The food was bland and greasy, they where out of almost all of the seafood on the menu! I enjoyed the atmosphere and the good service but the food was just ok... There wasn't a very big pop of flavor, like you get when you eat at most other elegant restaurants. If you are looking to drop money on a date then come here!
Review Source:I read about Angelo's in the NY Times 36 hours in Apalachicola and my husband and I went there with an old friend to catch up over dinner. Â We sat on the porch, which had a spectacular view of a killer sunset and then we watched the bats come out.
We started with fried crab claws which were good, then I had a salad (good dressing, pretty average salad) while our friend had a tasty looking gumbo. Â For entrees we had the stuffed grouper, fried mullet and shrimp, and fried soft shell crab. Â The stuffed group was really delicious with roasted tomatoes on top for a great hit of acid and the crab stuffing was really great. Â I love hushpuppies and these were really spectacular. Â The grits were solid, not amazing. Â My husband's shrimp were enormous and the mullet was perfectly fried. Â Our friend's soft shell crab was generous and he enjoyed it as well. Â We all had key lime pie for dessert and it was exactly the way I like it---really creamy not too bitter. Â
My only critique would be that my husband and I agreed after we left that if they had offered us a wine list or drink menu we probably would've ordered drinks but instead drank sweet tea!
Wow, so many negative reviews but I had a positive experience! Over the weekend, I went with a group of girls to Panacea, FL. My friend has a condo and kept telling us about the restaurant so we finally went. The view is gorgeous! We sat on the patio and loved it. We had the oysters and fried blue crabs. I am not a big seafood fan but the fried blue crabs were yummy. The staff is super friendly, we had a blast talking to them. We took pictures with at least 4 different waitresses, lol.
Review Source:Angelo and Sons really is as good as it gets. Â I went here last night and got the fried seafood platter. Â To me fried seafood is the best way to eat it and this platter certainly did not disappoint. Â Everything tasted exactly like it should. Â The crab tasted like succulent, juicy crab....not loaded down with crappy fillers. Â The fried oysters tasted like oysters. Â The shrimp were not overloaded with breading and they were awesome as well. Â The herb roasted potatos tender and tasty too...with a kick of spice. Â The cheese grits really surprised me. Â I've never had them before and they completely bursted with flavor in my mouth. Â The more of them i ate the more flavors i detected...like sweet corn. Â I got the onion rings as an appetizer and they were good too. Â Everything was good and i'll definitely be back here. Â It is very expensive but i guess that is the price you pay for good seafood. Â Also, they had a very sweet and adorable (and quite young) checkout girl working the front counter. Â Go eat here.
Review Source:Ok, my buddy and I ate here last night, but almost passed because of the last few negative reviews. Â I'm glad we went as we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and found the wait staff friendly and attentive.
We started with Angelo's Oysters as as appetizer, a simple but highly inventive dish indeed.
Next was the Greek Salad and a cup of Grouper Chowder. Â The salad was good, if a little basic, but the chowder was a winner, made without the usual milk or cream enhancements.
We each opted for the Surf and Turf, a perfectly cooked 14 ounce Ribeye with Grilled Head On Shrimp for me and a topping of oyster, shrimp and scallop delight for my dining companion.
A selection of home made desserts was offered but we were both too content to try any of them.
Overall, a little pricey yes, but well worth the money if you make your selections from many of the Greek inspired dishes that allow the chef's passions to shine.
Almost forgot, Â they had The Greatful Dead Satellite Radio Channel playing the whole time. Â Awesome!
I think the owners of this restaurant have a decision to make. Are they going to continue serving mediocre food and lower their prices, or commit to serving higher quality food and keep the prices the same? Because serving average food for $20-$30 a plate obviously isn't cutting it (judging from these reviews alone).
Everything on the menu is very simple, and extremely greasy, oily and over-salted. You would think that for such a high price tag that the food would be fresh, super tasty and show at least a little creativity. But this unfortunately isn't the case.
Instead, the menu reads like a grocery list: Grouper. Steak. Flounder. Meaning that it's all prepared the same way, with no thought or love going into how it's being cooked. What a shame, because with the prime location and view, this place could really be a great restaurant.
The salad is just iceberg lettuce with a few cucumbers, the broiled fish is breaded (??) and over salted, and the sides (french fries, baked potato, etc.) are all extremely basic. The kicker: it costs an extra $3 just to get a side of vegetables instead of a starch! The service reminds me of my hometown diner back in NC, and again definitely doesn't match the high price tag.
So all in all, a pretty average greasy southern fish place, that is way, WAY overpriced.
We arrived just in time for sunset - a little chilly to be outside but it was beautiful. A friend with a house nearby took us for dinner, we had oysters $4 a doz, which was noted by someone at our table that they are farmed, that is why they are small and so cheap. They came on a beer tray that would have been nice to have shaved ice underneath, but for $4 bucks, I won't be soo picky, they were small but tasty and were gobbled up.
Our waitress was everything you would want in a southern joint, except this is a bit more upscale for a "joint. But she did make it pretty entertaining and reminded me of what I love about how friendly people in the South are.
I had the Head on shrimp dish with a side of cheese grits. Oh my, one taste and I became giddy. After having asked earlier what the "Angelo's special seasonings were" and being told they were top secret I tried to dissect the flavors but my brain was spinning I was so happy. The shrimp were large and sweet, the sauce a bit salty but fab.
I sucked the heads, sopped the juice and regrettably shared a morsel with a table mate - what can i say I was not thinking straight.
Seriously, order it and I hope you enjoy as much as I did.
