Um, yeah.... Saw this place listed in Austin Monthly for their great eggs benedict so we thought we'd check it out. Ick. The blueberry muffin that came with the dish tasted off. It had a chemical taste or something. The potatoes were also bland and odd-tasting. The eggs benedict were passable, but not very good. I ate enough to take the edge off my hunger but left most of my meal on the plate. I love finding hidden neighborhood gems and was hoping the Bakehouse would be a great new discovery, but I was sadly disappointed. I will not be going back.
Review Source:Not good at all. Â I really wanted to like this place as it's not too far away from where I work. Â As soon as I walked in, I felt like I stepped back in time to the 1980s or on to the set of that Chef Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares TV show. Â Either way, the server was nice, but the food was awful. Â I ordered the Eggs Benedict--and it was by far one of the worst Benedicts that I've ever had. Â The canadian bacon on it reminded me of mystery meat from when I was a wee young one at elementary school. Â It was just awful. Â On the plus side, the prices aren't bad.
Review Source:I hadn't been to Bakehouse in over 20 years since my early college years (circa-1986)...I'm now back living in Austin and stopped during SXSW with some NYC peers...SO glad the place is still genuine with great food and fun service! AWESOME BEST zesty bloody marys!! Keep up the great work Bakehouse! I'll be back!
Review Source:Thank you for your response. Â The fact that your servers are unaware of a problem only underscores the problem in your restaurant. Â The servers were unaware because they were no where to be seen near our booth or in the dining where we were seated for at least 10+ minutes. Â And your response, which takes the servers side and not the side of the customer, is also very telling. Â I think we've found the problem.
Review Source:I went there for lunch on a weekday and was disappointed in my food. I ordered the Petitle Quiche which comes with a side salad. The bottom of my salad was full of water. The slice of quiche was tiny, overcooked and mostly too hard to eat. Also, it was supposed to have mushrooms in it (according to the waitress) but apparently they were out of mushrooms because it was chock-full of black olives, which I do not like. By the time i picked out the olives and found a few areas of egg that were not too tough, I got about four or five bites out of it. Don't think I'll be going back.
Review Source:.
Everyone deserves to have that neighborhood cafe they can go to for a quiet breakfast, lunch, or dinner. A place with basic fare, but maybe a few little extras thrown in, with a "sorta gourmet" flair. For my neighborhood, that place would be The Bakehouse.
Situated next to a Laundromat on Manchaca Rd, just north of Stassney, The Bakehouse is both "down home" and sorta "uptown" at the same time. Here's what I mean:
Want a nice basic breakfast, for example? Just get a coupla eggs and bacon, or b'fast meat of your choice. Want something a little nicer? Go for an expertly-prepared Omlette, with some fresh fruit and bran muffins on the side. The muffins are house-made, diminutive and just a little sweet. I could sit there and eat nothing but those muffins all day long.
Hey, we're in Texas, after all; why not have Huevos Rancheros, or maybe some Migas?
Pancakes are light, fluffy, and fantastic. Lotsa flavors, all prepared with whole wheat flour and fresh Buttermilk.
Want something more upscale? Try the Eggs Benedict, or BH's own take on the dish, Bakehouse Eggs, with sausage patty instead of the traditional Canadian Bacon. Or maybe crab? Hollandaise is made from scratch. Luxurious breakfast that goes for a LOT more $$ elsewhere.
Lunch or dinner, you can get a terrific burger (I'm told) of your own design (or theirs).
I've never gotten around to the burgers, cuz long ago, I found a favorite I just can't seem to stray from. Well, not very often, at least:
First, ya start off with an order of the Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms in Garlic Butter; sop up the stray butter with some of THAT BREAD! Then, it's on to the star of the show, the South Austin Wellington. I've described this to people and watch them roll their eyes and snicker, but trust me, it's REALLY good. A lean ground beef patty cooked just right, coated with pate and mushrooms (like you're supposed to), encased in a light, fluffy "boot" of Puff Pastry (why DID ya think they call it "Wellington"?). Of course, smothered in a Burgundy sauce.
OK, it's not Tenderloin or Filet Mignon, but it's $8.99! As was once said on Letterman: "Whaddaya want, WICKER?"
I have absolutely no idea what that means.
There are what they call "World" dishes, dabbling in several different ethnicities and cuisines. Too many offerings to cover here.
