Absolutely awful food and service. It took 45 minutes for us to receive our food. First, the order came out wrong -- the chicken salad sandwich was on white rather than wheat, and they didn't give us the donut that we ordered. Mistakes are fine, but they then returned with the sandwich on wheat, but left the white bread in the middle of the newly assembled sandwich.
The sandwich was more of a mayonnaise sandwich than a chicken salad sandwich. The bison burger and potato salad were bland, bland, bland. The French fries we ordered with the burger had no flavor, were totally limp, and tasted like pure grease.
All that said, the famed donut was pretty good. Not the best, but I wouldn't shy away from it.
While you might expect the Apple House restaurant to be decorated like a nice mom and pop tourist spot, it was closer to a glorified gas station.
Bottom line: pass on this one.
Got in around lunch time with my bro specifically for the donuts (thanks yelp!). Â Donut was less than a dollar and was served fresh (literally). Â It was still hot when i took about. Â Donut was super good. Â A little too much on the brown sugar for my liking but you could definitely taste the hints of apple. Â Wish the donut was a little bit bigger (for comparison, it is smaller than a dunkin donut), but for the price I can't really complain much. Â So bros and boos, if you ever in the Shenandoah Valley, you should definitely check this place out.
Review Source:I'm a local.
The donuts are very good and that's pretty much all I can say about the Apple House.
They do alot of things ok, but not one thing great. The breakfast is greasy with that weird sausage patty this is slick and shiny like the ones from McDonalds. You know...the generic patties. Unlike the quality one at places like Cracker Barrel and Bob Evans.
The burgers are also OK, nothing special and served with potato chips! Not fries. Fries are extra. The BBQ is store bought I think, or at least it tastes like it. Absolutely no smoke flavor in it. No burnt ends, or anything that would indicate authentic BBQ. Their and the Exxon bbq across the street tastes exactly the same! No kidding!
All they got going for them is the gift shop / tourist trap. If you really want good BBQ, go into town during the summers in front of Two Fat Butchers. They have a smoker set up with carryout meals. Pulled pork sandwich, chips and a can of soda for $5! That's cheaper and better than a McDonalds combo meal! 1/2 rack ribs for $10.
Oh, not to mention expensive! A cheese burger + bacon + fries + a drink costs $10 and change!! F that!
Stopped by for breakfast on Sunday, 5/4. I had a #4 breakfast with coffee. Nice portions. The apple donuts were great, as usual. No onions in home fries, which was a bummer. Home fries were severely burnt (charred black) in some spots while undercooked in others.
I'm usually here for the pulled pork BBQ sandwiches at lunch time, and it's the only reason why this place gets 3 stars. For breakfast alone, I'd give it a 2.
It probably goes without saying that fresh, warm donuts are an ideal pre or post-hiking snack. After all, you don't want to totally deplete your body's natural cinnamon sugar stores. That could be fatal.
Thank goodness that Apple House is nearby (if you're in the Linden/Front Royal area.) Their apple butter cinnamon donuts are outrageously good. They serve them piping hot and coated with cinnamon sugar. Sometimes you can purchase them pre-packed, but don't do it. Just get in that long line. The fresh donuts are so worth it.
In the fall months, they also offer pumpkin donuts. I haven't been lucky enough to get these fresh, but they're still tasty out of the package. Between the fabulous donuts and the occasional free wine tastings, the Apple House is always worth a visit.
I couldn't possibly travel south of the Mason-Dixon Line without grabbing some BBQ and Apple House does not disappoint. I ordered the small pork BBQ sandwich, which arrived overflowing on a hamburger-sized bun and accompanied by pickles, chips, and coleslaw. I'm not a fan of coleslaw, but I could appreciate its freshness. The chips were nice and salty, too. But the BBQ was the highlight of the meal. It was tangy and a little spicy, with plenty of chunks of pork and sauce. I wish that the pork was a little more tender, as I really had to move my jaw to chew it up. But I was pleased overall because it tasted great. Also, try the doughnuts! They are clearly fried on the premises and they have a wonderful cinnamon flavor.
