Go to any local Austin restaurant (Trudy's, Matt's Famous El Rancho, Threadgills, etc), order a Mexican martini, and you will get a full glass PLUS a shaker with 2-3 more drink's worth. Not so at Back Spin, where you only get 8 oz at most. Even worse, the drink is average at best. So not only do you get 1/3 of the volume, but 1/2 the quality -- at the exact same price as any other restaurant.
And if you want fries with your burger? That's an "upgrade" -- for an additional cost, of course. My girlfriend and I went tonight to watch the Heat-Spurs.
But the drunk woman yelling "Fuck you, LeBron" and "Fuck you, Heat" at the top of her lungs over and over again (easily 50 times) without being asked to stop caused us to decide to leave early.
When we presented the waitress with a coupon FROM BACK SPIN'S WEBSITE, the manager came back and made my girlfriend feel stupid, claiming "We don't have a coupon like this." IT'S ON THEIR WEBSITE. A site I don't need to look at any more, which is sad because it is only a mile from our house, local, and a sports bar. What a huge disappointment tonight.
I have been to backspin many times for lunch.  For a pub/bar they have great food.  In my opinion its probably the best pub food you can find.  I would go as far as saying  maybe the best food South of 290.  They have some the best soups I have had in Austin and better then I can make and I am a very good cook.
The wait staff is very friendly each time I have been there. Â Bobbie seems to recognize me when I go in and she is very attentive and very nice.
My wife and I went on Friday night . Â We are looking for a new Friday night place to hang out. Â The Friday night crowd seems pretty young. Â I am 45 and felt like the old guy in the room. Â There was one guy in there that was apparently a life long bar fly that was older than I and there was one another couple that I would be bet was over 45. Â The rest are around 25-40. Â We left at 7pm and I can imagine that place getting very crowded and loud.
Every time I go in there is a group of people at the corner of the bar. Â I think this place a very loyal click of customers. Â I can see how some people would have an awkward feeling or a vibe in there. Â
I will continue to go there for lunches during the week but this probably wont be our hangout spot on Friday nights. Â Yelp me if you know of a good hangout in South Austin for Friday nights for good food and drink. Â Bar or Restaurant Bar is fine.
I have been here a few times and each time the experience has been just fine. Drinks are fine, service is fine, atmosphere is fine... a nominal evening of drinking can be had here. The best part about Backspin for me is the NTN trivia which has been hard to find lately. I think that they've got the potential of a really good thing going at Backspin, but the feeling I get is that it's all been phoned in. They're so close to having an awesome neighborhood bar, it's just teetering on the edge between that and just some place to grab a drink.