But one thing deserves mention, you can thank me for this later (hehe):
Next Valentine's Day, make a reservation IN ADVANCE (you'll HAVE to), and take your "significant other" to The Bakehouse for the "Chateaubriand for Two". I suggest you DON'T make any other plans for the rest of the evening, except with the person in front (or beside) you. Works for ME... Â ;)
There's a REASON it's called the BAKEhouse; check out the sweet delectibles in the case (up front) on your way out. Take something home; you're gonna get "that" craving later, if ya don't already have it. Â
Sorry, I don't have any pictures of my own to post right now.
But there are NO photos of my "faves", so THAT is a good enough reason to go again very soon. Like I NEED a reason?
So, go check out The Bakehouse and try "The Boot" (er, I mean Wellington), if something else doesn't lure you in first.
Oh, and if you're behind on your "warsh" ("Karl Childers", Sling Blade), bring it along; IT can play in the "laundry daycare" right across the parking lot while you feast. You could even have the French Fried "Pataters"; but don't forget the MUSTARD.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

I grew up mere blocks away from the Bakehouse, so it's tough to be objective about this place - it's been firmly embedded in my consciousness as my mental yardstick for a neighborhood restaurant.
One of their chief virtues is that their menu is gigantic and includes all sorts of weird stuff from around the world: crab-stuffed cod alongside Moroccan couscous alongside bratwurst alongside Thai curry alongside shrimp alongside enchiladas alongside beef Wellington alongside typical American breakfast/lunch/dinner stuff. You can take several of the world's pickiest eaters there (e.g. me and my siblings when we were children) and they are guaranteed to find something to eat.
Furthermore, all of this stuff is actually pretty good. No, their curry isn't quite equal to a real Thai restaurant's, and plenty of the more off-beat ethnic stuff is done better at some specialty food trailer somewhere, but I've never had a bad experience with a meal here, and the luxury of having such a vast range of options means that no matter what you walk in feeling like you're craving, you can close your eyes, point at some spot on your menu, and not be disappointed with the results.
Plus they are extremely reasonably-priced, especially for their breakfast, which is what I often get since they serve it until 3pm. Migas is like $5. Gigantic omelets are $7 or $8, with multiple sides. Dinner the other night with my brother and my parents barely cracked $50 with 4 entrées and 2 desserts. A normal burger is $6, but you can get an entire 3 pound burger for $19, and if you can eat it in less time than the previous person to order it they'll even name it after you (current record: just under 10 minutes). I personally wouldn't choose their bar to spend a Friday night at, but they do have a decent range of beers and liquors at almost-normal bar prices.
I won't give them 5 stars, since even a die-hard fan would agree that nothing on their menu is the best in its class. But this is the kind of place that's remained consistently good for essentially my entire lifetime, and I'll keep coming back to sit on their patio and watch the passing cars on Manchaca as long as they're open.
O.K. Went a couple of weeks ago to try the eggs b again. It was decent but once again the eggs were overcooked. They obviously did not recognize me from last review because our food was taking forever. Our waitress went to check on it and came back out and said they forgot to make my dining partners food so they were going to have to start from scratch. No big deal or was it?
Our food came out and I noticed my food was not remade. It was put under a heat lamp. How did I know this...because the fresh orange and grapes on the plate were dried out and warm, and the eggs b were cooked hard medium.
That being said...I enjoyed it and the server was nice...I just don't like being lied to.
I drive past this place twice a day (on my way to and from work) and there are always a lot of cars there. My husband and I decided to try something new and stopped in after looking at the menu.
He ordered some sort of chicken and I, the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and side salads. The lettuce was a nice, orangey color (think rust color). I opted to eat the croutons only. Our meals came. He took one bite of his and lost his appetite. I tried mine and while the CFS steak was ok, the taters were not.
In addition to the food being mediocre at best, the table to my right was the loudest, most obnoxious EVER. There is nothing cute about a girl who constantly refers to a male private part by every word in the book and to where we could hear their entire conversation.
Needless to say, we won't be back.
Delicious Chicken Pot Pie!!!
Haven't tried too much else there and have only been less than a handful of times late at night. The service is hit or miss (depends on the waitress.. had one great one and one crappy one). Had a burger there too, and it was good :)
Not many good late night places to eat in Austin, especially south, so we were happy to discover this place (after passing by it for years). It's hard to gauge what it's like from the outside, but worth trying!