The restaurant is also attached to a little store of sorts, which had an unparalleled selection of BBQ and hot sauces for sale. I was seriously blown away by that. I was not as impressed by the bathroom, which had an odd smell, but it did the job.
And make sure you check out the slow-cooker on the side of the building. It's shaped like a pig-- curly tail, eyelashes, and all! So cute... and morbid, now that I think about it.
I'm so glad my friends and I decided to stop by this place before heading out of town. It's such a quaint and friendly place to enjoy a fresh meal. We knew we were making a good decision when we could see & smell the BBQ pork from the big oven right next to the main building.
Here, you order, pay, sit down, and your food is brought to you. During the time you're ordering & paying, you'll see a sampling platter of their cinimon-apple-donuts... TRY THEM! They're amazing!
I ordered their BBQ pork jumbo sized, which is like the size of a big-mac bun, whereas the regular sized sandwich is like the size of a regular hamburger bun. The pork itself was in a tomato based sauce but was also a bit vinigary, so I suppose it was a mix of the two types of southern BBQ. I enjoyed the BBQ pork but it wasn't the greatest. I felt like the meat could have been a little bit more tender but it was still good enough to finish it all including the shrapnel that fell out of the messy sandwich.
The "slaw" is good, probably home-made, and the chips also taste home-made and are delicious & salty. Overall, I would come here again if I were in town but I wouldn't travel many moons just for this place itself.
First, let me say we did the touristry thing and just stopped for the antiques and stuff five years ago. Â There weren't many antiques but alot of food items, none of which were impressive to us at the time, but we did see the restaurant but they weren't busy. Â So we didn't stop to eat back then. Â A terrible mistake. Â Today, our plans for a good day outside faded with a cold north wind, and we struggled with every family's toughest decision about whether to go to a chain restaurant our kids like and enjoy or go back to a place that intrigued us long ago. Â Against the kids choice, we decided we wanted a family type of meal. Â
When we got there, we were a little taken back by the menu. Â A BBQ place with no ribs, no brisket, and just basic pulled pork BBQ and some common burgers and chicken items. Â We were disappointed by the selection. Â But I love pulled pork,(they offer a jumbo sandwich but they don't give the option of having the sauce on the side) Â the wife loves chicken, the oldest kid loves a great hamburger, and the two youngest were born to eat kids meal chicken nuggets. Â Not precisely the BBQ heaven we thought we were going into but good enough.
While waiting for the food, I saw a local man go up and order apple cinammon donus and spend like 9 dollars for them. Â That is a huge amount of money for a local. Â I immediately knew they must be special. Â But I waited for our food to arrive before spending anymore money in a restaurant that wasn't very busy. Â I walked around, and looked in the kitchen, looking for signs that this place wasn't clean and things like that. Â No way they could not be busy unless there was an obvious flaw. Â I saw nothing to give me a concern at all. Â I eagerly awaited our food.
What we got was PERFECT. Â I am always careful about BBQ sauce, I hate it when I can't just eat the meat. Â I like to choose on my own the amount of sauce I think is appropriate. Â But what came out was sauce mixed into the meat, and while there was a definite twang, it didn't hit deep into the stomach, but was like some magical flavor I never had before. Â It was outstanding. Â Not long afterwords, my wife raved about the chicken sandwich. Â the kids raved about the chicken nuggests. Â The oldest raved about the half pound burger. Â I heard nothing but quiet on our hour rode home from there. Â
The menu was limited though. Â That is our biggest complaint. Â If they make these things so well, surely they could do more and attract more patrons. Â Just a thought anyway. Â I know it is a tough call because they have a limited number of people who might pass by anymore. Â They aren't on the primary exit to skyline drive so that is a hinderance. Â But I think the locals would support a somewhat, but not much larger, expanded menu.
Spur of the moment visit on our way to Shenandoah NP. Â We tried several infused honeys, cheese ball mixes, and of course donuts. Â Everything was yummy. Â Did some Christmas shopping but, unfortunately, the line was wayyyyyy too long for the restaurant - my husband didn't want to wait.
