Ok, my nickname may be MamaCAKES but the girl loves these fried pies!! My sister lives in Norman and this is a required pit stop on our road trips from Dallas. Btw, I'm eating a fried apple pie as I write this! I was smart enough to stash one from out return trip today for a 3 am (yes I said a.m.!!) snack at work!! Â I haven't had the savory pies but I've pretty much tasted all the sweet flavors. Apple, peach and cherry rock. Â The coconut is amazing but sooooo sweet I can only eat a lil. The crust is flaky and not greasy at all. The pies are large and easily split. The shop is an old Sinclair gas station with a dinosaur on top. Today I noticed Mr Sinclair has been joined by a giant rooster! Bizarre and I love it!!
Review Source:HOLY CRAP, this place makes good little pies. Â If you like pie AT ALL, you need to stop here. Â I ordered a peach pie around brunch time. Â I was worried it would be greasy and heavy due to the fried nature of the snack. Â I am happy to report that it wasn't that greasy or heavy! It was so delicious, so un-greasy and and un-heavy, that I wolfed my first pie in about 1 minute. After that, I proceeded to order a cherry pie. Â I ate several bites, and though it was delicious, but I really had to save the rest for later. Â I was full!
Review Source:Tip- if going N on I-35, be sure to turn left when you exit exit 51. I was blind as a bat and had us all the way down the street on the other side. Lol
Now about these famed original fried pies. I think these are the kinda thing that are either yours or they're not. We saw a lot of people come in and out ordering individual pies, several pies, or boxes of pies in the 20 minutes we were there. Just goes to show that the locals enjoy the pies so you never know, you might too.
For our group, the pies were good but didn't blow us away. Â The crust was flaky and the fillings sufficient, Â but there were a few things that didn't go over so well with us. The pie crust was on the sweet side. Sometimes that works but for the savory pies (we got a spinach and mushroom pie, two bacon and egg pies, and one apple pie) we would have preferred the crust to be non-sweet. Also for the bacon and eggs pie, the filling was gooier than we expected and the bits of bacon were tiny. I will say this--the pies we got came out fresh and hot which we appreciated. Â The three of us each had a pie and then split an apple one and were satisfied. Â The apple pie was our favorite. We also really enjoyed our frozen cappuccinos. Â There's one size and it looks like a medium. Perfect complement to a fried pie. Price is also good and one pie is filling. Pies are 3.99 ea. They carry a good variety of pies too.
The staff was okay. Â They weren't the friendliest and really only spoke if they had to. Honestly you don't have to even carry a full fledged conversation. A smile or two would be nice.
The  inside of the shop was outdated but it also doesn't look like anyone dines in so I suppose it doesn't matter tremendously...
After spending several hours at Turner Falls, my friend and I stopped here before heading back to OKC. It might've been because I was starving, but I thought the cherry pie tasted amazing! Initially, I was irritated because the pie was cold. I didn't have high hopes for how it would taste. I was wrong because it was quite good and I'm actually craving it right now.
This is not a place worth driving out of the way for. But if you're on I-35, it's worth a stop since it's literally right at exit 51. Apparently business is good because they have 24 other locations in different states.
Kind of disappointed. Â Stopped here for a fried pie after reading all the great reviews. Â Instead of giving me something fresh, it was cold and seemed to have been in the display cabinet all day. Â It wasn't bad, just not great. Â If it was warm and fresh, I'm sure it would have been good. Â They need heat lamps for their pies!
Review Source:Well, really I haven't had the "fried pie" experience elsewhere, so I kind of disagree with Yelps standard 2 Star rating of "Meh, I've experienced better".. But, Im giving them 2 Stars because nothing really stood OUT to me, like I had expected it to.
We got a little bit of everything.
I absolutely LOVED the Chicken & Vegetable one AKA pot pie! And the peach pie, well shit, I love peach anything, so it didnt make it out of the parking lot. BUT.. the rest were just pretty boring.
Canned pie filling, thin dough freshly pressed and fried, and that was about it. Boring.
Now, the fun part was my experience.