Um the BEST pancakes ever!! Â I know Austin has a few other locations that claim best pancake. Â However I must disagree, I think the cakes at the Bakehouse are the best in the area. Â I've been here a few times and the staff is really friendly and courteous. Â Food is great and delicious. Â It sits off the roadway just a bit and is nestled in-between a couple of other businesses so you may pass it if you don't pay attention.
They have something for everyone on their menu. Â Definitely a must on your Austin bucket list.
I waited a day before writing this because i want to take the emotion out of my review.
We went here because we wanted to find a nice place to eat breakfast late that was not a major chain and did not require going north of Ben white. but after out experience with the wait staff, management, and how the food was cooked i can say that i will not be patronizing the bakehouse again. we were seated pretty quickly which was nice and, the time from being seated to ordering was more than acceptable (It was not dead but not slammed to give an idea of the day.) we both ordered the "Carlos favorite omelet" and both ordered soft drinks. the waitress did come by and make sure we had drinks at least twice which was nice. so far so good. the first issues was the time from order to the time the food was served. it was approx. 45 minutes for out food to come out. i thought that was 15 minutes too long for breakfast. the plate looked like standard diner fare which was expected and nice. the re fried beans were standard and so were the home fries not great but not bad. the issue with me was the main course the omelet that comes like a burrito. i took several bites and something didn't seam right. so i took a couple of more bites thinking its just me. but the closer i got to the center the worse it got. i spread the rest out and noticed that the eggs in the omelet were semi burnt, and my wife's were dark brown. the waitress came by and i mentioned that i was upset that the eggs were burnt. the waitress answered back with a condescending tone "what do you want me to do?" at this point i began to get frustrated. and she said she would bring it back to the cook. she came back 2 minutes later and told us that this is the way the dish is supposed to be and nothing was wrong with the plate. by now i am annoyed because i know that a restaurant would not serve food like this and we are being told "too bad". after this they offered a free desert to pacify me and my wife. we demanded to speak to manager which we never saw and after we asked to for the owner or a phone number and/or address to a owner we were told to go outside to get the number and address of the establishment. the waitress at this point acted like an unprofessional and taunted me and my wife with our child. If the owner of this establishment reads this and there is was to contact you please respond to this. the overcooked food and the lack of service was bad but provoking customers is unprofessional unethical and just down right sad.
We always get a good meal at this neighborhood restaurant. Last night we split an order of the pork chops, which are flavorful and juicy. They make good salads and all the sides are good too. You get 3 with a dinner. We had a salad, bake potato and vegetable medley. We don't always split a dinner, but the portions on some meals make it feasible. The German food is good too. Wiener schnitzel, sour krout, etc. I rarely get dessert, but they sure look good. I like the breakfast sandwich too. Nice roll with egg, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and sprouts. And the coffee is just right. Definitely try the Backhouse.
Review Source:I've been driving past this place for years. Nothing about it ever appealed to me for some reason and I've always just kept on trucking. I think a big part of that was I couldn't judge what kind of food I would get, what the inside must look like, anything really, from the look of the building. And I never got the metal globe on the roof. Merp. But then throughout the holidays I kept noticing their marquee that read "Happy Hollandaise!" and a.) thought that was goshdarn clever and b.) was now assured that they can whip up an eggs benedict dish - something I crave and hunt down and prey on like a ravenous human who likes eggs benedict.
Today whilst playing the "Whadaya wanna eat?" "I dunno, whada yoooou wanna eat?" "I don't care... whatever yoooou wanna eat..." game, Bakehouse popped into my head, saving lives and ending that potentially endless loop of indecision.
My overall takeaway is that this place is like Grandma is cooking for you and let Grandpa do the decorating.
They've got an expansive menu, and an entire menu dedicated to breakfast / brunch items - everybody loves this. Getting to order breakfast any time of the day is a treat.
But I was in the mood for more filling fare, I went with the Beef Wellington. That was the 3d star, the saving grace of this visit. We'll come back to that shortly.
We got the guac appetizer. Guac is tricky. It  needs to be made with perfectly ripe avacados, made fresh and have a decent amount of citrus in it to keep it from browning. Ours had good flavor but was already browning. I, like anyone else, eat frist with my eyes, so regardless of the good flavor, had trouble eating it since it wasn't as fresh as I'd have liked.