Review Source:Great roadside gift shop/BBQ for post apple picking/vineyard tastings in the area. Â The fresh, hot apple cider donuts are so good I have seriously considered driving all the way from Arlington out here (about an hour each way) to get them on a Sunday morning. Â They also have good, but not fantastic BBQ. Â This is also the only place I have found Slap Ya Mama seasonings in the area, but I have admittedly not searched everywhere. Â They have a good selection of local wines and jams for sale as well. Â The coffee is not so great, but overall I make a point to come here every time I'm in the area.
Review Source:I took the family to Front Royal to get out of the house. Â People on Reddit recommended it so thought we would try it out. Â
We had the pulled pork sandwich. Â It was horrible. Â One of the worst pulled posrk sandwiches I have ever had. Â
The bread was a store bought hamburger bun and it was burnt, black. Â It crumbled as I touched it it was so dry. Â
The meat in the sandwich was horrible. Â It was dry, over cooked, and had the consistency of beef jerky. Â
The baked beans were inedible. Â The cole slaw was mediocre. Â
Our food was $20.00 forr 2 sandwiches a drink beans and cole slaw. Â What a rip off. Â Everything in the store was ridiculously over priced.
As a side not I bought some of the donuts and I thought they were very good. Â I ate the donuts the day after I bought them, and they were still good. Â I gave them a second star for the donuts.
Pros:
The apple donuts are great when freshly made. The apple dumplings are sooo tasty. The apple crumb pie is really good too. I've had the breakfast, and it's good in a Waffle House kind of way.
Cons:
The barbecue is very saucy and good, but not as good as you would hope from a place that specializes in barbecue. They rarely have the very tasty apple dumplings. The decor is not as small town, country cute as the outside indicates. It's a little more gas station/rest stop-ish. The restrooms are generally pretty icky.
Summary:
I'll return because it's convenient. If you are out for a day in the country, it's okay, but there are better places in the area. It could be awesome with a few updates.
It has a convenient location, it's next to the road to Shebandoah National Park. And it looks very local.
We stopped to try a doughnut and drink some coffee.
Inside is even more cuter than outside. It has a small market with local prduducts like honey from Virginia.
The doughnuts are very tasty and cheap ($0,79 each). But they are very small. My husband couldn't resist to eat a second one.
It's a great value for money.
They also serve breakfast and BBQ.
Such a cute little mom and pop  'side of the road cafe' where you can grab breakfast all day and the best pies ever!!! Loved the pumpkin and apple pie, however, the doughnuts they  are so well-known for were such a waste of $7.99 /dozen. When I got them, they were cold and not very fresh. Oh well, maybe nest time I'll catch a fresh batch.
Ps:  they sell  home made apple cider (which I never got to try) and lots of Knicks knacks at the general store. Great for tourists:-)
If I were thinking clearly, I'd probably give this three stars. The famous apple cider donuts need to be served piping hot to deliver on their promise, and sometimes aren't; the seasonal pumpkin donuts are dry and forgettable; the dining area isn't well ventilated, meaning you blink through donut smoke while you eat and smell like donuts for days after. The gift shop is an ADHD sufferer's nightmare, stuffed with inspirational cutesies, Vera Bradley, and $22 apple-and-pumpkin-pie flavored wine that alas tastes just as gross as it sounds. Think the Cracker Barrel gift shop, only with more alcohol and fewer obnoxious wicker chairs.
But! A childhood full of magical visits to a place does something to your rational mind. I love the Apple House because it reminds me of driving down i66 toward i81, singing Christmas carols with my family and stopping by for juuust one hot donut (and a bathroom break). It's about family and love for me--as it is, I suspect, for the extraordinarily kind and polite staff.
Served hot, those donuts are better than anything you can imagine. There are a couple of slam-dunks on the dining menu too. I dissolve in a puddle of moans every time I bite into "the Virginian," their grilled ham and cheese sandwich. I find their savory specialty, the pork barbecue, a little generic, but its talents shine in those delicious barbecue cheese fries. (Yeah, don't come here if you're on a diet.) And pick up a "pumpkin bread" to go. It's not so much bread as bread pudding, and my God, is it good.
