didn't really sense the pretentiousness that other reviewers noticed. Maybe if you went to the sit-down "dinner napkin" side, but I wouldn't know. The bar seemed nice and cozy to me, where the bartenders seem to know all the "regulars'" names.

I had Sunday brunch here with my family.  The atmosphere is charming, especially around the holidays - if you like that ye old pub kind of stuff, which I do.  It's tastefully decorated and cozy, and the staff is very nice.

The food here is OK, and my impression is that they are going for the "gastro-pub" trend, but it's more American B & B/hotel fare than English foodie-style food.  The bread basket had too many overly-sweet things and not enough savories, and my Paris-Brest Salmon with eggs was just ok.

What I would definitely recommend?  The eggnog.  New to the menu, it is rich, frothy and strong.  They make it with peanut butter, which I found very interesting - you can't taste it, but the richness is there.

I think this place has a lot of potential, but they need to decide which direction to go on the food.  Either keep it pricey (as it is now) and turn it up a few notches, or make it cheap and cheerful. I'm not sure that I'd go back for a full meal, but I would definitely stop by in the evening for a pint and an appetizer.