Their bread is amazing, to die for, perfect, wonderful... and all that good stuff. I'd order loaves of it to go... I should do that. Okay, I'm gonna do that.
Mini-Me had chicken strips (SHOCKERING) and I now realize how badly I need to vary her restaurant diet. Sheesh. She's noshing on the leftovers now and seems pretty happy.
The gentleman had the breakfast plate  - fried eggs, toast, side of tatoes. Cleaned the plate.
Okay, my Beef Wellington was really really good. The flavor was great, it was filling, a perfect little portion. The breading was cooked perfectly (I always worry about it being doughy or mushy) The sauce and mushrooms were flavorful. It was just a great dish. The baked tater I got on the side is calling my name now, I was too full to touch it at the restaurant.
Service was nice. The missing two stars are due to cleanliness. I'd like it if the floors were cleaner and the seats were wiped down (they do wipe the tables) when a party leaves. But in the casual, diner atmosphere, I wasn't put out by any thing and really did enjoy myself. My server was very sweet and did a good job.
I'm not going to talk about the dinner salad because I'm just not. This is not the place to order salads, I'll leave it at that.
They have some hearty dishes on the menu that I want to try and the French toast that walked past me blew me a kiss and gave me its phone number, so I'll be calling on it next time. Sexy French toast. I'll be back for breakfast and brunch food... and probably to check out the quaint little bar at some point.
I like globes.
I like lights too. I love bright lights and dim lights, so anything with lighting out of the ordinary automatically appeals to me.
You know what else likes lights? Bugs.
So that's why I was afraid to eat here and avoided it for so long. I read a lot of reviews that said this place has lots of fruit flies everywhere, and I really don't want to eat a bug (though the average person consumes 6 spiders throughout his or her life while sleeping? or maybe the boys in middle school just told me that to make me forever scared). However, I only saw one fruit fly. I swatted it away and it didn't come back.
I loved the globes, the maps, and how dim this place was. Our server wasn't mean, but she definitely wasn't friendly, although there were only about three tables in her section. This place doesn't have the feel of needing an ass-kissing waitress though. It felt very homey.
The food was okay. We started with crab stuffed mushrooms, which could have been good but that crab tasted off... it definitely must have been imitation crab and it tasted like food shouldn't taste. I scraped off the crab to eat them, since I still love mushrooms. I had a chicken fried steak, salad, and mashed potatoes. I LOVE mashed potatoes, probably way more than a person should, and they were great. However, when my plate arrived, the gravy had already congealed. I know that happens, but that makes me wonder how long it was sitting there before it was taken to my table? It was served lukewarm.. maybe it was left under a heat lamp, maybe the food isn't that fresh. My meal was much more enjoyable than my boyfriend's. He got the beef stroganoff, and I sampled it too. It had a nice wine flavor to it, but no sour cream, which I feel is kind of important to stroganoff. He said he enjoyed it, but that the beef stroganoff I slaved over once was much better (whooooo! I win universe!).
Surprisingly I didn't get a drink. I would have opted for a beer but I knew we were ordering really rich food. This place could be four stars if their drinks are good. Additionally, since this place is so close, my roommates have tried the burgers and sweet potato fries and have enjoyed them. I'll definitely give this place another chance, but it isn't a restaurant I would make a special trip for.
Eh.
I've come here a few times and ordered different things each time - they have a huge selection on their menu. Â The food is decent - you get what you pay for, which is good if you not looking to spend a lot but sucks when you order the pancakes and you get some soggy wheatcakes they call "pancakes". Â Another con, the atmosphere is pretty dreary. Â I've never been here when there are more than 4 tables in the entire restaurant and the decour is pretty dismal, which is probably why they keep the lights so low inside.
I probably won't go again as there is so much selection in Austin. Â But I'd recommend this place to others if you're poor and don't care too much about the quality of your food. Â So this place is perfect if you're a college student.
Um Yes Please and more!
Several people have told me to check out Bakehouse and it's always lied in there on Manchaca within walking distance from my home. I work all the time, so sometimes a late dinner is all I can have. This place closes at midnight! Score! Plus this was also my husband's first time here.