As I chewed through my last lunch here, I got a little teary. It could have been appreciation for the deliciousness. It could have been nostalgia for the happy family life that has brought me here so many times over the years. And it could have been irritation from the acrid donut smoke that was once again filling the dining room. I suspect it was a little of all three.
Blech. Â Dear Apple House, I wanted to like you so much since my friend had been raving about your doughnuts the minute we left Vienna. Â But, I was just so disappointed on so many levels. Â First, the doughnuts were cold and greasy--oh so disgustingly greasy that I felt like I would never feel ungreasy again. Â The apple cinnamon doughnuts are tasty (definitely the original are better than the pumpkin ones) but they were cold and drenched in oil. Â I've heard that they are delicious when hot and despite having hot available doughnuts fresh from the oven--we were served cold--frozen cold--drenched in oil doughnuts. Â What a let down.
I also ordered the pork BBQ sandwich which came out on soggy bad generic store-bought bread (or so it seemed to be that kind). Â Not a great meal.
We came to the Shenandoah to enjoy a classic fall weekend in the Mid-Atlantic, and our visit to Apple House on our way out of town fit perfectly into that theme. It's a hard-to-miss country store and restaurant on the side of John Marshall Highway. The store area sells baked goods, kitchy decorations, wine, gifts and greeting cards. The restaurant is a small dining room where you stand in line to order at the counter, and then food is brought to your table. As the place is pretty popular, there was a line the entire time we were there that the staff seemed to struggle to keep up with. Our very simple order of a breakfast sandwich and a eggs and bacon plate probably took close to 20 minutes to arrive.
Food-wise, the breakfast platter (eggs, bacon, toast and home fries) was nothing to write home about, and the breakfast sandwich was good (delicious ham) but would have been better on some nicer bread. The apple donuts and apple fritters are what they are known for, and though I am not a donut person, everyone I was with seemed to really enjoy them.
All in all, a classic country experience with decent food and very affordable to this city girl. A breakfast platter, breakfast sandwich, soft drink, coffee and an apple donut cost us $16, which is pretty insane by my standards.
DELICIOUS apple donuts - the apple fritters were sub-par (cold, greasy, and heavy). Â The rest of the food was truck-stop type food. Â I agree with the previous reviewer about the dry BBQ. Â The sauce wasn't very tasty either. Â Cole slaw was jarred and not fresh. Â The iced tea was water. Â
If you're in the area, stop for donuts and a coffee. Â But pass by everything else!
Hit this place up on my way back from rock climbing in the boonies. I was dirty and starving, and Apple House looked like the smoked pork equivalent of a desert oasis.
It was good, but not out of this world great. I ordered the BBQ Sundae, which was mashed potatoes covered in pulled pork, cole slaw, a pickle, and served with chips. What could have been an incredible decadent meal was sort of boring.
Before riding my high horse (honda civic) back to DC, I did get a thrill out of giggling at the stupid knick knacks and Christian self help books.
So good it will make ya SLAP YO' MOMMA! (And not feel a bit guilty)
Sweet BBQ Jesus! The Apple House was the perfect ending to my Virginia Mini Moon Trip!
Off a little country road this place is nothing short than foodie heaven.
When I'm in VIRGINIA and out in the Country I want to see MOOSE HEADS and DEAR HEADS on the wall of a restaurant. I want a big cartoon sign of a Pig with the words "BBQ" lit up on top of it. I want sweet country charm and bottles of hot sauce and apple butter for sale.
Thanks to The APPLE House... my wishes came true.
As you enter you smell the FRESH APPLE DONUTS & FRITTERS bakin'. Of course they have a huge tray of them for you to sample (slap me silly).
As you read over their lip smacking menu... you come across their BBQ PORK PLATTER SPECIAL. Two words.... DO IT!
