This is some of the best BBQ in Georgia. Â They make a unique, addictive sauce that has peppercorns in it. Â The pork is chopped instead of pulled. Â It's in a great mid-20th-century building that hasn't been changed much. Â I can't wait to go back and try their homemade pies! Â Cash only.
Review Source:Armstrong's BBQ, at 65 years old, is probably secondly only to Fincher's in Macon for longevity as a barbecue joint here in Georgia...
Unlike Fincher's, Armstrong's seems to have lost some of its edge - at least on our recent visit.
The pork plate (with two sides) is reasonably priced at $5.99 but the pork, a combination of thinly sliced and chopped was dry and with only minimal flavor.
And don't expect ribs except on Saturdays. "He doesn't have time to cook them during the week," explained our waitress (more on her later).
On the plus side, their thinly chopped slaw and their sauce (unique blend of pepper, vinegar and tomato) are both good. Armstrong's Brunswick Stew was excellent and their just-out-of-the oven chocolate pie was exceptional.
Our waitress, Debbie, was a hoot (southern term) - orange t-shirt and baseball cap, and likely there most of Armstrong's 65 years. She greets everyone as "hon," operating at high speed, making sure glasses are always filled and inquiring if she can get anything else...
Caution, they don't accept checks or credit cards.
The Brown Shoe Gourmet
If you are traveling Hwy 27 S through Summervile, GA then Armstrong's BBQ is truly worth a visit. Â They have some of the BEST smoked BBQ pork sandwiches we have ever tasted. Â We are very picky about our Brunswick stew, and Armstrong's delivers with flavor! Â They have been in business since 1965. Â We savored our first visit and will definitely eat there again. Â They do not take credit card. Be ready to pay with cash or check. Â Mmmmm