It's a great place for a date night, there is a variety of things to choose from. My husband had chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and rice. They accidently gave him veggies, but that was actually okay. My husband, who's not a veggie lover, actually liked the squash, carrot, cabbage, broccoli medley. Maybe I can finally get him to eat them at home? :P I had the South Austin Wellington, rice and veggies. I actually never had a Wellington and I was actually pleasantly pleased! Very well cooked, juicy and yummy! Bread was good and the service was excellent, we never waited long for refills, food and check. We also bought a Strawberry Shortcake home to our babysitter and she told us that it was the best shortcake she's ever had!
They have a good range of German beer, whom I've been told by my German friends, beers that are hard to get (and hard to pronounce!) LOL
So we also loved the scenery in the booth area and it was cute and intimate, we spent the latter of our time (electronicless) reading the maps and talking about the globe that was over us. We had a really good time and  we're definitely coming back to try out more meals!
New cook or off day? I would normally give this place at least 3 stars but today was very disappointing. I've been going here for the last several years and I've always enjoyed my breakfast until today. Our waitress who I'd never seen before was not particularly friendly. Also, she didn't come to check on us after we got our food. I always order the same thing: mushroom omelette with potatoes and refried beans. The potatoes weren't cooked all of the way. The beans were very runny and my omelette did not taste the same. Either the mushrooms weren't sauteed in burgundy or they weren't sauteed as much as usual. The cheese didn't taste as rich, possibly because the mushrooms were not sauteed and there was not as much cheese and mushrooms as usual. I probably won't go back for a while.
Review Source:Let's do the time warp again.
There was a time in American cuisine when locally-invented "foreign" food was really chic. Stuff like Chow Mein, that'd just get you blank looks if you tried to find it in Asia.
This place is like a museum to that era. Â The menu's entertaining all by itself. (Really? They do _that_ with shrimp?)
Combined with a soundtrack made up of every bad 70s light-rock song you wish you'd forgotten, it must be a big hit with the ironic hipster crowd. Â Even if I don't go much, I'm glad to see unique places doing well in the neighborhood. Â And you just don't hear that much saxophone in recent hits.
That said, the burger and sweet potato fries  with "The Pina Colada Song" were fantastic.  Lunch service was pleasant and good.  Was happy to get out of there just as they began to play "Mandy."
Very disappointed.
I prefer Magnolias for Sunday morning breakfast, but the Bakehouse isnt as popular,so the wait time to be seated is minimal.
I arrived at 11:45 and was promptly seated, but around 12:15 I decided to leave seeing as no one asked what I wanted to drink nor eat.
I did notice three men get seated ,and served ,after my friend and I had been seated for 10-15 minutes. I thought we would be next. But nope.
I can honestly say we sat waiting for 25 minutes with NO SERVICE.
I try to be understanding of waitstaff. But when I am hungry I tend to get ..well,grumpy.
Ordered the vegetarian curry.. Had bacon in it! Then found out the rice has chicken stock. Not vegetarian at all! More upset about the dishonesty than anything. Will never return and strongly advise any vegetarians to not step foot on this place.
My issue is an integrity thing. Mistakes happen, I get that. I look at it like if the kitchen staff is that careless when preparing a meal, how careless are they with everything else and I am certainly including sanitation!
** I am not going to have a review war here, but I am completely offended by the passive aggressiveness of the comment reply by the owner so I feel the need to respond:
1st, what I choose to put in my body is MY business. I did not once label to you, the server or on my review that I am Vegetarian or Vegan. I warned vegetarian/vegans.
2nd, there is a HUGE difference between chicken stock and a piece of actual flesh. It was not a tiny piece of bacon, it was the size of a quarter and it was in a "vegetarian" dish! There are numerous religious-based diets where chicken/chicken stock might be OK but Pork is not.
Would you tell somebody it was just a little piece of a peanut if they have a peanut allergy?? It does not matter the size or what it was, it should not have been in there. Your downplaying of it is not only insulting to me, but to any customer who has trust in what your kitchen is preparing. Would you say" it was just a little piece of glass???" I hope not.
If you re-read my review, I am warning vegetarians not to eat there. I have been and will again be stricter on what I eat and allow in my body and my ENTIRE reasoning for the review was based on an actual experience where nothing was fabricated and had I not asked, I would have not known about the chicken stock. Also, your server never gave any other option even after I asked her, she said "have the veggie sandwich with no mayo". Since you brought that up, maybe some education on your servers' part would be a good idea.
3rd, If you kitchen staff is completely careless enough to allow ANY meat, no matter the size, get into a "vegetarian" dish in a Vegetarian friendly city as Austin, how careless and thoughtless are they with other things such as sanitation?? This is a valid point.