I left The APPLE House with a big ole' smile and a tummy that was happier than a dog in a bacon & peanut-butter filled bathtub. ;-)
Now I'm really a fan of the gift shop and the wine store selection more so than the little restaurant part. Not that certain food wasn't so bad but unfortunately what I got was. Bison burger, it should never ever be over cook that is just criminal. However wife's cheese steak was really good. Service for the restaurant is super slow I don't know what they were doing there but it took a loooooooooooooong time just to fix some cold sandwiches for the table next to us let alone hot for wife and me. I don't' know maybe they were just having a baad day back there in the kitchen.
We did really really enjoy the charm of this quaint little place. It has such a certain thing about it that says small town country mountainous. Hard to describe but we really liked it. Lots of little things all about this shop I was even trying to get one of those Daniel Boon coon skin hats for wife but she wasn't really going for that. We did manage to do some wine tasting while there with local wineries being support by them. Several bottles came home with us after that. Other little things include Christmas trinkets, local preserves and local honey being sold. Just a nice dark quaint feel to it....... I just said that right? I'm loving it.
Wife and I had a nice little time there exploring all the little nooks and cranny's of this old place. So come here for the local charm, the local preserves, the local wine not so much for the restaurant part unless you are getting it fast and cold. If you are on your way up to the caverns like we were then allow a lot of time just think of turtles marching through molasses.
I come here for their fruit jelly!
I have never had their bbq food so I cannot comment on it.
Country store has a good collection of quaint stuff.
But their jelly selection is awesome - we love them all - peach, blueberry, strawberry, orange marmalade. The stuff is locally made and good!
They also have a good selection of Virginia wines.
I've had better bbq in Kansas City. Â Pulled pork tasted a little dry even. Â The cole slaw was soggy and heavy on the mayo, which I usually like but not this time. Â The grilled cheese was standard. Â The cook definitely likes to use butter tho. Â The storefront is very cute, and makes for a nice picture.
Super duper cheap, but I'd rather pay more for better food.
Yes, this place is as good as other Yelpers say. Prices are very reasonable and portions are generous. I'm not usually into places where the fries are called "American Fries", but I give Apple House a pass. It's more welcoming than the prominent Christian literature stands in the cafe area would initially suggest (to this agnostic).
They have breakfast all day, and some of the breakfast combos come with 2 of their donuts. Even better if you've been hiking or wine tasting all day, after 4pm they start dinner service. One of the dinner specials is all-you-can-eat pancakes. The BBQ is pretty good but my favorite are their baked beans, which is an unusual combo of pinto, black beans and chickpeas with a lot of pineapple. The buffalo burgers are good too.
If you don't like Vera Bradley or Crocs there's not much in the store section for you, although the selection of VA wine is pretty good - and you can get some bottles cold in the easy-to-miss cooler behind the cafe register.
"Mmmm, barrrr-bah-quuue. Looove," husband sighs, wiping his fingers and licking his chops upon finishing a massive bite of The Apple House's pulled pork BBQ sammie with a forkful of crunchy, sweet homemade slaw thrown in for good measure, "And this bison burger is insane, too." Â The BBQ is smoky, tangy, spicy, sweet, tender...everything you want your BBQ to be and more (husband thinks it's some of the best he's ever tried). Â The burgers are cooked-to-order, flavorful, and juicy.
Bottom line: the food here is ridiculously good if you know what to get off the menu and love meat (if you couldn't tell from the above melodrama: get the BBQ platter for SURE, or the homemade burgers, bison included. Â Also, the baked and fried dessert goods as so many other reviewers have mentioned). Â The service is slower than molasses, but this is a country friggin' store in Linden friggin' VA. Â We in the cut up here y'all. Â But that's also why they make BBQ you'd slap your own mama for a taste of, too. Â We make a *point* of stopping here on our way back from trips to Shenandoah or beyond. Â
Oh, but vegetarians like me will need to make a meal out of the doughnuts and cole slaw. Â Which, by the by, is good.
If you're not into Vera Bradley eyeglass cases or NFL Jibbitz to shove in your lime green Crocs, skip most of the store. Â Focus on the little "made-in-VA" section of wines and BBQ sauces if you're looking for a souvenir to take back home with you. Â The selection is top-notch.