When you are kind of a "tourist attraction" the expectation from us Texas Folk is that you will wear that Southern Hospitality with PRIDE! Apparently they are just a stop on the way, and didnt get that memo.
It was my very 1st time getting THE "Fried Pie", so I went it super excited to try it out. I liked the total mundane-ss of the place. All simple, red and white. Cool. But I had NO idea what kind of filling would be in a non-fruit pie, so naturally I asked. Apparently the older lady with the pink armed glasses was just amazed that Id ask, because she could NOT tell me what the filling was. I had to elaborate what I was asking, and even then, she couldnt tell me. I asked specifically what was in the middle of the chicken & veggie, or the beef & veggie pies. I asked if it was cream, or if was gravy, or WHAT was it? Cheese.. Something besides are, I would have assumed. Even with that, she talked to me like some dumbass, so she got it right back.
Talked shit about some other co-worker to an elderly man sitting waiting for his pies. Ther 3 teenage girls it took to make pies used their hands, fine, but also swung towels around and answered both their phones AND the work phone, and went right back to pressing out dough, and touching them all. Im not super freaky about ish like that, but that + the rude lady at the counter, just really turned me off.
Will I go back? No. Will I be in the area, yes! Will I try their competetors, sure thing!
6-26-13: Â I had read earlier reviews so was excited to stop for gas and a few of the fruit pies. Â I bought 3 peach and 3 cherry. Â The pie crust was mushy and fell apart (impossible to eat while driving) but the worst part was the taste. Â Maybe they are trying to save money by not changing the peanut oil but the result is a rancid flavor. Â Yuk!
Review Source:I enjoy Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies and it makes for an excellent stop on the drive to or from Dallas.
First, I'm a sucker for the dinosaur on top of the gas pumps. If you think about it, it's really no different than having a cow atop a steakhouse. It's slightly morbid, but mostly fun.
The pies are also delicious. They are made fresh, so they are soft and warm when you receive them. You can see the production line to the left of the display case when you order. If you want, you can get a combination of two flavors made to order, it will take a little longer but it's a nice option.
I like the apricot, pecan, and the blackberry in particular. The savory pies are not my favorite and they can take a while to cool off, which is a good feature, but not necessarily what I'm looking for in a quick highway stop.
The bathrooms are kept clean and the staff has always been friendly to me. I don't stop on every trip, but I never regret it when I do.
For ~8 years I've driven down to Dallas in November for a convention. Â And for seven of those years I have driven past the signs on I-35 advertising the Fried Pies that are available at the exit. Â Now I know that this was seven years of repeating the same mistake.
Now, when I think of fried pies, the first thing that comes to mind is the Hostess Fruit Pie -- a dinky little hand-sized pie full of a gelatinous fruit filling or pudding with a flaky sweetened glaze on the outside. Â Its a thing to eat, but nothing that one would look forward to. Â These fried pies at this shop are a world away from those Hostess pucks.
The first thing you notice when you pull up to the Original Fried Pies shop is that it's a little gas station that looks like it's seen better days -- the folks on the interstate whiz past but the gas station doesn't have a lot of visibility from the highway that would draw in traffic (like I said, drove past it for years, only enticed in by the small roadside signs). Â When you step into the shop, there is a heavy smell of atomized oil in the air -- remember, these pies are fried, and this means glorious deep-fat fryers. Â The selection of flavors is substantial -- several fruit and nut pies, cream pies, and meat "pot pies". Â In this location you can see into the kitchen and watch them fill the pie shells and use the over-sized dumping press to make a pie the length of a football ... a delicious fried football pie.