4th, I had to argue with her because even after I told her my appetite was gone after chewing on the NOT TINY piece of meat, she still brought me the check and informed me that she was not the person who put the meat in the dish and she told me I could go find you if there was a problem, which is certainly not the professional way to handle things. You make it sound like you did me a favor by not charging me, YOUR kitchen messed up my food, I should not have to pay for it! I did not finish it, nor did I continue eating once I brought it to her attention.
5th, Had you simply owned up and quit trying to blame me for you deceiving people by your menu (for the record I came to your restaurant because of yelp, and your curry because most places that have vegetarian curry do have vegan options) and had you possibly contacted me privately, I would not have to respond  publicly.
After you response, I stick to my original review, I DO NOT FEEL THAT YOU OR YOUR RESTAURANT HAVE INTEGRITY. The way the situation and your comment has been handled proves and validates this!
At the end of the day, your kitchen is careless, your server was not that knowledgeable or that friendly for that matter (the only reason I tipped was because I work for tips and believe in tipping karma) and you obviously don't respect your customers enough to be honest about what you are preparing for them by claiming something is vegetarian when it's not (again, had I not asked I would have never known about the chicken stock).
This was my first meal in the neighborhood and had it been handled differently, you might have had a very loyal and regular customer as I had just moved in that day.
Hubby and I decided on Bakehouse today because the reviews were decent and I was craving  pancakes, club sandwich, hamburger and fries. Bakehouse is very laid back. We got to choose where we wanted to sit and they brought us both breakfast menu and the regular menu.
After ordering a Dr. Pepper, (they only carry Pepsi products, so no coke for you!) we looked over the huge menu and went with comfort foods! I got the mushroom and avocado burger. The hubby got chicken fried steak with mash potatoes and fries.
While we waited on our food, I took the time to observe my surroundings. The place was clean, well lite and the staff was very friendly and cheerful! The decor is alittle out dated but I am sure for people who have been coming here for years like it and it feels like home, which is fine with me.
We got this awesome little loaf of bread and butter before our meal came out! You can never go wrong with hot bread and butter!
Our meal came out in less than 10 minutes. The portions are very large! We started digging in. My burger was okay. All I could taste were the mushrooms. I cut the burger in half so I could handle the bites. The bottom bun was giving out already from all the weight of meat and cheese and mushrooms.
My husband was taking his time with the chicken fried steak. He said it tasted bland. I tasted it an agreed. He reach for the salt and after a few shakes on the whole plate, it started to taste better.
I gave up on my burger after eating only half of it. I started to help him finish his fried steak.
All around the place has character. We noticed how the staff was very attentive. It was a pleasant experience. If we do go back I think I'm gonna try something from the bar and get some pancakes!
desperate for something close to me, I checked out this place and the first thing I noticed upon entering is very dated interior. We dined in better lit dining area since we had kids with us. I'm glad we did that since we could actually see how dirty the place is. when you are sitting super close to dusty musty blinds (the pile of dust on the blinds..ohhh dear) you get pretty cranky over your husband trying to swat flies against the window panes. Yes, there were ALOT of flies due to what I have no idea.
I noticed that there were a lot of diners in the booths which are darkened and dimly lit. I thought that would be better because then you couldn't see the grime anywhere.
On the plus side, the server was good, attentive and gave good descrips of the food.
THe eggs benedict was good. Egg was poached pretty near perfect.
Bad: the coffee was like drinking darkened water. Seriously folks, at least get your coffee right!
my breakfast hash potatoes were BURNT
The french toast was well toasted. A little HARD and the macerated strawberries looked and tasted pretty bland. They looked like previously frozen strawberries that were thawed out and mixed with sugar.
The bathroom: I could barely stand waiting for it since it's a single stall room. The small hallway leading to it was so grimy looking that I felt like I could not lean on the wall. The bathroom was a bit better but not by much. This place needs a big rennovation or something.
Due to the cleanliness factor, I would not go back, which is too bad because the place has potential.