We had a late lunch here while traveling through the Florida Panhandle. It was a sunny, pleasant day so we sat on their outside deck...very scenic overlooking the bay. We started out with fresh oysters..very good at $4/dozen. Our dinners were fresh tilapia (char grilled), also very good. We really enjoyed the food and service. I would have given Angelo & Sons 5 stars except for the poor beer selections on their menu.
Review Source:I took some friends here after a day at Alligator Point and I knew it was a bad idea after we were ignored by the waitstaff for about ten minutes. I had to get up and find our server. When drinks were brought, all was well, but my fish sandwich was tasteless, and as a native Floridian who knows seafood - this was NOT fresh seafood. The grande finale - I had to get up and hunt down our waitress so I could pay inflated and unreasonable prices so I could leave. This was my first time visiting here after years of hearing how good it was.
Review Source:Reallyy fresh, delicious seafood. This place is a must go to while you're on the gulf coast. The only real downside: THE COST. I mean, for seafood I guess the cost is standard fare but I'm not used to spending at least $20 on a meal, plus a lottt more for drinks and appetizers. Delicious escargot and some of the freshest fish around!
Review Source:We were motorcycling through the panhandle and passed by Angelo & Sons as we headed up US 98. The chalkboard advertised a seafood stuffed tomato my wife found intriguing so we made plans to stop back by for an early dinner. We arrived about 4:30, just at opening. This place is huge, with a very nice location literally right over the bay. At this time of day it was practically empty, on Wednesday night. Â Which brings me to my complaint and reason for only 3 stars. The service was subpar. It wasn't like the servers were overwhelmed. Â I ordered charbroiled amberjack which was quite good. The seafood stuffed tomato was a type of seafood au gratin stuffing into 2 tomato halves. It looked very pleasing but was cold inside - apparently taken out of the oven too soon. But our waitress had disappeared. We finally called another server over who acted surprised but took it back to the kitchen. After 15 minutes or so our server showed up with the reheated dish and a quick "I'm sorry". We never saw her again till time to collect the check. No tea refills, no offer of a free dessert, no apology from manager. She didn't even check back to be sure the meal was okay the 2nd time around.
The prices are not cheap. $20 - $30 bucks per entree and everything is a la carte so add another $5 for salad and a side. For this kind of money the wait staff should be better trained.
I worked here selling jewelry through high school. The original restaurant was destroyed by Hurricane Dennis. The food is going to be good. The prices are much higher than they used to be but its more upscale than it used to be too. Make sure to check out the posted specials, they are normally the most fresh meals. Have a Panacea Painkiller. Sit outside and enjoy the bay if you can. The sunset there can be beautiful and is a great memory of mine. I agree with the other reviews that that high price is the only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars.
Review Source:We hadn't been to Angelo's since before they remodeled and revamped their menu. I was so amazed at the food. It was excellent. It had been some time and the last time we went it wasn't that great fro the price.
The changed up the menu and made everything *al acart* so you mix and match for own food orders.
It sits on the the bay and the view we had was beautiful, food was better than good too though it's still fairly pricey for the area, which is the ONLY reason it's not getting 5 stars.
I will be happy to eat here once more. Kinda missed the place.
10 years ago this was a great place to go for upscale seafood in the Panacea/Sopchoppy/Alligator Point area. They rebuilt after the hurricane, and apparently they fired all the good cooks at the same time. We've tried it three times over the past three years, and each time was worse than the last. The Baltimore crabcake was drowning in oil, covered with cheap Parmesan, and so salted I sent it back. The salad had definitely seen better days. As to the seafood entrees, horribly over-priced, oily, greasy, salty... My family loves seafood, and it's a pity about Angelo's, but I'd recommend Spring Creek instead, or for fried shrimp, Scratch Cakes or Posey's. A pity, because it used to be really good. I don't know why other people are giving them good reviews, maybe they don't eat a lot of seafood.
Review Source:Excellent but surprisingly very expensive seafood (around $30 per entree). Â I normally hate seafood prepared by Americans, but this food is excellent! Â
Stuffed flounder with deviled crabmeat - amazing. Â Broiled, topped with onions with an unnecessary side of melted butter. Â Flavorful and not too salty. Â Comes with perfectly crispy hushpuppies and fries. Â These portions are huge.
Seafood Combination Platter with the Shrimp, Deviled Crab, Oysters, Scallops, and Grouper Fingers - excellent when broiled. Â I do NOT like the fried version because the fried batter overwhelms the natural flavor of the seafood and makes everything taste the same. Â Definitely get broiled unless if you're a Southerner who loves everything fried.
Captain Colada - lighter than the Nutty Colada, but delicious. Â You almost can't taste the alcohol. Â One of the best frozen pina coladas I ever had.
Nutty Colada - excellent. Â creamier than the Captain Colada. Â The amaretto gives it a richer flavor than the Captain Colada. Â The best frozen pina colada here.
virgin Pina Colada - also frozen, delicious, but almost like a smoothie. Â The alcoholic coladas have an extra kick.
Very good food - I would give them five stars except that it was quite expensive. Â I had the stuffed shrimp which were butterflied and stuffed with blue crab meat. Â My friend had the South of the Border grouper, which was very tasty but seemed pretty oily to me. Â All the meals come with a salad (and an excellent house Greek dressing, of which they will generously give you more to take with your leftovers), a choice of potatoes or cheese grits, and excellent hush puppies. Â I also ordered the Trader's Tea cocktail which sounded like it would be more potent than it was, but was tasty. Â They have a lovely view of the sunset from their deck and I highly recommend eating dinner out there to watch the sunset. Â The staff was very friendly and efficient. Â I also enjoyed the pictures on the wall of the former restaurant being washed away by hurricane Dennis (scary stuff). Â I would return.