Though the flavors are apparently available in sugar-free, I cannot fathom getting one of these without sugar. Â The pie is an absolute sugar and grease bomb. Â I don't know if there is anything that is better than something hot out of a fryer, but there is something magically delicious about hot fresh fried dough. Â I chose blackberry, and it was _fan_f#@king_tastic. Â I devoured that beast in ~2 minutes, and after that I was floating on air. Â My traveling companions got a peach and a pecan -- also absolutely great. Â I think the greatest testament to the deliciousness of these pies is that, after my wife could not finish hers (the pecan) and set it atop the trash, my buddy R. returned from the restroom and looked at the remains of the pie in the wrapper and said "I'm not going to lie, I'm really tempted to pick that up and eat it" -- pies so good you would consider fishing the remains of one out of the trash to eat it. Â I know it's a cliche to say that something is like "crack", so I'll let you fill in some other overwrought metaphor for something that is incredibly great that you would do things well-outside of your character to obtain. Â These pies are that thing.
If I can find any other excuse to run by this place any time before my annual trip to Dallas, I am totally going there, or I'm going to seek out one of the other locations in Missouri or Arkansas.
Stopped in on a whim during a road trip. We loved the pies! My husband ordered a bacon egg and cheese for the whole family to share. He also had peach, which was yummy. My son (5) and I tried cherry which we both liked. The fruit pies were basically canned pie filling but they were good regardless. My 9 year old daughter had chocolate cream. She liked it but said she liked the bacon, egg, and cheese better. Don't plan on eating these in the car--the pastry is thin and can fall apart easily. Â Overall a good treat and worth a stop!
Review Source:Stopped by on Friday, Sept. 21st, to pick up pies for my parents. They love them. I'm in advertising...for restaurants, so I typically take reviews with a "grain of salt" because I understand the business; and rarely post a review. Â
However, my experience on Friday warrants a quick note. Walking into the Arbuckle Fried Pie store was 5 minutes of my life that I will never get back. Â The woman that waited on me clearly is not happy with her life choices. Or, she thought she knew me from another life and hated me. That's how I felt. Rude and Angry are the two words that come to mind.
I made the mistake of asking a question and when she responded with " THAT flavor is MADE to order", I shut down. WHY I forked over $18 for six FRIED pies is still something I wonder.
So, if your traveling I-35 near Davis, Ok, and see the big red sign, FRIED PIES, keep in mind that Ardmore has a store and so does OKC (at 50th and Portland.) Both have employees that won't scare you or quite frankly, piss you off.
Save your money. Service truly is important and YOU deserve it.
AMAZING!! Â Stumbled on to this place traveling to a family reunion. Â We bought a dozen! Â Pecan, blackberry, apple, vanilla, coconut, peach, apricot, cherry, chocolate!!!!! Â wow!! Â You can freeze them and heat them up in the oven when you are ready to eat them. Â We should have bought more!! Â Stop if you are traveling through! Â You will not be disappointed!
Review Source:We have made frequent road trips from Texas to Oklahoma and always see the billboards advertising fried pies. Out of curiosity, we decided to stop and give it a try. Â These pies are nothing fancy, just a crescent shaped pie filled with the filling of your choice. Despite their simplicity, these pies are freaking awesome! I tried the coconut, pecan, peach and Tex Mex pies. My favorite is the pecan pie. I'm salivating just thinking about it! It was sooo good and far exceeded what I was expecting. The Tex Mex was filled with meat/beans and it was my next favorite. The crust on these pies is soft and savory. The pies were fresh and piping hot.
They were making the pies up front and I thought that was cool.
If you have never tried this place, you HAVE to. You will not be disappointed.
This place used to make great fried pies, back around 1996. Â The current owner bought the operation and cut every corner imaginable, yet for some reason, people still flock to this place to buy their pies. Â The filling is straight out of a Sysco can (you can see the cans in the back), and the dough is doughy. Â As in, just try to pick one of these things up in one hand--it will flop over and break in half. Or maybe I shouldn't say "break", since the dough is not crisp enough to actually crack--it will in fact tear in half, or simply fall apart.
If you want to stand in line to buy a very mediocre collapsing fried pie, you've found your place!