If you are starving do not come here. It is very laid back and the wait is well worth it the Beef Wellington was great with mushrooms and cheese in a lightly brown pastry mmm onion rings not there but onion strings are better the fries were really big and Delicious
As the Waitress was so sweet and pretty and friendly it is a lot of the neighbor hood people that go there and they are known for the German food, but you have to wait for what you getand it always good. the little loaf of bread was so good  I just love this place of course it is less than a mile to my house  ,I am so full oh did I mention that the tea they make is good with some mint and lemon.
on the other hand my Husband swears that  they make the best Chicken fried steak in Austin, it looks goood but I can;t eat everything .
One of our favorite, yet under appreciated by most, places for breakfast in S. Austin. Good standard american breakfast fair in a funky atmosphere that is perhaps as close to a diner as Austin gets.
We have gone there for dinner once or twice. They have a decent array of offering included some unexpected items like escargot - these were actually quite good and very affordable.
Breakfast is the best - recommend going for the pancakes or the classic eggs, homefries, toast options.
Atmosphere and Cleanliness : Its easy to see that this place has been around a while, very nice BUT a little messy..It did get swept up as we ate..
Service: Another trip with our grand daughter and it was a great on at that...waitress was quick to grab a high chair...Brandy did a great job..
Food: Wife had the chicken fried steak...was the second for her so far on this adventure, beating out Hills Café on flavor and size...fries were GOOD..I had the Bake house breast of chicken....chicken breast was moist  and packed full of flavor  and the rice was very good...this was new direction for me in food, and I liked it....Sophie had a side of mashed taters, that she gobbled down...Everything tasted fresh and home cooked..
Worth the Adventure: Oh Yea...with the menu variety, we look forward to try something new next time..
In my humble opinion, the Bake House is one of the most under rated, best kept secrets in the ATX! Â
Great food: Â I have tried the migas, chicken fried steak, the pancakes and the burgers, and all have been fantastic, with HUGE portions at small prices. Â All of the friends I have taken here (visitors and locals) have all had wonderfull dining experiences at the Bake House as well.
Great Selection: Â Have a bunch of friends in town for SXSW who are starving from a late last night? Â Don't want to take them to Mexican because friend X has heartburn? Â Don't want to go for burgers because friend Y is a vegetarian? Â Take them all to the Bake House where there's somthing for everyone. Â Their menu is deeper than the idie films your visitors checked out at SXSW.
Never overcrowded: Â Sunday brunch in Austin maybe the toughest time to get a table in Texas. Â Everywhere is a madhouse, and there's nothing worse than waiting 45 minutes to be seated when you're parched, hungry and grumpy. Â The Bake House is that secret hideaway where you can get seated immediately, get great, huge portions of food and drinks (did I mention their mimosas are the biggest, great tasting and are only $3?) for a great price. Â Also, parking is easily accessible and plentiful.
I love this place. Â No, the food isn't the best you're gonna find in town, but its pretty darn good. Â And combine that with everything else they have to offer, and this is a five-star spot. Â Shame on all the snobs who have given the Bake House poor reviews and can't see this for what it is....a local gem.
I'm always cautious when I peruse a menu and I see everything from cous cous to tuna steaks. Â That is my first clue to keep it simple. Â That is what I do here and I have had very good experiences every time I have been here. Â Â
I have been here probably ten times in my six years in Austin and I have had a pleasant experience each off those. Â The service is def S. Austin and a tad slow, the waitresses are cool and will chat, and the prices are right. Â I think I keep coming back because they serve food til midnight and have a great burger and an epic chef salad. Â Their french fries are stupendous and they serve a great horseradish sauce to dip them in. Â A half order is all you need. Â Trust.
The decor is quirky as all get out. Â There are globes and maps and weird paintings all over the place kinda giving the place a twilight zone feel. Â I'm okay with it. Â When I go there at 11 P.M. to get a burger, I'm halfway in the Twilight Zone already.
Stick to standard fare and you will be money.
Check out the bar. Â There are some guys in there that look like they have some good bullshit.
Q: Where do you go when you want breakfast, you need to kill a few hours while the car is at the shop, it's SXSW, and you want nothing to do with crowds and you're hungry and need coffee?
A: The Bakehouse, of course!!
Dad warned me it'd be dark inside, but we were able to sit in the front room, full of windows and left the dark paneling inside--believe me, I saw it when I went in to use the bathroom.
Service was great, for what it was. I'm sure our waitress had been there for years, and I'm sure all the tables she dealt with were her usuals. Â The food was fine. Nothing awesome, but it was satisfying and the coffee had caffeine--all good things.