Ok let me first say that I give this place 4 stars because of the price and taste. Their BBQ pork isn't that great but for the price it's good. Their apple donuts and fritters are super yummy. Definitely have to try some if you swing by. Honestly, the food is more 3 stars then 4. Â
Honestly, this place was a little dissapointing to me. The atmosphere felt more like a deli then it did an actual restaurant. The serving size of my pork sandwich was a little small but that's good because you really don't need a king size sandwhich all the time and for the price it fits.
The pulled BBQ was shredded and tasted/felt more like a sloppy Joe. It wasn't what I was expecting. Their baked beans, fries, and green beans were damn good. But the coleslaw was, well it was different. (very mushy and watered down)
If I'm ever in town and hungry after a nice long hike in Shennandoa I may come back if only for their nice apple desserts:)
Such a fun and yummy place! Â If you are ever out near Linden, I recommend stopping at the Apple House.
We had the jumbo pulled pork BBQ sandwich and it was good, a tad on the sweet BBQ side, but good. Â My dad ordered the Wildcat and said it was GREAT! Â Also, you MUST try the apple donuts....YUMMY...sugar and fat....can't go wrong.
All in all a fun place to do lunch....you can check out the gift shop. Â I heard the breakfast is good and I can't wait to go back and give it a try. Â Sadly (yet it's a good thing) Linden is a ways out of D.C., so we won't get out there too often.
I had the Jumbo Pork BBQ Sandwich. It took a long time to come out and it was cold and WAY too sweet. I guess that's because of their home made sauce that's probably just based on apples. But it was way too sweet for me. The cole slaw was definitely way too sweet as well.
My fiancee had the Grilled Cheese sandwich. It was pretty good and probably the reason my sandwich took so long, but it's still just a grilled cheese sandwich. The shoestring fries that came with it were good and crispy though.
We also had apple donuts. They were fluffy but unspectacular. All I really tasted was sugar.
Oh, and they sell a ton of different hot sauces in their store off to the side. I could spend an hour just checking that out.
Now THAT's some BBQ!
The Apple House is a family restaurant nestled away just off Route 66 in Linden. Â You'd pass it up but for one thing it does right. Â Actually that's two things.
1) Applewood SMOKED BBQ.. Â Incredibly woodsy and tasty smoked in their smoker "Petunia". Â
2) The donuts... oh THOSE DONUTS.. Â apple donuts cooked with apple butter and no shortage of lard. Â Straight to arteries good.
The other food items are basics such as subs, burgers (which are big), and a plate of insane cheese and chili fries that I recommend you don't get cause it will give you a heart-attack in one sitting.
If I am in the neighborhood usually passing through Skyline drive, or checking out the wineries, I ALWAYS stop here for their BBQ and donuts. Â You can't get food like this in DC ANYWHERE, certainly not the BBQ.. Â great place, great service, and rural inexpensive. Â
Can't be beat!
The apple donuts were delish. Â Fresh, fluffy, loaded with cinnamon-sugary goodness.
The staff was not particularly friendly or helpful, but they gave us our donuts and some "farm-fresh" (maybe? as advertised?) apples to take on the road.
There is the world's largest assortment of Vera Bradley EVERYTHING for all your girly, paisley-overload shopping needs. Â And it looks like they are setting up for Christmas in the shop, too. Â There were definitely a few cute ideas for little gifts.
As a side note, I had been all excited for freshly pressed, piping hot apple cider with the much-hyped donuts.  I don't know who is responsible for putting this idea in my head (umm, maybe because they call themselves an "Apple House"?  Shouldn't apple cider be compulsory??!), but I was greatly disappointed to discover they have no such thing.  I think the nearest thing was a cider made from mix, or maybe just apple juice à la Minute Maid.
I'd still go back for donuts since this place is so close to I-66, but seriously, Apple House - start making some real cider! Â And put some smiles on while you're doing it!! Â Thanks.
*************
Edit: Â Their website says they carry fresh pressed cider in the gift shop "seasonally (late September and October)". Â Well, we were there in mid-October and the girl working in the cafe definitely said they had no fresh cider available. Â Maybe they just don't serve it up in the cafe - but they SHOULD!