On our way north to Oklahoma City on Interstate 35 as we neared Turner Falls, we'd noticed a sign advertising "Fried Pies". Â We didn't have the time to stop, but on our way back home to Plano, TX we would. Â We did and are we ever glad! Â What a great place! Â It's on the west side of the Interstate right at the entry to Turner Falls, Oklahoma. Â You can't miss the "red brontosaurus" on the flat roof that protects the two lone gas pumps in front of the spacious fried pie place. The generous sized hand held fried pie's are to the right as you walk in. Â They are fresh ready for you to order and eat. Â All the fillings are fresh made and folded in "Nancy's" famous fried pie crust. Â To the left is the dining area that looks like it could house a "church" with its tall ceiling and "Cross" on the wall. Â The restrooms are to the left of the dining room. Â The fruit hand held fried pies are: apricot, apple, peach, cherry, pineapple, and blackberry. Â The sugar-free ones are: apricot, apple, peach, cherry, pineapple, and blackberry. Â The cream ones are: coconut, chocolate, lemon and vanilla. Â They have a pecan fried pie. Â All the pies are fresh made right there behind the counter staffed by friendly ladies. Â You can purchase frozen ones, too that are a bit cheaper. Â They also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Â They're open from 7AM to 7PM, seven days a week. Â If you've never been to Turner Falls, this was our first time ever, and you've got a few more minutes to spare, take the road into the park as it'll eventually wind around back out on to the Interstate. Â You'll be glad you did! Â It is gorgeous! Â The views from the Arbuckle Mountains are breathtaking.
Review Source:Stumbled on this place on trip from Texas to Ohio. Â Wow, what a find. Â These pies are outrageously good. Â Even the "sugar free" flavors were spectacular. Â The blackbery was one of the best fruit pies I have ever had, fried or not. Â We have returned just to get some pies for the freezer. Â Of course the pies are best when eaten fresh but frozen and warmed in the oven is still pretty tasty and that will have to do since I haven't found any fried pies this tasty in the DFW area. Â
One drawback is the a function of the popularity of the pies. Â Summer weekends can be a bit crowded and parking can be difficult. Â Service is normally speedy but does get slow when the place is packed which can be often in the summer.
not the old fashion fried pies, you can some times find in a out of the with country store, and they are sure not the fried pie's my mom use to make!
yes they are oversized, over sweetend, and over priced, standard can pie filling's,but who cares as long as it's big and greasy!
don't let the sign fool you and I wouldn't waist my time again...
big no,I want be back!
Excellent fried pies. Of the large variety. When I picked mine up this afternoon, all were warm. The chocolate pudding had great chocolate flavor, and the peach filling was like a burst of summer. The apple seemed like standard canned apple pie filling -- but WHO CARES, because this was a FRICKIN' FRIED FRICKIN' PIE, which I totally cannot get where I live. Really, these are some of the best ever -- a wide variety of fillings and a glorious crust that is tender, flaky and not-at-all greasy. Â I wish I could have tried more -- they had several cream pies (vanilla, coconut and lemon, at least, as well as the great chocolate I had), cherry, blackberry, pineapple, and some other fruit pies.
Review Source:LORD HAVE MERCY! Â Â WOW......so we are on this family road trip and are going from Texas to Iowa.....we cross over from TX to OK and see the Fried Pie's sign and I am SUDDENLY instantly reminded (and can't believe I forgot about them) of fried pie's. Â Â
They are AMAZING! Â We each had a different kind, me = Lemon, the Mr. = Apricot, the girl = vanilla and the boy = chocolate. Â WHOA.
You can even get them frozen and by the dozen. Â Â So delicious.
TREADMILL HERE I COME, but sooooo worth it.
This fried pie bakery offers a spectrum of fillings and special options. They have an outstanding variety of fruit pie fillings, but they also offer breakfast fillings, dinner fillings and sugar-free fruit fillings. I often travel through the Arbuckles, and this bakery has become a standard pit-stop. The staff is extremely friendly, welcoming and you can see they whole baking operation running just behind the counter. The pies are not the pre-packaged, dried-out, crusty, mini glazed Hostess pies you might have bought from the corner store; these pie are about half the size of your face (yes, YOUR face!), they are flaky, pastry-like, sweet, savory and worth twice the price charged. (Pies weigh about 8oz and cost $2.50 to $2.75.) Make sure you stock-up!