Looks like a full bar, with only a few stools. Â I don't know if I'd risk it for dinner, but it could easily become that "I need breakfast--STAT!" type of place.
Bakehouse is like a combination of Kerby Lane and my Grandmother's old house. Not fancy or trendy, but had its own charm. When I stopped in here over the weekend for breakfast I went with the 2 eggs, fruit and wheat toast with a side of bacon.
Now, let's talk about this toast. Have you ever seen toast that is a good 3 inches thick? Wow. I thought the waitress had given me a stack of 4 slices of toast, but no, it was one piece about the size of my bed. Turns out it is Challah bread, but still much more toast than I expected.
The food wasn't particularly outstanding but definitely comforting. And did I mention cheap? You get a decent amount of food for the price you pay.
A pretty spot-on three star experience, Bakehouse combines an apparent love of globes (really) with an old-school diner-ish arrangement and caps the whole thing with a corner bar, some outside seating, and affordable comfort food. Being the late risers that we are and bearing in mind today's time change (note to self...pay attention to this next year), we ventured in for a late morning bite.
I tried on the blueberry pancakes, which were fluffy and wheat-filled and balanced that with a tall OJ and some of the dessert lover's bacon. Â Service was mostly reasonably prompt and chipper (but not overly so), and as is the case with most spots with diner appeal, I got the impression that this was a place brimming with regulars. Â Nothing unrivaled here, but a definitely affordable, menu-by-numbers breakfast is what we were looking for, and we definitely found that. Now I just need to stop back in for some cobbler at another time of day.
"Where do you want to go for breakfast?"
This age-old question in our house is a source of much frustration. In south Austin, there really aren't many viable options. You have your various family-owned Mexican spots like Arandas, and then you have your 24-hr meccas like Kerbey Lane and Magnolia Cafe. The problem with the Mexican joints is just that, it's Mexican food, and sometimes one's just in the mood for some pancakes or French toast. The complaints about Kerbey Lane or Magnolia Cafe always center around the ridiculous wait times on the weekends. Who the hell wants to loiter around the parking lot for two hours for a table? Trust me, I've lived in the 78704-45 areas for almost 5 years, and the weekend breakfast market is dismal.
Enter, Bakehouse. We can roll up to the Bakehouse at 11 AM on a Saturday morning and get a 6-top. You heard me. A 6-top. Do you have any idea how long it'd take for Kerbey Lane to pull their heads out of their asses and push two tables together to accommodate a 6-top? Approximately 7 HOURS, friend. Now, Bakehouse ain't the cleanest or prettiest place, but the food is decent. I always get the Eggs Florentine with the surprisingly tasty hollandaise sauce on the side, and a bloody mary-- make mine spicy. Service is spotty sometimes, but the people watching while you wait for your goodies can't be beat.
Give it a try on the weekend sometime, and see how much faster you get back to your house for your post-breakfast nap than ever before.
This place is strange: the ex and I would come here on a regular basis. I'd order something like the chicken chimichanga, and he'd get something totally opposite of it, like crab stuffed shrimp. Â Cos that's how the ex was: all oppositey of me (and difficult).
Then the next time, I'd get something like the rouladen, and he'd get a ham and cheese sandwich. Again, the discourse and non-conformity. It angered me.
The Bakehouse is a paradoxical, physical manifestation of that dysfunctional relationship. All conflict and no harmony. I'm surprised that it's been around for this long and continues to survive: that's a true testament to its patrons. I'm glad I can't say the same about that oppositey ex.
When I look for a good Chinese restaurant, I look for Chinese patrons. Â When I look for decent cheap meal, I look for q-tips, AKA old whiteheads, AKA AARP fanbase.
I mean have they ever wronged you? Â Old Country Buffet, Wafflehouse, IHOP?
So imagine my pleasant surprise to be one of the 5 people there under 45, including those in my party.
Bakehouse is a really great diner-type place. Dingy building, lamps fashioned out of geography globes (how provincial ;)), large portions of so-so food for really cheap prices (eggs pritchard: like eggs benedict but with crabcakes, and by crab, they mean artificial crab meat), lifer/second job waitstaff (our waitress had been around the block a few times, but was a total sweetheart), and truly living up to the term "brunch" by offering you anything from their lunch and breakfast menu on a Saturday morning.
So yes, it's kinda dirty  and overall the menu is probably not the tastiest.  But it's charming, local, and very wallet friendly.