Breakfast food was amazing-- I got the 3 eggs and bacon platter for REAL cheap.
A friend of mine got the ribs and they came out looking like dinosaur bones.. which is awesome cos the meal itself was very inexpensive, but it probably made for a pain to eat.
The other friend got a pulled pork sandwich which looked real good-- I don't think she had any complaints.
Every time we camp in Shenandoah, we make sure to stop in at the Apple House on the way back to civilization. Â Your personal trainer or your weight watchers group wouldn't be pleased to hear you ate here, but they would be jealous. Â There are so many delicious treats - pork sammy, breakfast foods, etc. - and the hot cider is so hot and cider-y - perfect after hiking on a cold day.
Yesterday we stopped in for a post-camping snack. Â I poked around the shop full of heinously ugly and totally overpriced knick knacks to get a laugh while my fiance waited in line for food. Â When I got up to the counter, he had already ordered - I asked "did you get cider? Â OK cool." Â Then I saw there was a dish full of donut samples . . . SCORE! Â The woman behind the counter was back there getting our cider, so I crammed as many pieces of donut into my face as possible until she came back - why was my fiance laughing at me? Â I do that all the time, right? Â Well, turns out he had ordered us cider . . . and donuts. Â Good thing I always have more room in the tank for that warm, fried goodness - a lesser sweets-eater might have saved it for later, but I just went for it. Â Why let my poor donut get cold?!
Overall the food is pretty reasonably-priced and delicious. Â The tchotchkes throughout the rest of the store are silly but fun. Â You might enjoy perusing the shelves - maybe pick up some tasty jam or apple butter.
If you are ever in the area, you must, Must, MUST stop by The Apple House. Â Whether you are out for a weekend drive, or if you are just in the mood for some good country cooking, this place is a must pull in.
I went here while out in VA back in October. Â The leaves were just changing. Â The air was crisp. Â And they were roasting peanuts outside. Â The smell was amazing.
We walked inside, ordered food to go, due to the fact that there was not one seat available. Â The food was delicious. Â The apple doughnuts were to die for. Â The Alpenglow, simply delicious. Â The country store was great, as they had a wide selection of everything from jams to jellies to t-shirts to candles. Â
Seriously, I might just come back down to VA just to stop at The Apple House before going down Skyline Drive.
Can't wait to eat here base on the other reviewer's comments. I stopped in here today and got myself a cup of their hot apple cider. Wow! Fantastic! The cider is not some filtered clear cider - it's got lots of spice and stuff in it - loved it!
They also have lots of goodies available to purchase: hot sauces, barbecue sauces, jellies, jams, honeys, syrups, and a whole lot more! Next time I come through here I will spend a bit more time checking out the place!
Their apple donuts.... omgwtfblargharghaheartattack! I love the little buggers. Buy a box full, they won't last you the car ride home. The pulled BBQ here is pretty good. Â Sandwiches are offered in 'small' and 'large' sizes; I have trouble finishing a large. They come with some chips and slaw, at a good price.
They also make their own apple cider... it's really good!. An apple a day keeps the doctor away!
Good Eats on the way to Sky Line Drive.
The Apple House is a craft store and restaurant that serves up some tasty down home country food. It's a great stop on the way to Sky Line Drive to refuel and get ready to see the amazing sites of the Shenandoah.
Breakfast is served all day. The most expensive breakfast platter that they offer is $6.99 and comes with 3 eggs, two pancakes, bacon, sausage, ham and two doughnuts. Â The meal is huge and the doughnuts are apple cider doughnuts that are rolled in cinnamon sugar that are worth the trip alone.
We had the lunch platter for $7.29. It comes with BBQ chopped pork that is smoked over hickory and apple wood providing it with a sweet smokey flavor and piled on a soft bun, next to the Apple House beans which are every type of bean (garbanzo, navy, kidney, cannelli and black) in a spciy sauce, coleslaw, chips, a pickle and a medium soda. It was a sweet deal for under $10 and some of the best BBQ in the DC area.
We got two doughnuts for dessert ($1.20; they're $.55 a piece) and our meal was complete, cheap and very good.
